Finnish Goalie Jere Huhtamaa Commits To Merrimack College

The Hockey East Conference could be getting another star in the next few years. Finnish junior goalie Jere Huhtamaa has personally announced his commitment to Merrimack College. Although it is unclear when Huhtamaa plans on coming over to North America, Mike McMahon of The Mack Report speculates that it will not be until at least the 2020-21 season.

Although Huhtamaa, 18, went undrafted this year it was somewhat of a surprise. The Finnish netminder, who is described as being big, patient, and quick, was ranked 12th among European goalies by NHL Central Scouting and projected even higher by others. Yet, he was not one of the more than 25 keepers selected back in June. Interestingly, Huhtamaa’s numbers compare well to some of the highest drafted European goalies. Huhtamaa played in 32 games last season at the top junior level of the Finnish Liiga with the Espoo Blues program, posting a .907 save percentage and 2.35 GAA. He also played for five games with Finland’s U-18 team, including a shutout spot start at the U-18 World Junior Championships, and recorded a .914 save percentage. In comparison, highly-touted Colorado Avalanche third-round pick Justus Annunen played at the same levels as Huhtamaa and posted nearly identical numbers. Anunnen played 26 games for Karpat of the Junior-A Liiga with a .907 save percentage and 2.31 GAA and as the starter for Finland’s U-18 team, had a .914 save percentage at the World Juniors and an .889 mark overall. Maybe even more impressive is how Huhtamaa compares to Olof Lindbom, the first goalie selected in the draft. At the same top junior level in Sweden, Lindbom – who also has a similar size and style to Huhtamaa – managed only an .897 save percentage and 3.10 GAA in 20 games, although he was phenomenal at the U-18 World Juniors.

All things considered, Merrimack may have found a diamond in the rough and player that very well may be drafted as an overager before he ever arrives in North Andover, Massachusetts. The Warriors could use a star as they look to reinvigorate the program. Still relatively new to Division I hockey, Merrimack fired the only head coach they have ever had at the top collegiate level in Mark Dennehy following this past season. The team has failed to advance past the quarterfinals of the Hockey East tournament since 2011 and have had six straight seasons with losing records. Merrimack needs to improve their performance if they hope to attract elite talent possibly landing a legitimate NHL prospect in Huhtamaa as their future starting goalie could be a good start.

Nando Eggenberger Eyeing Jump To North America Following Draft

Sometimes the younger players who look good early on don’t end up being the players who look the best come draft day. Often times, players can stall in their development and never take those next steps that scouts anticipate when evaluating their potential. Such is the case with Swiss winger Nando Eggenberger. The talented power forward was one of the first players of the 2018 draft class to get considerable attention years ago. Now, with the NHL Draft fast approaching, Eggenberger’s stock is at a new low. Perhaps hoping to incite optimism in interested teams, Eggenberger is reportedly considering a move to North America and would be a top target in the CHL Import Draft. His pro team in the Swiss NLA, HC Davos, revealed that the young forward has received interest from teams and is contemplating the jump.

The move could definitely serve to benefit Eggenberger. While still an intriguing prospect, he is no longer in the position that he once was. At one point, Eggenberger’s name was often found in the same sentence as 2017 first overall pick Nico Hischier as pundits evaluated the next wave of elite Swiss youth. Eggenberger is a true sniper and a strong skater and knows how to use his size both in front of the net and to win defensive battles. This time last year, Eggenberger had already played a full season of pro hockey at the highest level in Switzerland – and the NLA is considered one of the top European leagues – and while his low offensive production was foreseeable, pundits applauded his ability to skate and hold his own at that level as a kid not even old enough for the draft. “The Draft Analyst” Steve Kournianos even called Eggenberger a top ten player to watch. However, with the world indeed watching, Eggenberger did not get any better this season. He played in eight more games for Davos this year than last but registered the same amount of points and dropped from a +3 rating to a -12 on a very good team. Playing against competition his own age and ability at the World Juniors, many expected Eggenberger to lead the Swiss squad and show off his ability. Instead he went scoreless and posted a -9 rating in five games as the Swiss won just one game. He continues to play a one-dimensional game that lacks offensive forethought and creativity. A player with incredible tools that can’t put himself in a position to properly use them lacks career upside. As a result, Kournianos has Eggenberger ranked 78th in his final draft ranking and that is still an elevated opinion. Future Considerations ranks him at #88, while the Athletic’s Corey Pronman and Scott Wheeler both declined to put him on their draft boards.

Hoping to at least go in the first half of the draft this month, publicizing a potential move to North America is smart for Eggenberger. In the CHL, he cannot be used as a hired gun for only specific purposes as a pro team like Davos was able to use him. Eggenberger will be forced to play a complete game as his ability would surely make him a top-six forward for nearly any team. This responsibility could do wonders for his development into a more thoughtful, well-rounded player. Adding that potential growth into the calculus of his draft value, teams may be looking to bump Eggenberger back up their draft boards. Even if he doesn’t make the jump, the timing of this rumor from his team suits his draft stock well. Eggenberger will be a player to keep an eye out for during the later rounds on June 23rd.

CHL Announces Top Players Awards for 2017-18

The CHL announced their top player awards Saturday with Alex Barre-Boulet garnering the Sportsnet Player of the Year Award. The 21-year-old who played for the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada of the QMJHL, tallied 53 goals and 116 points to capture the award, beating out Everett Silvertips goaltender Carter Hart and the Sarnia Stings forward Jordan Kyrou. The 5-foot-9 Barre-Boulet, who went undrafted, signed an entry level contract in March with the Tampa Bay Lightning and will likely report to their AHL franchise next year.

While Hart fell short of winning the Player of the Year award, he didn’t walk away without one as the Philadelphia Flyers prospect won the Vaughn Goaltending of the Year award for the second time. The 19-year-old who starred for Team Canada at the World Juniors as well, blew the competition away with a 1.60 GAA in 41 games and putting up an impressive .947 save percentage. He beat out Windsor Spitfires Michael DiPietro and Rouyn-Noranda Huskies’ Samuel Harvey.

The Vegas Golden Knights picked up another award as prospect Nicolas Hague won the Superstore Defenseman of the Year award. The second-round pick in 2017 from the OHL’s Mississauga Steelheads totaled 35 goals and 78 points in 67 games last season. He beat out Moose Jaw Warriors Kale Clague and Acadie-Bathurst Titan’s Olivier Galipeau.

Andrei Svechnikov of the Barrie Colts won the Sherwin Williams Top Prospect Award as the Barrie Colts winger put up 40 goals in his rookie year in the OHL. Svenchikov is considered by many to be the second player to come off the board in the 2018 NHL Draft. He beat out Spokane Chiefs defenseman Ty Smith and Halifax Mooseheads Filip Zadina.

Snapshots: Heiskanen, Bachman, Belov

It has been quite a year for Miro Heiskanen, the third overall pick last year by the Dallas Stars. The young defenseman put up 23 points in 30 games in the Finnish Liiga, played well at the World Juniors and the Olympics, and most recently has starred in the World Championships. As reported by the Associated Press, the only logical next step is the NHL. “I want to play there as soon as possible, that’s my goal”, Heiskanen said about joining the league’s best in the NHL next season. Heiskanen knows that he could still get stronger and smarter, but his skill is very clearly pro-ready. Heiskanen is likely to step in and immediately play a key two-way role on the Dallas blue line. Expect the announcement sooner rather than later that arguably the best defensive prospect in hockey will be a full-time Star next season.

  • Former Stars goalie Richard Bachman has struggled to ever be more in the NHL than he was as Dallas’ primary backup in 2011-12. He has spent almost all of the past five years toiling in the AHL for the Edmonton Oilers and Vancouver Canucks. Heading into free agency, it seems Bachman has decided to move on from the NHL. Swedish news site Hockey Sverige reports that Bachman is expected to sign with Timra of the SHL. Instead of sitting behind Swedes – Jacob Markstrom and Anders Nilsson – in the NHL, the 30-year-old Bachman is expected to be given the starter’s job initially with Timra as he begins a new chapter in his career.
  • Former NHL defenseman Anton Belov won’t be making the jump across the Atlantic this summer. The Russian rearguard has re-signed with SKA St. Petersburg of the KHL, the team he has played with since leaving the Edmonton Oilers in 2013-14, for three more years per a team release. This extension likely rules out a future return to the NHL for the 31-year-old, though he will remain a visible name on the international stage as a top defender for a perennial KHL contender and as a frequent member of Russian national teams.

Eeli Tolvanen Headed To World Championships For Finland

Eeli Tolvanen must like flying. The 19-year old sniper has been added to the roster for Team Finland at the ongoing IIHF World Championships, just the latest chapter in an incredible season. Tolvanen played a full season in the KHL before signing and making his NHL debut with the Nashville Predators. Meanwhile, he also suited up for Finland at the World Juniors and Olympic Games.

Selected 30th-overall last June, Tolvanen has had quite the year. He broke several recorded for scoring in the KHL, and performed well at both previous international tournaments. Though he wasn’t able to make an impact in Nashville during their playoff run, he should carve out a full-time role there next year. Joining Finland at the World Championships, he has another chance to win an international medal before finishing his year.

The Predators will not be heading to the Western Conference finals this season after being knocked out by the Winnipeg Jets, but should contend for the Stanley Cup again next season. With players like Tolvanen and Dante Fabbro set to make an impact at the NHL level in the coming years, there doesn’t appear to be a lull coming in Nashville anytime soon.

Overseas Notes: Cameron, Lewis, Huska

Dave Cameron did not stay unemployed for very long, though his new position is far from where he has made his living for the last thirty-odd years. The Erste Bank Liga (EBEL), a lower-tier European league based mostly in Austria, has announced that Cameron has been named the new head coach of the Vienna Capitals, the league’s reigning regular season champions. Cameron had been working as an assistant coach for the Calgary Flames for the past two seasons, but was relieved last month alongside head coach Glen Gulutzan. Prior to that position, he has served as the head coach for the Ottawa Senators after working his way up from long-time assistant. Even before that, Cameron was showing the breadth of his hockey mind as both the head coach and GM of several OHL franchises. Yet, this new job is his first outside of North America and brings with it the challenges of a brand new market and caliber of player. However, Cameron is an experienced coach and should find his way in no time at all in Vienna.

  • Another coach has not been so lucky. Dave Lewis, most well known for a long stint as assistant and head coach of the Detroit Red Wings from the late 80’s through the mid-2000’s, has lost his job with the Belarus national program, per insider Igor Eronko. Lewis, who also had a short-lived stint as Boston Bruins head coach and brief stops as an assistant with the Los Angeles Kings and Carolina Hurricanes, has been working for Belarus in various roles since 2014. He had guided four IIHF World Championship teams, an Olympic qualifying bid, and the team’s World Juniors appearance this season. However, just three games into the ongoing Worlds, national officials have clearly decided that they have had enough with the lack of success out of their long-time coach. Lewis has struggled to find results as a head coach over the years and the next step for the 64-year-old is a mystery.
  • Although Adam Huska likely has two years left at the University of Connecticut, HK Sochi of the KHL may have made a shrewd move in acquiring the KHL rights to the Slovak goaltender today. The team reported this morning that Huska’s rights had been transferred to Sochi from Lokomotiv Yaroslavl in exchange for forward Dmitri Lugin. Huska was a seventh-round pick of the New York Rangers in 2015, but given the team’s depth in goalie prospects – Alexandar Georgiev, Brandon Halverson, and mostly Igor Shestyorkin – it’s quite possible that Huska could choose to return home to Europe, in which case Sochi will gain a talented, young netminder. Huska posted a .912 save percentage and 2.59 GAA in 27 starts last year and should only continue to thrive in net for UConn before he makes his decision on turning pro.

Blackhawks Sign German Forward Dominik Kahun

As expected for some time, Dominik Kahun has turned his success in his native Germany and at the 2018 Winter Olympics into his first NHL contract. The Athletic’s Scott Powers reports that the Chicago Blackhawks have signed Kahun to an entry-level deal. Both Kahun and the Blackhawks have confirmed the contract and CapFriendly reports that it is a two-year deal worth the ELC-max $925 base salary, but nothing has been publicly announced. Chicago has long been considered the favorite to sign Kahun and could be willing to give the affordable talent an NHL look sooner rather than later.

The 22-year-old forward is coming off quite the season. His DEL team, EHC Munchen, were league champions, as Kahun finished third in scoring with 41 points in 42 games, and Team Germany made an unlikely run to a silver medal at the Winter Games in Pyeongchang behind Kahun’s five points in seven games. All around, this has been the best season of Kahun’s career and he has caught the eye of many around the hockey world.

Now, the next test will be to see if his talent translates to the NHL. This year’s NHL-less Olympics and certainly the DEL are not comparable to the best hockey league in the world. However, Kahun also had past success in the OHL and at the World Juniors, which are better predictors of NHL success. What Kahun lacks in exceptional size, speed, or strength, he makes up for with great vision and intelligence and next-level stick skills. If Kahun continues to work hard and strive for success, expect him to find immediate success in the AHL and perhaps in Chicago as well.

An Underwhelming 2018 Goalie Draft Class

There are already 15 teams whose 2017-18 season has come to and end, with eight more joining the group in the next week or two. For those teams, full attention has already been turned to preparing for the off-season. The first major event of the summer is the NHL Entry Draft, coming up on June 22-23, where teams can add promising young prospects at every position. However, for any teams in need of a major addition in net to the pipeline, the 2018 class leaves a lot to be desired.

The days of goaltenders being selected early in the first round may be over, but at least one goalie has been selected in the first fifty picks of the draft every year since the turn of the century, including several years with multiple first-round keepers. That streak may come to an end in 2018. Somewhat lost in the hype of top prospects like Rasmus Dahlin and many other high-ceiling forwards and defenseman is the fact that few see any young goaltenders worthy of value picks this year. The first mock drafts from NHL.com and Yahoo both fail to include any keepers in the top 31 picks and Sportsnet’s latest Top 31 makes no mention of one either. The Hockey Writers takes it one step further, including just one goaltender among the first 75 players in their Top 93.

That one goalie, Czech pro Jakub Skarek, is a polarizing prospect. Skarek has good size and put up good numbers for HC Dukla Jihlava, one of the worst teams in the top Czech league, earning his top ranking among European goalies by NHL Central Scouting. Yet, Skarek also looked completely over-matched at the World Juniors and many feel is still a very raw talent, lending some explanation to what some feel is a third-round grade. Skarek may be the best the class has to offer though. The QMJHL offers a relatively strong group – Alexis Gravel, Olivier Rodrigue, and Kevin Mandolese – but all pale in comparison to top prospects from recent draft years.

Could one of these goalies slip into the first round? It would be a major surprise. The top fifty picks? That could more likely, but at this point in the pre-draft process seems to also be a stretch. So, for those teams in need of a top goaltender in the system, and there a quite a few, this may be the year to look for a sleeper in the late rounds rather than reach for an underwhelming option early on.

Prospects In The OHL Playoffs: Vilardi, Pu, Brown

The NHL playoffs aren’t the only teams vying for postseason supremacy. The OHL playoffs are finishing up the second round, with two teams close to moving on. Here’s a look at some of the prospects who may be on the NHL ice sooner rather than later. 

The Kingston Frontenacs were busy at the OHL trade deadline and added fire power in the way of Gabe Vilardi (Los Angeles), and Cliff Pu (Buffalo), who certainly delivered as expected through two rounds of the playoffs. Not only has Kingston secured a spot in the next round after dispatching Barrie in six games, Vilardi and Pu are first and fourth in points respectively, with teammate Linus Nyman tied at 16 points. Pu was impressive with London, so much so that Kingston went out and snagged him to guarantee scoring depth and a chance at its first Robertson Cup. Back in January, the Global News’ Doug Jeffries wrote about how Pu brought experience from the Knights’ Memorial Cup win in 2016. It surely has paid off for both the Frontenacs and Pu, who was a third round pick for the Sabres and whose value continues to rise.

Vilardi nursed an injury for the first half of the OHL season, but the former Windsor Spitfire played as strong as expected when on the ice, notching 58 points (22-36) in 32 games.  Vilardi has been just as dominant in the playoffs, leading the league in points (20) and goals (11). After signing an entry level deal back in March, barring injury there might be a strong case to be made for Vilardi suiting up in Los Angeles next season. The 11th overall pick of the 2017 NHL draft also won a Memorial Cup that same year.

One non-Frontenac making some noise is Kitchener’s Logan Brown (Ottawa), who was the 11th overall pick for the Sens back in 2016. Like Vilardi, Brown was also traded by Windsor in January and picked up where he left off, averaging over a point-per-game with his new club. The playoffs have seen Brown notch 19 points in 11 games as the Rangers currently hold a 3-2 advantage in the second round. Though only two of those 19 points have been goals, the Senators have to be pleased that Brown continues to produce. The Sens skated him in four games this past fall before sending him back to the Spitfires. Add in an impressive performance during the the World Juniors as well, Brown may find himself with the big club for a longer stay, especially since the team will most likely be retooling with youth in the 2018-19 season.

New York Islanders Sign Otto Koivula To Three-Year Deal

The New York Islanders have added another intriguing young forward prospect, signing Otto Koivula to a three-year entry-level contract. The 19-year old forward recently finished his second full season in the Finnish Liiga, and could now potentially come over to spend some time on North American ice over the next few weeks.

Koivula was named Rookie of the Year last season when he scored 30 points in 50 games, using his size and creativity to create offense for himself and linemates. He was selected in the fourth round of the 2016 draft, and remains something of a project for the Islanders despite some interesting potential. At 6’4″ 220-lbs, Koivula plays with more skill than players of his size normally do, and could develop into a powerful offensive threat if everything clicks.

At the most recent World Juniors, Koivula recorded just two points in six games, and this season saw him register just 27 points in 53 games for his club team. While that is sort of a step backwards, he wasn’t put in as many offensive situations as Ilves relied on some different players this season. It’s not clear if he’s coming over for AHL play next season, as he could still be loaned back to Europe in 2018-19.
