Minor Transactions: 12/10/22

There have been a few international transactions today with some sort of present or former NHL connection.  We’ll run through those here plus an early minor move at the NHL level.

  • Veteran winger Pontus Aberg has joined the SC Rapperswil-Jona Lakers in Switzerland, per a team announcement. The 29-year-old had been playing in the Czech Extraliga until now as he notched 13 points in 26 games.  Aberg has 132 career NHL games under his belt over parts of four seasons and has been quite productive at the AHL level with 199 points in 277 games.  He last was under contract with Ottawa last season before having his deal terminated to go play in Sweden.
  • It didn’t take long for Victor Berglund to find his next team. After clearing unconditional waivers yesterday, the Bruins terminated his contract and he has caught on with HIFK in Finland who announced they’ve signed the defenseman for the rest of the season.  The 23-year-old had played in just five games with AHL Providence this year and it was looking likely that he wouldn’t be tendered a qualifying offer this summer.
  • After splitting time this season between two different teams in Finland’s SM-liiga, Maple Leafs prospect Kalle Loponen will be dropping down a level as Kettera of the Mestis announced they will the defender on a long-term loan during the Christmas break. Loponen spent seven games with them last season after having a limited role in the top division.  Toronto has until June 1st to sign the 2019 seventh-rounder who has two assists in 18 games so far this season.
  • Following their game last night, the Avalanche announced (Twitter link) that they’ve sent forward Cal Burke back to AHL Colorado. Burke played just under seven minutes last night in his second career NHL appearance.  The Avs are off until tomorrow and at that point, it’s possible that Burke will be recalled.

Bruins Notes: Coyle, Lysell, Injuries

To say it’s been an eventful offseason for the Boston Bruins would be an understatement. With the extensions for Taylor Hall and Mike Reilly and the acquisitions of Linus Ullmark and Nick Foligno came some serious departures. Longtime Bruin David Krejci left the team to continue his career at home in the Czech Republic, while netminder Tuukka Rask remains unsigned amid injury uncertainty. While Krejci’s replacement as the second-line center isn’t entirely clear, the frontrunner in the eyes of most is Charlie Coyle. However, as The Athletic’s Fluto Shinzawa notes, Coyle’s participation could be limited at the start of training camp. While not ordinarily a huge cause for concern, the news comes after it was revealed Coyle suffered through injury for much of last season and underwent knee surgery in July. It was an inordinately rough season for Coyle last year, who scored just six goals and 16 points in 51 games. An elevated role playing with Hall will likely boost those point totals. The team will be relying on Coyle much more next season to produce, meaning his health as the start of the season approaches could be a real storyline in Boston.

  • General manager Don Sweeney, speaking after the Bruins’ development camp games concluded today, says that 2021 first-round pick Fabian Lysell will likely be playing in North American this season. Lysell signed his entry-level contract this summer after spending last season with Luleå HF in Sweden, but the signing offered little clarity over where he could take the ice in 2021-22. A loan back to Sweden was still possible, but it now appears he’ll be playing junior hockey this season with the WHL’s Vancouver Giants. It’s important to note that due to his European status and lack of a junior contract, Lysell was indeed eligible to suit up with the Providence Bruins in the AHL this year.
  • Shinzawa also notes that a trio of Bruins prospects — Victor Berglund, Josiah Didier, and J.D. Greenway — are all injured and unavailable for the beginning of training camp. The most exciting of these names to follow is undoubtedly Berglund’s. A seventh-round pick of the squad in 2017, he’s developed extremely well in his native Sweden. Loaned out to Luleå this year, sharing a team with Lysell, the 22-year-old impressed in his first season of SHL action with 21 points in 50 games. Likely a candidate to play serious minutes with Providence this year, Bruins fans may have to wait a little while to see him on the ice again.

International Notes: Erat, KHL Rights Swap, Berglund, DEL

Veteran winger Martin Erat has spent the past five seasons playing overseas after a 13-year NHL stint but he told Zdenek Janda of iSport that he has decided to call it a career.  Injuries limited the 38-year-old to just 16 games with HC Kometa Brno this season but he had been close to a point per game player in the previous three years in the Czech Extraliga.

Erat’s NHL time ended on a relatively quiet note (aside from being part of a trade that Washington would like to forget) but in his prime, he was a reliable and consistent top-six winger, collecting at least 49 points in a stretch of eight consecutive seasons, all with Nashville.  Overall, his career winds up with a total of 163 goals and 318 assists in 723 games between the Predators, Capitals, and Coyotes.

Elsewhere around the international hockey world:

  • A pair of NHL prospect goaltenders have seen their rights traded in the KHL. HK Sochi announced that they’ve acquired the rights to Jets youngster Mikhail Berdin from CSKA Moscow in exchange for Coyotes prospect Ivan Prosvetov.  Both netminders are already under contract to their respective NHL teams for next season but with the start of the 2020-21 AHL campaign certainly in question as long as there are restrictions in terms of allowable attendance, it’s a real possibility that players that are a little lower down the depth chart (Berdin and Prosetov played exclusively in the minors this year) are loaned to the KHL to ensure a full season of development.
  • Although he signed his entry-level contract back on Monday, don’t expect Bruins prospect Victor Berglund to play in North America next season. Reporter Mark Divver notes (Twitter link) that Berglund is expected to fulfill his previous commitment to play in Lulea of the SHL for the 2020-21 campaign and then come to North America after.  It will be his first taste of action at the top level in Sweden after previously playing in their second-tier Allsvenskan.
  • Earlier this week, Germany extended its ban on public events through the end of October due to the ongoing pandemic. Accordingly, as Szymon Szemberg of the Alliance of European Hockey Clubs notes (Twitter link), that places the start of the DEL in jeopardy and will also have an impact on other international events such as the Champions Hockey League which is set to begin its 2020-21 schedule in early October.  A handful of NHL free agents (often those who have been in the minors for most of the year) sign in the DEL each year but that now may be one opportunity that they opt not to pursue this offseason.

Bruins Sign Victor Berglund

With Monday being the deadline for players under contract next season for teams in countries that have transfer agreements with the NHL to sign an NHL deal, there have been quite a few signings today.  Boston has joined in on the action as CapFriendly reports that they’ve signed defenseman Victor Berglund to a three-year, entry-level contract.  The deal carries an AAV of just over $818K before performance bonuses and breaks down as follows:

2020-21: $775.5K salary (including signing bonus), $70K AHL salary, no performance bonuses
2021-22: $835K salary (including signing bonus), $70K AHL salary, $15K performance bonuses
2022-23: $842.5K salary (including signing bonus), $70K AHL salary, $82.5K performance bonuses

Berglund was a seventh-round pick of the Bruins back in 2017 (195th overall) and has spent time in Sweden’s second-tier pro league (Allsvenskan) since his draft-eligible year while playing in MODO’s system.  This season, he picked up 10 goals and 12 assists in 52 games and got into a pair of games in the qualification round before the COVID-19 pandemic put an end to that.

The 20-year-old has committed to transfer to Lulea of the SHL for next season back in March but presumably will now set his sights on a full year in North America with AHL Providence.  It won’t be Berglund’s first foray into the AHL though as he got into four games with them late in the 2019 season.
