Taxi Squad Shuffle: 03/27/21

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day:

North Division

  • The Maple Leafs announced that they have brought up Timothy Liljegren and Nicholas Robertson to the taxi squad from the AHL’s Marlies while Kristians Rubins was sent from the taxi squad to the Marlies. Robertson was expected to push for regular playing time this season but a knee injury in his season debut changed those plans; he had been getting back up to speed in the minors over the last few weeks.
  • The Senators have recalled Erik Brannstrom and Jack Kopacka from the minors to the taxi squad while sending Christian Wolanin and Alex Formenton to AHL Belleville, per the AHL’s transactions page.  Wolanin cleared waivers yesterday while Formenton scored his second career goal back on Tuesday.  Brannstrom is the notable recall and has played in 14 games with Ottawa so far this season.

East Division

  • The Flyers announced the recall of Samuel Morin from the taxi squad. The 25-year-old – who has spent time up front this year after being a defenseman for his entire career – has played in just five games with Philadelphia this season.
  • The Sabres announced that they’ve recalled Jean-Sebastien Dea from the taxi squad while C.J. Smith and Michael Houser have been loaned to the taxi squad.  Dea has 32 career games of NHL experience but has yet to suit up with Buffalo this season.  Houser was able to be sent down with Linus Ullmark being activated off IR (along with Kyle Okposo).
  • The Penguins have recalled Drew O’Connor from the taxi squad, per a team release.  He is taking the place of Kasperi Kapanen on Pittsburgh’s roster with the winger being placed on injured reserve.  Jordy Bellerive and Josh Currie were also recalled to the taxi squad from AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

  • The New Jersey Devils have sent Colton White to the AHL, moving him off the taxi squad after only recalling him yesterday. White, 23, has played in nine games at the AHL level this season but hasn’t yet cracked the New Jersey lineup. Later in the day, the team assigned Nicholas Merkley to the taxi squad and recalled Jesper Boqvist in time to play in this evening’s game.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 03/25/21

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day:

West Division

  • The Colorado Avalanche have recalled T.J. Tynan and Sheldon Dries to the taxi squad, filling out the two vacant spots they had after sending Conor Timmins down yesterday. Dries has played three games for the Avalanche this season but is still looking for his first NHL point since the 2018-19 campaign. Logan O’Connor was also recalled from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.
  • The San Jose Sharks have recalled Jeffrey Viel to the taxi squad from the AHL. The 24-year-old has yet to play an NHL game in his short career but could add a bit of physicality to the lineup if the Sharks need it. In his 139-game AHL career, Viel has 18 fighting majors and 228 penalty minutes. Antti Suomela and Christian Jaros were sent to the taxi squad while Zach Gallant was sent back to the AHL, per CapFriendly.
  • After announcing that Tyler Pitlick is out week-to-week with a lower-body injury, the Arizona Coyotes have moved him to injured reserve. Meanwhile, they’ve swapped Frederik Gauthier and Lane Pederson between the taxi squad and AHL.
  • The Anaheim Ducks have sent Andy Welinski and Lukas Dostal back to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Welinski played a season-high 18:11 last night while Dostal served as the backup goaltender.
  • The Dallas Stars have made a large number of roster moves. Nick Caamano, Justin Dowling, Rhett Gardner, and Joel L’Esperance were all promoted from the taxi squad while Ty Dellandrea and Tanner Kero were recalled to the taxi squad.
  • The Los Angeles Kings have sent Austin Strand and Tobias Bjornfot to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Bjornfot has three assists in 17 games this season while Strand has a helper in six games.
  • The Minnesota Wild have promoted Will Bitten to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The 22-year-old has four assists in 11 games with AHL Iowa this season.
  • The St. Louis Blues have brought up Dakota Joshua and Jake Walman from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The two have made frequent appearances on this list in recent weeks as they’ve been sent down on non-game days to save some money.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights have recalled Patrick Brown from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. He has played in three games for Vegas so far this season. Carl Dahlstrom was recalled to the taxi squad to take Brown’s place.

North Division

Central Division

  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled Mikhail Grigorenko from the taxi squad once again as he continues to move on and off the roster on a daily basis. The 26-year-old forward now has seven points in 18 games this season.
  • As expected, the Carolina Hurricanes have promoted Jake Bean from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. The defenseman has 10 points in 21 games so far this season.
  • The Chicago Blackhawks have promoted Wyatt Kalynuk from the taxi squad while sending Mackenzie Entwistle down, per CapFriendly. Both players have played just once for Chicago this season.
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning have brought up Luke Schenn and Andreas Borgman from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Even so, they’re unable to dress a full roster tonight due to injuries to Ryan McDonagh and Erik Cernak.

COVID Protocol Related Absences: 03/24/21

Each day, the NHL will publicly release the list of players that are unavailable to their respective teams due to being in COVID-19 Protocol. Here is the list for today so far:

Anaheim – Danton HeinenBen HuttonJacob LarssonAnthony Stolarz
Boston – Jake DeBruskSean Kuraly
Calgary – TBA
Minnesota – Zach Parise*
Montreal – Joel ArmiaJesperi Kotkaniemi
NY Rangers – Phil Di GiuseppeBrett Howden (plus their coaching staff)
Ottawa – TBA
Vancouver – Travis Boyd
Winnipeg – TBA

As a reminder, inclusion on this list does not mean that a player has tested positive for Coronavirus or even that they have been confirmed as a close contact to another positive person. Included in the NHL’s list of possible reasons for someone being on the list is are the following:

(1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact in accordance with the Positive Test Protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons as outlined in the COVID-19 Protocol

Players removed today: David Krejci, Boston Bruins; David Pastrnak, Boston Bruins; Craig Smith, Boston Bruins; Noah Dobson, New York Islanders

Minnesota had actually announced Andrew Hammond entered the protocol yesterday, but his name did not appear on the report. Now only Parise is present, with the team recalling Joseph Cramarossa under emergency conditions for tonight’s game. It’s unclear what has happened to Hammond, but perhaps the team is not including him on the list while he remains on the taxi squad.

The Bruins will practice this evening after three names came off the list, the same day that the NHL had hoped they would return to normal when things were first shut down. Still, DeBrusk and Kuraly remain in the protocol for now and will be unavailable until they exit.

It’s great news that it remains just two names for the Canadiens, who had four games postponed out of an abundance of caution. Hopefully, things will stay contained for the team and they can get back to normal next week.

After briefly appearing when the list was released, Dobson has also been removed. The Islanders defenseman will not be traveling with the team for their next three games but is eligible to return whenever ready to play.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 03/24/21

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day:

West Division

  • Conor Timmins has appeared on the AHL transaction page, apparently sent down by the Colorado Avalanche after being moved to the taxi squad yesterday. The young defenseman has played in 17 games for the Avalanche this season but is–incredibly–still looking for his first NHL point. Timmins had 27 of them last season in just 40 games with the Colorado Eagles of the AHL.

North Division

  • The Ottawa Senators have recalled Clark Bishop and Alex Formenton from the taxi squad, with the latter expected to make his season debut in the early game this evening. After scoring 27 goals and 53 points in 61 AHL games last season, Formenton hasn’t been able to create as much offense this year, scoring just four times in 12 games. The team has also recalled Olle Alsing and Jack Kopacka to the taxi squad while sending Kevin Mandolese back to the AHL.

Central Division

East Division

  • The Washington Capitals have re-assigned Brian Pinho and Philippe Maillet from the taxi squad to the AHL, with the Hershey Bears playing tonight. Neither one has suited up in the AHL yet this season, instead just seeing spot duty on the NHL squad.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers have swapped goaltenders, moving Alex Lyon from the taxi squad to the AHL and Felix Sandstrom from the AHL to the taxi squad. The Lehigh Valley Phantoms are in action tonight, meaning Lyon may get in some game action to stay fresh.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled Radim Zohorna from the taxi squad, moving Brandon Tanev to injured reserve to make room. Sam Miletic and Justin Almeida have been re-assigned to the taxi squad from the AHL.

Leo Komarov Clears Waivers

March 24: As expected, Komarov has cleared waivers and can now bounce between the taxi squad and roster whenever necessary.

March 23: In what has become a monthly routine, the New York Islanders have placed Leo Komarov on waivers today according to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet. The veteran forward has already cleared waivers twice this season, once on January 13 and once on February 13, but continues to suit up and play with the Islanders. Last night he even started on the team’s first line, but if they want to move him to the taxi squad he needed to clear again since more than a month has passed.

Komarov, 34, has just two points in 16 games for the team this season and hasn’t totaled more than seven goals in a single year since the 2016-17 campaign. The bang-and-crash winger is capable defensively, but the offensive output that once got him selected to the All-Star game has completely dried up. Still, he seems to still be a favorite of head coach Barry Trotz, who inserts him into the lineup on a regular basis to add some energy.

There is almost no way that Komarov is claimed this time around given how little cap space is available around the league. The veteran forward carries a $3MM cap hit through the end of next season, a number that far outstretches his on-ice contribution. More likely is he will clear and continue to play a part-time role on the Islanders down the stretch.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 03/23/21

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day:

West Division

North Division

  • The Ottawa Senators have re-assigned Clark Bishop to the taxi squad, where he’ll be joined by Alex Formenton who is up from the AHL. The Senators took home a big win against the Flames last night and will have a rematch tomorrow evening.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled Mac Hollowell, Kristians Rubins, and Scott Sabourin to the taxi squad, sending Martin Marincin, Timothy Liljegren, and Nic Petan to the AHL for Wednesday’s Toronto Marlies game. The team will likely make a swap again the next day, bringing the more experienced taxi squad members back up.
  • The Winnipeg Jets have re-assigned Dominic Toninato back to the taxi squad after he failed to get into the lineup last night. Toninato still hasn’t gotten into a game this season after playing 46 with the Panthers last year.
  • The Calgary Flames have sent Zac Rinaldo and Alexander Petrovic to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Rinaldo played in just his third game of the season last night while Petrovic has yet to see NHL action this season.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 03/22/21

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day:

West Division

North Division

Central Division

  • The Columbus Blue Jackets unexpectedly recalled Mikhail Grigorenko from the taxi squad, even though head coach John Tortorella said there would be no lineup changes. Brian Hedger of the Columbus Dispatch reports that the move was likely precautionary, meaning someone is dealing with a minor injury.
  • The Nashville Predators have moved Rem Pitlick and Alexandre Carrier to the taxi squad, another one of their daily moves to conserve cap and cash. Pitlick was only up on an emergency loan yesterday and has played in four games this season.
  • The Dallas Stars have moved Justin Dowling and Tanner Kero back to the taxi squad, given that they don’t play until tomorrow. The Stars are coming off another shootout loss, taking their record to 10-10-8 on the season.

East Division

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have sent Sam Miletic back to the AHL after calling him up over the weekend to the taxi squad. The 23-year-old is still waiting to make his NHL debut and has two points in six games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins so far.
  • The Buffalo Sabres have recalled both Rasmus Asplund and Dustin Tokarski from the taxi squad, announcing that Kyle Okposo is not with the team on their current road trip as he nurses an injury. Carter Hutton starts tonight for the Sabres.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 03/21/21

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day:

Central Division

  • The Chicago Blackhawks announced several roster moves, swapping nine different players between the taxi squad and the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL. The team assigned four players from Rockford to the taxi squad, including forwards Mikael Hakkarainen, Brandon Pirri, John Quenneville and defenseman Alec Regula. The Blackhawks also assigned five players from the taxi squad to the AHL, including forward Reese Johnson and defensemen Nicolas Beaudin, Madison Bowey, Lucas Carlsson and Wyatt Kalynuk.
  • The Columbus Blue Jackets announced they have activated center Alexandre Texier off the COVID-19 protocol list and assigned him to the taxi squad. The team has also assigned forward Mikhail Grigorenko to the taxi squad as well. Texier has missed two games while being on the protocol list, but it’s possible that Texier has been assigned to the taxi squad to accrue salary cap space since the team doesn’t play until Monday.
  • The Nashville Predators announced they have recalled forward Rem Pitlick from the taxi squad. Pitlick, who has dominated in the AHL this season (eight goals and 10 points in eight games), has appeared in three games with the Predators but is still looking for his first NHL point.
  • The Dallas Stars announced they have swapped a pair of players between the NHL and taxi squads. The team has recalled forward Justin Dowling from the taxi squad, while re-assigning Nicholas Caamano back to the taxi squad.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes have assigned Jake Bean to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. It’s a familiar move for the defenseman on non-game days who has been sent down many times already but has still played in 20 games this season, recording 10 points.
  • The Detroit Red Wings announced that they sent defenseman Dennis Cholowski to the taxi squad. The 23-year-old played in 88 games over his first two seasons but has suited up just once with Detroit this season.

East Division

  • The Buffalo Sabres announced they have assigned forward Steven Fogarty from the Rochester Americans of the AHL to the taxi squad. They also have loaned recently signed goaltender Michael Houser to the taxi squad as well. Fogarty, who has been impressive in Rochester (five goals, eight points in 10 games) has only played one game with the Sabres this season.
  • The New Jersey Devils have made several transactions, announcing they have placed forward Nathan Bastian on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. Bastian has played 27 games for the Devils this year with two goals and six points. The team promoted forward Michael McLeod from the taxi squad to replace Bastian on the roster. The Devils also swapped four players between the taxi squad and the Binghamton Devils of the AHL. They have assigned defenseman Joshua Jacobs and goaltender Gilles Senn to Binghamton while promoting defenseman Jeremy Groleau and David Quenneville to the taxi squad.
  • The New York Islanders assigned forward Oliver Wahlstrom to the taxi squad while sending goaltender Jakub Skarek to the AHL, per CapFriendly.  Wahlstrom has played in 25 games with the Isles this season, picking up seven goals and seven assists.
  • The New York Rangers made their usual large series of moves on a non-game day.  Per CapFriendly, forward Kaapo Kakko and goalie Keith Kinkaid were sent to the taxi squad with goalie Adam Huska recalled to the NHL roster.  Defenceman Anthony Bitetto was recalled to the taxi squad from AHL Hartford while forward Jonny Brodzinski was sent to Hartford.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers sent defenseman Nate Prosser and forward Carsen Twarynski to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Meanwhile, forward Matthew Strome was sent to Lehigh Valley of the AHL.

North Division

  • The Ottawa Senators announced that they have recalled Anton Forsberg from his conditioning loan with Belleville.  The loan lasted just one game but with Ottawa’s injury situation in goal with their top three goalies all hurt, Forsberg will be needed right away.
  • The Calgary Flames recalled Dominik Simon from the taxi squad while sending Derek Ryan, Zac Rinaldo, and Alex Petrovic to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Ryan and Rinaldo have been frequently sent down on non-game days with Simon being the recall in those situations in recent weeks.
  • With the Montreal Canadiens off today, they have sent forward Paul Byron and defenseman Xavier Ouellet to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. Despite clearing waivers twice, Byron has played in almost every game this season while Ouellet has played three games so far.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs sent forward Alex Galchenyuk and Michael Hutchinson to the taxi squad while recalling defenseman Timothy Liljegren to the active roster, per CapFriendly. Galchenyuk made his Toronto debut recently and has an assist in two games with the Maple Leafs.
  • The Vancouver Canucks recalled defenseman Brogan Rafferty to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly. He was a high-scoring blueliner in the minors last season but has played just one game this year, recording an assist in January.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 03/20/21

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day:

West Division

  • After clearing waivers, Michael Amadio has been sent to the taxi squad by the Los Angeles Kings. With that move made, the team then loaned Lias Andersson to Ontario of the AHL; the 22-year-old hasn’t seen any NHL action in more than a month.
  • The Minnesota Wild have recalled Joseph Cramarossa from the taxi squad while sending Luke Johnson to the taxi squad. Cramarossa will make his Minnesota debut tonight; it will be his first NHL game in almost four years.
  • The Colorado Avalanche have swapped backup goaltenders as their AHL affiliate announced that Hunter Miska has been sent down while Adam Werner was recalled to the Avs. Miska struggled in his last outing on Tuesday, allowing four goals on just seven shots to Anaheim before being pulled after the first period.
  • It’s an even swap in Arizona, as the Coyotes have announced that two players have been recalled from the taxi squad while two others have been reassigned to the taxi squad. Forward Hudson Fasching and defenseman Jordan Gross will join the active roster, while forward Michael Chaput and goalie Ivan Prosvetov will take a seat.
  • The Anaheim Ducks have reassigned defenseman Josh Mahura directly from the active roster to the AHL’s San Diego Gulls. Mahura has played in 11 games for the Ducks this season, including each of their past eight, and has not looked out of place, but has seemingly been relegated back to the minors for the time being.

Central Division

  • The Detroit Red Wings weren’t just calling Dennis Cholowski up to skate with the taxi squad. The young defenseman has now been placed on the active roster and is expected to make his season debut this evening against the Stars. The 23-year-old Cholowski actually already has 88 games at the NHL level and was playing extremely well for the Grand Rapids Griffins before this call-up.
  • The Nashville Predators have brought up Alexandre Carrier and Ben Harpur from the taxi squad while sending Michael McCarron down to the taxi squad.  The three have frequently been involved in taxi squad moves for the past few weeks.
  • Mark Pysyk has been placed on the Injured Reserve by the Dallas Stars, retroactive to March 11 when he initially suffered his current lower-body injury. Dallas will replace Pysyk with the options already on their active roster, as they have reassigned fellow defenseman Taylor Fedun to the taxi squad and filled their open roster spots by recalling a trio of forwards: Nick Caamano, Rhett Gardnerand Tanner Kero

East Division

  • The New Jersey Devils have recalled Mikhail Maltsev and Nicholas Merkley to the active roster, while also bringing Gilles Senn up to serve as the taxi squad goaltender. The Devils will play the Pittsburgh Penguins this afternoon.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled Colton Sceviour and Anthony Angello from the taxi squad in advance of that game against New Jersey. Sam Miletic has been recalled from the AHL to the taxi squad in a corresponding move.
  • Anton Blidh has been returned to the AHL by the Boston Bruins, clearing a spot on the taxi squad and sending the 26-year-old back where he has spent most of the season. Blidh has five points in nine games for the Providence Bruins this year.
  • The New York Rangers have swapped Mason Geertsen and Jonny Brodzinski, moving the former to the AHL and the latter to the taxi squad. Geertsen, 25, is still waiting to make his NHL debut but Brodzinski, 27, has already played four games for the Rangers this season.
  • Several players are moving up the depth chart for the Philadelphia Flyers. Forward Carsen Twarynski and defenseman Nate Prosser have been promoted from the taxi squad to the active roster, while young Matthew Strome has been recalled to the taxi squad from the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
