Snapshots: Winterton, Pilling, Jarry
The Seattle Kraken announced today that forward Ryan Winterton has taken a temporary leave of absence to attend to a family matter. The Kraken did not provide further detail and requested that the privacy of Winterton and his family be respected. As is always the case with situations like these, what happens on the ice is secondary. With that said, Winterton’s absence does have lineup implications for a Kraken team that is still under pressure to chase down a playoff spot.
Winterton had missed Seattle’s last two games with an illness. Before then, he had been on one of the stronger runs of his young NHL career. He scored a goal and an assist in Seattle’s 6-2 win over the Florida Panthers on March 15, and had a solid five points in his last 11 games playing largely in a bottom-six capacity. When he was last in the lineup, Winterton occupied a fourth-line left wing spot, skating alongside Ben Meyers and Jacob Melanson. 21-year-old Jani Nyman, who has 18 goals and 27 points in just 29 AHL games this season, was placed into that fourth-line role with Winterton sidelined.
Other notes from around the NHL:
- The Minnesota Wild have interest in signing NCAA free agent center Nathan Pilling of the University of St. Thomas, Michael Russo and Joe Smith of The Athletic reported today. Pilling, who turns 22 in June, ended his first campaign of college hockey with 15 goals and 29 points in 38 games. The Calgary native, who was a point-per-game pivot in his final campaign in the WHL, has previously been tied to two NHL teams. He attended the development camp of the San Jose Sharks in 2024, and the Ottawa Senators in 2025. Pilling was ranked as the No. 5 NCAA free agent by the team at Elite Prospects, with the outlet projecting him as a “potential bottom-6 checker” with “versatile upside.”
- Veteran netminder Tristan Jarry will return to the crease for the Edmonton Oilers at some point during the team’s upcoming two-game road trip, head coach Kris Knoblauch told the media today. Jarry hasn’t made a start since surrendering seven goals in a loss to the Dallas Stars, which was on March 12. The 30-year-old began the season with a strong 14 games for the Pittsburgh Penguins, posting a .909 save percentage and 9-3-1 record. He’s struggled mightily since his trade to Edmonton, though, putting up a grisly .855 save percentage and 4.17 goals-against average in 15 games. With the Oilers looking to build momentum and lock down a playoff spot in a wide-open Pacific Division, they’ll be hoping Jarry can rediscover some of the form he had at the start of the season.
AHL Assignments: 3/6/25
Today’s trade deadline also has minor-league implications. Players must be on an AHL roster at 2:00 p.m. Central in order to be eligible to play in the Calder Cup Playoffs. As such, teams will be ferrying a large number of waiver-exempt players to the minors this morning and afternoon before recalling them before the end of the league day for cap counting at 4:00 p.m. That allows them to bypass the new rule that players must play at least one game in the minors after being reassigned before they’re eligible for a recall again.
Here’s the rundown of today’s reassignments that will be announced during the blizzard of other moves today:
- The Flames will ferry winger Matvei Gridin to the Calgary Wranglers, Ryan Pike of Flames Nation reports. The 2024 #28 overall pick is in his first professional season and is already beginning to look like a natural fit in the Flames’ top nine, posting seven points through his first 18 NHL games while averaging 14:18 of ice time per night. Gridin’s 4.17 shot attempts per game are fourth on the team after Rasmus Andersson and MacKenzie Weegar were traded away. He’s also got 10 goals and 29 points in 36 games for the Wranglers, but with the Flames’ roster thinning out as they sell pieces off, he’ll be up in the NHL for the stretch run before returning to the playoff-bound Wranglers after the regular season ends.
- The Jets announced they’ve sent winger Walker Duehr and defender Isaak Phillips to AHL Manitoba. Both may find their way back down to Manitoba on a full-time basis before the end of the season as Winnipeg gets some of its IR-bound players back in the lineup, but for now, they’ll serve as depth pieces for the Jets as they potentially subtract more talents from their roster today.
- The Mammoth sent defenseman Dmitriy Simashev to Tucson, per PuckPedia. The 2023 sixth overall pick got into the Utah lineup for the first time since December last night. The rookie has been exceptional in the minors but has just one assist with a -9 rating through his first 25 career NHL outings.
- The Blackhawks assigned defender Ethan Del Mastro to Rockford, per PuckPedia. He’ll be back up after being recalled earlier in the week to replace Connor Murphy on the roster after he was dealt to the Oilers.
- The Penguins have sent down winger Avery Hayes to make him post-season eligible, per Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. The 23-year-old rookie has two goals through his first six NHL contests over the past several weeks, both of which came in his debut.
- The Avalanche have demoted winger Gavin Brindley to the AHL’s Colorado Eagles. Brindley is in his first full NHL season after being acquired from the Columbus Blue Jackets last year, scoring six goals and 12 points in 47 games, averaging 9:51 of ice time per game.
- The Rangers are making sure that AHL Hartford has reinforcements for the playoffs. New York has reassigned forwards Jaroslav Chmelar and Juuso Pärssinen. The former scored the first goal of his NHL career in a lopsided victory over the Toronto Maple Leafs.
- According to a team announcement, the Vancouver Canucks have reassigned netminder Nikita Tolopilo and defenseman Cole Clayton to AHL Abbotsford. Tolopilo has been a mainstay between the pipes for Vancouver over the last little while, managing a 3-5-2 record in nine starts this season with a .901 SV% and 3.27 GAA.
- Unlikely to make the playoffs this season, the Panthers are making sure the cupboards are stocked for the Charlotte Checkers’ playoff run. The Panthers have reassigned Tobias Björnfot and Sandis Vilmanis, allowing them to remain eligible for the postseason.
- The Kraken have reassigned forwards Jacob Melanson and Ryan Winterton to the AHL’s Coachella Valley Firebirds. The pair have combined for four goals and 19 points in 82 games for Seattle this season.
- According to Bill Hoppe of the Times Herald, the Buffalo Sabres have assigned Zach Metsa to the AHL’s Rochester Americans in a paper transaction. Metsa, 27, is in his first full NHL season, scoring two goals and four points in 31 games, averaging 9:45 of ice time per game.
- The best team in the AHL may be even better during the playoffs. To maintain their eligibility for the postseason, the Grand Rapids Griffins announced that captain Dominik Shine and defenseman Axel Sandin Pellikka have been reassigned in a paper transaction.
- According to Charlie O’Connor of PHLY Sports, the Flyers have reassigned Denver Barkey and Adam Ginning to AHL Lehigh Valley. Barkey has been an encouraging story of late, scoring two goals and 10 points in his first 26 games of NHL action.
- Murat Ates of The Athletic confirmed that the Winnipeg Jets reassigned defenseman Elias Salomonsson to retain his postseason eligibility. Salomonsson has been relatively disappointing for AHL Manitoba this season, registering one goal and nine points in 29 contests.
- Pushing back on the earlier report today indicating that the Canucks had recalled Ty Mueller, Brendan Batchelor of Sportsnet shared that he won’t be joining the Canucks. Vancouver will run with a bare-bones roster tonight against the Blackhawks.
- Missing the playoffs for the first time in a decade, the Maple Leafs are making sure AHL Toronto has additional firepower for their postseason run. According to Lance Hornby of the Toronto Sun, the Maple Leafs have reassigned Easton Cowan and Jacob Quillan in a paper transaction. Despite being a higher-regarded prospect, Cowan only has two games of AHL experience.
- As expected, the Edmonton Oilers have reassigned forward Josh Samanski to the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors to ensure his postseason eligibility. Samanski has been exceptional for AHL Bakersfield this year, registering eight goals and 31 points in 43 games with a +6 rating.

Kraken Sign Ryan Winterton To Two-Year Extension
It has been an eventful evening for the Seattle Kraken, announcing that Ryan Winterton has been signed to a two-year contract extension worth $1.125MM per season. The forward would have become a restricted free agent after the season, now with a nice increase from his current $828k entry level deal. Winterton’s contract news came out tonight along with teammate Ben Meyers‘ extension.
A third round selection of Seattle in their inaugural 2021 draft class, Winterton has emerged as a nice find with a strong bottom six potential. Standing at 6’2″, the 22-year-old recorded at least 35 points in each of his two AHL seasons, now breaking through as a regular in the lineup. Across 54 games so far, the Ontario native has 15 points, missing just two contests to this point.
Back in August, Winterton was listed as the Kraken’s ninth-best prospect by Steven Ellis of The Fourth Period. A franchise whose efforts to build a contender immediately proved ineffective, with shuffling behind the bench, Seattle has finally started to assemble a formidable next wave of young players; Winterton helping round out the group with a high floor outlook.
Winterton’s development is still a work in progress, as his possession metrics at even strength remain below average, but he’s shown real improvement from last season’s -11 in just 12 games, now into the positives across his 54 games. Serving as a penalty killer in the team’s bottom six, he offers enough speed and puck skills to carve out a role under Head Coach Lane Lambert.
Now locked up until after the 2027-28 season, where he’ll still remain under team control, Winterton is expected to grow further over the next two seasons on his way to becoming a fixture of Seattle’s lineup.
Minor Transactions: 4/13/25
As is often the case at this time of year, there has been an influx of minor roster moves. Teams are shutting players down for the season or trying to give someone a game off with the playoffs approaching, leading to a busier shuffle between the NHL and AHL than usual. Here’s a rundown of today’s moves:
- The Maple Leafs announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled defenseman Dakota Mermis from AHL Toronto on an emergency basis. On Saturday, the Maple Leafs played short one defenseman, qualifying them for a cap-free emergency recall. It’s the second promotion for Mermis since he rejoined Toronto following his waiver claim from Utah back in February. Mermis has played in 32 games for the Marlies this season, notching seven assists.
- The Jets announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled center Dominic Toninato from AHL Manitoba. He’s taking the place of Nikolaj Ehlers on the roster after he exited Saturday’s game following a collision with a linesman. Toninato has been held off the scoresheet in four games with Winnipeg while adding 18 goals and 18 assists in 60 appearances with the Moose.
- The Kraken have returned forward Ryan Winterton to AHL Coachella Valley, per a team announcement (Twitter link). The 21-year-old picked up an assist in a dozen games with Seattle and will now return to the Firebirds to get ready for their playoff run. Winterton has 18 goals and 19 assists in 55 AHL contests this season.
- After making his season debut yesterday, Wild defenseman Cameron Crotty is heading back to the minors, per a team announcement (Twitter link). He’ll be ceding his roster spot to Zeev Buium who inked his entry-level deal earlier today. Crotty now has two career NHL appearances under his belt while he has chipped in with 10 assists in 62 outings with Iowa.
- The Islanders have sent goaltender Tristan Lennox back to AHL Bridgeport, relays Newsday’s Andrew Gross (Twitter link). The 22-year-old had a short-lived NHL debut back on Tuesday, allowing one goal on two shots in a little under five minutes of action. Lennox has been limited to just four minor league appearances this season due to injury, posting a 4.44 GAA and a .832 SV% with Bridgeport. He was no longer needed with the Isles with Ilya Sorokin returning today.
- One player who won’t be on the NHL-AHL shuffle for a little while longer is Calgary prospect Henry Mews. The defenseman announced (Twitter link) that he’ll play for the University of Michigan next season. Mews was a third-round pick by the Flames last June, going 74th overall. He had a strong year offensively in the OHL, tallying 82 points in 68 games between Ottawa and Sudbury but instead of staying in junior, he’ll test himself at the college level next season.
Seattle Kraken Recall Victor Ostman, Ryan Winterton
The Seattle Kraken will have a few additional players on their bench for their matchup against the Utah Hockey Club tonight. Seattle announced they’ve recalled goaltender Victor Ostman from their AHL affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, on an emergency basis. A few moments later, the Kraken also shared they’ve recalled Ryan Winterton on a standard recall.
Ostman’s recall suggests that either Joey Daccord or Philipp Grubauer won’t be available for Seattle tonight, but there haven’t been any updates regarding their availability. The Swedish netminder is likely considered the Kraken’s fourth-string goaltender and has yet to debut in the NHL.
Still, the 2024-25 campaign is his first playing in the professional ranks. He signed with Seattle as a collegiate free agent out of the University of Maine after managing a 35-38-7 record in 86 NCAA contests with a .905 SV% and 2.82 GAA. This season, he’s primarily played for the Kraken’s ECHL affiliate, the Kansas City Mavericks, posting a 21-7-4 record with a .903 SV%, 2.52 GAA, and two shutouts in 32 contests.
Meanwhile, Winterton earns his fifth call-up of the season with this transaction. Seattle selected Winterton with the 67th overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft, and he debuted with the club last year. This season, the Markham, Ontario native has scored 18 goals and 37 points in 55 games for AHL Coachella Valley with a +11 rating. Unfortunately, it hasn’t gone great in the NHL with Seattle, as he’s only mustered one assist while carrying a -7 rating in nine contests.
Kraken Reassign Ryan Winterton
4/3: The Kraken have reassigned Winterton to the minor leagues after he started in the team’s Wednesday night win over Vancouver. He recorded 12:22 in ice time and no scoring in the shutout victory.
4/2: The Kraken announced late last night that they’d recalled right-winter Ryan Winterton from AHL Coachella Valley under emergency conditions. While it’s unclear who, it looks like they have a couple of question marks up front as they kick off a road trip that will take them up to their final two games of the season.
If he’s needed tonight against the Canucks, he’ll be making his first NHL appearance since Dec. 17. A 2021 third-round pick, Winterton has logged 17 showings for the Kraken over the past two years. The 21-year-old has only one assist to his name and a minus-eight rating. He averaged 9:49 per game and has poor possession numbers, controlling 44.5% of shot attempts and 45.9% of expected goals at even strength despite starting 55.7% of his shifts in the offensive zone.
The 6’2″ winger has looked good in the minors, though. Through two professional seasons with the Firebirds, he’s posted 39-31–70 in 111 games with a +34 rating, working out to 0.63 points per game. His offensive pace has jumped slightly this season, recording 35 points in 53 games after hitting that mark in 58 appearances in 2023-24. He ranks fifth on Coachella Valley in scoring.
Winterton is the No. 7 prospect in the Kraken’s system, per Scott Wheeler of The Athletic, likely topping out as a defensively responsible third-line winger with some scoring upside. He’s got another year left on his entry-level contract with a cap hit of $828,333 and will be a restricted free agent in 2026.
Minor Transactions: 12/18/24
With the holiday roster freeze coming up shortly, there has been an uptick in smaller moves around the NHL today, not to mention a trade of note. Here’s a rundown of those transactions plus an NHL-drafted prospect on the move at the junior level.
- The Kraken announced (Twitter link) that they have re-assigned winger Ryan Winterton to AHL Coachella Valley. The 21-year-old has found himself on the transactions log quite a few times already this season but has gotten into eight games with Seattle, picking up an assist while logging 10:22 per night of playing time. Winterton has been quite productive with the Firebirds though, tallying 15 points in 16 outings with them.
- The Hurricanes have returned winger Jackson Blake, goaltender Dustin Tokarski, and defenseman Riley Stillman to AHL Chicago, per the AHL’s transactions log. Carolina has made these moves all season long to bank a bit of cap space. Even with the roster freeze, emergency recalls are still permitted for a few more days so expect them to continue this for even after Thursday.
- Capitals prospect Cam Allen is on the move in the OHL. London announced that they’ve acquired the blueliner from Guelph in exchange for defenseman Noah Jenken and seven draft picks. Allen was once rated as a first-round pick but slid in his draft year (2023) to the fifth round, going 136th overall. Washington has already signed the 19-year-old who had 25 points in 27 games prior to the swap.
Minor Transactions: 12/11/24
As has been the case throughout the season, there have been a bunch of minor moves around the NHL, primarily for roster management purposes. Here’s a rundown of those that haven’t already been covered.
- The Kraken announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled forward Ryan Winterton from AHL Coachella Valley. The 21-year-old has been shuffled back and forth multiple times in the early going this season. Winterton has played in six games with Seattle, picking up an assist while averaging 10:45 per game of ice time. With the Firebirds, Winterton has been quite productive, recording seven goals and eight assists in 16 games so far.
- The Canucks announced (Twitter link) that they’ve returned defenseman Mark Friedman to AHL Vancouver. The 28-year-old was recalled in late November but only got into one game while on recall. After clearing waivers in training camp, Friedman got into eight games with Abbotsford, notching a goal and three assists.
- The Avalanche continued their trend of near-daily transactions. Colorado assigned forward Ivan Ivan, defenseman Keaton Middleton, and goalie Trent Miner to the minors, per the AHL’s transactions log. Ivan has played exclusively with the Avs this season and has eight points in 30 games so it’s safe to say this is another paper move for salary cap reasons. The others aren’t as certain. Middleton has seen limited action in his three games and with the Avs having seven other healthy blueliners, they could opt to keep him down. Miner, meanwhile, was brought up with newcomer Mackenzie Blackwood being sick so his assignment could mean that Blackwood is ready to make his debut with Colorado in which case Miner would stay with the Eagles.
- After being named to Czechia’s preliminary World Junior roster yesterday, the Kings have loaned defenseman Jakub Dvorak to the national team, per the AHL’s transactions log. Considering that he’s seeing regular action with the Reign, it’s likely that he’s going to make the team so Los Angeles could have tried to see if they could keep him a little longer before loaning him out like Seattle intends to do with winger Eduard Sale but instead, Dvorak will join the Czechs for their full training camp.
Kraken Recall Ryan Winterton
The Seattle Kraken have recalled forward Ryan Winterton from Coachella Valley. It’s the second call-up of Winterton’s season, with the first awarding him one game – and a return to the AHL one day later. He didn’t record a point in his season debut, dragging Winterton through a 10th career game without his first point – after nine games last season. He currently leads the Coachella Valley Firebirds in goals and points, with seven goals and 15 points in 16 games.
Winterton has worked his way into a top-line role in Coachella Valley on the back of capable and quick play in the offensive end, stepping up as maybe the best playmaker and finisher on the Firebirds lineup. He’s showing noticeable improvements from his rookie AHL season last year, when he posted 22 goals and 35 points in 58 games.
Seattle captain Jordan Eberle is expected to miss the next three months after undergoing pelvis surgery earlier this week. His absence has cemented Tye Kartye and Daniel Sprong in the lineup, despite the pair scoring just four points in 22 games, and one point in six games, respectively. Meager production from his peers could open a chance for Winterton to work his way into minutes, and may even jump up the depth chart with a scoring spark.
Pacific Notes: Kraken, Walman, Turcotte, Janmark, Stonehouse
With another day off after losing to the Colorado Avalanche on November 5th, the Seattle Kraken have made a few transactions to shore up their cap space. The organization announced they reassigned Cale Fleury, John Hayden, and Ryan Winterton to their AHL affiliate, the Coachella Valley Firebirds, although all three are expected to return tomorrow.
Each of the trio has played in limited action at this point in the regular season as Fleury leads the pack with only two games played. Considering how close the Kraken are to the salary cap limit it’s likely not the last team these three will be papered down to the AHL this year.
On the injury front, Seattle won’t have Philipp Grubauer for the next few days with reports indicating he had an “unfortunate accident” at home (X Link). There weren’t specifics offered for Grubauer’s injury though it’s not expected to be long-term.
It’s not all bad news on the injury front for the Kraken as the team’s radio host Mike Benton shared that defenseman Vince Dunn is expected to begin skating soon. Dunn hasn’t played since October 17th after starting the year with one goal and three points in four games.
Other Pacific notes:
- Defenseman Jake Walman was surprisingly listed as a healthy scratch for the San Jose Sharks’ most recent game against the Columbus Blue Jackets. However, this may not have been the full story with Max Miller of The Hockey News reporting Walman won’t play tonight due to an upper-body injury. He’s been a bright spot on the Sharks’ roster this season with nine points in 13 games while averaging 22:42 of ice time per game.
- Los Angeles Kings’ manager of editorial content, Zach Dooley, reported earlier that forward Alex Turcotte will not play tonight due to an upper-body injury. Dooley noted that it’s not a head injury for Turcotte but he will still miss a second straight game. He’s only scored one goal and five points in 13 games this season but he has been one of the Kings’ most formidable players with a team-leading 3.6 E +/- according to Hockey Reference.
- In more injury news from the Pacific Division, Edmonton Oilers’ reporter Tony Brar shared that Mattias Janmark is considered day-to-day with an undisclosed injury. There won’t be a major shakeup in Edmonton’s roster in Janmark’s absence with the veteran forward averaging under 13 minutes a night on the season.
- Staying in Edmonton, the organization announced Brady Stonehouse had been activated from the season-opening injured reserve and loaned back to the OHL’s Ottawa 67’s. Stonehouse will begin his fourth season with the 67’s after signing his entry-level contract with the Oilers 13 months ago. In his first three years with OHL Ottawa Stonehouse has collected 75 goals and 136 points in 200 games.
