Colorado’s Jacob MacDonald Suspended Two Games

The NHL Department of Player Safety is not in the business of going easy on rookies. The league has announced a two-game suspension for Colorado Avalanche defenseman Jacob MacDonald for an illegal hit to the head. The incident in question took place during Wednesday night’s season series finale with the Minnesota Wild, with MacDonald targeting a defenseless Ryan Hartman in the first period. Player Safety described the hit as follows:

MacDonald delivered a high, forceful hit to [Hartman] that picked his head, making it the main point of contact on a hit where such contact was avoidable… MacDonald, arriving on the backcheck, delivers a high hit that cuts across the front of Hartman and picks his head. This is an illegal check to the head… While MacDonald does make some contact with Hartman’s chest, MacDonald’s shoulder hits through Hartman’s jaw and it is the head that absorbs the brunt of the impact… [Hartman] does not change the position of his head or body in any way that contributes to the head being the main point of contact. If MacDonald wants to deliver this check, he must take an angle of approach that hits through Hartman’s shoulder and core rather than one that cuts across the front of his body and makes the head the main point of contact.

The league notes that MacDonald does not have any history of fines or suspensions in his short NHL career (or in the AHL for that matter) but it didn’t stop them from sitting him for two games as discipline for a dangerous hit. The goal is likely to show a young player that actions have consequences, even when the on-ice officials missed the call. MacDonald was not assessed a penalty, when he likely should have received a game misconduct in the first period, so this likely contributed to his suspension being two games rather than just one, even as a first offense.

The 27-year-old has admirably worked his way from an undrafted prospect at Cornell University, through a number of years in the AHL and ECHL, to a regular role on the blue line this season for one of the league’s best teams. Colorado will have to survive without him for two games – fortunately against the lackluster Anaheim Ducks – but MacDonald has proven himself to be a reliable defenseman and should be back in the lineup as soon as he is eligible. His first bad decision as a pro should not impact MacDonald much as long as he keeps it clean moving forward.

Wild Expected To Sign Mats Zuccarello And Ryan Hartman

Monday: The Wild have officially announced the Zuccarello deal as a five-year, $30MM pact, as expected. Zuccarello was one of the earliest prominent free agents to commit to his new team, as he never appeared to waver on Minnesota’s offer.

The terms on Hartman’s deal come in almost exactly as Russo speculated. Colleague Pierre LeBrun reported it is a two-year deal worth $1.9MM, which the Wild have confirmed. Hartman ends up signing well above what it would have cost the Dallas Stars to keep him with a qualifying offer, though possibly less than they may have expected from an arbitration award.

Sunday: It appears Minnesota’s forward group is going to look a bit different next season.  Michael Russo of The Athletic reports (Twitter link) that the Wild will sign winger Mats Zuccarello to a five-year deal and Ryan Hartman to a two-year contract when free agency officially opens up on Monday.  Zuccarello’s cap hit is expected to be around $6MM while Hartman’s is believed to be just under $2MM.

Zuccarello was one of the top free agent wingers available on the market and has been pretty consistent over the past several years.  While injuries limited him to 48 games in 2018-19, he had averaged 56 points over the previous five seasons.  Though he was banged up, the 31-year-old still managed to pick up 40 points last season; his 0.83 point per game average was the best of his career.  He followed that up with a strong showing in the playoffs, recording 11 points in 13 contests.

Zuccarello is an interesting fit for the Wild.  After selling at the trade deadline, this is a pretty quick change of direction and a five-year term for someone that will be 32 by the start of training camp carries some risk.  However, he’ll give them a boost offensively and could represent a potential replacement if they eventually find a trade for winger Jason Zucker.  Zuccarello ranked ninth in our Top 50 UFA Rankings where we projected a five-year, $30MM deal to the Wild.

Meanwhile, Hartman has had an interesting week.  He was dealt from Philadelphia to Dallas in exchange for Tyler Pitlick but a day later, the Stars opted to not tender him a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent.  He hasn’t had a lot of stability lately as he was moved at the previous two trade deadlines.  Hartman went from Chicago to Nashville in 2018 and then was flipped to the Flyers as part of the Wayne Simmonds trade back in February.

Despite that, there’s still some upside with the 24-year-old.  While he may not be a top point producer, he can still serve as a capable energy winger and has scored at least 11 goals in each of his first three full NHL seasons.  Minnesota will likely slot him in on their third or fourth line and will be counting on similar production for the next two seasons.  As he was a late non-tender, he was not considered for our Top 50 UFA Rankings.

Perhaps one of the most interesting free agents out there seems to be Corey Perry. The veteran forward, recently bought out by the Anaheim Ducks has received interest from at least 10 teams, according to TSN’s Frank Seravalli. The 34-year-old winger is trying to narrow his choices to the best three to four today, but new teams keep jumping into the mix.

Sportsnet’s John Shannon reports that three or four teams are aggressively pursuing Perry as several teams are looking for a short-term option to help their team immediately. The Edmonton Oilers are considered one the four teams as they are trying to add as much help to the team’s top-six as possible, hoping that Perry might be able to help either Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl. Perry was limited to just 34 games last season, posting six goals and 10 points.

  • Ryan Dzingel’s name has heated up recently as Columbus Dispatch’s Brian Hedger reports that the scorer will not be returning to Columbus even with his Ohio ties. Reports that he clashed with head coach John Tortorella in his tenure with the Blue Jackets have made him look elsewhere. However, Sporting News Canada’s Murray Pam reports that two teams are vying for the 27 year old’s services, including the Chicago Blackhawks and the Colorado Avalanche. The Blackhawks could make the most sense for Dzingel as Chicago attempted to trade for him at the trade deadline, before he ended up with Columbus, and he also own a home in the Chicago area. Dzingel scored 26 goals and had 56 points between Ottawa and Columbus last season and could be a great second-line target for the right team.
  • With Anders Lee seemingly less and less likely to re-sign with the New York Islanders, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that he wouldn’t be surprised if the Montreal Canadiens go after the 28-year-old winger. Lee, who has tallied 68 goals over the past two seasons is looking for a long-term deal, which the Islanders have balked at so far. However, the Canadiens who are loaded with plenty of young forwards may be interested in adding a veteran leader who can help out both on the ice and in the locker room.
  • The Athletic’s Michael Russo (subscription required) reports that the Minnesota Wild are actively pursuing unrestricted free agent forward Mats Zuccarello and are prepared to offer him a long-term deal. The scribe adds that the Columbus Blue Jackets are also in the mix for the rights to the veteran forward. The 31-year-old was traded to Dallas at the trade deadline this year and he performed well in the playoffs (four goals and 11 points in 13 games), but the two opted to part ways when contract negotiations fell apart. The Wild have approximately $17.4MM in cap room to spend this offseason, although they still have to sign several of their restricted free agents, including Kevin Fiala, Ryan Donato and Joel Eriksson Ek. Russo adds the team is also looking at forward Ryan Hartman.
  • Flames radio host Pat Steinberg reports that all signs point to the Calgary Flames signing goaltender Cam Talbot Monday, likely to a one-year deal. Calgary looks like they intend to part ways with veteran Mike Smith, which could give Talbot, who has been playing for the rival Oilers for the past four years, minus the last few months when he was traded to Philadelphia. Talbot struggled last season with a 3.40 GAA and a .892 save percentage in 35 games between the two teams.
  • Fox Sports Midwest’s Andy Strickland reports that there is mutual interest between the Buffalo Sabres and unrestricted free agent defenseman John Gilmour, who became a Group 6 free agent this offseason. After appearing in 28 games in the 2017-18 season, Gilmour appeared in just five games this season and didn’t look to be in the team’s plans with so many young blueliners passing him. Regardless, the 26-year-old fared well in the AHL, putting up 20 goals and 54 points in 70 games for the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Philadelphia Flyers Trade Ryan Hartman

The Philadelphia Flyers have decided to move on from Ryan Hartman just a few months after acquiring him. The young forward is on his way to the Dallas Stars in exchange for Tyler Pitlick. Hartman is a restricted free agent this offseason, and was part of the deal that saw Wayne Simmonds head to the Nashville Predators at the trade deadline.

Hartman, 24, has now been part of four NHL organizations since being selected 30th overall in 2013. Reaching a career-high 19 goals and 31 points with the Chicago Blackhawks in 2016-17, he hasn’t been able to replicate that kind of production in Nashville or Philadelphia. In fact, Hartman recorded just 26 points total in his most recent season and didn’t find a great fit offensively with the Flyers. Still, his physical style still brings some potential to slide into the Stars’ top-nine and provide something that the team covets.

The fact that he is a restricted free agent shouldn’t be too much of an obstacle, but does likely mean that the Stars are taking on some salary in the deal. Pitlick was in the final season of a three-year deal that carries a $1MM cap hit, making him an affordable depth forward for the Flyers. Pitlick played 47 games for the Stars last season, recording 12 points but still providing a physical edge. The 27-year old has never been much of an offensive threat, recording a career-high 27 points in 2017-18.

While Hartman hasn’t lived up to his potential so far, this is quite a drop in value over the last few years. The Predators originally acquired him from the Blackhawks in 2018 in exchange for a package including Victor Ejdsell and a first-round pick, while he then landed them coveted deadline acquisition Simmonds a year later. While Pitlick will surely play for the Flyers, he doesn’t represent the kind of upside many believed Hartman to have just a few seasons ago.

Nashville Predators Will Not Bring Back Wayne Simmonds

The Nashville Predators may have opened up some cap space earlier today when they moved out defenseman P.K. Subban and his $9MM contract over the next three years. However, even with that extra cap space, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that Nashville general manager David Poile said that the team will not be bringing back unrestricted free agent Wayne Simmonds this offseason. The Tennessean’s Paul Skrbina adds that Poile also said that the team has no intention of bringing back Zac Rinaldo or Cody McLeod either.

Poile also notes that the team is still interested in bringing back unrestricted free agent Brian Boyle.

Simmonds was one Nashville’s biggest trade-deadline acquisition as they traded winger Ryan Hartman and a 2020 fourth-round pick in order to get the 6-foot-2 power forward in hopes of adding more physicality and scoring to their middle-six lines. However, Simmonds struggled once he joined Nashville, scoring one goal and three points in 17 games and then going scoreless in two playoff games. The 30-year-old Simmonds was a big-time scorer while with the Philadelphia Flyers, potting more than 20 goals six times and even reaching 30 goals twice. However, he tallied a combined 17 goals last season and his 30 points is one of the fewest of his career.

The 29-year-old Rinaldo spent most of the season with Nashville, but spent much of that time in the press box, playing a total of 23 games with one goal, three points and 20 penalty minutes. The 34-year-old McLeod came over in a deadline deal as well, this one with the New York Rangers. He played seven games for Nashville and didn’t register a point. Boyle, on the other hand, scored five goals in 26 games after being picked up for a second-round pick at the trade deadline. He also added two assists in three playoff games.

 

 

Flyers And Ryan Hartman Have Had Preliminary Contract Talks

After a strong rookie season in 2016-17, Ryan Hartman looked like a potential fixture in Chicago’s lineup for years to come.  However, he has bounced around since then and has been dealt in consecutive trade deadlines, shifting from Nashville to Philadelphia last month.

Although his output has dipped this season, the 24-year-old indicated to John Dietz of the Chicago Daily Herald that he’s hopeful to settle down with the team, suggesting that he’d like to sign a long-term deal this summer.  Hartman noted that he and his agent have already held preliminary talks regarding a new contract with GM Chuck Fletcher.

However, considering the drop-off offensively – something that hasn’t changed since joining the Flyers as he has just five points in 14 games – it’s hard to imagine that a long-term pact is something that Philadelphia would like to do at this time.  While they’re projected to have plenty of cap space this summer with less than $49MM in contracts already, it’s likely that they’ll be looking to be active on the free agent and trade market to add impact players.  Locking up a bottom-six piece like Hartman on a long-term deal that buys out some UFA years would take away some of that financial flexibility so it wouldn’t be high on their priority list.

Instead, another one-year deal seems likely.  That would give both Hartman and the Flyers time to determine if he’s part of their long-term picture and if so, he’d still have two years of RFA eligibility remaining at that time.  He’s owed a qualifying offer of just under $920K this summer and can file for salary arbitration which should get him a decent raise on his current $875K salary.

2019 Trade Deadline Day Recap

The trade deadline for the 2018-19 season has come and gone, with teams all around the league loading up for a Stanley Cup run. This year saw a nearly unprecedented level of skill available, though things got started quite early. Before deadline day, names like Matt Duchene, Brandon Montour, Mats Zuccarello, Charlie Coyle, Ryan Dzingel, Gustav Nyquist and Nick Jensen all switched teams. However, the day was no disappointment; a slow pace early on ended in fireworks right before the deadline and as deal trickled in right after. The Department of Player Safety announced they have fined Nashville Predators forward Ryan Hartman $1,000 for spearing Boston Bruins’ Chris Wagner Saturday with less than a minute left in the second period.

Hartman has been in trouble with the Department of Safety before as he was suspended for one game on Apr. 19 for an illegal check to the head against Colorado’s Carl Soderberg and then was fined for $2,320 for slashing Brayden McNabb in Oct. of 2017 against Vegas.

  • The Chicago Blackhawks may get a better idea today of where starting goaltender Corey Crawford is at after he sustained another concussion on Dec. 16. According to NBC Sports’ Charlie Roumeloitis, head coach Jeremy Colliton confirmed this morning that Crawford was in the building, but still hadn’t talked to the coach. “As far as I know he’s still in the protocol. He is here, so that’s a positive,” Colliton said. Crawford missed quite a bit of time when he suffered a concussion last year in December as he still wasn’t ready to return at the start of this season. The team hopes Crawford can return much earlier this time.
  • John Dietz of the Daily Herald reports that defenseman Brandon Davidson says that he should be ready to return to the Blackhawks lineup in 7-10 days. The blueliner underwent surgery on Nov. 27 on his right knee and was expected to be out for six to eight weeks, which suggests he could be ready at the six-week mark. The 27-year-old has only appeared in seven games for Chicago this year.
  • The Dallas Stars may have lost one of their own Saturday when forward Jason Dickinson was forced out of the second period of Dallas’ game against Minnesota with an upper-body injury, according to NHL.com’s Mark Stepneski. Head coach Jim Montgomery said that Dickinson was doubtful for their game today against the Islanders. The 23-year-old has been a mainstay for Dallas on the bottom-six as he has five goals and 11 points in 34 games.

Very little has gone right with the Chicago Blackhawks in their first 20 games this season. They have changed coaches after Joel Quenneville lost five straight and little has gone right since then as new head coach Jeremy Colliton has gone 1-2-2 since then. Regardless, Scott Powers of The Athletic (subscription required) breaks down the play of every player through the first 20 games.

Perhaps the most expected criticism comes to Nick Schmaltz, who many people had pegged as having a breakout season this year. Unfortunately, that hasn’t happened as he has just two goals and eight points so far this year. Yet Powers notes that while many criticize his play for a lack of shooting, Schmaltz has actually increased that to 5.17 shots on goal per 60 minutes — the highest in his career. Quenneville moved him to wing in hopes of sparking that offense, which Colliton has maintained, yet the team is still waiting for an increase in production.

“I think he can be more active away from the puck,” Colliton said. “He can be a little more engaged in 50/50s at times. But he’s showing flashes of that. I thought his third period after we moved him to Arty’s line there he was really good. I think look back to the Carolina game in their rink he was maybe our best player. That’s what we want out of him more consistently. We got to see if he can play center because I think he could really add a lot to our team. When that happens, I don’t know. There’s a lot of upside there, no question.”

  • Nashville Predators forward Kevin Fiala found himself getting very little ice time between the second and third periods Saturday against Los Angeles, getting only three shifts as Ryan Hartman took his place in 5×5 play, while he lost his power play role to Calle Jarnkrok. However, when asked about why Fiala lost playing time, head coach Peter Laviolette said it was just a coincidence, according to The Athletic’s Adam Vingan. “Sometimes it’s just the way the game is going inside of the lines and the numbers,” said Laviolette. “We made a move and put Ryan Hartman up there, and all of the sudden they had a good shift. We went into the game with the thought of Calle and Kevin splitting power-play time. Kevin got the first one, and Calle ended up getting the second one and looked good on it. We just stuck with it. It seemed to be working, so we made the switches.”
  • Mike Russo of The Athletic (subscription required) writes that the Minnesota Wild might be better off without veteran Matt Hendricks who has gotten into two straight games for the Wild. However, the scribe points out that the team plays better when Hendricks is out of the lineup as the team’s fourth line of Marcus Foligno, Eric Fehr and J.T. Brown have been fantastic together. Minnesota is 10-2 when Hendricks is not in the lineup, compared to 2-4-2 with him. Coincidentally, Russo reports that Hendricks will be a healthy scratch today.

Josh Archibald Suspended Two Games For Illegal Check

The Department of Player Safety has suspended Arizona Coyotes forward Josh Archibald two games for his illegal check to the head of Ryan Hartman. Archibald attempted to check Hartman into the boards and directly made contact with his head, resulting in a two-minute penalty. As the accompanying video explains:

It is important to note that although Hartman is making a play with the puck as Archibald approaches, he does not change the position of his head or body in a way that significantly contributes to the head being the main point of contact on this hit. If Archibald wishes to deliver this hit, he must take an angle of approach that hits through Hartman’s core, rather than picking the head and making it the main point of contact.

Archibald has no prior history with the DoPS, in fact he doesn’t have much of a history with the NHL at all. The 26-year old winger has just 62 games in the league over his career, 39 of those coming last season with the Coyotes. That fact didn’t keep him from punishment, given Hartman’s injury on the play and the clear head contact. He’ll now be watched much more closely by the league for any future incidents, though he certainly doesn’t have a reputation for play like this.

The Coyotes meanwhile will have to insert another player into the lineup, but that might not be the worst thing. Archibald has zero points in nine games and hasn’t shown much offensive ability since he left the University of Nebraska-Omaha. Arizona has much bigger things to deal with as Jason Demers, Jakob Chychrun and Alex Goligoski all find themselves sidelined due to injury.
