John Gibson Leaves Game With Upper Body Injury

October 30, 2023 at 8:03 pm CDT | by Josh Cybulski 2 Comments

Eric Stephens of The Athletic is reporting that Anaheim Ducks goaltender John Gibson left tonight’s game against the Pittsburgh Penguins and will not return. The 30-year-old netminder did not come out to the ice for the start of the second period after suffering what the team called an upper-body injury.

Gibson appeared to tweak either his back or something on his side when he made an unbelievable save on Sidney Crosby that could be a save-of-the-year candidate. Unfortunately for the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native, the save might have come at a cost as he was in some discomfort after getting twisted around making the blind stick save.

Lukas Dostal came out to start the second period for the Ducks in Gibson’s absence. The 23-year-old netminder has been good thus far for Anaheim posting a 3-1 record with a .915 save percentage in four games thus far this season. It’s early in the year, but Dostal has been the better of the two goalies in the early stages as Gibson is 1-3 with a .905 save percentage.

Gibson was once thought to be among the upper echelon of goaltenders in the NHL, however, over the last five seasons his play has dropped off dramatically as he has found his name in trade rumor mills on a pretty regular basis. Last season, Gibson went 14-31-8 with a .899 save percentage and 3.99 goals against average.

The Ducks were picked by many to be at the bottom of the standings at the end of the season, however, they have surprised some people with a 4-4 start to the season.

Anaheim Ducks Extend Lukas Dostal

July 16, 2023 at 1:03 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Anaheim Ducks got an essential bit of business done today, locking in their presumed backup netminder (and potentially soon-to-be-starter) to a contract for the next two years. 23-year-old Lukas Dostal has signed a deal carrying a two-way structure in 2023-24 and a one-way structure in 2024-25. Per The Athletic’s Eric Stephens, Dostal will earn $775K in the NHL and $325K in the AHL in the first year while earning $850K in the NHL in the second year. The deal carries a cap hit of $812.5K.

Anaheim’s third-round pick in 2018, Dostal has rocketed up goalie prospect ranking boards in recent years thanks to some dominant performances in the minors and pro leagues overseas. The Czech-born netminder has quite the career resume already, winning the Urpo Ylonen Award for the best goalie in the Finnish Liiga in 2019-20 after he posted a 1.78 goals-against average, .928 save percentage, three shutouts, and a 27-8-6 record in 43 games with Ilves while on loan from the Ducks.

He’s since posted a .915 save percentage in 98 games with the AHL’s San Diego Gulls over the past three seasons since coming to North America, good numbers for a young netminder behind a team that failed to finish above the .500 mark in two out of the last three years. He got an extended NHL look last season after injuries took down John Gibson and Anthony Stolarz, recording a .901 save percentage in 19 games behind one of the weakest defensive teams in recent memory.

With Stolarz departing the organization for the Florida Panthers in free agency, the path is clear for Dostal to remain in the NHL full-time next season, and they’ll have him there at an affordable cap hit. Dostal will be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights in 2025.

Ducks Recall Lukas Dostal

February 11, 2023 at 3:51 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

The Ducks have decided to swap out their backup goaltenders, announcing that they’ve recalled Lukas Dostal from San Diego of the AHL.  In a corresponding move, Olle Eriksson Ek was returned to the Gulls.

Dostal got into seven games with Anaheim on his first recall earlier this season, posting a 3.53 GAA along with a team-high .909 SV%.  The 22-year-old has spent the bulk of the year in the minors, playing in 34 contests with San Diego where he has a 2.97 GAA with a .912 SV%, earning himself an appearance at the AHL All-Star game which was earlier this week.

As for Eriksson Ek, he backed up John Gibson last night with Anthony Stolarz dealing with a lower-body injury that has him listed as day-to-day.  The 23-year-old has yet to make an NHL appearance and has struggled considerably in the minors this season with a 4.79 GAA and a .851 SV% in 13 games, numbers that are significantly worse than his first three seasons in North America.
