Evening Notes: Brazeau, Chabot, Tkachuk, Trenin

Boston Bruins rookie forward Justin Brazeau will be out week-to-week after suffering an apparently upper-body injury. Not many details are available yet, but Brazeau flew back to Boston yesterday to meet with doctors and more information will be available in the coming days regarding the severity and the timeline of the injury.

Brazeau was hurt in the first period of the Bruins game on Tuesday night against the Nashville Predators and did not return. He was stood up by Luke Schenn on the play and appeared to be favoring his arm or his shoulder while he received attention from the Bruins staff on the bench. In 19 games this season the 26-year-old rookie has five goals and two assists and has played predominantly in Boston’s bottom six.

In other evening notes:

  • Ottawa Sun reporter Bruce Garrioch tweeted that he expects Ottawa Senators defenseman Thomas Chabot to return to the lineup this weekend. The 27-year-old has battled injuries throughout the season with the most recent ailment keeping him out of the lineup since March 27th. Chabot’s absence was caused by a lower-body injury that was called a nagging injury by Senators staff. Chabot has dressed in just 44 games this season for Ottawa and has posted good offensive numbers with eight goals and 20 assists.
  • Matthew Tkachuk was back in the Florida Panthers lineup tonight as they routed the Senators 6-0. Tkachuk had a goal and two assists in 12:56 of ice time. Tkachuk didn’t dress for the Panthers on Tuesday in Montreal as he battled an illness but showed no ill effects of it tonight in Ottawa. With his three points this evening, Tkachuk now has 24 goals and 59 assists on the season in 75 games and is unlikely to eclipse the 100-point plateau for the third consecutive season.
  • Corey Masisak of The Denver Post tweeted that Colorado Avalanche center Yakov Trenin did not dress tonight for the game against the Minnesota Wild due to an undisclosed injury. Trenin was acquired at the trade deadline from the Predators and has dressed in 10 games with the Avalanche posting two goals. Colorado’s head coach Jared Bednar did tell reporters that Trenin could play tomorrow night when the Avalanche head to Edmonton to take on the Oilers.

East Notes: Tarasenko, Tomek, Bruins

With the Senators being nowhere close to a playoff spot, pending UFA winger Vladimir Tarasenko sits atop their list of trade chips.  However, Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch notes that there is some talk that the 32-year-old might prefer to finish the year in Ottawa.  Tarasenko can control his fate as he has a full no-move clause.  Sticking with them might allow Tarasenko to play a bit higher in the lineup which certainly doesn’t hurt from a negotiating perspective but at the same time, the potential to go deep in the playoffs and contribute could also help his case for securing a multi-year deal on the open market, something he wasn’t able to do last July, instead settling for a one-year, $5MM pact.

Elsewhere in the Eastern Conference:

  • Flyers goalie prospect Matej Tomek has signed a one-year extension with Litvinov of the Czech Extraliga, per a team release. The 26-year-old was a third-round pick (90th overall) back in 2015 but struggled in limited college action, resulting in him heading back overseas in 2019.  Since then, Tomek has spent time in both Slovakia and Czechia.  This season, he has a 3.00 GAA and a .911 SV% in 31 games with Litvinov.  The Flyers hold his rights indefinitely so this extension won’t have any impact on that front.
  • A day after recalling defenseman Ian Mitchell and assigning Justin Brazeau to the minors, the Bruins reversed those moves, per the AHL’s transactions log. Brazeau scored in his NHL debut back on Monday after his AHL deal was converted to a two-year NHL pact.  Mitchell, meanwhile, has been shuffled back and forth several times this season.  He has two assists in 13 NHL games so far while adding 14 points in 22 games with Providence.

Bruins Sign Justin Brazeau

It has been a successful season in the minors for winger Justin Brazeau and he has been rewarded for his efforts.  BNG Productions’ Mark Allred was first to report (Twitter link) that the Bruins have converted his AHL contract to an NHL one; CapFriendly adds (Twitter link) that it’s a two-year deal which breaks down as follows:

2023-24: $775K NHL salary, $135K AHL salary
2024-25: $775K NHL salary, $165K AHL salary, $190K guaranteed salary

The 26-year-old finished up his major junior career with a bang, scoring 61 goals in 68 games with North Bay.  That helped him earn a two-year AHL deal with Toronto at the time but he played in only 22 games for the Marlies over that stretch.  He then signed a minor league deal with Boston in 2021 and his fortunes have certainly changed since then.

Brazeau scored 15 goals in his first season with Providence and followed that up with 16 tallies last season in 67 games.  This season, the 6’5 winger has already surpassed that mark, notching 18 goals along with 19 helpers in 48 appearances, good for fourth on the team in scoring.  It appears that will be enough to get him his first NHL opportunity which could come as soon as Monday against Dallas as it appears he’ll take the place of Oskar Steen on the roster who was waived earlier today.

Brazeau is not subject to any entry-level rules and thus will only be waiver-exempt for the remainder of this season.  Starting in 2024-25, he’ll have to clear waivers if Boston wants to return him to Providence.  The Bruins now have 48 contracts on the books out of the maximum of 50.

Minor Transactions: 6/7/23

The transitional period between the postseason and the offseason continues, with the latter starting to heat up after a significant three-team deal yesterday. With the AHL’s playoffs all but wrapped up as well, transaction news will now flood in from both sides of the Atlantic Ocean as non-NHL leagues continue in their busiest signing periods of the year. As always, we’re keeping tabs on any and all notable transactions from outside the NHL right here.

  • 24-year-old defender Markus Phillips will spend next year in Hungary, signing with Fehérvár AV19 of the primarily Austrian ICEHL. Phillips, a former Los Angeles Kings (and briefly Winnipeg Jets) prospect, never did make it to the NHL after a promising draft year in 2016-17, when his 43 points and +41 rating in 63 OHL games earned him the 118th overall selection in that year’s draft. Since then, he struggled to find his footing professionally in the AHL and ECHL and spent the 2022-23 overseas with Finnish club Ässät.
  • The AHL’s Providence Bruins today signed forward Justin Brazeau to a one-year contract extension, per Mark Divver of the New England Hockey Journal. The massive 6-foot-5, 220-pound winger has developed into a top-flight AHL winger in the past two seasons with Toronto and Providence and recorded a career-high 45 points in 67 games last season. The former captain of the OHL’s North Bay Battalion will look to build on that total and hopefully earn an NHL deal as he enters his mid/late-20s.
