East Notes: Ho-Sang, Bogosian, Kuhlman

Josh Ho-Sang continues to wait for some sort of resolution to his situation as he continues to be away from the Islanders AHL affiliate in Bridgeport in the hopes of securing a trade.  While there has been no movement on this front over the past three weeks, TSN’s Darren Dreger notes (Twitter link) that GM Lou Lamoriello is still working to find him a new home.  In the meantime, the 2014 first-rounder continues to skate on his own to try to stay in game shape.  Ho-Sang was a productive scorer in junior but it has yet to translate to the professional level and he wound up clearing waivers at the end of training camp.  At this point, a swap of players that need a change of scenery – similar to the recent Chicago-Florida swap – seems like the eventual outcome although Ho-Sang may have to report to the minors to show the acquiring team that he’s in playing shape.

  • Sabres defenseman Zach Bogosian was initially expected to miss five-to-six months after undergoing hip surgery back in April but setbacks have delayed that as he has yet to resume practicing yet. However, GM Jason Botterill told reporters, including Bill Hoppe of the Olean Times Herald, that the veteran is expected to play at some point this season and noted that he has resumed skating.  Bogosian is presently on LTIR so Buffalo would need to get into salary cap compliance before they’re able to activate him.
  • Bruins winger Karson Kuhlman will miss at least a month due to a hairline nondisplaced fracture of his right tibia sustained over the weekend, the team announced. He will be re-evaluated at that time so in all likelihood, he’ll be out even longer.  The timeline means that Boston is eligible to place him on LTIR to give them a bit more recall flexibility with blueliner John Moore also presently on there.

Ottawa Senators Seeking Another Trade Addition

While the Ottawa Senators are fully committed to a rebuild, their recent actions would also indicate that they would like to be more competitive than they currently are. The Senators are off to a 1-6-1 start and, as TSN’s James Duthie noted on the network’s “Insider Trading” segment, the team is in the bottom two in the league in scoring, power play efficiency, and shooting percentage. They tried to remedy their offensive struggles by adding Vladislav Namestnikov in a trade with the New York Rangers earlier this month, but they may only be the beginning.

Duthie’s colleague, Darren Dreger, reports that the team is seeking more help via trade and are looking for another “bargain” acquisition. Ottawa acquired Namestnikov, a former 20-goal and near 50-point scorer for a mere fourth-round pick and AHL defenseman. Since the trade, he has led the Senators with six points in six games. The team would ideally like to find another impact player at a similarly affordable price. Namestnikov’s production in Ottawa is obviously a function of his increased role, but the team seems open to handing another player that ice time and responsibility as well. Dreger notes that the Senators understand that their young players need time to develop and are not going to rush them to the NHL level simply because the team is not expected to make the playoffs this season. The team is trying to find a happy medium between properly developing their prospects and fielding a competitive NHL roster and feel adding another capable name could help.

Nearly every team in the NHL has a player on the outs who could take advantage of an increased role in Ottawa. The question becomes whether GM Pierre Dorion will be looking solely for another impending unrestricted free agent, like Namestnikov, or if he will also consider players with term remaining on their contract. The team could also look into cast-off prospects with NHL experience to take on major roles, as the Edmonton Oilers’ Jesse Puljujarvi and the New York Islanders’ Josh Ho-Sang continue to be available names with upside that could make them affordable additions relative to their potential production.

Penguins Notes: Trade Market, Ho-Sang, Malkin

Over the weekend, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman relayed the sentiment from Pittsburgh Penguins GM Jim Rutherford that he is “not really that excited” about the names available on the trade market. It’s an echo of comments that the veteran executive made this summer about teams being unwilling to part with value or make a deal that he felt was a fair swap. The Penguins entered the season with a surplus of defensemen and a shortage of cap space, hoping to make a deal from their depth. That need to make a trade has only been exasperated by both injuries to the forward corps as well as the unexpected emergence of John Marino as an affordable NHL option on the blue line. Rutherford remains on the hunt for a trade, but thus far to no avail.

With that said, the equilibrium of the trade market shifted today with the announcement by the Arizona Coyotes that dependable defenseman Niklas Hjalmarsson would be missing three months with a broken leg. The timing could not have been better for the Penguins, as Seth Rorabaugh of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review notes that Arizona management was on hand in Winnipeg to watch the Jets host the Pens on Sunday ahead of their own match-up on Tuesday. The ‘Yotes are now another team that could be interested in acquiring a Penguins defenseman, particularly as they need to replace the solid defensive play of Hjalmarsson. Stay-at-home defenseman Erik Gudbranson, who was a healthy scratch for the Penguins last game, is one of the names available and would seemingly be a good fit in the desert. Arizona could also be interested in a cheaper addition like veteran Chad Ruhwedel or young Juuso Riikola. Of course, the player that most Penguins fans would like to be rid of is Jack Johnson – and the four years and $13MM remaining on his contract – but it remains a long shot that Pittsburgh will be able to trade Johnson without giving up another valuable piece of their own, whether they are dealing with Arizona or otherwise.

  • Another deviation from Rutherford’s comments comes in the form of a report that he has taken a liking to an available player. Dan Kingerski or Pittsburgh Hockey Now cites a league source that says the Penguins have talked to the New York Islanders about ostracized young forward Josh Ho-Sang. Ho-Sang has struggled to find a role with New York early in his pro career and after once again failing to make the team out of camp, he was instructed by GM Lou Lamoriello not to report to the AHL, but instead to wait for the team to find him a new home via trade. On one hand, the Islanders’ willingness to move Ho-Sang and the fact that he was already available on waivers this season means that the asking price is likely low. On the other hand, this means that Rutherford could solve his need for help up front, but would be unlikely to find a taker of one of his defensemen in the Islanders. Ho-Sang would be a good fit in Pittsburgh as a player with NHL experience and skill who can move back and forth between the AHL. However, it remains to be seen if Rutherford is willing to make a trade where one of his nine NHL defensemen aren’t headed the other way.
  • The timeline for Evgeni Malkin’s return from injury remains “uncertain”, according to Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston this weekend. Malkin was injured when he went down awkwardly after a hit earlier this month and the Penguins have not updated his status with any concrete timeline. Johnston expects that Malkin will be out at least a month, dating back to when the injury occurred, which means there is hope he could return in early November. This would be the best-case scenario however and Pittsburgh is unlikely to rush him back, even in light of the three other regular forwards currently shelved by injuries. Malkin was not himself at times last year and his 21 goals in 68 games was far from the expectation. The Penguins would likely rather he take his time with recovery and get back to full strength before the second half and hopeful playoff run.

New York Islanders Recall Oliver Wahlstrom

The 2-3-0 New York Islanders are in for an early-season shake-up. The team has announced that veteran forward Casey Cizikas has been placed on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. In his place, the team has opted to recall not a similar two-way forward, but instead top offensive prospect Oliver Wahlstrom. It is the first career NHL promotion for the 2018 No. 11 overall pick and could provide a needed spark for the Islanders.

Wahlstrom, 19, has been on an NHL trajectory since he was nine years old. A youth hockey phenom who developed elite stick skills at a young age, Wahlstrom was recruited by the University of Maine at 14 years old, before switching his commitment to Harvard University, and then finally Boston College, where he played last year. After recording 48 goals and 94 points with the U.S. National Development team in his draft year, Wahlstrom’s production at BC – eight goals and 19 points in 36 games – left something to be desired. There was a mutual agreement that it was in his best interest to jump to the pro level, where he has three goals and six points in nine career AHL games thus far. There is no doubting Wahlstrom’s ability on the ice; a dangerous scoring threat, he possesses a killer instinct around the net, matched by his skill at possessing the puck and create opportunities for his teammates.

With the right linemates, it would bot be a surprise to see Wahlstrom find immediate success with the Islanders. A strong player with a mature sense of the game, the rookie scorer should fit right in. There has been no indication yet as to where Wahlstrom will line up, but it won’t take long to find out, as the Islanders host the St. Louis Blues this afternoon. It’s safe to assume that he will draw in right away in hopes of providing a boost to the league’s fifth-worst scoring offense thus far. Wahlstrom has also been given Josh Ho-Sang’s No. 26, truly marking a changing of the guard in New York. The team plans on this No. 26 playing a bigger role for a longer time, that much is certain.

Snapshots: Pietrangelo, Ho-Sang, Marleau

Sportsnet’s “Saturday Headlines” segment was filled with interesting information this week, headlined by negotiations between the defending champion St. Louis Blues and No. 1 defenseman Alex Pietrangelo. The status quo has shifted dramatically over the last two weeks in terms of extension talks between the two sides, as the Blues first acquired Justin Faulk from the Carolina Hurricanes and handed him a seven-year, $45.5MM extension and then signed another impending free agent, Brayden Schenn, to an eight-year, $52MM extension. The team would obviously still like to re-sign their captain, but they have significantly more future salary committed now, as well as more security on the blue line in Faulk if Pietrangelo does leave. How that affects contract talks remains to be seen. Elliotte Friedman reports that GM Doug Armstrong plans to meet with Pietrangelo’s Toronto-based Newport Sports agents when the Blues visit the Maple Leafs this week to open up the conversation. Friedman adds that St. Louis’ preferred contract would be similar to that of Arizona Coyotes top defender Oliver Ekman-Larsson, who signed an eight-year, $66MM extension in 2018. Friedman implies that Pietrangelo would likely be able to beat an $8.25MM salary on the open market. However, a proportional contract to Ekman-Larsson’s based on either this year’s salary cap or next year’s projected salary cap would place that number between $8.5-8.75MM at least, which could be enough to keep Pietrangelo. The real question is whether the Blues can afford that, with nearly $74MM already committed to 17 players next season.

  • Joshua Ho-Sang isn’t opposed to playing in the AHL, just doing so any longer for the New York Islanders. At least that’s what Friedman reports that his camp is telling other NHL teams. Ho-Sang has requested a trade from the Islanders and the club is trying to oblige, giving him permission to talk to other teams. Ho-Sang is letting them know that he is willing to do “whatever it takes” to find a regular NHL role, even if that means starting the process in the AHL. This could potentially broaden the level of interest in the disgruntled winger, who may not have the best reputation but honestly seems in search of a fresh start.
  • Chris Johnston reports that Patrick Marleau remains “confident” that he will find a home in the NHL this season. The respected veteran had the final season of his contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs bought out following a trade to the Carolina Hurricanes this off-season, but so far hasn’t been able to find an ideal fit to continue playing. Much of the speculation had him returning to the San Jose Sharks, with whom he played much of his Hall of Fame career with, but the team was not as receptive to a comeback as expected. Marleau maintains that he would like to stay close to his family in San Jose, making Pacific Division rivals like the Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Ducks, Arizona Coyotes and Vegas Golden Knights the likely targets. However, given the Sharks’ 0-3 start and early scoring woes, perhaps the team will come calling after all. Marleau continues to work out and stay optimistic for whenever an opportunity does arise.

Josh Ho-Sang Requests Trade

The New York Islanders are looking for a trade partner for Joshua Ho-Sang after his representative requested one, GM Lou Lamoriello told reporters including Arthur Staple of The Athletic. Ho-Sang was told not to report for a few days after clearing waivers while the team tried to find a deal.

Though teams obviously had a chance at Ho-Sang when he was placed on waivers, the fact that he has now cleared actually increases his value. The young forward can now be assigned to the minor leagues for whichever team acquires him, though that still doesn’t guarantee a deal will be made. The 23-year old was the 28th overall pick in 2014 but has just 53 NHL games under his belt so far despite strong offensive numbers in the minor leagues.

Never much of a goal-scorer, Ho-Sang has excellent puck skills and playmaking ability, especially with the man-advantage. He has recorded 84 assists in 156 AHL regular season contests, and does have 24 points in his 53 NHL appearances. If the Islanders can find a new home for him, Ho-Sang will likely have to prove himself once again for their minor league affiliate before getting another opportunity at the highest level.

Islanders Re-Sign Michael Dal Colle, Josh Ho-Sang

The New York Islanders have done some damage to their list of unsigned restricted free agents today, inking two of the three in forwards Michael Dal Colle and Josh Ho-Sang. The announcement was expected after GM Lou Lamoriello mentioned last week that two unnamed RFA’s had come to terms on new contracts. It is a two-year deal for Dal Colle and a one-year deal for Ho-Sang, leaving only Anthony Beauvillier still in need of a new extension. CapFriendly reports that Dal Colle signed for the minimum $700K AAV, but on a one-way deal, while Ho-Sang signed his qualifying offer, a two-way pact worth $874K at the NHL level.

Dal Colle, 23, earns a multi-year deal despite the fact that he is still struggling to prove he is an NHL-caliber player. The 2014 fifth overall pick entered the pro ranks with enormous expectations but has fallen very short to this point. Dal Colle has just 32 NHL games to his credit, along with seven total points. In the AHL, his production has been good, but far from elite, although he was a point-per-game player in limited action this past season. Currently trending to be just a part-time depth player for the Islanders, it is far from what the team expected when he was drafted before the likes of William Nylander, Nikolaj Ehlers, and Dylan Larkin in the first round five years ago.

Ho-Sang, also 23, was drafted in that same first round, 23 picks after Dal Colle in 2014. Unlike Dal Colle, he had been a productive depth player for New York, recording back-to-back seasons of double-digit points in less than 25 games to begin his NHL career. However, he took a step back in 2018-19, spending most of the year in the AHL and recording just two points in ten NHL games. Ho-Sang’s role moving forward thus remains a mystery just like Dal Colle’s, though he has one less year to prove he’s worthy of a continued commitment.

Morning Notes: Islanders, Wild GM Search, Lovejoy

The Islanders still have three restricted free agents in wingers Anthony Beauvillier, Michael Dal Colle, and Joshua Ho-Sang.  However, GM Lou Lamoriello told Newsday’s Andrew Gross that the team has already reached an agreement with two of them but the contracts have yet to formally be signed and registered with the league.  He declined to indicate which two players had agreed.  Lamoriello also expressed his confidence in getting the third player signed without much difficulty so it appears they’ll have their full squad intact for training camp.

The GM also provided injury updates on a pair of veteran wingers.  Cal Clutterbuck (back surgery) has resumed skating and should be ready for the start of the season.  Meanwhile, Andrew Ladd (ACL surgery) has also started skating but will likely start the season on the Islanders injured reserve list.

Other early news and notes from around the league:

  • Bill Guerin isn’t the only Minnesota GM candidate to get a second interview thus far. Fox Sports Midwest’s Andy Strickland reports (Twitter link) that Montreal assistant GM Scott Mellanby has also had a second interview with the Wild.  Tom Kurvers, who is currently battling cancer, is currently serving as their interim GM but does not appear to be under consideration for the full-time role.
  • Stars team reporter Mike Heika noted via Twitter that it’s unlikely that defenseman Ben Lovejoy will return to the team. While he played a regular role for them down the stretch and in the postseason, the team believes that fellow blueliner Stephen Johns will be ready to go after missing all of last season due to a concussion.  His presence would basically fill the spot that Lovejoy would otherwise be able to potentially occupy.

Islanders Keep Dal Colle, Send Ho-Sang Back To AHL

The New York Islanders have made the decision on which of their young forwards to keep for the time being, changing Michael Dal Colle’s emergency recall to a regular one and assigning Joshua Ho-Sang back to the minor leagues.

Dal Colle, 22, is finally making good on the fifth-overall selection the Islanders spent on him in 2014. For two years the big winger struggled in the minor leagues, but this season seemed to turn a corner with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers before eventually finding his way to the NHL. Now with 22 games played for New York this season, it looks like he could be carving himself out a full-time role.

Though he has just five points in those 22 games, Dal Colle has been a positive possession player and has earned himself more ice time of late. Though he’s not going to supplant one of the Islanders’ top options at the moment, he’s setting himself up to be a real contributor in the future. Obviously you want more than just a warm body from such a high draft pick, but sometimes players just take longer to work out what makes them successful at the next level. Dal Colle is a restricted free agent this summer, which makes the next month or so very interesting from a contract negotiating standpoint.

Ho-Sang meanwhile continues to bounce up and down without any real consistency. The 23-year old forward is obviously a skilled player, as evidenced by his 103 points in 144 games at the minor league level, but can’t seem to find a role on the Islanders. Another first-round pick from 2014, Ho-Sang is also a restricted free agent this summer and has been considered a trade candidate in the past.

Trade Rumors: Ho-Sang, Simmonds, Bruins

While the trade deadline generally centers around the teams and the general managers making the big decisions, the players are usually well aware of what is going on and where they stand as well. New York Islanders prospect Josh Ho-Sang has been the odd man out this season and knows his time with the club could be be up. He spoke honestly with The Athletic’s Arthur Staple today, saying that he is open to being traded:

I don’t know what’s going to happen, I don’t know what they want to do with me. I’m not opposed to (being traded) if it helps the Islanders get better. For me, obviously I want to play in the NHL, that’s my main focus. For them, if they need to trade me for pieces to go further in the playoffs, improve the great team they have, then I’m all for it.

It’s a well-put statement by Ho-Sang, but one easily interpreted as being from a player ready for a change of scenery. The 2014 first-round pick has only played in ten games with the Islanders this season, after skating in 20+ in each of the past two years. Meanwhile, this has been his best AHL season, as he has scored at a near point-per-game clip through 39 games. Ho-Sang’s game can be streaky and frustrating at times, but his ability is undeniable. As the Islanders move toward adding a top rental ahead of the deadline, a seller will likely be interested in taking a waiver on Ho-Sang’s upside if his time in New York is truly over.

  • It’s been pretty quiet around Philadelphia Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds of late, but TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that “interest has intensified” over the last couple of days. LeBrun speculates that the Flyers’ recent streak of success may have quelled the Simmonds market as the team became re-focused on a playoff push, but he feels the results of their next few games will ultimately determine if and when Simmonds is dealt. More likely than not, the impending free agent power forward will be playing elsewhere by Monday.
  • Even after the Charlie Coyle acquisition, many believe that the Boston Bruins are not done. TSN’s Darren Dreger applauded the trade, but noted that the Bruins did not have to give up much and are likely still in the market for another scoring forward. The Bruins announced this evening that center Trent Frederic has been assigned to the AHL and winger Peter Cehlarik has been recalled, further enforcing the idea that Boston prefers to play Coyle at third-line center. That would still leave a hole on the second line next to David Krejci. Dreger names New York Rangers Mats Zuccarello and Kevin Hayes as among those the Bruins are targeting to further help out their secondary scoring.
