Los Angeles Kings Hire Rob Vollman As Senior Hockey Analyst

The Los Angeles Kings continue to try to improve as the franchise went out and hired long-time analyst Rob Vollman to be the team’s Senior Hockey Analyst, according to TSN’s Bob McKenzie. The analyst has been working in that field for more than 20 years, long before it became popular.

“Rob is a highly regarded pioneer in the analytics industry,” Kings vice president of hockey operations and legal affairs Jeff Solomon told The Athletic’s Lisa Dillman on Saturday. “He’s very creative and has a broad base of experience. I expect him to enhance our analytics platforms and to greatly contribute to Hockey Ops processes.”

Vollman, who has spent much of his life to hockey analytics, has written five books in his Hockey Abstract series and co-written a book, Stat Shots, in 2016. Over the years, Vollman had spent much of his time towards analytics whether it was through public speaking, his work on websites like Hockey Analytics as well as his books.

With more and more teams investing in analytics, the Kings hope by hiring Vollman, they can jump up near the top in the field. Several teams have been known to have significantly invested in analytics in the past few years, including the Carolina Hurricanes, Florida Panthers, Washington Capitals, New Jersey Devils and Toronto Maple Leafs.

Maple Leafs Will Not Name A Captain This Off-Season

The Toronto Maple Leafs did not have a captain last season and judging by the comments of new GM Kyle Dubas, they may not have one this season either. In an interview with TSN’s Bob McKenzie, Dubas stated for a fact that the team would not name a captain prior to the beginning of the season and would again go without one until Dubas, Brendan Shanahan, and the coaching staff can better evaluate their options.

I want to get into a day-to-day with these people and see who is best suited to handle [the captaincy]… if we do determine that we need somebody to handle that. If we feel we have a void in leadership because we don’t have a formal captain, then that is something that I think we can address… We need to evaluate it as the season evolves and as we go through the ups and downs of a season and see how the players each individually handle the daily process of a season.”

Dubas seems hesitant to make any sort of decision until he has a complete read of the locker room and until a time that he feels naming a captain is necessary. He calls the title for a historic club like the Maple Leafs “an honor” and wants to make sure that the correct person is named. Dubas feels that being patient with naming a captain will be the right move and eliminates the risk of any future drama surrounding the team’s leadership.

Dubas specifically mentions Patrick Marleau, Ron Hainsey, and free agency prize John Tavares as top candidates if and when a decision is made. The latter was the captain of the New York Islanders before signing in Toronto and some speculated that the commitment made by the team to Tavares could indicate that he would be in line for the same role. Meanwhile, Dubas singled out Marleau as a player who stepped up as a locker room leader for the team last year. While the team lost regular alternates in Tyler Bozak and Leo Komarov this off-season, Marleau, Hainsey, and Nazem Kadri also wore the “A” occasionally last season. As for the young core of the team, Dubas says that he hopes William Nylander, Morgan Rielly – a frequent alternate the past few years, Jake Gardiner, Auston Matthews, and Mitch Marner continue to grow in their leadership abilities, but stopped short of calling any of them a prime candidate at this point. With Nylander still unsigned and both Gardiner and Hainsey on expiring contracts, it would seem that either Marleau or Tavares would be the favorite for the role, with Rielly, Matthews, and Marner as possibilities. However, Dubas will not rush the decision and the Leafs may even go another whole season without a formal captain.

Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner Unlikely To Sign Extensions Before Season

While all eyes around the Toronto Maple Leafs right now are on William Nylander and his ongoing contract negotiations, there is also now the possibility of long-term extensions for Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner. Both star forwards have been eligible for an extension since July 1st, but haven’t been in the spotlight much after the team signed John Tavares in free agency and still has not reached an agreement with Nylander for the upcoming season. Now, while sitting down with Bob McKenzie of TSN, Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas admitted that those extensions may not get done before the season.

I wouldn’t say it’s all too likely. We’ve had good discussions with all of them, with both Mitch and Auston and their people. These are the types of things that because there’s no real immediacy to it—they both know they have another year on their contract, everyone’s excited for the season—it’s been a very patient process on all parts. That’s more from the team that it is from the players. We believe that if a player is going to commit that long to a team on a long-term agreement, that we want them to be fully comfortable and aware of what they’re getting into. 

Dubas went on to explain how his team would always be willing to negotiate in-season, but understands if the player doesn’t want that distraction as they’re trying to perform to the best of their abilities. That likely means that the two sides would have to come together next offseason and hammer something out, a tact that could end up costing the Maple Leafs even more.

There is little reason to believe that Matthews or Marner will take steps backwards this season given their individual talent and the expected improvement to the team. If they head into negotiations with new career highs, or even just a third season at the level they’ve been at their demands may increase. That said, both players would likely already be looking at huge contract extensions in any negotiations this summer, with players like Jack Eichel and Leon Draisaitl as potential comparables.

Dubas again seemed confident that all three of the Maple Leafs’ young stars will be with the club long-term, even going so far as to suggest the team try to keep them for their entire careers. While many have wondered how they’ll fit everyone in under the salary cap now that John Tavares is in town making $11MM per season, the young GM obviously has a plan in place. Nylander is the next step on that plan, and needs a contract in the next week or will be in danger of missing the start of training camp.

Calgary Flames Sign James Neal

The Calgary Flames worked through the night to secure another free agent asset, signing James Neal to a five-year deal. The average annual value of the contract will be around $5.75MM.

Neal was the highest ranked player left on our Top 50 UFA List after day one of free agency, and is the picture of offensive consistency in the salary cap era. Scoring at least 21 goals in each of his ten seasons, Neal was once again a positive possession player and an on-ice leader for the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017-18. Though he’s almost never been his team’s leading scorer, he quietly goes about his business at both even-strength and on the powerplay providing excellent secondary scoring and reliable two-way play. That’s huge for the Flames, who have rebuilt their roster over the last few weeks with the additions like Neal, Derek Ryan, Noah Hanifin and Elias Lindholm.

The Flames enter 2018-19 with a new head coach behind the bench in Bill Peters, and several new faces up front. Where Neal fits into the group isn’t clear, but he’ll be another option for the middle-six, or potentially even spend time on the top line if Lindholm doesn’t fit as well as expected with Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan. It will be interesting to see what this means for Troy Brouwer, who still has two years at $4.5MM on his contract but is coming off back-to-back seasons of 25 or fewer points.

Even with Neal’s remarkable consistency, this deal does bring some substantial risk. The 30-year old winger has seen his assist totals decline in recent years as he tends to create less room for himself and teammates, and he isn’t the same dynamic powerplay scorer that he was earlier in his career. There’s no guarantee that as he enters the latter part of the contract he’ll still be an effective second-line option, but at a near $6MM price tag will still be paid like one.

The Flames are obviously disappointed with their lack of success in 2017-18, and have done some hard work this summer to put themselves in a better position come the fall. After waiting until the middle rounds to even make a selection at the draft, they’re clearly in a win-now mode and can’t deviate from that plan.

New York Rangers Sign Fredrik Claesson

The New York Rangers have added a depth defenseman, signing Fredrik Claesson to a one-year, $700K contract according to Bob McKenzie of TSN. Claesson wasn’t given a qualifying offer by the Ottawa Senators, and reached unrestricted free agency for the first time.

The 25-year old Claesson is a worthwhile gamble for the Rangers, who will retain his rights as a restricted free agent at the end of the contract. After showing well in a limited role in 2016-17, Claesson struggled to really make an impact for the Senators last season and recorded just seven points in 64 games. That made him expendable as the team attempts to rebuild its blue line with or without Erik Karlsson, and this time it’s to the Rangers benefit. A $700K commitment is basically risk-free, as it can be completely buried in the minor leagues if necessary.

If Claesson does prove his 2016-17 is closer to his true talent, the Rangers have added a good all-around defenseman for a reasonable price. The team is working to rebuild their team with more youth and speed, and will ask the former Senator to battle with Marc Staal and John Gilmour for playing time on the left side. At the very least he offers a good injury replacement for the team, or a high-end defenseman for the Hartford Wolf Pack.

Tyler Bozak To Sign With St. Louis Blues

The St. Louis Blues have already been linked to David Perron, and will be bringing in another veteran forward to help out their group. Bob McKenzie of TSN reports that the Blues will sign Tyler Bozak when free agency opens, while Chris Johnston of Sportsnet reports it will be a three-year deal worth $15MM.

Bozak will be an upgrade for the Blues who have now swapped out Bozak for Kyle Brodziak, who is expected to sign with Edmonton. The 32-year-old Bozak finished last season with pedestrian 11 goals and 32 assists with the Maple Leafs as he has progressively seen his playing time decrease over the last five year when he averaged 20:57 ATOI. That average has dropped to just 15:39, but a solid face-off percentage of 53.6 percent helps.

Bozak, who has spent his entire nine-year career with the Toronto Maple Leafs, was 22nd all-time in games played with Toronto and tallied 136 goals and 365 points. With the unlikelihood that Toronto would bring him back due to their long-term cap restraints, Bozak was in high demand as the need for centers in the NHL has reached a premium.

Vegas Golden Knights To Sign Paul Stastny

11:20 AM: TSN’s Darren Dreger reports (Twitter link) that Stastny has agreed to sign a three-year contract with Vegas, while McKenzie later adds that the deal will carry an average annual value of $6.5MM.

8:13 AM: Even though there was a ton of speculation that Paul Stastny was headed back to Winnipeg—especially after the Jets cleared room by moving out Steve Mason’s $4.1MM cap hit—it seems there is a new contender for the veteran center. Bob McKenzie of TSN reports that the Vegas Golden Knights are the frontrunners for Stastny, who is one of the top free agents set to hit the open market.

Stastny, 32, is hitting free agency at a perfect time as he’s one of the few real top-six center options available behind John Tavares. That earned him a third-place finish on our Top 50 Free Agent list, and should provide a huge contract that will likely take him close to retirement. After being acquired midseason by the Jets, Stastny showed why he was well respected around the league with a solid 15 points in 17 playoff games. The veteran pivot anchored the team’s second line, and provided a boost to their special teams units. If he does end up in Vegas, he’ll be asked to do much of the same and replace some of the offense that the team seems set to lose with David Perron and James Neal.

With 53 points in 2017-18, Stastny actually registered a better offensive season than he’d had in several years, which may give pause to someone offering him a multi-year contract. There is a solid argument that Stastny will never hit the 50-point or 20-goal mark again, which adds some doubt to his effectiveness for Vegas or any other team going forward. The Golden Knights though shouldn’t be doubted, as under head coach Gerard Gallant last season almost every player on the roster achieved new heights in terms of offensive performance.

If Stastny does turn down Winnipeg and head to the desert, it will be interesting to see where the Jets move next. While they have plenty of cap space, they also have a huge amount of restricted free agents to sign this year and next. It’s possible they jump in on one of the other top free agent names, or potentially get involved in some of the high level trade discussions. Make no mistake, the Jets are in a win-now mode after their young team came together in 2017-18. Even without any additions they should be considered contenders, and with the prospect pool and cap space they still have, would be a tough team to write-off in any negotiation.

Still No Deal Between John Carlson, Washington Capitals

Over the weekend there was plenty of optimism from the Washington Capitals that they would be able to finalize a long-term extension with unrestricted free agent John Carlson, especially after moving out Brooks Orpik’s $5.5MM cap hit in a trade with the Colorado Avalanche. Carlson is expected to receive a massive contract as the best defensemen scheduled to hit the market, and at one point Capitals GM Brian MacLellan even used the word “close” to describe the negotiations. Today, as the interview period starts for free agents, a deal has still not been announced between the two sides. Bob McKenzie of TSN checked in with Carlson’s agent Rick Curran, who commented on the situation:

As of the moment we do not have a deal in place with Washington and as permitted, I am getting/taking calls from other interested teams. 

Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post also tweets that the Capitals have offered a multi-year contract to free agent defenseman Michal Kempny, another key player the team wants to get under contract before they actually hit the open market next Sunday. Carlson is the real target though, and his decision will likely have huge ramifications on the Capitals and the free agent market in general.

If there is any real chance that the 28-year old defenseman is heading to free agency, teams will have to hold onto their cap space in hopes of landing one of the biggest prizes. Carlson could demand in excess of $8MM per season, and for good reason—he’s coming off a career-high 68 points, which led all defenders in the NHL this year. He’s also been given more than 20 minutes of ice time in every season since he was a 20-year old rookie, and almost averaged 26 minutes a night in the team’s recent Stanley Cup run. Though he didn’t get a lot of support as a Conn Smythe winner, his performance in the playoffs could have been worth it. Carlson had 20 points in 24 games, while generating a whopping 80 shots on net.

Every team could use a player like Carlson on their blue line, but fitting him into their salary structure may be difficult. The next few days will be crucial for Washington as they try to convince him to stick around while others are offering him a chance elsewhere. If they can’t retain him, one has to wonder where else the Capitals look to use that cap space and if they’ll suddenly become a player for some of the other top names this summer.

Philipp Grubauer Generating Plenty Of Interest

Washington Capitals GM Brian MacLellan was very clear after the season that he would try to give Philipp Grubauer a chance to be a starting goaltender. That chance won’t be with the Capitals though, as MacLellan admitted he’d explore the trade market to try and find Grubauer an opportunity where he could step into a bigger role. In doing so, several sets of ears perked up around the league and speculation started swirling around who could afford to acquire the 26-year old goaltender.

Grubauer is a restricted free agent this summer, meaning a trade is the best outcome for the Capitals as well. Even with the increase in the salary cap from $75MM to $79.5MM, Washington doesn’t have a ton of room. Unrestricted free agent John Carlson may take half of their projected $15.7MM in cap space should they re-sign him, while Tom Wilson and others are also restricted free agents looking for raises. Grubauer, with all his success as the backup to Braden Holtby, is a luxury the team may not be able to afford.

He does have a successful resume though, which is likely why several teams have been calling with interest. Bob McKenzie of TSN was on the radio this morning reporting that there is plenty of interest in acquiring Grubauer, and listed the New York Islanders, Carolina Hurricanes, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks and Colorado Avalanche as teams that are “in” on the RFA goaltender. McKenzie suggests that teams may be willing to part with a first or second round pick if they believe Grubauer can step into a starting role, or at least a tandem with one of their current options. That goes along with the reports from Craig Custance of The Athletic (subscription required) and Isabelle Khurshudyan of the Washington Post that the Capitals are looking for—or perhaps expecting—a late first or early second-round pick in exchange for their backup goaltender.

None of this means that the team will definitely trade Grubauer at the draft this weekend, but a draft pick today is worth more than one down the line in terms of development. The Capitals are looking to compete for a second consecutive Stanley Cup in 2018-19, but are also committed to building a program that can continue contending long-term. They are one of the few contending teams that did not give up their first-round pick at this year’s trade deadline, and are in good shape to keep adding prospects to a pipeline that has produced several key players over the years. If they can procure a pick in tonight’s first round, it would by default be higher than their first selection and allow them some more currency to try and work with as they strengthen their roster for another run.

Buffalo Sabres Not Expected To Qualify Robin Lehner

There have been rumors swirling around the future of Robin Lehner since the season ends, and now Bob McKenzie of TSN reports that the Buffalo Sabres are not expected to extend a qualifying offer to their starting goaltender. Lehner is a restricted free agent but would become an unrestricted free agent if he does not receive an offer. Sabres GM Jason Botterill said at the end of the season that Linus Ullmark would be one of the team’s goaltenders in 2018-19, but wouldn’t commit to anyone else.

This will bring to an end what has been an up-and-down tenure for Lehner with the Sabres.  Former GM Tim Murray paid a first-round pick (which turned into center Colin White) to secure his services back in 2015 and they didn’t get a great return on that investment.  He was injured for a big chunk of 2015-16 before bouncing back with a good 2016-17 campaign where he had a .920 SV% and a 2.68 GAA in 59 games which helped him earn a one-year, $4MM contract last offseason.

However, things went off the rails this past season.  Lehner struggled throughout the year and didn’t exactly hide his displeasure with how things were going.  Overall, his SV% dropped to .908 while his GAA jumped to 3.01, numbers that were worse than the league average.  Accordingly, it’s not entirely surprising that the Sabres have opted not to qualify him at that same $4MM for next season.

Botterill will now need to decide if he is going to pursue a second goaltender via a trade in the coming days or look to the free agent market which is highlighted by the likes of Carter Hutton, Jaroslav Halak, and Jonathan Bernier, among others.  Meanwhile, Lehner will likely have to settle for a one-year deal at a considerable discount from what he made in 2017-18 in the hopes of restoring his value around the league for next offseason.
