Minnesota Wild Recall Nine Players

The Iowa Wild were eliminated from Calder Cup contention a few days ago, but it isn’t summer vacation for all their players yet. Nine members of Iowa’s roster are on their way to join the Minnesota Wild as a set of “Black Aces,” players who will practice with the club and serve as injury insurance in the playoffs.

Adam Beckman, Steven Fogarty, Nic Petan, Marco Rossi, Nick Swaney, Samuel Walker, Daemon Hunt, Dakota Mermis, and Zane McIntyre have all been recalled.

Of course, after dropping game five on Tuesday the Wild are on the brink of elimination themselves. They’ll take on the Dallas Stars in a do-or-die matchup tomorrow night, trying to force a game seven in the first-round series.

All but Hunt have appeared in the NHL previously. The 20-year-old defenseman is in his first professional season after being selected 65th overall in 2020, and posted 11 points in 59 regular season games for Iowa.

The others are a mix of minor league veterans and top prospects. Rossi falls into the latter category, though his time in the NHL this year didn’t go well. The 2020 ninth-overall pick registered just a single assist (and no goals) in 19 games with Minnesota. While his development has been interrupted by health issues, Rossi’s inability to grab a roster spot was one of the season’s low points for the Wild.

There is at least a possibility that someone from this group does enter the lineup. According to Michael Russo of The Athletic, Mats Zuccarello and Ryan Hartman are both not practicing today, though their status for tomorrow’s game is unclear.

The Coyotes have elected to take Toronto’s 2025 second-round pick instead of their 2023 third-round selection to complete last year’s Nick Ritchie trade, reports NorthStar Bets’ Chris Johnston (Twitter link).  Arizona had until yesterday to make the decision.  This means that Toronto now has three draft picks remaining this season with the other two being later-round selections (fifth round and sixth round).  Meanwhile, the Coyotes now have four second-round selections for the 2025 draft.

Elsewhere around the hockey world:

  • The Wild announced (Twitter link) that they’ve re-assigned forward Adam Beckman to AHL Iowa. The 21-year-old has been held off the scoresheet in nine games with Minnesota this season but has 18 goals and nine assists in 43 games in the minors.  They now have one spot open on their 23-man roster.
  • We’re at the time of the year when players on expiring contracts being absent is worth keeping track of. However, while the Capitals were without Marcus Johansson for their game this afternoon against the Rangers, NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti relays (Twitter link) that the winger has a non-COVID illness.  Johansson is on an expiring deal that carries a $1.1MM cap hit and has 28 points in 60 games this season which could draw some interest around the league.
  • On the heels of Bally Sports skipping an interest payment earlier this month which is causing some concern for the NHL and the dozen teams with regional rights under that umbrella, another regional broadcaster is pulling the plug. John Ourand of the Sports Business Journal relays that Warner Bros. Discovery, which operates AT&T SportsNet and has a stake in Root Sports, is intending to divest its interests in regional sports rights by the end of March. Joe Flint of the Wall Street Journal adds that they’re proposing to the impacted teams (Vegas, Seattle, and Pittsburgh are the NHL ones) that they take back the rights at no fees as long as they sign a release stating there are no future financial claims against the network.  With nearly half the league having their regional rights in question, it’s quite possible this could materially affect the salary cap moving forward.

The Minnesota Wild, looking for a spark after losing five of six, have recalled Adam Beckman from the minor leagues. The move comes just ahead of a game against the division-leading Dallas Stars, a critical matchup if the Wild want to stay in the Central Division chase.

Beckman, 21, has played in six games this season for Minnesota and nine overall, but is still looking for his first NHL goal. It hasn’t been nearly as difficult in the minor leagues, where he has 18 tallies through 43 games so far. The third-round pick has always been a scoring threat, going back to his post-draft year when he put up 48 goals in 63 games with the Spokane Chiefs.

Hopefully, he can bring some of that magic with him to the NHL this time around. Minnesota has scored just ten times in that six-game stretch and sit 25th overall in goals for. For a team that still has its sights set on the playoffs, that just simply hasn’t been good enough. Beckman isn’t going to change the entire offense of the Wild immediately, but he’ll get a chance to establish himself as they try to turn things around.

The Minnesota Wild have sent forwards Adam Beckman and Sammy Walker back to the AHL’s Iowa Wild, according to a team tweet today.

Both Beckman and Walker were called up on December 26 after Marcus Foligno didn’t travel with the team to Winnipeg for the game against the Jets on the 27th. The young players traveled with the team for their last two games of the year. Walker had one goal, and Beckman didn’t get on the scoresheet.

In the AHL, both players are doing considerably well. Beckman has 15 points in 25 games, and Walker has 24 points in 23 games.

Walker especially has been a nice surprise for the Wild after signing as a free agent out of the University of Minnesota. He’s gotten into six contests with the Wild over the course of the year, scoring just the one goal, but has used his speed to draw attention early on in his career. In no time, he’s worked his way up to the top of the organizational depth chart in terms of AHL call-up options.

5:39 pm: The Wild made the recall official on Monday night. Walker and Beckman join the team ahead of their game against Winnipeg tomorrow.

3:56 pm: According to The Athletic’s Michael Russo, the Minnesota Wild are expected to recall a pair of forwards in that of Sammy Walker and Adam Beckman from the Iowa Wild, their AHL affiliate. Russo adds that forward Marcus Foligno, who is suffering from a lower-body injury, is not expected to travel with the team tomorrow morning to take on the Winnipeg Jets later that night. In addition to Foligno, the Wild are also going to be without forward Mason Shaw, who is serving a two-game suspension.

Foligno, who was injured in Wednesday’s game in Anaheim against the Ducks, missed Thursday’s game against the San Jose Sharks with the injury and now it appears he’ll be missing tomorrow’s game too. There doesn’t appear to be a timetable for Foligno, however after Thursday’s game, Wild head coach Dean Evason told Russo he expected the forward to be okay after the four-day holiday break. Though the veteran clearly isn’t good-to-go just yet, Evason’s comments show this injury likely isn’t to be anything long-term.

Walker, 23, made his professional debut this season after a four-year stint at the University of Minnesota. The former Tampa Bay Lightning draft pick has been a standout thus far with Iowa, registering 24 points in 23 games, and made his NHL debut back on December 10th, skating in four NHL contests to date.

The 21-year-old Beckman has also skated in just four NHL games this season after making his debut last season. The forward turned pro back in 2020-21 after a stellar WHL career with the Spokane Chiefs. A 2019 third-round selection of the Wild, Beckman is off to a solid start with Iowa this season tallying 15 points in his first 25 AHL games.

The Minnesota Wild have sent Adam Beckman to the minor leagues, after playing fewer than ten minutes in each of his last three games. The team has several options to replace him, including the potential return of Jordan Greenway, who has been practicing of late.

One thing that Michael Russo of The Athletic also points out is that tomorrow night, the Wild will be honoring Alex Goligoski for playing 1,000 games in the league, a feat he accomplished last month. The team could choose to go with seven defensemen to get him into the lineup, as he’s not a regular at the moment with younger, more effective options ahead of him.

Either way, the Wild need to shake something up. The team has lost three in a row and remains under .500 on the season. They are ahead of only the Chicago Blackhawks and Arizona Coyotes in the Central Division standings, two teams who are trying to finish as low as possible this season.

Greenway, who has played just a handful of shifts this season, was skating with Frederick Gaudreau and Matt Boldy at practice according to Sarah McLellan of the Star Tribune. The 25-year-old has been a big part of the team’s identity the last few years and was one-third of a top defensive line with Marcus Foligno and Joel Eriksson Ek last season.

Continuing with a busy Sunday of roster moves, the Minnesota Wild announced that they are bringing a pair of forwards up from the AHL, recalling Adam Beckman and Joseph Cramarossa. The team did not announced any corresponding moves. The transaction brings the Wild up to 23 players on their roster, the maximum. Importantly, the team had only been carrying 12 forwards after re-assigning Steven Fogarty on Friday. Now, they should have additional assurance up front.

Beckman, 21, was a third-round pick of the Wild back in 2019 and made his NHL debut last season. After three impressive seasons with the Spokane Chiefs in the WHL, Beckman turned pro at the tail-end of the 2020-21 season, recording five points in nine games as a member of the Iowa Wild. The forward became a full-time pro last season, getting into 68 games for Iowa where he scored 11 goals to go with 23 assists. This season, the young forward is off to a fast start, scoring three goals with three assists in six games for Iowa.

A long-time AHL veteran, Cramarossa, 30, has spent three seasons in the Wild organization, primarily with Iowa. The veteran did manage to get into one NHL game last season, marking the third season in which he did so. the 30-year-old’s most prominent NHL action came back in 2016-17 as a member of the Anaheim Ducks and Vancouver Canucks, where he recorded 10 points in 59 games. He’s had just five games of NHL action since then, but has become a reliable, physical forward at the AHL level. Cramarossa has four points and a whopping 23 penalty minutes in just eight games with Iowa to start this season.
