Bruins Sign Loke Johansson To Three-Year Entry-Level Contract

The Bruins announced they’ve signed defense prospect Loke Johansson to a three-year, entry-level contract. It will carry a cap hit of $860K, but minor-league salary and bonus details were not disclosed.

Johansson, 19 next month, was a sixth-round pick of the Bruins in this year’s draft (No. 186 overall). The stay-at-home defender was selected mainly due to his size – he’s already 6’3″ and 214 lbs.

He’s not just a heavy hitter and enforcer, though. Johansson flashed legitimate upside last year playing professionally in Sweden. A part of the AIK organization, he had 13 points and a +5 rating in 33 appearances with their U-20 club. He also made his professional debut, appearing in 19 games for the senior club in the second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan while holding his own with an assist and a +1 rating.

The Stockholm native made the jump to North America for 2024-25, just not to play pro hockey. He’s remaining at the major junior level after being selected in the CHL Import Draft by the QMJHL’s Moncton Wildcats. Through 15 games with the club, he has a goal and four assists with 16 PIMs and a +9 rating.

Elite Prospects calls his brand of hockey “simple,” adding that “he’s a technically sound skater, able to cover a lot of ground with his four-way mobility and general shiftiness.” Since he wasn’t selected from a CHL club and instead arrived in Moncton after being drafted, he’s not subject to the NHL-CHL transfer agreement and could now theoretically head to AHL Providence at any time after signing his ELC. It’s fair to assume the Bruins will leave him on loan to Moncton for the remainder of the season for development purposes, though.

As such, Johansson’s contract will slide for at least one season as he won’t appear in at least 10 NHL contests in 2024-25. The same could happen next season if he doesn’t get into 10 games in 2025-26. If there are signing bonuses in the contract, the cap hit of the deal will decrease slightly with each slide, as those get paid out regardless of whether the contract goes into effect.

Lucas Johansen Signs With AHL Henderson

Former Capitals first-round pick Lucas Johansen is joining the Golden Knights organization on a one-year contract with AHL Henderson, per a team announcement.

Johansen, 27 next week, had remained in the Washington organization through last season. He was mainly a fixture with the team’s AHL club in Hershey, though, appearing in just nine NHL games after being selected 28th overall in the 2016 draft.

A career-high six of those NHL games came for Johansen in 2023-24. He recorded his second career NHL assist and added a +1 rating, four shots on goal, and seven blocks while averaging 14:16 per game. With so little NHL experience, he quickly met the requirements for Group VI unrestricted free agency and hit the open market a year ahead of schedule.

Johansen inked a professional tryout with the Predators in September, hoping to stick around the former stomping grounds of his older brother, Ryan Johansen. However, he was released from the NHL camp less than two weeks later and was subsequently let go from a brief tryout with their AHL affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals.

He heads to Nevada to join the Silver Knights on a full-fledged contract for the rest of the season, not a PTO. The British Columbia native brings 257 games of AHL experience to Vegas’ feeder club, all of which came in a Hershey Bears sweater. The 6’2″ left-shot defenseman totaled 20 goals, 72 assists, and 92 points with a +11 rating and is coming off back-to-back Calder Cup championships.

In the NHL’s eyes, Johansen remains an unrestricted free agent and can sign with any club. However, Vegas is the most likely, given their front office displayed enough interest to bring him in on a minor-league deal. If an NHL team signed him to a two-way contract, he would need to clear waivers to return to the AHL.

Senators Notes: Zub, Pinto, Perron

The Senators will indeed have Artem Zub back in the lineup to face the Islanders tonight, per TSN 1200 Ottawa. Zub had missed the last nine games with a concussion he sustained early in the team’s third game of the season against the Kings back on Oct. 14, but he’s been skating with the team for around a week, and it became clear yesterday that he was likely to return today at home.

It will be Jacob Bernard-Docker coming out of the lineup to make way for Zub’s return, a bit of a surprise given his exemplary possession play (55.3 CF%, fourth on the team). Travis Hamonic remains in the lineup despite going without a point and recording a -5 rating with a 46.7 CF% through 12 appearances. Zub will skate in his usual top-pairing role alongside Jake Sanderson.

Zub posted a +1 rating, one block and three hits in his three regular-season contests last month while averaging 13:58 per game, a number that was dragged down significantly given he sustained his concussion in the first period of his third game. He recorded a career-high 20 assists and 25 points with 122 blocks and 139 hits for the Sens last year in 69 games. Head injuries are becoming a bit of an unfortunate trend for Zub, who missed seven games early last season with a concussion as well and 12 games in 2022-23 with a fractured jaw.

  • Shane Pinto skated before today’s game, but he didn’t take line rushes and will remain out against the Isles, per TSN 1200. Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia reported Wednesday that he might be an option to return, but instead, he’ll miss a seventh straight game with an undisclosed injury. He’s still listed as week-to-week but appears close to a return if his presence in tonight’s game was questionable 24 hours beforehand.
  • The same goes for David Perron, who remains around the club for home games and practiced today but remains out of the lineup while on personal leave. The 36-year-old, who signed a two-year, $8MM contract in free agency over the summer, had no points and a -4 rating in five contests before departing the team midway through last month.

Bruins’ Andrew Peeke Out Week-To-Week

An upper-body injury is expected to keep Bruins defenseman Andrew Peeke on the shelf for multiple weeks, head coach Jim Montgomery told Joe Haggerty of Boston Sports Journal.

Peeke sustained the injury on Tuesday night versus the Maple Leafs, leaving the game in the first period after being hit by Max Pacioretty (video link via Sportsnet). Pacioretty was not penalized on the play.

A second-round pick of the Blue Jackets back in 2016, Peeke has flashed upside as a physical stay-at-home defender but was overtaxed in a top-four role in Columbus during his first couple of years as a full-time NHLer. He’s received reduced minutes since the beginning of the 2023-24 campaign and was acquired by the Bruins at the trade deadline for a 2027 third-round pick and Jakub Zbořil. He’s played a third-pairing role on a nightly basis for the Bruins through the first month of this season, however, only being healthy scratched once. The right-shot defenseman is averaging 16:12 per game and has logged two assists, ranking third on the team with 21 blocks.

The Bruins will look to Mason Lohrei and Parker Wotherspoon to factor in on a nightly basis with Peeke out after both were healthy scratches multiple times in the early going. Boston will likely make a recall from AHL Providence in the coming days to have an extra healthy defenseman on hand, and since they have an open roster spot, they can do so without placing Peeke on injured reserve. That could be veteran Jordan Oesterle, who’s appeared in parts of 10 straight NHL seasons with the Oilers, Blackhawks, Coyotes, Red Wings, and Flames and has six points in six games for the P-Bruins to start the season.

Canucks Notes: Demko, Forbort, Joshua

The Canucks have waited a long time to see Thatcher Demko return to practice since exiting their first-round series against the Predators last season with a mysterious knee injury, and it finally came to pass yesterday, the team relayed. Vancouver has received expert goaltending from late-summer pickup Kevin Lankinen in the meantime (.923 SV%, 2.09 GAA), but getting last year’s Vezina Trophy runner-up back in the fold is still top of mind.

It’s the most demonstrable step toward a return that Demko has taken in months, although his return to practice has been on the horizon for the past week. He began working off-ice with goalie coach Marko Torenius last Friday and had an appointment to earn his medical clearance to practice earlier this week.

Demko told reporters during training camp that the specific injury was to the popliteus muscle in one of his knees. This small muscle in the back of the leg plays a key role in stabilizing the knee and allowing it to flex. Instances of popliteal injury in professional sports are rare, even more so in hockey, leading to much uncertainty around his return timeline over the past few months.

Demko, who will be 29 next month, had a career-best 35 wins, .918 SV%, 2.45 GAA, five shutouts, and 21.2 GSAA last season. In addition to finishing second in Vezina Trophy voting, he was selected to the 2024 NHL All-Star Game and was a Second-Team All-Star.

  • Injury news isn’t as positive regarding defenseman Derek Forbort, who could be sidelined for over a month with the knee injury he sustained in practice Monday, reports Irfaan Gaffar of Daily Faceoff. Forbort missed Tuesday’s win over the Ducks with the injury and missed most of October due to personal reasons, limiting him to just one appearance since Oct. 15. Since signing a one-year, $1.5MM contract in Vancouver in free agency, he has one assist and a -2 rating in four appearances while averaging 16:30 per game. The physical left-shot defender has registered just one hit and has controlled 51.8% of shot attempts and 33.3% of expected goals at even strength.
  • Dakota Joshua is still close to returning after undergoing surgery to remove testicular cancer over the offseason but won’t do so today versus the Kings, head coach Rick Tocchet told Sportsnet’s Iain MacIntyre. Tocchet said his absence from yesterday’s practice and unavailability today isn’t indicative of a setback but instead of the team’s cautious approach to his recovery. Joshua has missed all 11 Canucks games this season after signing a four-year, $13MM extension to stay in Vancouver a few days before the start of free agency.

Avalanche Notes: Landeskog, Makar, Georgiev

Colorado Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar is hopeful that forward Gabriel Landeskog will be back at some point this season (as per Evan Rawal of the Denver Gazette). Landeskog suffered a setback (as per TSN) during his recovery from a knee injury that has kept him off the ice for over two years. The 31-year-old underwent knee surgery shortly after the Avalanche won the Stanley Cup in 2022 and his knee eventually required a cartilage transplant in May 2023.

Landeskog’s recovery has been an on-again-off-again ordeal that has required a great deal of patience. Anytime Landeskog has felt discomfort he has stopped skating to rest his ailing knee.

In other Colorado Avalanche notes:

  • Avalanche defenseman Cale Makar will travel with the club for their game tomorrow night, but it appears as though he will be a game-time decision (as per Ryan Boulding of NHL.com). The Avalanche take on the red-hot Winnipeg Jets tomorrow night as they try to climb back to .500. The 26-year-old left last night’s 6-3 win over Seattle after a single shift in the third period and is okay to travel, but he and the Avalanche will proceed with caution and see how he feels tomorrow before making a call on his status.
  • The Avalanche are set to start netminder Alexandar Georgiev when they take on the Winnipeg Jets tomorrow night (as per Ryan Boulding of NHL.com). Georgiev has struggled immensely to start the season, sporting a 1-4-0 record with a .822 save percentage and a 4.62 goals-against average. In his last start, the 28-year-old stopped 21 of 24 shots as the Avalanche fell 5-2 to the Chicago Blackhawks. Georgiev is in the final season of a three-year deal and is currently carrying a $3.4MM cap hit this season. He will be an unrestricted free agent next summer and will need to turn his season around if he hopes to cash in on the open market in 2025.

Atlantic Notes: Canadiens, Zub, Pinto

Many of the players on the Montreal Canadiens believe that they are in the learning-to-win stage of their rebuild and see a pair of recent losses as falling below expectations (as per Arpon Basu of The Athletic). Montreal lost to both the Pittsburgh Penguins and Calgary Flames in the past three days and could have won both of those games, particularly the Flames game (a game they led with less than three minutes left to play).

The Canadiens players have tried to look at the moral victories they can take from their two most recent losses, but given their expectations for this season, they can only see their recent stretch of play as falling below the standard they have set for themselves this season.

In other Atlantic Division notes:

  • Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia is reporting that Ottawa Senators defenseman Artem Zub could play tomorrow night when the team takes on the New York Islanders. Zub skated today as he tries to work his way back into the lineup after missing nine games. The 29-year-old suffered a concussion on October 14th against the Los Angeles Kings and has dressed in just three games this season. Ottawa badly needs Zub back on the ice, as his injury has thrust veteran Travis Hamonic into the top four, which isn’t an ideal situation for a team with playoff aspirations.
  • Senators center Shane Pinto could also suit up tomorrow night, according to Ottawa head coach Travis Green, who said that he is close (as per Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia). Pinto had skated on Monday before Ottawa made the trip to Buffalo and skated again today as he tries to work back from an undisclosed injury that has caused him to miss six games. Pinto’s presence in the lineup gives the Senators bottom six a completely different dynamic, given that Pinto is probably good enough to play in the top six but is relegated to third-line center duties because of the team’s depth down the middle.

Central Notes: Joseph, Kapanen, Marchment

St. Louis Blues forward Mathieu Joseph skated today as he tries to work his way back into the lineup from a lower-body injury (as per Lou Korac of NHL.com). Joseph hasn’t played since October 26th against the Montreal Canadiens after he was hurt in the third period of a 5-2 loss. To this point, Joseph has missed four games, and it seems likely that his number of missed games will increase.

Joseph is unlikely to play tomorrow night given that he didn’t take much contact today and focused more on flow drills. The 27-year-old has had a decent start to the season, posting two goals and two assists in nine games to go along with 13 hits and 14 shots on net.

In other Central Division notes:

  • St. Louis Blues head coach Drew Bannister believes that forward Kasperi Kapanen could be an option to return to the Blues lineup tomorrow night (as per Matthew DeFranks of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch). Kapanen has missed the Blues’ past three games with an upper-body injury and will be looking to get his season on track as it has been a rough start for the former first-round pick. Kapanen has just a single goal in eight appearances this season and has struggled with possession, committing seven turnovers and seeing his team control just 46.5% of the play (at even strength).
  • Dallas Stars forward Mason Marchment is considered day-to-day with an undisclosed injury according to head coach Pete DeBoer (as per Lia Assimakopoulos of Dallas Morning News). Marchment has been dealing with an issue since he fought during the second Global Series game on Saturday night against the Florida Panthers. Marchment had a run-in with Panthers defender Nate Schmidt after he had boarded the defenseman from behind. Marchment took the worst of the exchange and eventually fell to the ice.

Predators Could Test Young Prospects, Trust Andrew Brunette Amid Struggles

The Nashville Predators are far from where they want to be after spending a heap to sign Steven Stamkos, Jonathan Marchessault, and Brady Skjei this summer. The team sits at the bottom of the Central Division with a 4-7-1 record – one less win than the notably-rebuilding Chicago Blackhawks. That led general manager Barry Trotz to hint that a complete teardown would follow continued failure, saying in an interview on Nashville’s 102.5 The Game on Tuesday, “I’m trying to do some things right now. We will be limited a little because of the contracts that we have… but if we don’t get it going, then I’m going to start our rebuild plan.”

Trotz went on to clarify the comments to Alex Daugherty of The Tennessean earlier today, emphasizing that the team won’t, “burn it down to the studs”. Instead, any “rebuild” would be focused around finding space for the team’s young core. Trotz said, “if it doesn’t work, I’ve still got to buy the time for those young players.”

He went on to name roughly 10 players that he identifies as the team’s next-up. Per Daugherty, that list includes forwards Teddy Stiga, Reid Schaefer, Joakim Kemell, and Matthew Wood; and defenders Tanner Molendyk and Andrew Gibson. Trotz pointed out that the team is walking a fine line between trying to be competitive and trying to properly develop their youngsters, and pointed out that they could take out veterans down the depth chart to give prospects more of a chance. Most notably, Nashville is searching for a productive second-line center – a role that could one day be filled by Schaefer, Kemell, or Zachary L’Heureux.

The dozen players that Trotz mentioned are certainly a strong core to build around. The grouping – save for Wood, Molendyk, and Gibson – are currently driving the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals to clear success. The team is 8-1-0 through their first nine games, spurred by Kemell’s eight points in nine games, L’Heureux’s five points in four games, and Fedor Svechkov’s five points in five games. It’s a trio that’s found success time-and-time-again in Milwaukee, though L’Heureux’s seven appearances this year stand as the only NHL time among them all. The oft-undisciplined winger managed two assists and one penalty in those appearances – just low enough to fall out of Nashville’s lineup, despite being one of only 12 Predators with multiple points this season.

While they all still need to develop NHL-ready traits, Nashville’s prospect pool offers a large array of takeover ability. Molendyk’s ability to create pace and tempo through hard passes in the neutral zone made him a standout at this year’s training camp; while each of Kemell, Wood, and Schaefer have thrived on the back of hard shooting and gritty play along the boards. They’re translatable talents that Nashville should be reaping soon. At least, that’s Trotz’s full intention – as he emphasized to Daugherty that the last thing he wants to do is drag Predators fans through a long-term rebuild.

Trotz also pointed out that the head coach Andrew Brunette isn’t on the hot seat. Brunette led Nashville to a 47-30-5 record and first-round playoff exit last season, and has made his frustrations with the lack of cohesivity in the lineup known to the GM. Speaking on his head coach, Trotz said, “He’s saying ’I’ve got no one going right now.’… Nothing’s really working. You’re trying hard to find the magic potion and you get a little frustrated.”

Nashville’s new additions are struggling in their new setting. The trio of Stamkos, Skjei, and Marchessault are sitting at five, six, and seven points through 12 games respectively – far too little for the prices they were paid this summer. The depth isn’t fairing much better, with Philip Tomasino and Jeremy Lauzon (no scoring) being outscored by starting goaltender Juuse Saros (one assist). That’s led the team to a dismal record, and led Trotz to start turning his attention towards the young bloods. The team likely still sits a few steps away from fully leaning into their promising prospects, but continued struggles will force a hard decision sooner rather than later, and getting a chance to play alongside future Hall-of-Famers in Stamkos and Josi could be a cheeky way to accelerate their development.

Devils Fire AHL Head Coach Kevin Dineen, Promote Ryan Parent

The New Jersey Devils have relieved Utica Comets head coach Kevin Dineen of his duties and promoted Ryan Parent as interim head coach for the remainder of the year, per NHL.com’s Mike Morreale. Utica has lost each of their first nine games, only taking one to extra time. They’re being outscored 16-to-40 in the outings. New Jersey has also hired Eric Weinrich as an interim assistant coach.

It’s been a dismal start for the Devils’ affiliate. Only two players on the team are scoring at-or-above a point-per game pace – Nolan Foote, who has eight points in eight games, and Seamus Casey, with seven points in five games. Utica has struggled even with the pair’s production, with seven Comets still searching for their first point of the season and an additional nine looking for their second.

The early struggles were enough for New Jersey to call an early end to Dineen’s fourth season at the helm. He joined Utica in 2021-22, posting a hardy 43-20-9 record and earning the Comets a first-round bye in the postseason. But that didn’t help them much in the Division semifinals, with Utica falling to Rochester 3-2. Dineen returned Utica to the playoffs in the following year – though with a worser record of 35-27-10. That forced them to participate in the first-round play-in, where they beat Laval 2-0, but Utica again failed to work past the Division semifinals – this time falling to Toronto 3-1. The pair of playoff losses highlighted Dineen’s slide, and he’d fail to lead Utica to the postseason for a third time last year – continuing to slip with a 32-29-11 record.

Dineen’s struggles have hit a peak this year, and he’ll now be replaced by another former pro player in Ryan Parent. Parent – a 2005 first-round pick who played in 251 career AHL games across 10 seasons – joined the Devils organization as an AHL coach in 2018, when the team was still affiliated with the Binghamton Devils. He joined the organization’s move to Utica in 2021 – staying a reliable feature of the Devils’ prospect development.

In speaking on Parent’s promotion, Utica general manager Dan MacKinnon said, “In his seven years with our AHL affiliate, Ryan Parent has established a track record of transparently communicating with young players and teaching good habits, while drawing on his own playing experiences… Those characteristics will serve him well in this new role where he will need to develop, lead, and relate to players at all different stages of their pro hockey careers.” MacKinnon also noted that New Jersey felt the need to make a change while the season was still young.
