Sabres Claim Tyson Jost Off Waivers From Wild

November 19, 2022 at 1:06 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 2 Comments

The Sabres have added some extra depth up front as TSN’s Darren Dreger reports (Twitter link) that they have claimed center Tyson Jost off waivers from Minnesota.

The 24-year-old was acquired by the Wild back at the trade deadline last season in exchange for Nico Sturm.  They were hoping that a change of scenery would help Jost to unlock the potential he showed in the past that made him the 10th overall pick in 2016.  He was a little better down the stretch last season with six points in 21 games which gave them cause for a little bit of optimism heading into this season.

Unfortunately, things haven’t gone well this season.  Jost was limited to just three assists in 12 games while spending a lot of time on the left wing.  He was also a healthy scratch in five games and that’s simply not a good return on a $2MM price tag.  Unable to trade him, the Wild put Jost on waivers yesterday.  His full contract will come off the books which will give GM Bill Guerin considerably more flexibility as he looks to upgrade his roster that currently sits on the outside looking in at the playoff race.

As for Buffalo, it’s a claim that doesn’t carry a lot of risk and there’s a clear path to playing time for Jost.  Riley Sheahan is currently playing center on their fourth line and Jost represents a younger, more talented option at this point of his career.  If the Sabres envision him on the wing, Anders Bjork has already cleared waivers this season and the Sabres took advantage of that as he was sent back to AHL Rochester in a corresponding move.

Notably, Jost’s contract is a little back-loaded so while his cap hit is $2MM, his qualifying offer next summer stands at $2.25MM, his actual salary this season.  He’ll need to show some improvement if he wants a chance at receiving that tender in June; perhaps this change of scenery will be the one to help get him going.

Minnesota Wild Recall Nic Petan

November 18, 2022 at 4:30 pm CDT | by Ethan Hetu Leave a Comment

With Adam Beckman reassigned to the AHL’s Iowa Wild and Tyson Jost on waivers, the Minnesota Wild have space for another forward. Per a team announcement, they’ve recalled Nic Petan from Iowa to fill a space on their roster.

Petan, 27, was signed this summer by the team to serve as organization depth and has yet to make his NHL debut for Minnesota. This recall puts him in a position to do so. The five-foot-nine forward has been an elite AHL scorer in recent years, and he has eight points in five AHL games so far this season.

While scoring success at the NHL level has eluded Petan, the Wild have been able to get the most out of players once tagged as depth contributors, such as with Frederick Gaudreau and Ryan Hartman. Now Petan will have a chance to join that group if he can play well.

The Wild are also expecting to get Jordan Greenway back from injury in the relatively near future, but since he isn’t expected to be ready for their next game Petan will get a chance instead.

Minnesota Wild To Waive Tyson Jost

November 18, 2022 at 12:56 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 2 Comments

Forward Tyson Jost will be placed on waivers by the Minnesota Wild when the 1:00 p.m. CT deadline hits, according to a Tweet from the team’s public relations department.

After a strong training camp, it’s been anything but to begin the season for Jost. The 24-year-old, acquired via trade last season, has just three assists through 12 games and has been a healthy scratch five times. Averaging just 12:44 per night, his spot in the lineup has faded away with Jordan Greenway and Marcus Foligno returning to health.

His $2MM cap hit will likely be a deterrent for most teams, keeping him in the Wild organization. However, it’s not inconceivable that a team near the bottom of the standings would take a flyer on the 2016 tenth overall pick. However, he’s only managed to eclipse the 10-goal mark twice and never had more than 30 points in a 354-game NHL career.

The last time Jost played in the AHL was 2018-19, scoring five points in an eight-game stint. It seems as though that might be where he ends up for at least a few days, if he clears waivers.

Minnesota Wild Re-Assign Adam Beckman

November 18, 2022 at 10:42 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Minnesota Wild have sent Adam Beckman to the minor leagues, after playing fewer than ten minutes in each of his last three games. The team has several options to replace him, including the potential return of Jordan Greenway, who has been practicing of late.

One thing that Michael Russo of The Athletic also points out is that tomorrow night, the Wild will be honoring Alex Goligoski for playing 1,000 games in the league, a feat he accomplished last month. The team could choose to go with seven defensemen to get him into the lineup, as he’s not a regular at the moment with younger, more effective options ahead of him.

Either way, the Wild need to shake something up. The team has lost three in a row and remains under .500 on the season. They are ahead of only the Chicago Blackhawks and Arizona Coyotes in the Central Division standings, two teams who are trying to finish as low as possible this season.

Greenway, who has played just a handful of shifts this season, was skating with Frederick Gaudreau and Matt Boldy at practice according to Sarah McLellan of the Star Tribune. The 25-year-old has been a big part of the team’s identity the last few years and was one-third of a top defensive line with Marcus Foligno and Joel Eriksson Ek last season.

Marc-Andre Fleury Out With Upper-Body Injury

November 16, 2022 at 4:30 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

4:30 pm: The Wild have recalled McIntyre, while moving Fleury to injured reserve. Hunter Jones has been recalled to the AHL’s Iowa Wild in a corresponding move.

12:10 pm: The Minnesota Wild will be recalling a goaltender from the minor leagues, as Marc-Andre Fleury has sustained an upper-body injury. Michael Russo of The Athletic reports that the veteran netminder is undergoing an evaluation today and the team does not yet have a timeline for his return.

Fleury, who will turn 38 in less than two weeks, has started 12 of Minnesota’s 16 games this season and has a .906 save percentage. Filip Gustavsson, the team’s backup, actually has some better numbers but has lost four of the five games he has appeared in.

The likely candidate to take over the starting role is Gustavsson, but there is at least some intrigue over who will come up to join him. The team has Zane McIntyre as a veteran minor league option, but he hasn’t appeared in the NHL since the 2016-17 season.

There is also Jesper Wallstedt, the 20th overall pick in 2021 and a top goaltending prospect. Wallstedt only turned 20 years old a few days ago and has four games of experience in North America, but did start on a regular basis in the SHL the last two seasons. In 22 appearances for Lulea HF last year, he posted a .917 save percentage with a goals-against average of just 1.98. The young netminder also won Best Goaltender at the World Juniors, and took Lulea to the SHL Finals.

While it may not be his time yet, Wallstedt is the team’s future in net and there will be cries for his recall if the team loses Fleury for a substantial amount of time, or Gustavsson struggles in his place.

Minnesota Wild Re-Assign Joseph Cramarossa

November 14, 2022 at 11:40 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Despite heading out on the road for a game in Nashville tomorrow, the Minnesota Wild have sent Joseph Cramarossa to the minor leagues. That leaves the team with an open roster spot, potentially for Brandon Duhaime to be activated if he is ready to return from injury.

Cramarossa, 30, has played in four games for the Wild this season, scoring a goal and recording eight hits. The minor league veteran isn’t really known for his offense even at the AHL level but can come in and play a fourth-line role without risk. He’ll likely be back up at some point this season when the team is dealing with more injuries, but shouldn’t be considered a full-time option.

Duhaime has been out since the beginning of the month, after scoring two goals and three points in his first ten games of the season. The uber-physical forward had 122 penalty minutes and 201 hits last season (his first) for the Wild, while also chipping in six goals. If he’s not ready, Cramarossa’s assignment could mean that Tyson Jost is going to re-enter the lineup after being made a healthy scratch recently.

The 24-year-old Jost hasn’t scored yet this season and failed to even register a shot on goal in each of his last two appearances. His ice time in those games was reduced severely, and it appears as though the coaching staff has moved in a different direction. If he gets another chance, he’ll have to show enough to warrant the $2MM cap hit he carries, especially given he’ll be a restricted free agent at the end of the year. Currently, Jost looks like a potential non-tender candidate, given the threat of salary arbitration.

Jordan Greenway Won't Travel On Road Trip, Brandon Duhaime Questionable

November 13, 2022 at 12:31 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

  • Jordan Greenway has been a rarely-seen presence in the Minnesota Wild lineup this season, with injuries limiting him to just two games. After suffering yet another upper-body injury, he’s not expected to travel with the team on their one-game road trip to Nashville early this week, according to Sarah McLellan of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. He’ll miss that game and today’s home matchup against the Sharks, while Matt Boldy continues to slot in aside Marcus Foligno and Joel Eriksson Ek in Greenway’s usual spot. Brandon Duhaime, who’s missed two weeks with an upper-body injury, is a possibility for the Nashville game.

Another Setback For Jordan Greenway

November 12, 2022 at 3:01 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

After making his return to the lineup on Tuesday, Wild winger Jordan Greenway was scratched for a second straight game last night against Seattle.  Head coach Dean Evason told reporters including Dane Mizutani of the Pioneer Press that Greenway has suffered a setback that will keep him out of the lineup a little longer.  Greenway started the year injured, then was reinjured in his season debut last month, and now is banged up once more.  Fortunately, Evason clarified that this setback isn’t as serious as last time and he is skating at least.  There’s no timeline yet for when he might be able to return.

Kirill Kaprizov Avoids Suspension, Earns Fine

November 9, 2022 at 12:05 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 8 Comments

The Department of Player Safety is busy today. While they hold a hearing with Juraj Slafkovsky for his hit on Matt Luff, the league has also handed out a $5,000 fine to Kirill Kaprizov for his incident last night.

Kaprizov was ejected from a game against the Los Angeles Kings after he swung his stick down and hit Drew Doughty in the face and neck area. The league has called it “roughing” in the announcement of the fine, though last night they gave him a match penalty for intent to injure. That came with a five-minute major, a game misconduct, and an automatic review from the DoPS.

The Wild ended up losing the game 1-0 without their star forward but will have him back in the lineup this evening when they take on the Anaheim Ducks. Kaprizov has eight goals and 13 points through 12 games so far this season while the Wild struggle to stay competitive in the Central Division. The club is now 5-6-1 and has lost two in a row, falling into a tie with the Arizona Coyotes and Nashville Predators for fifth in the division.

Minnesota Wild Place Brandon Duhaime On Injured Reserve

November 8, 2022 at 8:14 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 1 Comment

The Minnesota Wild have placed Brandon Duhaime on injured reserve, according to CapFriendly. Duhaime has missed the team’s last game with an upper-body injury and did not travel on their current road trip, meaning he’ll miss at least three more games.

Entering his second NHL season, Duhaime had scored twice and added an assist through his first 10 games in 2022-23. Averaging just 9:01 per game, Duhaime is reprising his fourth-line role and continues to provide a solid energy boost to the Wild.

Duhaime was injured in a November 1 win against the Montreal Canadiens. With his IR placement retroactive to that date, he is technically eligible to be activated at any time.

His IR placement allows the Wild to convert Adam Beckman’s emergency recall into a spot on the NHL roster in earnest, as the Wild technically had 24 (out of 23 maximum) players on the active roster. Duhaime joins Ryan Hartman and Marcus Foligno on the team’s injured list.
