Injury Updates: Faulk, Thomas, Red Wings, Vaakanainen

The Blues will welcome back a key blueliner tonight against Edmonton.  Team reporter Chris Pinkert reports that Justin Faulk will return to the lineup after missing the last two games due to an upper-body injury.  The 32-year-old has been more limited than usual offensively over the first couple of months as he has just one goal and six assists so far in 25 games.  However, Faulk is carrying a big workload, averaging a team-high 23:26 per night, his highest ATOI since the shortened 2020-21 campaign.

Other injury news from around the NHL:

  • The Kings announced (Twitter link) that they’ve activated forward Akil Thomas off injured reserve. The 24-year-old had missed the last week due to an undisclosed injury.  Thomas has been limited to just ten games so far in his first full NHL season and has a goal and an assist while logging a little more than 11 minutes a night of playing time.  Los Angeles had two open roster spots so no corresponding move was needed to bring Thomas back to the active roster.
  • The Red Wings won’t have goaltenders Cam Talbot and Alex Lyon available for a little while longer. MLive’s Ansar Khan relays (Twitter link) that the netminders will likely miss the next two games as they continue to deal with lower-body injuries.  Talbot has posted an impressive .915 SV% in 15 games in his first season with Detroit while Lyon is only a few points lower at .911 in his first nine outings.  Ville Husso will continue to serve as the starter for the time being while prospect Sebastian Cossa is back with the team after being papered down on Friday for cap reasons and will serve as Husso’s backup.
  • New Rangers defenseman Urho Vaakanainen took part in the team’s optional practice today in a non-contact jersey, notes NHL.com’s Dan Rosen (Twitter link). The 25-year-old has missed more than three weeks with an upper-body injury and is still likely a few games away from being cleared to return.  Vaakanainen has played in just five games so far this season, those coming with Anaheim before being part of yesterday’s Jacob Trouba trade.

Wild Issue Multiple Injury Updates, Place Eriksson Ek On IR

12/6: According to a team announcement, the Wild have placed Eriksson Ek on injured reserve as expected. His placement on the team’s injured reserve will likely be made retroactive to December 4th.

12/4: Depth is becoming an important factor for the best team in the league. This afternoon, the Minnesota Wild issued multiple injury updates regarding the status of Joel Eriksson Ek, Jonas Brodin, Mats Zuccarello, and Jakub Lauko.

The organization confirmed the earlier report from Michael Russo of The Athletic stating that top center Eriksson Ek would be considered week-to-week with a lower-body injury. If there’s one area of weakness Minnesota could enhance via the trade market, it would be their center depth. The Wild have managed a 1-1-1 record in the three games Eriksson Ek has already missed this season and they will now have to rely on Marco Rossi as their first-line middleman.

Rossi is adequate for this role but it thins out behind him. Minnesota will deploy a rotation of Frederick Gaudreau, Marat Khusnutdinov, and Ben Jones to center the remaining three lines which isn’t typically the quality seen from first-place teams.

The Wild could gauge the trade market for a center depending on the severity of Eriksson Ek’s injury. Minnesota already swung one of the season’s biggest trades when they acquired David Jiříček from the Columbus Blue Jackets. Jake Evans of the Montreal Canadiens comes to mind as a rental piece with playoff experience that would boost Minnesota’s depth down the middle.

The remaining injury updates didn’t have any surprises. Brodin and Zuccarello are still considered week-to-week with their respective injuries while Lauko is only on a day-to-day basis. Brodin and Lauko are on the team’s injured reserve while Zuccarello and his $4.125MM salary are on the long-term injured reserve. Still, with six out of their next 10 games against opponents currently positioned for a playoff spot, the Wild’s depth will surely be tested.

Metro Notes: Zibanejad, Haula, Tatar, Engvall

The New York Rangers have made the brazen decision to scratch team captain Jacob Trouba, in anticipation of a trade or waiver placement. But the team isn’t looking to shake things up too much further, with Mollie Walker of the New York Post sharing that centerman Mika Zibanejad has yet to waive his no-movement clause. Zibanejad’s name has been side-by-side with Trouba’s in fan discussions about the team’s issues. He’s in the third year of an eight-year, $60MM contract – carrying a cap hit of $8.5MM each season. The deal features a full no-movement clause in every season, something that’s become quickly contentious as Zibanejad has struggled to make a mark off the puck this season.

To his credit, Zibanejad still has five goals and 18 points in 24 games this season. Still, that’s an 82-game pace of just 62 points – Zibanejad’s lowest scoring pace since the 2017-18 season. Four of his goals have come at even-strength, but his assists are nearly perfectly-split between five-on-five and special teams. That’s undermined Zibanejad’s role in the top-six, not helped along by a -14 showing off his defensive woes. There seemingly has to be more for the 31-year-old centerman who scored 39 goals and 91 points just two seasons ago – and who has received Selke Trophy votes in four of the last five seasons. For now, the Rangers will look to rediscover those talents internally – while they sort through a similar situation with their top defender.

  • The New Jersey Devils will see the return of both Erik Haula and Tomas Tatar on Friday, per NHL.com’s Amanda Stein. Tatar has missed the team’s last two games with a lower-body injury in the Devils’ last Friday matchup against Detroit. He logged just six shifts and three minutes of ice time before stepping away with a lower-body injury that game, but still found a way to record an assist – bringing him up to four points in his last five games. Tatar will return to the lineup with nine points in 26 games this season, operating out of New Jersey’s bottom-six. He’ll be joined in that assignment by centerman Haula, who missed practices this week with an undisclosed injury. Haula hasn’t missed any gametime, and returns to full health with five goals, 11 points, and 46 shots through 28 games this season.
  • The New York Islanders will be scratching forward Pierre Engvall on Saturday. When asked about the decision, head coach Patrick Roy told Stefen Rosner of The Hockey News, “I know Pierre is trying hard, and we are all trying hard. Right now, maybe, my expectations are higher than what he’s been showing. That’s all it is.” Engvall has been a contentious piece of the Islanders lineup. He posted a three-game scoring streak earlier in the month, but has no points and a -4 in six games since – while rotating through New York’s bottom-six. He’ll now head to the press box, creating room for Kyle MacLean and Hudson Fasching to earn more ice time.

Flyers Place Nicolas Deslauriers On IR; Jamie Drysdale, Sam Ersson Day-To-Day

The Philadelphia Flyers announced today that forward Nicolas Deslauriers has been placed on injured reserve with an upper-body injury. The move is retroactive to Deslauriers’ last game on November 9th, allowing Philadelphia to activate him as soon as he returns to full health. Deslauriers left the team’s practice on Wednesday, after re-aggravating his injury on a blocked shot. General manager Daniel Briere dubbed him as day-to-day, the same designation provided to defender Jamie Drysdale (upper-body) and goaltender Samuel Ersson (lower-body), who are both working their way back from an IR placement of their own. Both Drysdsale and Ersson have returned to Philadelphia’s practices in full. Deslauriers’ move to IR would open the necessary roster space for the Flyers to activate both Drysdale and Ersson, should they be back to game shape soon.

Deslauriers has been a routine healthy scratch this season, making it hard to distinguish between when he’s missed games due to injury versus coaching decisions. He hasn’t had any notable stat changes through his last five games – spanning from late October to November 9th – recording just one point and two shots on goal while averaging under 6 minutes of ice time a game. Even his bruiser tendencies are tapering out, with one fighting major standing as Deslauriers’ only penalty through seven games – a far cry from the 136 penalty minutes he managed in a full 2022-23 season. His return won’t shake up the Flyers’ lineup too much, but the same can’t be said about Drysdale and Ersson – who will each return to position groups much more contested than when they left.

Ersson will have the toughest battle, looking to regain ground on Ivan Fedotov and Aleksei Kolosov – who have split starts in the former’s absence. Philadelphia has improved their average goals-against per-game from 3.56 to 3.10 since Ersson suffered his injury on November 11th. They still rank in the bottom-half of the league in goals-allowed, but the improvement under their Russian and Belarussian tandem has been a welcome surprise, especially considering Ersson is the only Flyers netminder with a save percentage above .900. He sits at a .902 through 11 games this season, while Kolosov boasts a .882 in eight games, and Fedotov a .877 in 10 games. Those numbers, and Ersson’s 5-2-2 record on the season, should be enough to slot the Swede back into Philadelphia’s starting role – though the position will likely be much more of a committee after his absence.

Meanwhile, Drysdale’s absence has provided Yegor Zamula his own chance to earn a role. Zamula recorded his first goal and multi-point game of the season five games ago – with a two-point effort against Buffalo – but hasn’t managed any scoring since. Still, he’s rotated through the defense – playing as little as 13 minutes or as much as 20 minutes depending on the game. The 24-year-old sits with six points, a -10, and no penalties through 18 games this season – while averaging roughly 16 minutes of ice time per game. Those numbers are, again, not much to write home about – but they’re comparable improvements to the three points, -10, and one penalty that Drysdale recorded in 15 games before injury. He’s averaging over 20 minutes of ice time each game, and could quickly return to that role once fully healed – but Zamula’s persistence and lineup flexibility will create some tough decisions for head coach John Tortorella. Philadelphia acquired Drysdale and a 2025 second-round pick from Anaheim for top forward prospect Cutter Gauthier last season. Gauthier has followed the theatrical trade with three goals and 11 points in 24 games this season.

Nashville Predators Issue Injury Updates

The Nashville Predators will be looking for their eighth win of the season tonight without a few key players. The organization announced center Ryan O’Reilly is week-to-week with a lower-body injury and that defenseman Jeremy Lauzon has been placed on the injured reserve. The only player Nashville will receive back tonight is forward Michael McCarron, who’s been activated from the injured reserve.

It’s an insult to injury for a team that has struggled to score this season. Nashville’s first line of Filip Forsberg, O’Reilly, and Gustav Nyquist has led the team with a 55.8% xGoals% in 175 minutes and represents three of the top-six highest-scoring forwards on the roster.

O’Reilly has been a large part of that line’s success. He’s won 55.2% of nearly 500 faceoffs despite most of his draws coming in the offensive zone. He’s only managed five goals and 14 points through 26 games this season but is shooting one percentage point higher than his career average.

The Predators will try newcomer Steven Stamkos on the first line in O’Reilly’s stead. He’s not nearly as good as O’Reilly in the faceoff dot but has held his own throughout his career. The one issue that could arise is Forbserg and Stamkos are both shoot-first players which could cause some chemistry issues on the top line.

McCarron’s return reintroduces some size to the team’s fourth line. McCarron won’t help the team alleviate their goal-scoring issues as he’s only scored two goals and four points in 18 games. Still, he brings a physical presence to his game which is always useful toward the bottom of the lineup.

Lauzon’s lower-body injury strikes as an addition by subtraction for the Predators. He’s maintained his physicality this year with 103 hits in 22 games but hasn’t done much aside from that. Head coach Andrew Brunette finally separated the defensive pairing of Lauzon and Alexandre Carrier but the former still seems like he needs a reset.

Atlantic Notes: Dahlin, Samuelsson, Bobrovsky

There will be a glaring hole on the Buffalo Sabres’ blue line tonight. Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News reported earlier that defenseman Rasmus Dahlin won’t play for the Sabres tonight without adding any context regarding an injury.

Lysowski’s update was relatively vague aside from the update that Dahlin wouldn’t be in the lineup. He added a note from head coach Lindy Ruff who claimed it’s expected to be a short-term absence for the team’s best defenseman but “you never know.” It’s not exactly something that strikes confidence in the idea that Dahlin will return soon.

Buffalo’s captain has become irreplaceable for the organization as he sits third on the team in scoring with six goals and 19 points in 25 games. The Sabres will have a tough time keeping up with a surgical Winnipeg offense tonight with their best defenseman. He’s the only blue liner on the roster with an expected +/- higher than 0.

Other Atlantic notes:

  • There’s at least one positive development for Buffalo’s blue line as Lysowski also shared that defenseman Mattias Samuelsson is close to returning from his lower-body injury. It’s been nearly a month since Samuelsson last suited up for the Sabres and the team is hoping to get him a few more practices before activating him from the injured reserve. They’ll need him to be better once he does return as Samuelsson has only managed an 83.2% on-ice save percentage in all situations, far beneath his career average.
  • It’ll still be a few days before Sergei Bobrovsky returns to the Florida Panthers. Katie Engleson of Scripps Sports reported the Panthers are hopeful Bobrovsky returns on Saturday against the San Jose Sharks but they’re prepared if he can’t. He’s currently on personal leave from the team as he and his wife, Olga, recently welcomed their second child.

Oilers Notes: Hyman, Arvidsson, Stecher

Oilers goal-scorer Zach Hyman will return to the lineup tonight against the Blue Jackets after missing five games with an undisclosed injury, Tony Brar of Oilers TV reports.

Hyman will return to his usual top-line role alongside Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and take first power-play unit reps, Brar adds. The 32-year-old was having an incredibly tough time before the injury, limited to three goals and eight points in 20 games after scoring a career-high 54 goals last season.

He was shooting at just 5.9%, a trend that will surely reverse as the season progresses, given his 13.4% career average. The Oilers went 3-2-0 without Hyman in the lineup and sit fifth in the Pacific Division with a 13-10-2 record, although they could leapfrog the Flames for fourth place tonight if they win against Columbus and Calgary drops its game against the Blues.

Here’s more out of Edmonton:

  • Viktor Arvidsson has already missed nearly a month with a similarly undisclosed injury. After being listed as day-to-day for weeks, head coach Kris Knoblauch said today that he’s been downgraded to indefinite (via Brar). Knoblauch said Arvidsson’s injury “hasn’t been healing as we hoped,” not a promising proclamation for a player who only had five points in 16 games prior to getting hurt. He’s on regular injured reserve, but after missing tonight’s game, he’ll be eligible for a retroactive LTIR placement if Edmonton needs some additional short-term salary cap flexibility.
  • Defenseman Troy Stecher will be on hand against Columbus after leaving Tuesday’s loss to the Golden Knights after taking a Tomáš Hertl shot to the ear, reports Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic. The 30-year-old depth piece has three points in his last four games and has slowly become more of a regular fixture for Edmonton, last serving as a healthy scratch on Nov. 3. In 21 appearances this season, he has three assists with a -3 rating. He’s averaging 14:46 per game, and the Oilers are controlling 50% of shot attempts with him on the ice at even strength.

Red Wings Activate Patrick Kane From Injured Reserve

Dec. 5: Just two days later, the Red Wings announced that Kane has been removed from IR. He’ll return to the lineup tonight against the Senators after missing five total contests with the upper-body issue. Lagesson returned to Grand Rapids in a corresponding move.

Dec. 3: The Red Wings announced Tuesday that they’ve placed right-winger Patrick Kane on injured reserve retroactive to Nov. 23. He’s already missed four games with an upper-body injury and remains day-to-day, so he’s eligible to come off IR anytime.

Thus, his move to IR is only procedural and will only open up an additional roster spot for Detroit. Shortly before confirming Kane’s IR placement, the team said the open spot was used to recall defenseman William Lagesson from AHL Grand Rapids. The Red Wings’ active roster count remains at a maximum of 23.

The 2024-25 season has been difficult for the 36-year-old Kane, who has only three goals and seven assists for 10 points through 20 contests. The 2016 MVP and four-time All-Star is shooting at a career-low 7.5% clip and averaging a career-low 17:21 per game.

Kane’s struggles highlight a more significant issue with the Wings’ depth scoring, the lack of which is arguably the biggest reason why they remain one game below .500 and four points out of a playoff spot entering a pivotal matchup with the Atlantic Division rival Bruins tonight. He’s also been among Detroit’s worst players at controlling possession at even strength, logging a 41.9 CF% that sits 15th out of the 20 Red Wings skaters to play at least 10 games this season.

The Red Wings signed Kane to a one-year, $4MM extension in late June with up to $2.5MM in potential performance bonuses. He’s already earned $1.5MM in bonuses by hitting the 10-game mark, with an additional $250K possible if he hits 60 games. The remaining $750K can only be unlocked if Detroit makes the playoffs, which The Athletic gives just a three percent chance of happening.

Lagesson, 28, was recalled once earlier this season to serve as injury insurance on Nov. 18 against the Sharks but did not play. He was returned to Grand Rapids the following day.

After clearing waivers during training camp, Lagesson has posted two goals, three assists, five points, 14 PIMs, and a team-high +9 rating in 13 games with Grand Rapids. He has not played since Nov. 24 against Iowa after the AHL’s Player Safety Committee assessed him a three-game suspension for roughing Wild right-wing prospect Adam Raška. Lagesson has served that suspension and will be eligible to suit up for Grand Rapids again whenever the Red Wings reassign him.

As to why the Wings recalled Lagesson, he gives them an extra depth option on the blue line for their two-game divisional road swing this week. The 6’2″, 207-lb righty signed a one-year, one-way league minimum contract with Detroit in free agency over the summer after suiting up in a career-high 40 games with the Maple Leafs and Ducks last season.

Maple Leafs Notes: Hakanpää, McCabe, McMann

Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube said Thursday that defenseman Jani Hakanpää recently underwent a second minor procedure on his knee that shouldn’t keep him out of action for too much longer, per David Alter of The Hockey News.

Hakanpää, 32, has suited up only twice this season for Toronto after finalizing a one-year, $1.47MM deal late in free agency. He underwent a knee procedure early in the offseason after missing the last 13 regular-season and all 19 playoff games for the Stars, keeping him out of action until he got his season started in early November on an AHL conditioning stint.

The veteran defender, who was named to Finland’s roster for the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off yesterday, suited up in back-to-back contests for the Leafs on Nov. 13 and Nov. 16 before exiting the lineup. Toronto moved him to injured reserve on Monday to open up a roster spot, and he’s eligible to return at any time. With Berube claiming that he should start skating soon, it’s fair to anticipate a return to action before the end of the month.

The 6’6″ Hakanpää posted a -1 rating and averaged only 14:05 per game across his two appearances, adding two shots, four blocks, and one hit. The stay-at-home defender was paired with Morgan Rielly, but the duo struggled defensively, controlling only 38.1% of expected goals and allowing 3.36 expected goals per 60 minutes, per MoneyPuck.

  • Defenseman Jake McCabe will remain out of the lineup tomorrow against the Capitals, Berube told reporters, including Mark Masters of TSN. He did skate today, though, according to Masters, and Berube said he’s “feeling better” after missing the last two games with an upper-body injury. The Leafs eagerly await getting their top-four fixture back in the lineup – Philippe Myers has played spot duty alongside Rielly the past couple of games while Oliver Ekman-Larsson shifted to McCabe’s usual spot alongside Chris Tanev.
  • Winger Bobby McMann is progressing in his recovery from his lower-body injury but won’t play in Toronto’s remaining two games this week. Berube told reporters that “he could hopefully be an option for next week” if he starts skating the next couple of days (via Masters). The 28-year-old has missed the last three contests after sustaining the injury on Nov. 27 against the Panthers. The late-blooming forward has been productive when in the lineup, scoring six goals in 21 games while averaging a career-high 14:01 per game.

Lightning Notes: Paul, Kucherov, Chaffee

Lightning center Nick Paul will be available for tonight’s home game against the Sharks after missing the last six games with an undisclosed injury, head coach Jon Cooper told Gabby Shirley of FanDuel Sports Network Florida & Sun.

Paul was listed as week-to-week late last month but never landed on injured reserve. The 29-year-old is expected to shift to the wing on a line with Brandon Hagel and Anthony Cirelli in his return to the lineup while the Bolts dress 11 forwards and seven defensemen, barring any last-minute recalls.

It was a banner start to the season for Paul, now in his third full campaign with Tampa after they acquired him from the Senators before the 2022 trade deadline. He had five goals and eight assists for 13 points through 17 games, so far shattering his previous career-best points per game rate of 0.56 set last season.

Paul has, however, been less involved physically, with 0.29 blocks per game and 1.12 hits per game compared to 0.51 and 1.27 last season. He’s now in the third year of the seven-year, $22.05MM extension he signed in 2022.

More out of Tampa:

  • Paul draws into the top six in part due to an undisclosed injury to star winger Nikita Kucherov, who Cooper said won’t play versus San Jose but could return against the Canucks this weekend. It’s the second game in a row that the 31-year-old will miss with the injury, which he sustained last Friday against the Predators. The five-time All-Star has 34 points in 22 contests this season, ranking fourth in the league with 1.55 points per game. The injury marks his first multi-game absence since missing three games with COVID-19 in the 2021-22 campaign.
  • Cooper said the Bolts would also be without Mitchell Chaffee’s services up front. The 26-year-old winger will miss his fourth straight game with an undisclosed injury but remains day-to-day. He’d been a quality depth piece in the early going, already recording career-highs in goals (five) and points (nine) in 20 games while averaging 13:04 per game. The Michigan native is also tied for sixth on the team with 25 hits.
