Avalanche Sign Calum Ritchie To Entry-Level Deal

The Colorado Avalanche may have found an answer to their lack of depth up front as they’ve announced a three-year, entry-level contract with forward Calum Ritchie. The deal carries a cap hit of $950K and an AAV of $1.19MM including bonuses, per PuckPedia. The organization selected Ritchie as the 27th overall pick of the 2023 NHL Draft with their highest selection since the 2020 NHL Draft.

During his draft year, the assistant captain for the Oshawa Generals of the OHL scored 24 goals and 59 points in 59 games while collecting another two goals and six points in five postseason contests. Ritchie also performed markedly well during the under-18 World Junior Championship on Team Canada as he scored three goals and nine points in seven tournament games en route to a gold medal.

While retaining the ’A’ on his jersey for the 2023-24 OHL campaign, Ritchie took a big step forward offensively. After missing the first 17 games of the season due to a shoulder injury the young forward rebounded with 28 goals and 80 points in 50 games. He was also one of the best players in the postseason for Oshawa as he scored eight goals and 30 points in 21 games but ultimately failed to help his team get past the London Knights in the OHL Finals.

The biggest asset in Ritchie’s game, which may allow him to crack Colorado’s roster out of training camp, is his ability to play off the puck. The Avalanche have several players able to drive singularly drive the play on their roster and Ritchie could act as a solid complimentary piece to those players. He also carries a physical edge to his game which Colorado has been looking for from their forwards for the last several years.

NL’s EV Zug Signs Fredrik Olofsson

July 8: It took a while, but Olofsson is indeed heading to Zug. It’s a two-year deal, the team announced.

March 21: After two seasons in the NHL and AHL, Avalanche forward Fredrik Olofsson’s time stateside may be coming to an end. The pending UFA has been linked to EV Zug of the Swiss National League on the open market this summer, Johan Svensson of the Swedish publication Expressen reports. Notably, it appears the Swedish forward won’t be returning to SHL club IK Oskarshamn, where he spent two seasons prior to signing as a free agent with the Stars in 2022.

Olofsson, 27, was a fourth-round pick of the Blackhawks in 2014. However, after a post-draft season in major junior play with the USHL’s Chicago Steel and a four-year career with the University of Nebraska-Omaha, he was not signed to an NHL contract and became a free agent when his exclusive signing rights expired in the summer of 2019. He headed back home to Sweden for the first time in his career, having played all of his youth hockey in the United States, and signed a one-year deal with MODO Hockey, then of the second-tier HockeyAllsvenskan. After impressing with 34 points and a +15 rating in 52 games, he garnered interest from teams in Sweden’s top division and landed with Oskarshamn in 2020.

The 6-foot-2 forward was a natural fit there, recording 42 points in 49 games during the 2021-22 campaign and generating NHL interest as a result. Dallas landed him after his SHL season ended, inking him to a one-year, one-way contract in May 2022. He didn’t crack the team out of camp but ended up getting significant NHL time nonetheless, recording a goal and three assists in 28 games while playing fourth-line minutes. Injuries and suspensions meant Olofsson had a chance to play in a handful of postseason contests, too, playing twice in the Stars’ Western Conference Final loss to the Golden Knights.

Olofsson was looking for more NHL opportunities than that, however. With Dallas unlikely to re-sign him, they traded his signing rights to the Avalanche last June in exchange for future considerations. He immediately inked a one-year (and, surprisingly, two-way) contract with the Avs, who were facing a heavy amount of turnover among their depth forwards.

As a result, Olofsson cracked the squad out of camp during his second NHL try. He spent most of this season centering Colorado’s fourth line but hasn’t been much of a factor, recording nine points, a -5 rating, an abysmal 39.7 FO%, and subpar possession metrics in heavy defensive usage while averaging only 9:45 per game. He hasn’t avoided minor-league assignments, either, as Colorado placed him on waivers and assigned him to AHL Colorado in late February. The team recalled him under emergency conditions shortly after the trade deadline, with injuries sidelining multiple depth forwards such as Zach Parise and Chris Wagner, but he was returned to the minors after a five-day stint with the Avs.

Now back with the Eagles, where he has six points and a +8 rating in eight games, it seems likely Olofsson will head back to Europe for increased ice time and responsibility, even if a deal with Zug falls through. If the report comes to fruition, though, Olofsson would be joining one of the top teams in Switzerland – Zug won back-to-back championships in 2021 and 2022 and has made the NL championship series four times since 2017. The club is currently tied 1-1 in their first-round series against SC Bern as the NL postseason began earlier this week. The team boasts only a handful of players with NHL experience, though – only former Blue Jackets winger Gregory Hofmann, former Devils center Brian O’Neill, and former Canucks winger Marc Michaelis, who all combine to only 61 games.

Colorado Avalanche Re-Sign Jason Polin

Keeping a bit of internal depth through the system, the Colorado Avalanche have agreed to terms on a one-year contract with forward Jason Polin. As an undrafted free agent, Polin signed a one-year, entry-level contract with the Avalanche in late March of 2023.

It is difficult to say anything other than ’subpar’ regarding Polin’s first full season within the Avalanche organization. This past season Polin dressed in 42 games for the team’s AHL affiliate, the Colorado Eagles, where he only mustered four goals and 10 points overall. Colorado hoped for much more production coming from Polin considering his collegiate career at Western Michigan University.

Polin spent four years for the Broncos and was named team captain before the 2022-23 NCAA season. In 39 games that season, Polin potted a whopping 30 goals and 47 points while collecting five hat tricks throughout the year. Polin tied the would-be third overall pick of that year’s draft, Adam Fantilli, in goals across the entire NCAA. Adding to his resume; Polin set an NCHC record for goals scored during the regular season and was named NCHC Player of the Year and NCHC Forward of the Year while finishing top-10 in Hobey Baker Award voting.

Polin has already collected seven games at the NHL level with the Avalanche in which he has scored one goal. With Colorado being desperate for cheap depth at the forward position, they may give Polin another chance in the NHL. However, if he cannot produce similarly to his playing days in the NCAA, his time with the Avalanche organization may only last another season.

Avalanche Sign Erik Brännström, Wyatt Aamodt

3:00 p.m.: The Avs have also brought back defenseman Wyatt Aamodt on a one-year deal with an undisclosed cap hit. Aamodt, an RFA, had 14 points in 60 games with the AHL’s Colorado Eagles last year. The 26-year-old returns for his third full season in the Colorado organization.

1:00 p.m.: Colorado has made the deal official.

11:54 a.m.: The Avalanche have come to terms on a one-year, $900K deal with UFA defenseman Erik Brännström, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports. Canucks freelance reporter Irfaan Gafaar said earlier Tuesday that there was traction between the Avs and Brännström on a deal.

Brännström, 24, became a UFA yesterday after being non-tendered by the Senators. It wasn’t unexpected. Ottawa has never fully placed their trust in the 2017 first-round pick, who they acquired from the Golden Knights as the centerpiece of the trade return for Mark Stone in 2019.

The Swede has spent parts of the last six seasons in Ottawa but didn’t truly catch on as a full-time piece until 2022-23. Since doing so, he’s been an exemplary bottom-pair defender, posting 38 points and a +10 rating in 150 games over the last two years. He’s also posted decent possession numbers, controlling 50% of shot attempts and 52.1% of expected goals at even strength last year.

The Sens didn’t use that strong play as evidence to try him higher up in the lineup, though, and his ice time stayed low at around 16 minutes per game. The one time Ottawa did insert Brännström into somewhat consistent top-four minutes in the 2021-22 campaign, he struggled with 14 assists and a -17 rating in 53 contests while averaging 19:46 per game.

Brännström won’t be tasked with a ton of responsibility in Colorado, though. Their top four is already set with Samuel Girard, Cale Makar, Josh Manson and Devon Toews. Instead, he’ll likely start the season in a consistent bottom-pairing role with either journeyman Calvin de Haan, who the Avs signed yesterday, or third-year pro Sam Malinski on his flank.

He’ll provide solid puck-moving depth and is a much cheaper replacement for deadline pickup Sean Walker, who signed a five-year, $18MM deal with the Hurricanes yesterday. At $900K, Brännström’s deal can be fully buried in the minors if he flames out, but he would need to pass through waivers to head to the AHL.

It’s a good pickup for an Avalanche team that is already projected to be over the salary cap upon the return of Gabriel Landeskog from injury and Valeri Nichushkin from suspension next season. They’ll need players on sub-$1MM cap hits to contribute as much as possible, and there were arguably no higher-upside bets available for that price after yesterday’s moves than Brännström.

Avalanche Sign Parker Kelly To Two-Year Contract

The Avalanche have signed depth forward Parker Kelly to a two-year contract, per a team announcement. The deal is worth $1.65MM ($825K AAV), Daily Faceoff’s Frank Seravalli reports.

Kelly, 25, became a UFA today after not receiving a qualifying offer from the Senators. Ottawa is where he’d spent the first seven years of his career after signing as an undrafted free agent in 2017, slowly developing into an NHL regular over that time. Last season, he played in a career-high 80 games, notching eight goals and 18 points while proving himself as serviceable bottom-six depth.

A winger by trade, Kelly averaged 11:42 per game this year and put up passable possession numbers for his fourth-line minutes. The 6’0″, 190-lb forward lays the body well, recording over 170 hits in each of his last two seasons.

He’ll fit right into Colorado as a cheaper replacement for Brandon Duhaime, who signed a seven-figure AAV deal with the Capitals earlier today. And, solely based on last season’s results, he’s an upgrade both offensively and defensively. Kelly has a strong shot to begin the season on the Avs’ fourth line and will compete for playing time with players like rookie Nikolai Kovalenko and veterans Joel Kiviranta and Chris Wagner, the former of whom was brought back on a one-year deal today.

For less than a $1MM cap hit, it’s a tad puzzling why the Sens opted not to qualify him and retain his rights, especially when they signed his likely replacement, Noah Gregor, for $25K more against the cap. Kelly will happily take his services to Denver, where he provides the Avs with some much-needed cost-effective depth and gets a bit of security in the process with a two-year term. He’ll be a UFA upon expiry in 2026.

Avalanche Sign Joel Kiviranta, Calvin De Haan, Jacob MacDonald, Chase Bradley

The Avalanche are re-signing Joel Kiviranta to a one-year deal, per a team announcement. They’ve also agreed to terms with UFA defenseman Calvin de Haan on an undisclosed deal, Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch reports. Per The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta, de Haan’s deal is worth $800K. Additionally, they’ve brought defenseman/winger Jacob MacDonald back into the organization on a two-year, two-way deal worth $775K NHL/$525K AHL each season, per PuckPedia.

They’ve also signed forward Chase Bradley to a two-year, entry-level deal with an $872.5K cap hit, per PuckPedia. Bradley, 22, was a 2020 seventh-round pick of the Red Wings but became a free agent earlier today after leaving his school with one year remaining of eligibility, something he was eligible to do since it has been four years since he was drafted.

Kiviranta joined Colorado last season, inking a one-year deal in mid-November after playing with the Eagles before that.  The 28-year-old played in 56 games, primarily on their fourth line where he picked up three goals, six assists, and 78 hits in a little under nine minutes per game.  He suited up in eight playoff contests, recording a goal and an assist in just under 12 minutes per contest.  He’ll have a shot to battle for a fourth-line spot again with the Avs next season.

As for de Haan, he’s joining his fourth team in as many years.  The 33-year-old had a depth role with Tampa Bay last season, playing in 59 games with the Lightning.  He picked up 10 points along with 82 blocks and 96 hits along the way while averaging 16:38 per game, up by more than three minutes a night compared to his average the year before with Carolina.  At the moment, de Haan projects to have more of a regular role with Colorado but that could change depending on what other depth options are brought in.

MacDonald, meanwhile, spent parts of five seasons between the Avalanche and Eagles before being moved to San Jose in January 2023.  The 31-year-old spent last season with the Sharks but battled multiple injuries which helped limit him to just 34 games where he had seven goals and two assists in just over 12 minutes a game.  He also cleared waivers back in February, resulting in six AHL appearances with the Barracuda before being recalled at the trade deadline for the rest of the season.  He could be in the mix for a depth spot on the back end as things stand.

As for Bradley, he spent the last three years at the University of Connecticut, setting new personal bests with 11 goals and 11 assists in 31 games.  A report from April suggested he didn’t want to sign with Detroit and instead wanted to test free agency; he didn’t waste much time finding a new home as Colorado adds to their prospect pool with his signing.

Avalanche Re-Sign Jonathan Drouin

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reports the Colorado Avalanche have signed forward Jonathan Drouin to a one-year contract. A few moments later, Pierre LeBrun confirmed it would be a one-year deal for Drouin and Colorado with a salary of $2.5MM.

Although Drouin’s departure looked inevitable due to a dismal cap situation in Colorado, the two sides worked out an agreement even after Drouin was allowed to negotiate with other clubs. Drouin’s salary for the 2024-25 season is more than a 300% raise on his previous contract — and it still looks like a bargain for the Avalanche.

After falling out of the picture in Montreal, Drouin signed in Colorado on a one-year, $825K deal last summer to reunite with former Halifax teammate, Nathan MacKinnon. Turning out to be on one of the most valuable contracts in the league, Drouin rewarded the Avalanche’s confidence with 19 goals and 56 points during the 2023-24 regular season. Drouin missed a considerable amount of time in Colorado’s run through the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs but still managed to tally three assists in three games.

Drouin will have even more responsibility for the Avalanche this season as the team waits on the status of Valeri Nichushkin and Gabriel Landeskog. Nevertheless, he should find a home in the team’s top six and may even log the most minutes next to MacKinnon. If the team is content with Drouin next to their top talent, it could allow them to move Mikko Rantanen around the lineup to boost the other lines.

Avalanche May Not Have Space To Re-Sign Jonathan Drouin

  • Despite both parties’ willingness to agree on a contract extension, the cap situation for the Colorado Avalanche may be pushing Jonathan Drouin out the door (Article Link). For the second summer in a row, the Avalanche are scrambling to sign cheap depth at every position with the team only carrying $10.47MM in cap space into the summer months. Without factoring in the potential return of forward Valeri Nichushkin and his $6.125MM salary, it appears improbable that Colorado will be able to retain Drouin. After only playing on an $825K salary for the 2023-24 NHL season, Drouin has earned a considerable raise after scoring 19 goals and 56 points in 79 games.

Utah Hockey Club Acquires 24th Overall Pick From Colorado

The Utah Hockey Club has acquired the 24th overall pick of the 2024 NHL Draft from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for the 38th and 71st overall picks, as well as a second-round selection in the 2025 NHL Draft (X Link).

Using the pick, Utah selected Cole Beaudoin from the Barrie Colts in the Ontario Hockey League. By moving three draft picks to the Avalanche, Utah gained the ability to make their second selection of the day while Colorado trades out of the first round entirely.

Beaudoin took a big step forward in his second season with the Colts as the young forward scored 28 goals and 62 points in 67 games after scoring eight goals and 20 points a year before. Long-term, Beaudoin has the playstyle of a third-line forward but has the creativity to be an effective middle-six option at the NHL level. He carries a high motor and is never hesitant to engage in battles anywhere on the ice.

It is a bit surprising to see the Avalanche trade out of the first round, as the team is desperate for cheap NHL-ready talent. It is unlikely that Colorado could have found a player to immediately step into the lineup at this point in the first round, but it is apparent the team is looking for quantity over quality in this year’s draft. Because of the trade, Colorado will have to wait until tomorrow to make their first selection of the 2024 NHL Draft.
