Hagg's Lower-Body Injury Had Been Lingering All Season, Tokarski Returns To Practice
The lower-body injury that has kept Sabres defenseman Robert Hagg out for nearly a month was one that had been lingering for most of the season, notes Lance Lysowski of The Buffalo News. The 26-year-old still leads the team in blocks (56) and has the most hits among blueliners (49) despite missing nine games and playing through the injury for most of the year. He’s set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer so a return to health – he has been skating in recent days and should return soon – could certainly boost his stock both in terms of contract value and what Buffalo could get in a trade for him as a rental player.
Sabres Activate Three From COVID Protocol
- The Sabres got some good news on the COVID protocol front today as the team announced (Twitter link) prior to their game against San Jose that centers Dylan Cozens, Zemgus Girgensons, and Mark Jankowski were all cleared to return. The trio last played on December 17th and each missed three games.
Robert Hagg Returns To Practice
- The Buffalo Sabres have been without defenseman Robert Hagg since mid-December, but he could be close to returning. The Athletic’s John Vogl reports that he took part in practice with his teammates today, his first time doing so since suffering a lower-body injury on December 14. Acquired from Philadelphia this offseason, Hagg has five points in 25 games.
Krebs, Tuch, Bjork Enter COVID Protocol
So much for the Jack Eichel trade already paying off for the Buffalo Sabres. Just a few days after making their Buffalo debuts, Peyton Krebs and Alex Tuch have both been placed in the COVID protocol. Anders Bjork has entered with them.
Krebs and Tuch managed just three games with the Sabres since their recent activation with the two connecting on a powerplay marker in Saturday’s game against the Boston Bruins. They represent the biggest parts of the Eichel trade that went down earlier this season and a huge chunk of the team’s future moving forward.
Bjork too is a regular with the Sabres, though his five points in 29 games are certainly not what the team was hoping for this season. The 25-year-old forward had six in 13 games down the stretch for Buffalo last season but has seen his minutes slashed dramatically and his role on the team diminished.
With Kyle Okposo and Casey Fitzgerald already on the protocol, the Sabres are now severely shorthanded as they wait for the San Jose Sharks to come to town on Thursday. Luckily, the team isn’t scheduled to play again after that game until January 11, meaning several of these players could exit the protocol if they are experiencing no symptoms.
Kyle Okposo, Casey Fitzgerald Enter COVID Protocol
Despite being on the ice to start Buffalo Sabres practice, Kyle Okposo has now entered the COVID protocol. He will not be alone, however, as Casey Fitzgerald will also enter the protocol.
It’s terrible timing for Okposo, who has rejuvenated his career this season playing under Don Granato. The 33-year-old forward has 21 points in 33 games, a total that has already surpassed his numbers from each of the last two seasons. In fact, Okposo hasn’t cracked the 30-point mark in a season since 2017-18, something he should easily do by the end of the year.
For now, if he tested positive he’ll be out for at least the next several days meaning in all likelihood he’ll miss Thursday’s match against the San Jose Sharks.
Jacob Bryson Enters COVID Protocol
The Buffalo Sabres have made a few transactions today after Jacob Bryson entered the COVID protocol. The team has recalled Casey Fitzgerald to the active roster while moving Ethan Prow up to the taxi squad. (UPDATE: Prow has been recalled from the taxi squad ahead of the game, while Alex Tuch was activated from injured reserve)
Bryson joins Vinnie Hinostroza, Zemgus Girgensons, Jeff Skinner, Mark Jankowski, Dylan Cozens, and head coach Don Granato in the protocol, who will all be unavailable for tonight’s game against the New Jersey Devils. Like any team trying to play through a COVID outbreak, it will drastically limit the depth available for the Sabres as they restart their season.
Bryson, 24, has played in 29 games for the Sabres this season, quietly establishing himself as a reliable option for the team on defense. The undersized skater is averaging almost 20 minutes a night and has seven points in those 29 games.
Notably, Fitzgerald will be playing in front of a familiar face tonight as the Sabres take on the Devils. Tom Fitzgerald was in the crowd as a supportive father for Casey’s NHL debut earlier this season but will now watch as the general manager of the opponent. Tom played nearly 1,100 games in the NHL–Casey’s working on number 2.
Buffalo Sabres Recall Three Players
Play the kids! The Buffalo Sabres have made some interesting recalls today, bringing up Peyton Krebs, JJ Peterka, and Arttu Ruotsalainen. With several players in the COVID protocol and the Sabres set to resume their season tomorrow night, the young prospects could get a chance to show what they can do at the NHL level.
Coincidentally, this means that Krebs will likely make his Sabres debut in the same game as Alex Tuch, who has recovered from injury and will be in the lineup tomorrow night. The pair of forwards came to Buffalo in exchange for Jack Eichel last month (along with draft picks) and will be under the microscope as they make their debuts. While Tuch has been rehabbing, Krebs has been lighting it up at the AHL level, scoring 14 points in 16 games with the Rochester Americans. The 17th overall pick in 2019, Krebs is potentially a long-term option for the Sabres down the middle of the ice.
Peterka meanwhile has been wowing Rochester fans all season, scoring 20 points in 23 games as an AHL rookie. The 19-year-old forward was the 34th overall pick in 2020 and is in his first season in North America. Notably, he could be playing for Germany at the World Juniors right now but was left off the roster to continue his development in the Sabres system, as he’d already competed in the tournament twice previously. It has proved to be a good decision as it looks like he’ll get his NHL debut a few weeks ahead of his 20th birthday.
Ruotsalainen, 24, has been in the Sabres system for two years now after signing as an undrafted European free agent in 2019 and coming over to North America last season. In 33 games at the NHL level he has seven goals and 10 points, impressing whenever given regular offensive playing time. The 5’9″ forward doesn’t exactly come with the same kind of excitement that Krebs and Peterka bring, but could still help the Sabres fill out the lineup in the coming days and weeks.
Sabres Place Three In COVID Protocol
The Sabres have announced that head coach Don Granato along with center Dylan Cozens and Mark Jankowski have all been placed in COVID protocol. They added that all three are currently asymptomatic although under the current NHL protocols, all three will miss at least the next three days.
Cozens is off to a good start to his sophomore season, collecting eight goals and seven assists in 30 games, good for sixth in scoring on the Sabres. Meanwhile, Jankowski was recently converted to an NHL contract and had played in four games since then, picking up an assist while logging nearly 13 minutes a night in ice time. The two join Zemgus Girgensons and Vinnie Hinostroza as those that are currently unavailable while Granato is one of eight head coaches currently in COVID protocol.
Buffalo is currently slated to return to the ice on Wednesday against New Jersey unless there are further changes made to the schedule with a decision on that front expected later today.
2022 WJC Participants By NHL Team
The 2022 World Junior Championships will get underway from Edmonton and Red Deer, Alberta on Sunday. As is the norm and to be expected from the top U-20 competition in the world, the World Junior tournament field is loaded with drafted NHL talent. While most nations don’t have the prospect depth to form a roster completely composed of NHL prospects and those that do have opted to include some younger, future draft picks, there are still a whopping 106 drafted players on WJC rosters. Nine of ten WJC have at least one current NHL prospect and six of those nine have at least ten draft picks. Those players come from 30 of the NHL’s 32 teams, with the Carolina Hurricanes leading the way with ten prospects. Kevyn Adams: Craig Anderson Will Return This Season
- Sabres goaltender Craig Anderson is making progress as he works his way back from his upper-body injury with GM Kevyn Adams expressing optimism that he’d be back this season, relays Mike Harrington of The Buffalo News. Harrington notes that the injury is believed to be a head or neck issue which would help explain the uncertain timeline; he started off as day-to-day before being re-classified as month-to-month. Anderson was off to a nice start before the injury, posting a 2.50 GAA with .921 SV% in his first six starts.
