Minor Transactions: 12/24/20

’Twas the month before hockey and all over the Earth,
Fans are excited for a new season’s birth;
There was quite a delay to the new league year,
’Til the NHL announced that it was practically here;
Of course, before we get started in just a few weeks,
Rosters are in need of numerous tweaks;
And as teams maneuver a salary cap squeeze,
Free agents also continue to find work overseas;
So stay tuned for some moves before the return to play;
From the NHL to KHL to NCAA;
Here are the minor transactions that were made today:

  • Free agent goaltender Ivan Nalimov has decided to remain in Europe for another season. The Chicago Blackhawks prospect, if you can still call him that at 26 years old, has previously expressed an interest in making the jump to North America. In fact, at one point he had requested that Chicago trade his rights to a team willing to give him an opportunity. Yet, for whatever reason, Nalimov will stay in the KHL for another year, signing a one-year contract with Dinamo Riga. The Blackhawks own Nalimov’s NHL rights in perpetuity, but if they weren’t willing to give him a chance this season without much talent and experience in net themselves, it seems unlikely that the two sides will ever get together.
  • The New Jersey Devils are on a more strict timeline to make a decision on prospect forward Nikita Popugaev. The 2017 fourth-round pick, whose skill is clear but whose work ethic is suspect, spent last season on an AHL contract with the Binghamton Devils but played exclusively in the ECHL with the Adirondack Thunder. He returned to Russia this off-season and signed with the KHL’s Dinamo Moscow. However, after a brief demotion, he has now been traded to Neftekhimik Nizhnekamsk, the team announced. The Devils have until June 1st to decide if they want to sign Popugaev or lose his rights and a change of scenery mid-season won’t make that evaluation any easier.
  • The Edmonton Oilers face a similar situation with forward Bogdan Yakimov. Yakimov, a 2013 third-round pick, spent parts of two season in the Oilers’ organization shortly after being drafted, but only saw one NHL game. He has spent the past five seasons, including this year, back in the KHL. His current contract expires at the end of this season and his NHL rights expire on his 27th birthday in October, so both sides have limited time to decide if they are interested in a second chance. Potentially helping the cause is Yakimov’s inability to stay put in the KHL. For the second time already this year, Yakimov has been traded, as HK Sochi announced that they have acquired Yakimov from SKA St. Petersburg, who had only added him in a deal with Severstal Cherepovets in May. Yakimov’s size and two-way focus may be better appreciated back in North America and the promise of some consistency, even if that comes in Bakersfield instead of Edmonton, may appeal to the veteran center.
  • The University of Minnesota has gained a major commitment in U.S. National Team Development Program defenseman Ryan Chesley. The U-17 standout announced that he will join the Gophers when he begins his NCAA career. A 2022 NHL Draft prospect, Chesley still has another year with the USNTDP to go before he likely enrolls at Minnesota. In that time, his prospect stock could continue to climb; the 16-year-old is a right-shot defenseman with decent size scoring at better than a point-per-game pace this year, checking a number of major boxes for NHL scouts.

There has been a flurry of NHL action of late with a number of UFA signings and RFA extensions, among other moves. However, it doesn’t stop there. Between loan recalls, overseas contracts, and college commitments, it has been another busy day for minor moves as the NHL inches closer to joining the other leagues worldwide currently enjoying the 2020-21 season.

  • The San Jose Sharks have recalled goaltender Josef Korenar from his loan to HC Ocelari Trinec, the Czech club announced. The 22-year-old keeper had a down season in 2019-20 after excelling as an AHL rookie the year before, but his play could be trending up after posting an 8-2 record and strong numbers in the Czech Extraliga. With an uninspiring veteran duo of Martin Jones and Devan Dubnyk ahead of him, it would not be a surprise to see the Sharks call on Korenar to make his NHL debut this season, especially if he can return to form.
  • The Boston Bruins have also made a loan recall, bringing back forward Robert Lantosi from HK Nitra of the Slovakian Extraliga, according to the team. While Lantosi may not seem like a top AHL option for the Bruins, he continues to impress with every opportunity. The 25-year-old played with the Providence Bruins on a minor league deal last season but earned an entry-level contract with 31 points in 50 games. He followed that up with a point-per-game pace through 18 games with Nitra on loan. Especially with the taxi squad as a new option, Lantosi could be a dark horse candidate to debut with the Bruins this season.
  • Even as the free agent market starts to pick back up, some North American players are still signing overseas in order to get their season started instead of waiting and hoping for an NHL contract. Netminder Jared Coreau has joined that list, signing a one-year deal with the IceHL’s Bratislava Capitals, per a team announcement. The former Detroit Red Wings prospect has bounced around the AHL over the past few years without much in the way of results, leading to move overseas in hopes of rediscovering his game.
  • Veteran forward Lance Bouma is in the same boat. After spending last season with the AHL’s Ontario Reign, Bouma is heading back to Europe, this time signing with the SHL’s IK Oskarshamn, the team announced. After seven seasons with the Calgary Flames, including four as a regular player, and another with the Chicago Blackhawks, Bouma has been out of the NHL since 2017-18 and hopes a strong season in Sweden may get him back on the radar.
  • Tristan Mullin, formerly a top scorer for Cornell University, has finalized his transfer to the University of Vermont and will join the team in the spring semester, according to insider Mark Divver. The senior forward has recorded 20+ points in back-to-back seasons and with pro size and speed could draw NHL interest.
  • Max Smolinski, son of former NHLer Bryan Smolinski, has committed to play his college hockey at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, he announced today. The young puck-moving defenseman is expected to join RPI for the 2022-23 season. Smolinski is 2021 NHL Draft-eligible and hopes to impress scouts in his first season with the USHL’s Lincoln Stars.

Anaheim Ducks Re-Sign Ryan Miller

As many expected, the Anaheim Ducks have come to terms on a new contract with veteran goaltender Ryan Miller. CapFriendly reports that the 40-year-old has signed a one-year extension to stay with Anaheim, very likely for the final season of his long, successful career. The contract carries a $1MM AAV, all in guaranteed base salary.

All signs pointed to one final year of Miller in Anaheim, but the two sides sure took their time getting there. After the goalie market thinned quickly when free agency began in October, the Ducks were left with very few legitimate options to solidify a depth chart in net that featured only Anthony Stolarz and a trio of untested prospects behind starter John Gibson. Miller remained unsigned, but this was at least partially due to his unwillingness to move far from his family in southern California. With Arizona, L.A., Vegas, and San Jose all appearing set in net, it seemed like a reunion with Anaheim was the only real option for Miller to extend his career.

Miller had earned another shot if he wanted one, too. Even in his 17th NHL season, Miller still managed to record a winning record for a poor Ducks team in 23 appearances last year. Admittedly, his .907 save percentage and 3.10 GAA were career lows, but they were still superior to the numbers of the other options left on the market. If Gibson can stay healthy, he is an elite, workhorse goalie that Anaheim can lean on and Stolarz is capable of contributing as well, meaning Miller will not be asked to do too much in his first (and likely last) season in his forties, but if the Ducks need a spot start they can rely on the experience and veteran IQ that Miller brings.

While the Ducks are improved this season with the addition of Miller, they are still facing a conundrum in net with the 2021 NHL Expansion Draft on the horizon. The Ducks need an eligible goaltender signed beyond this season to expose in the draft, but right now only Gibson fits the bill and he certainly won’t be the choice. This one-year deal for Miller, while completely reasonable, does not help the situation. His presence may also block Stolarz from the opportunities needed to prove whether he is worthy of an extension. Miller himself seems unlikely to sign another deal simply for the purpose of being exposed in the draft as well. One way or another, Anaheim will need to sign an eligible goalie, internal or otherwise, to a contract through at least 2021-22 before July’s draft.

Minor Transactions: 12/21/20

The countdown has begun to the start of the NHL season and as expected there is no shortage of moves being made in response. Combine a slew of recalls from loans with the usual moves from the junior, collegiate, and European levels and there was plenty going on across the hockey world on Monday:

  • The Chicago Blackhawks have recalled Pius Suter from Switzerland’s ZSC Lions, the club announced. Suter was signed as a free agent by the Blackhawks this summer after a career year in the NLA. The Swiss forward stayed home when the NHL season was delayed but is finally ready to make his move to Chicago to show that he has what it takes to play in the NHL. The Blackhawks also recalled Swiss prospect Philipp Kurashev from the NLA’s HC Lugano. Kurashev played well in his first AHL season, but Chicago hopes the dynamic forward can take another step forward this year.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled a recent free agent addition of their own in Radim Zohorna. The big power forward had returned to his Czech club, BK Mlada Boleslav, while awaiting the NHL season but will now report to Penguins camp, the team announced. Zohorna faces an uphill battle to crack the NHL roster but the Penguins are excited to see what he can do in the AHL.
  • After returning to his former KHL club Dinamo Minsk on loan, Yegor Sharangovich has been recalled by the New Jersey Devils, the team announced. The young forward has played well in the AHL over the past two seasons, but took his game to a new level during his brief stay in Belarus. The Devils hope that is the game that will show up in training camp and at whichever level Sharangovich ends up this season.
  • Goaltender Jacob Ingham’s stint in the ECHL didn’t last long, as the league’s transactions indicate that he has been recalled by the Los Angeles Kings after two games with the Greenville Swamp Rabbits. Ingham didn’t exactly impress in the minors either, but he is still a top prospect who will look to impress in training camp and win the top role in the AHL this season.
  • Forward Max Veronneau will not be among the second wave of NHL free agent signings. After just one season in the NHL with the Ottawa Senators and Toronto Maple Leafs, the Princeton product has signed in Sweden. The SHL’s IK Oskarshamn has announced a one-year deal with the skilled forward, who seemingly feels he has a better chance of impressing future NHL suitors overseas than with a season in the AHL.
  • QMJHL standout Nathan Legare, a prospect of the Pittsburgh Penguins, is on the move. On the first day that the QMJHL has re-opened trading, Baie-Comeau Drakkar has traded their captain and last season’s leading scorer to the Val-d’Or Foreurs. It’s a hefty return for the prized prospect: a future first-, third-, and a trio of fourth-round picks, as well as rookie forward Justin Sullivan. 
  • The fallout of the Ivy League’s cancelled winter season extends beyond just this year. Ivy League schools do not use graduate student-athletes, meaning current seniors missing their seasons cannot use their fifth and final year of NCAA eligibility at their current schools. UMass has reaped the benefits with a pair of additions today, as Cornell’s Cam Donaldson and Dartmouth’s Matthew Baker have committed to transferring to Amherst next year, reports Jeff Cox of the New England Hockey Journal.

Flames’ Jake Boltmann Commits To Notre Dame, To Join Team This Season

One of the most recent additions to the Calgary Flames’ pipeline has made a decision on the next step in his development, one that he plans to act on immediately. Defenseman Jake Boltmann, a third round pick in the 2020 NHL Draft, has announced his commitment to the University of Notre Dame. The Lincoln Stars standout is expected to enroll for the spring semester and join the Fighting Irish in the coming weeks.

Boltmann, 19, is a Minnesota high school star who had initially committed to the University of Minnesota many years ago. After opting not to join the Gophers for the fall semester, Boltmann officially de-committed recently. He will now make his move to South Bend, joining a Notre Dame program that also recruited him heavily alongside Minnesota.

Boltmann became somewhat of a viral sensation when video emerged of the young defender finding out he had been drafted in the middle of practice, much to the excitement of his Lincoln teammates and coaches. Boltmann has now wrapped up his time with the Stars and is ready to join the Irish. The dependable defenseman will bring his strong defensive game to a team that already boasts considerable NHL prospect depth. The current group includes Boltmann’s fellow 2020 picks Landon Slaggert (CHI) and Ryder Rolston (COL) while the 2021 recruiting class includes first round hopeful Sasha Pastujov. The Flames hope that Boltmann can quickly establish himself as one of the top defenseman for Notre Dame, a team that should compete for NCAA titles during his tenure.

NHL, NHLPA Finalize Agreement On 56-Game Season

Sunday: The NHL Board of Governors has approved the agreement between the NHL and the NHLPA with a tentative start on Jan. 13th, according to NHL.com’s John Shannon.

Friday: A resolution may finally be within reach for the league and its players on a format for the 2020-21 season. Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports this evening that the NHL and NHLPA have reached a tentative agreement on the terms of season, which would include a 56-game regular season schedule.

Of course, no agreement between the sides can be finalized until it is approved by each independently first. On that note, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that the NHLPA and its player reps are expected to meet tonight while the NHL Board of Governors will meet this weekend.

Among the details trickling in are as follows:

  • The league will start on January 13 as hoped, per TVA’s Renaud Lavoie. Lavoie adds that the agreed-upon plan does include an all-Canadian division, as expected, though concerns exist about the logistics of cross-province travel.
  • TSN’s Frank Seravalli echoes that January 13 start date, though he opines that all dates could be subject to change. That includes training camp start dates as well, which he expects to be December 30 for the seven 2019-20 non-playoff teams and January 3 for all others.
  • Seravalli also reports that rosters are expected to remain at 23 players, but that each team may carry a taxi squad of four to six players who will travel and practice with the team, but will be paid their AHL salaries and will not count against the salary cap.
  • Seravalli adds that all players will be given the right to opt out of the season for personal or familial health concerns and that teams will have the decision of whether or not to toll the contract.
  • Friedman notes that salaries will not be pro-rated despite the shortened season. He also confirms that thre will be no preseason exhibition games.
  • Colorado Hockey Now’s Adrian Dater reports that the tentative plan is for every team to play out of their home building this season, at least at the outset, rather than playing in hub cities as some had speculated.
  • With the league expected to be broken down into four realigned divisions without any conference alignment, Friedman reports that each division will produce four playoff teams and the postseason will be inter-division until four division winners become the semifinalists for the 2021 Stanley Cup.

Minor Transactions: 12/19/20

With news of a tentative agreement to begin the 2020-21 season, in less than a month nonetheless, the gears have begun to turn once again for NHL clubs. With many players on loan overseas needing to be recalled and others who are ready to get an early start to their season with an assignment to the ECHL, transactions are picking up and should continue grow in number over the coming weeks. Stay tuned for the many minor moves on the way:

  • One player who is not getting ready to start his season in any regard is Nathan Paetsch. After 17 pro seasons, the skilled defenseman has decided to hang up his skates at 37. The AHL’s Rochester Americans, with whom Paetsch played parts of seven seasons, including the past three, announced the veteran’s decision. Paetsch initially signed with the Buffalo Sabres back in 2003 after being drafted out of the WHL and spent his first seven pro seasons with the organization. Outside of one season in Germany, Paetsch has spent the past decade in the AHL playing mostly with Rochester and the Grand Rapids Griffins. He totaled 167 NHL games between Buffalo and the Columbus Blue Jackets and another 651 AHL games (and over 250 points) in a long, successful career.
  • The Edmonton Oilers have recalled Tyler Benson from his loan to Switzerland’s GCK Lions, the club announced. Benson was an impactful play-maker in his short time overseas, recording a team-leading 19 points in 15 games.  While the Oilers have added some depth this off-season, they still hope the well-regarded prospect can carve out an NHL role for himself after making his debut with seven games in Edmonton last season.
  • Nick Wolff has been recalled by the Boston Bruins from his loan to Hungary’s DVTK of the Slovakian Extraliga, the team announced. It was Wolff’s first pro experience after signing with the Bruins out of the University of Minnesota-Duluth. Wolff recorded five points in 18 games and racked up a fair amount of penalty minutes as well. The physical defenseman is not expected to compete for an NHL roster spot, but should take part in training camp. Wolff could potentially spend some time with the ECHL’s Jacksonville Icemen, a team that already has a number of Bruins prospects, most recent addition being free agent goaltender addition Callum Booth.
  • The Anaheim Ducks have assigned first-year pro prospect Jack Badini to the ECHL’s Tulsa Oilers. The Harvard product was a third-round pick in 2017 and had been a productive player for the Crimson. However, the cancellation of the Ivy League winter season left Badini without a team and fast-forwarded his plans. It remains to be seen whether the two-way forward is truly ready for the pros just yet, so the Ducks will give him an early look at the “AA” level.

San Jose Sharks Expected To Open Season In Arizona

With the NHL and NHLPA inching closer to a resolution on the 2020-21 season, teams are beginning to prepare for the reality of a forthcoming campaign. While the Canadian clubs have issues to work out before the season can begin, the San Jose Sharks are another team facing questions. Santa Clara County has banned contact sports locally through at least January 8, a policy that was recently extended and could be extended again as Coronavirus numbers remain high. This proves problematic for the Sharks, who as a reigning non-playoff team would be eligible to begin training camp on December 31 and may need to host games as early as January 13.

The Sharks’ solution appears to lie in following a fellow Bay Area team south. An anonymous source tells the Associated Press that San Jose will open their season in Arizona, much like how the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers have moved to Arizona to conclude their own season. While there is no word on whether the Sharks will share a facility with the Arizona Coyotes as the 49ers have done with the Arizona Cardinals, that is the expectation. Fortunately, this move will not disrupt the NHL’s current plan for realigned divisions and exclusive inter-division play this season, as both teams have been slotted for a new-look Pacific Division.

The AP source remained anonymous on this issue as details both on the league’s return to play and on the Sharks’ move have not been finalized nor have they been made public. NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly took the same approach, telling the AP that he would not discuss details related to the Sharks’ plans as details of the restart still need to be papered and voted upon by the NHL Board of Governors and NHLPA both. The Sharks have additionally declined to comment on the relocation proposal. However, given the lack of any contrary reports, the restrictions facing San Jose, and the path already paved by the 49ers, it is a safe bet that the Sharks are Arizona-bound at least to open training camp and to begin their 2020-21 season.

Snapshots: Rattie, Gaunce, Jarventie

Even as the NHL works towards finalizing a plan to begin the 2020-21 season, with a second wave of free agent signings expected in response, many NHL veterans continue to look elsewhere for work this season. The latest appears to be forward Ty Rattie. Rattie, 27, actually played in the KHL last year but to this point had held out hope for a return to North America after a strong showing in Russia. Instead, he is expected to remain in Europe for another year. Johan Svensson of Swedish source Kvallsposten reports that the SHL’s Malmo Redhawks are close to finalizing a deal with Rattie. The skilled forward is just the latest name to be linked to a European club, as the likes of Mirco Mueller and Valentin Zykov have been among those rumored to be moving overseas this past week as well.

  • Other free agents continue to wait for NHL interest to develop ahead of the new season. Among some of the more intriguing depth names available are the brothers Gaunce. Of the 60 remaining unsigned unrestricted free agents, Cameron Gaunce and Brendan Gaunce top the list in terms of points per game this past season. Of course, a major caveat is that they finished at the bottom of that list in games played with just four games total between them. Yet, the brothers were not only efficient with minimal NHL opportunity, both were very productive in the AHL as well. Defenseman Cameron, 30, notched four points in three games with the Tampa Bay Lightning and added 32 points in 52 minor league games with the Syracuse Crunch while forward Brendan, 26, recorded a point in his lone appearance with the Boston Bruins and scored 37 points in 52 games with AHL Providence. Elite prospects who have established themselves as reliable pros over the years, the Gaunce brothers are among those whose patience should be paid off with a contract shortly.
  • Ottawa Senators prospect Roby Jarventie was not expected to challenge for a roster spot this season, but it seems the talented young forward is unlikely to make the jump to North America next year either. Finnish club Ilves of the Liiga has announced that they have exercised the option on Jarventie’s contract for the 2021-22 season. Although the NHL and the Liiga have a transfer agreement, Ilves likely made this move with the expectation that Jarventie would be around to fulfill the final year of his current contract. The second pick of the second round in the 2020 NHL Draft, Jarventie is a top prospect but is one of many for the Senators. However, with 14 points through 19 games already this season, the big forward’s stock is on the rise and Ottawa won’t want to wait too long to bring him over.

Markus Hannikainen Signs With Jokerit

Former Columbus Blue Jacket and Arizona Coyote Markus Hannikainen is headed home to Finland and to the club he grew up with. Seemingly unable to find a new NHL contract, Hannikainen has signed with the KHL’s Jokerit of his hometown of Helsinki. The veteran forward appears to be fully committed as well; the team has announced that Hannikainen has returned on a “long-term” contract. The 27-year-old has spent the past five seasons in the NHL and AHL but previously spent six years with Jokerit at various levels of Finnish hockey.

Were it not for the flat salary cap and the current lull in the NHL free agent market, perhaps Hannikainen may have been able to find another contract in North America. However, his return overseas should not come as a surprise as his career appeared to be trending in that direction. A hard-working, two-way winger whose defensive zone ability far exceeded his point totals – even as a younger prospect – Hannikainen finally broke out offensively as a pro after leaving Jokerit to join the Liiga’s JYP in 2014-15. He turned that success into an entry-level deal with Columbus, the first of three contracts he would sign with the club over three years. Hannikainen even played in four games with the Jackets in his first season in North America. As the years went on, Hannikainen began to carve out a regular role for himself in Columbus – or so it seemed. Even as his games played jumped four to 10 to 33 and finally to 44 (and a full season in the NHL) in 2018-19, the forward’s role with Columbus was always limited to meager fourth line minutes and very little offensive opportunity. As a result, the Blue Jackets did not hesitate to leave Hannikainen in the AHL this past season when they were able to upgrade their forward corps. After months without an NHL appearance, Hannikainen was traded to the Arizona Coyotes in February and the ’Yotes also opted to leave him in the minors. A two-way contract this off-season would not have been out of the question for the veteran, but between his limited NHL results and lack of offensive ability he was always going to have to prove himself in the AHL to get back to the top level.

Instead, Hannikainen has decided to return home where a guaranteed role is waiting and where he can maximize his offensive potential. While Hannikainen has a long history with Jokerit, this will be his first experience in the KHL after the club shifted leagues during his NHL absence. The level of competition should be higher this time around, but the experienced winger has several NHL seasons to his credit now as well. He also joins a talented team whose roster includes a laundry list of NHL vets including recently re-signed leading scorer Brian O’Neill and the likes of Nicklas Jensen, Jordan Schroeder, Jesse Joensuu, Iiro Pakarinen, Henrik Haapala, Saku Maenalanen, Peter Regin, Viktor Loov, Alex Grant, and Anders Lindback. The rich get richer with the addition of Hannikainen to a team that should compete for years to come in hope of winning their first Gagarin Cup.
