Latest On Taylor Hall

October 11, 2020 at 3:44 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 9 Comments

3:46 PM — NBC Sports’ Joe Haggerty reports that Boston has offered a short-term contract to bring in Hall. However, that could be a problem financially with the team still needing to sign Debrusk, Grzelcyk as well as bringing back Zdeno Chara.

3:08 PM — There are plenty of unrestricted free agent forwards parked, waiting for Taylor Hall to make a decision on where he intends to play next season. Hall, the top free agent forward on the market is considering short-term offers with contending teams and is hoping to take that and bet on himself to cash in on a bigger contract after the pandemic settles down.

While many were expecting that the Colorado Avalanche would be high-stakes players in landing Hall, that isn’t expected to happen now, according to Adrian Dater of ColoradoHockeyNow, who writes that with the acquisition of Brandon Saad from Chicago Saturday, it’s extremely unlikely the team will spend even more money on another high-priced forward, even on a short-term deal.

Saad’s acquisition likely fills the team’s need for forwards and it’s likely that if the team does go after another free agent, it’s going to be on defense. The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline also adds that the Columbus Blue Jackets are not likely a candidate to sign Hall despite the available cap room that the team has.

Dater writes that the two leading candidates to sign Hall are the Nashville Predators and the Boston Bruins.

Nashville makes sense as the team has traded away or bought out several players, including Nick Bonino, Kyle Turris and Austin Watson, while also allowing Mikael Granlund and Craig Smith to depart via free agency. The moves opens up a potential fit for the Predators. On top of that, Hall is believed to be close to both Ryan Ellis. The two played junior hockey together for three years and won a Memorial Cup together. He also has spent time playing alongside center Matt Duchene, who he played in the Ivan Hlinka and in U-18’s with.

Boston already signed Smith to a three-year deal, but the addition of Taylor Hall would be a big boost to the Bruins’ second line and for a big run with the veteran players they already have on board. The team does still have $11MM in cap space to work with, although they do have a number of restricted free agents to sign, including Jake Debrusk and Matt Grzelcyk.

St. Louis Blues Sign Kyle Clifford To Two-Year Deal

October 11, 2020 at 3:18 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 1 Comment

The St. Louis Blues have added some much-needed forward depth as the team announced that it has signed forward Kyle Clifford to two-year, $2MM contract with a $1MM AAV. Here’s a full breakdown from CapFriendly:

2020-21: $700k
2021-22: $1.3M

The Blues could be without Vladimir Tarasenko and Alex Steen for some of next year and depth will be critical, so adding Clifford as a fourth-line option makes plenty of sense for a team that is only a year removed from winning the Stanley Cup. In fact, the team could end up placing both on LTIR to start, which would free up some cap room for the team to add some players, including Clifford.

The 29-year-old spent 10 years with the Los Angeles Kings franchise before being traded at the trade deadline to the Toronto Maple Leafs. While the 6-foot-2, 210-pound forward doesn’t offer much offense, he does provide plenty of grit, something Toronto thought would be a big bonus for the playoffs. He finished between the two clubs with seven goals and 17 points in 69 games, including 133 hits. However, he was replaced in Toronto by free agent Wayne Simmonds instead.

TSN’s Darren Dreger was the first to report the signing.

New Jersey Devils Sign Scott Wedgewood To One-Year Deal

October 11, 2020 at 2:24 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

The New Jersey Devils announced they have signed goaltender Scott Wedgewood to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal is worth $700K at the NHL level and $200K at the AHL level with the likely expectation of him taking up the team’s starting goaltender in Binghamton.

Wedgewood will be making his return to the Devils’ franchise after starting his career there. The 28-year-old netminder was drafted by New Jersey in the third round back in 2010 and played within the organization until he was traded to Arizona in 2017. He spent most of that time with the Albany Devils, but did get four NHL appearances in 2015-16. He made 20 appearances with the Coyotes, but then was traded again to the Los Angeles Kings as part of the Darcy Kuemper deal. He then signed with the Buffalo Sabres for the 2018-19 season and then the Tampa Bay Lightning for this past season. He didn’t make an NHL appearances, but was the Lightnings’ third goaltender in the bubble for the team’s Stanley Cup Championship run.

Wedgewood spent last season with the Syracuse Crunch in the AHL where he struggled in 26 games there, posting a 3.01 GAA and a .893 save percentage, although he did perform much better with the Rochester Americans in 2018-19 where he appeared in 48 games with a 2.68 GAA and a .908 save percentage.

Tampa Bay’s Stamkos Undergoes Core Repair Surgery

October 11, 2020 at 2:06 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 1 Comment

Tampa Bay Lightning captain Steven Stamkos, who appeared in just one playoff game for the Stanley Cup Champions, scoring one goal in just 2:47 of ice time in Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals and never returned after that, underwent core repair surgery Wednesday, according to The Athletic’s Joe Smith (subscription required). Stamkos is expected to be ready for the start of the 2020-21 season.

Tampa Bay general manager Julien BriseBois said that Stamkos went to see a specialist earlier this week where it was determined that he required a second surgery, this time on his left-sided lower abdominal core muscle.

The 30-year-old underwent core muscle surgery in March and was expected to miss six to eight weeks, but was not ready to go when the playoffs started in August. He went to Toronto with his team and practiced, but was never comfortable enough to play throughout the playoffs. He had a solid regular season with 29 goals and 66 points in 57 games last season before undergoing surgery.

Blackhawks Core Not Happy With Chicago’s Rebuilding Plan

October 11, 2020 at 1:39 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 14 Comments

After years of adding veterans to their squad in hopes of fueling a hybrid rebuilding effort to keep the team in contention of a playoff spot, the Chicago Blackhawks have made quite a statement in the last few days, which included opting not to bring back long-time netminder Corey Crawford as well as Saturday’s Brandon Saad trade, suggest that the team intends to start a rebuild. That isn’t sitting well with the team’s core players, especially captain Jonathan Toews, according to The Athletic’s Mark Lazerus (subscription required).

The 32-year-old was a key element to the Blackhawks’ advancement into the round of 16 when the team eliminated the Edmonton Oilers in four games two months ago. He tallied four goals and seven points in that series before Chicago fell to the Vegas Golden Knights in the following round.

“Bottom line is, I want to win,” Toews told The Athletic on Saturday night. “The expectation for the other leaders on this team and myself is to come ready to training camp every year to be a playoff team. We prepare ourselves to win a Cup for our fans. I’ve never been told that we were going through a rebuild. That has never been communicated to me, for that matter. A lot of this comes as a shock because it’s a completely different direction than we expected.”

All four members of the Blackhawks’ remaining core, including Patrick Kane, Duncan Keith, Brent Seabrook and Toews have made it clear they wanted to stay in Chicago and weren’t going anywhere. Now, just as the team was showing progress that their youth movement, especially from recent play from Dominik Kubalik, Kirby Dach and Adam Boqvist. However, despite an impressive year from the 35-year-old Crawford, the team has decided to allow their young netminders, Malcolm Subban, Collin Delia and Kevin Lankinen to battle it out in the net. The team then sent Saad and most of his $6MM contract to the Avalanche for bruising defenseman Nikita Zadorov.

Lazerus writes that the change comes from the removal of team president and CEO John McDonough during the pause on April 27, who was completely against a teardown of the team. Interim president Danny Wirtz has been more open to the idea of a full rebuild and with an upcoming season with few fans in the stands, this might be the best time to undergo transforming the team.

Of course, all four remaining members of their Stanley Cup core are still under contract for another three years with Seabrook having four more years on his deal. All four players have no-movement clauses in their contracts, but would the team undergoing a full rebuild change their minds on leaving Chicago and waive their no-movement clauses? That’s hard to say as each player likely has a different mindset, although Toews made his stance clear.

“I haven’t been a part of that conversation,” he said. “This has all happened pretty suddenly, but the answer is no. Chicago’s my home, and I want to win here again.”

Islanders Swap Kyle Burroughs To Colorado For A.J. Greer

October 11, 2020 at 12:07 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

The New York Islanders have made a minor swap of players, sending defenseman Kyle Burroughs to the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for winger A.J. Greer, according to Newsday’s Andrew Gross.

With the swap, the Islanders add the 23-year-old Greer, who looks to be on the cusp of earning his way onto a team’s fourth line. The 6-foot-3, 210-pound winger is a restricted free agent, but has the potential to step into the Islanders line-up if the team doesn’t sign unrestricted free agents Matt Martin and Derick Brassard. A second-round pick in the 2015 draft, Greer spent the entire 2019-20 season with the Colorado Eagles in the AHL where he posted 16 goals, 32 points and 87 penalty minutes in 47 games. He has appeared in 37 career NHL games and could fill in on their well-known fourth line, if needed.

The Avalanche add some depth to their defense in bringing in Burroughs, who has yet to make his NHL debut. The 25-year-old blueliner has spent the last five seasons with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the AHL. Never a particularly offensive-minded player, Burroughs scored two goals and eight points in 58 games with 69 penalty minutes. He is likely earmarked to join recently acquired Dennis Gilbert with the Eagles to replace Anton Lindholm and Mark Alt.

Vegas Golden Knights Looking For Third Team To Aid In Fleury Trade

October 4, 2020 at 5:45 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 16 Comments

With the writing on the wall after the Vegas Golden Knights announced the signing of Robin Lehner to be their long-term goaltender, many have wondered what general manager Kelly McCrimmon plans to do with their former franchise goaltender, Marc-Andre Fleury, who still has $7MM AAV on the team’s books for the next two years. Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reported Saturday evening on Sportsnet’s Hockey Central that they are currently looking into finding a third team that can help retain some of Fleury’s salary before finding a new home for the veteran netminder.

“I think one of the options that I think Kelly McCrimmon and the Vegas Golden Knights have at least started to explore,” said Johnston, “is whether they may be able to use an intermediary team as part of their three-way deal in which that team is the one that retains part of Fleury’s salary in order to make this kind of transaction work.”

The Golden Knights did something similar at the trade deadline in February to acquire Lehner when they had the Chicago Blackhawks first trade Lehner to Toronto for prospect Martin Dzierkals first, while retaining half of Lehner’s $5MM salary ($2.5MM). The Leafs then retained $1.1MM and received a Vegas 2020 fifth-round pick for the transaction for sending Lehner to Vegas at a much cheaper price, which came out to just a $1.4MM cap cost for the Golden Knights. Now Vegas is trying to do that once again.

Of course with a up to 20 goaltending candidates who could move to a new location this offseason, Vegas might have more of a challenge than most offseasons. Fleury, who only appeared in four games during the Golden Knights’ playoff run to the Western Conference Finals, did fare well in his limited time, suggesting he still has quite a bit to offer a team, looking for a veteran tandem goaltender. He finished the playoffs with a 2.27 GAA and a .910 save percentage. However, his regular season was a little less impressive with a 2.77 GAA and a .905 save percentage in 49 games.

What teams might be interested remains unknown, although The Athletic’s Rob Rossi reports that while it’s unlikely, the Pittsburgh Penguins haven’t given up on the possibility of bringing Fleury back as a tandem with newly signed Tristan Jarry. However, the transaction would likely require quite a bit of creativity to make a move like that work, considering the delicate state of the Penguins’ cap situation.

Vegas, of course, could still opt to buy Fleury’s contract out as the buyout window doesn’t close until Tuesday afternoon, but then would leave the Golden Knights stuck with $2.58MM in 2020-21, $3.08MM in 2021-22 and $2.08MM in 2022-23 and 2023-24, something the team would prefer to avoid.

Taylor Hall Considering Signing One-Year Deal With Contender

October 4, 2020 at 4:21 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 10 Comments

Taylor Hall has played in the league for 10 years, but has appeared in a total of 14 playoff games. Despite being one of the top unrestricted free agents on the market, there are plenty of rumors that Hall is hoping for a big payday, but more than anything, the forward wants to play on a winner. With a flat salary cap coming this year, the Denver Post’s Mike Chambers writes that Hall might be willing to accept a one-year deal with a team like the Colorado Avalanche to play on a winning team and then test the free-agent market in a year, hopefully after the COVID-19 concerns have lightened up.

With the league being hit hard due to the coronavirus, most teams are reconsidering spending big when a flat cap could be a given for not just next year, but potentially the next few years. That isn’t good news for someone like Hall, who was looking to ink a long-term deal and with most of the top teams already close to being capped out, his goal of playing for a top team seems even more unlikely now.

However, Chambers writes that Hall is considering signing a one-year deal and Colorado is a team that makes the most sense as they are already one of the top teams in the league and the Avalanche have the cap space (approximately $21.5MM to spend) to at least offer a short-term deal. While the team’s top needs include a goaltender and some bottom-line toughness, but a top-six forward could be a great addition, especially on their second line. Hall might be the perfect fit alongside Nazem Kadri and restricted free agent Andre Burakovsky to form a second dominant line behind the Nathan MacKinnon–Mikko Rantanen–Gabriel Landeskog line.

Colorado general manager Joe Sakic seriously considered trading for Hall in December when the New Jersey Devils were shopping him. However, they decided against it, mainly because of the likely asking price and term that Hall would likely demand once his contract ran out at the end of the year. The team currently has plenty of cap space to work with, but the team will have to work out long-term deals for defenseman Cale Makar and Landeskog next year and still have to sign a number of restricted free agents this year, including Burakovsky and Ryan Graves.

If Colorado can get Hall on a one-year deal, then the team shouldn’t lose long-term cap space as well as they can see what kind of fit Hall is on their team. Since winning the Hart Trophy back in 2017-18, Hall has not been able to duplicate that type of season. He struggled with injuries in 2018-19, playing just 33 games and then struggled between New Jersey and the Arizona Coyotes with 16 goals and 52 points in 65 games.

Free Agent Focus: Pittsburgh Penguins

October 4, 2020 at 3:44 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 2 Comments

With free agency now just a few days away, teams are preparing for a frenzy of action.  There will be several prominent players set to hit the open market while many teams have key restricted free agents to re-sign.  The Penguins have some key decisions to make, but with a plan to keep their cap number down and their overall goals of making changes to keep their team in the playoff picture for the next few years, they may have to let some players go.

Key Restricted Free Agents

G Matt Murray – With the signing of Tristan Jarry on Saturday to a three-year deal, the Penguins are basically making it clear that they have chosen Jarry over Murray in net. While they could conceivably keep both as it is expected that the team will tender a qualifying offer, it still is more likely that Murray will be traded shortly. That’s a far fall for the “goalie of the future” three years back when they allowed Marc-Andre Fleury move on. Many teams are waiting for the huge free-agent goalie market to disseminate in the next week as Murray sounds like a cheaper option, but the 26-year-old’s lack of consistency likely worries plenty of teams. Murray finished the season with a 2.87 GAA and a .899 save percentage in 38 games, although the netminder did fare better in three postseason games as he had a 2.50 GAA and a .914 save percentage in three games.

F Dominik Simon – Hardly a top-six player, but the versatile Simon suddenly looks like he could be a cap casualty as The Athletic’s Rob Rossi reports that he could make as much as $1.25MM, a high price for a capped-strapped team. The 26-year-old played all over the lineup, but has never managed to post more than 30 points in his career. He tallied seven goals and 22 points last season in 64 games. The forward is also recovering from shoulder surgery in late April, which was expected to keep him out six to seven months.

Other RFAs: F Pontus Aberg, F Anthony Angello, F Graham Knott, F Sam Lafferty, F Sam Miletic, D John Nyberg.

Key Unrestricted Free Agents

D – Justin Schultz – The blueliner was singled out last month by general manger Jim Rutherford as one of the problems on the Pittsburgh blueline. That likely means that the team will allow Schultz to explore other offers around the league. The team did get an impressive year out of John Marino, suggesting the team can get along without him and $5.5MM cap hit that came with him. It’s highly unlikely he will get anything like that on the market anyway, but Schultz definitely struggled since signing that three-year, $16.5MM contract. Since posting a 51-point season with the Penguins and signing that deal, he has posted just 54 points combined in those three seasons and has dealt with a number of injuries that has affected his overall game.

F Conor Sheary – The Penguins re-acquired Sheary at the trade deadline from Buffalo after trading him there back in 2018. The 28-year-old winger scored 23 goals in his second year with the Penguins back in 2016-17. Those goals, however, have declined every year to 18 to 14 to 10 last season. The team has made it clear it doesn’t want to put Sidney Crosby next to lesser players like Sheary has, meaning if they held onto him, they would more likely move him down to the third line. The question is whether Sheary is affordable enough to bring back to the team.

F Patrick Marleau – The Penguins picked up the legendary winger from the Sharks for their playoff run, but he managed to scored just one goal and two points in eight games before the shutdown and was scoreless in four playoff games. It isn’t likely that the 41-year-old will return to Pittsburgh, although a return to the Sharks for one final season isn’t necessarily out of the question.

Other UFAs: F Riley Barber, F Thomas Di Pauli, F Adam Johnson, F Kevin Roy, F Phil Varone.

Projected Cap Space

Rutherford vowed to change up his roster this offseason in hopes of giving Crosby and Evgeni Malkin every opportunity to win another Stanley Cup before their time in the NHL is up. That will require some major decisions in both free agency and through trades, something that Rutherford is an expert on. The biggest problem remains the salary cap where the team has just $2.6MM in available cap space to make all these moves.

Dallas Stars Sign Andrej Sekera To Two-Year Contract

October 4, 2020 at 3:06 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 4 Comments

The Dallas Stars have begun getting some work done to bring back their core that carried them to the Stanley Cup Finals this year as the team announced they have re-signed defenseman Andrej Sekera to a two-year, $3MM contract with an AAV of $1.5MM.

“Andrej did an outstanding job coming in and immediately making a difference on our back end last season,” said general manager Jim Nill. “With his intelligence and experience, we look forward to Andrej continuing to play an impactful role in our defense corps.”

Sekera, who struggled with injuries while with the Edmonton Oilers the previous two years, came over to add some veteran depth for Dallas and emerged as a solid third-pairing defenseman and was an important part of the team’s penalty kill. While the 34-year-old’s offense isn’t on par with his numbers from his younger days (he had two goals and eight points in 57 games last year), he did provide solid defense and was third on the team with 75 blocked shots. The veteran averaged 18:00 of ATOI this year. He appeared in all 27 playoff games for the Stars and should continue to play a significant role next season.

Even though the team has seven defenseman already signed for next season before signing Sekera, Nill has a history of bringing in veteran depth defensemen to fill out his roster such as Roman Polak and Sekera. In fact, Sekera is the fifth defenseman on the roster who is left-handed. That leaves the team with a little under $14MM to sign all their free-agents, including signing restricted free agents Roope Hintz, Denis Gurianov, and Radek Faksa, as well as trying to re-sign veterans Anton Khudobin and Corey Perry.
