Salary Cap Deep Dive: Vancouver Canucks
Navigating the Salary Cap is probably one of the more important tasks for any general manager to have. Teams that can avert total cap chaos by walking the tightrope of inking players to deals that match their value (or compensate for future value without breaking the bank) remain successful. Those that don’t see struggles and front office changes.
PHR will look at every NHL team and give a thorough look at their cap situation heading into the 2017-18 season. This will focus more on those players who are integral parts of the roster versus those who may find themselves shuttling between the AHL and NHL. All cap figures are courtesy of CapFriendly.
Vancouver Canucks
Current Cap Hit: $73,012,499 (under the $75MM Upper Limit)
Entry-Level Contracts
F Brock Boeser (Two years remaining, $925K)
F Jake Virtanen (One year remaining, $894K)
Potential Bonuses
Boeser: $850K
Virtanen: $850K
Boeser is one of the Canucks hope for the future. The team’s 2015 first-round pick has been playing exceptionally well in camp and looks ready to take a major role on the team. After two years at the University of North Dakota, Boeser managed to play in nine games for Vancouver last year, putting up four goals and an assist in that span and averaged 2.78 shots per game as well. Virtanen, on the other hand is just trying to cement a starting role on the team. The sixth overall pick in the 2014 draft, Virtanen has been disappointing and has had trouble finding a role with the club, playing 55 games two years ago and then settling for just 10 games last year. A solid camp so far suggests, he might have turned it around as he looks to take his game to the next level.
One Year Remaining, Non-Entry-Level
F Daniel Sedin ($7MM, UFA)
F Henrik Sedin ($7MM, UFA)
D Erik Gudbranson ($3.5MM, UFA)
F Thomas Vanek ($2MM, UFA)
F Sven Baertschi ($1.85MM, RFA)
D Troy Stecher ($925K, RFA)
F Markus Granlund ($900K, RFA)
F Alexander Burmistrov ($900K, RFA)
F Anton Rodin ($700K, UFA)
F Reid Boucher ($688K, RFA)
D Patrick Wiercioch ($625K, UFA)
On a positive note, there are many contracts that are set to expire next year, which could give the Canucks quite a bit of cap space. What the team will do with the Sedin brothers, long-time franchise players, is still up in the air. Rumors that they have no interest in going to a contender to finish out their careers suggest that they may choose to retire or sign up for a much shorter, much cheaper deal with Vancouver. While both have been leading the franchise, their numbers have begun to decline now that they are 36 years old with Daniel Sedin putting up just 15 goals and 44 points a year ago, while brother Henrik also just putting up 15 goals and 51 points.
There are very few potential unrestricted free agents that are critical to the team’s building of the future. While Gudbranson is just 25 years old, the team has shown a willingness to move on from the defenseman and has been talked about in trade rumors all offseason. The former third-overall pick in 2010 didn’t fare well in his first year in Vancouver, suffering a wrist injury and playing in only 30 games. The team may want to move on before they lose him. Vanek, signed late in the offseason, is also likely a trade chip at the trade deadline.
As for restricted free agents, the team still has high hopes that Baertschi will continue to improve. After struggling to break into the Calgary Flames starting unit, Vancouver picked him up and got 15 goals in 2015-16 and another 18 last year. The 24-year-old could easily wind up on the team’s second line and have a big year. Granlund, 24, is another youngster who stepped up a year ago, putting up 19 goals as a full-time starter. Stecher will also be a free agent. The 23-year-old undrafted free agent had a solid rookie season after coming to the Canucks from the University of North Dakota. He is penciled in as a first-line defender. The team also has high hopes they can turn around Burmistrov’s career. The former top-10 pick in 2010 was signed away from Arizona with the hopes he can fill a need in the bottom six.

Panthers Sign Defenseman Ed Wittchow
Despite outward appearances, not all tryouts end poorly in the NHL. Every once in a while, an impressive camp effort can be it all it takes for even the most obscure player, veteran or prospect, to prove that they are deserving of an NHL contract. Such is the case of Ed Wittchow, who today signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Florida Panther, per a team release. Financial terms have not been disclosed.
Wittchow, 24, was actually drafted by Florida back in 2011, a sixth-round selection out of the USHL. The Minnesota-native attended the University of Wisconsin for four years, becoming the captain of the team in his final year. However, the 6’3″ Wittchow is a stay-at-home type who managed to accrue only 17 total points in his time with the Badgers. While a reliable defensive player, he also didn’t turn heads with his checking ability or physicality in the college game either. Thus, upon graduating, the Panthers had lost interest in signing Wittchow to an entry-level deal. However, he stuck around the organization, singing an AHL contract with the Panthers’ affiliate, the Springfield Thunderbirds, for the 2016-17 season. Again, Wittchow was not nothing if not unspectacular, scoring just four points and posting a -6 in 38 games with Springfield and skating in another 14 games with the ECHL’s Manchester Monarchs. Nevertheless, Wittchow’s hard work and dedication – specifically referenced by Flordia GM Dale Tallon in today’s announcement – earned Wittchow an extension with the Thunderbirds and an invitation to camp. After getting another close look at their former prospect, it seems the Panthers again would like to be a part of Wittchow’s hockey future by giving him his first NHL contract.
The Panthers could use some extra defensive depth after their recent trade of solid veteran Jason Demers to the Arizona Coyotes, but expect Wittchow’s role in 2017-18 to be more of a backup to the backups. With just one season of pro hockey under his belt, the Badger blue liner likely needs quite a bit more seasoning before he is ready to challenge for NHL minutes. However, with Springfield teammate Ian McCoshen likely now slated for a starting role in Florida and the likes of Mackenzie Weegar and Josh Brown the next men up, Wittchow should be set to play a leading role on the Thunderbirds’ blue line this season, which can only help his chances of reaching the next level one day.
Montreal Places Zach Redmond On Waivers
The Montreal Canadiens came into camp with quite a few players battling for spots on the blue line after adding Karl Alzner, David Schlemko, and Mark Streit this summer as well as Jordie Benn and Brandon Davidson late last season. With mainstays Shea Weber and Jeff Petry having spots locked in as well, the influx of talent was always going to push someone out. The process of picking their final seven is not yet over, but they have taken the first step, announcing the placement of Zach Redmond on waivers today for the purposes of reassigning him to their new AHL affiliate, the Laval Rocket.
Redmond, 29, is the first notable player to hit the waiver wire this fall. With 130 NHL games under his belt, including a 59-game, 20-point effort as a top-four regular with the Colorado Avalanche in 2014-15, Redmond has proved himself to be a reliable AHL depth option over the past five seasons. Last season in Montreal, Redmond recorded five assists over 16 games and added another 18 points in 26 AHL games. Redmond largely played the seventh-man role in Montreal, spending the majority of the season with the Canadiens, but watching from the press box. However, his early release from camp likely means that isn’t the plan for 2017-18. If Redmond clear waivers, he could spend much of the season in Laval until injury or poor play strikes the Habs’ defensive corps. If Redmond doesn’t clear waivers (not an overwhelming likelihood but a definite possibility), it will be due to his ability to step in and play competent defense as that valuable dependable extra man.
Redmond is far from alone on waivers today; joining him are several Ottawa Senators – Patrick Sieloff, Erik Burgdoerfer, Chris DiDomenico, Daniel Taylor, and Ben Sexton, several Philadelphia Flyers – Corban Knight, Greg Carey, Phil Varone, Will O’Neill, T.J. Brennan, and Mark Alt, as well as Vegas Golden Knights defenseman Chris Casto, Minnesota Wild rearguard Zach Palmquist, New York Rangers forward Adam Chapie, and Chicago Blackhawks Jeff Glass and Kyle Baun.

Minor Transactions: 9/21/17
While the big transaction news of the past week and surely the next week or so as well is training camp cuts, signings are still ongoing, with a few notable moves today:
- Back in August, AHL veteran Graham Black surprised many by giving up his pro hockey pursuits to return to school, committing to the University of Calgary. Fast forward not even a month and an even bigger name made the same rare decision today. CUSN’s Victor Findlay reports that York University announced the commitment of former Carolina Hurricanes prospect Daniel Altshuller. Altshuller, 23, was not qualified by the ‘Canes this off-season and became an unrestricted free agent. He clearly struggled to find employment elsewhere and has decided to instead return to school. However, unlike Black, a fifth-round pick who bounced around the AHL, Altschuller was a 2012 third-round pick by Carolina who was for a time seen as their goalie of the future. Although he didn’t see any action, Altshuller even earned an NHL call-up, the first (and only) of his career, in 2016-17. Yet, Altshuller could never find consistency at the AHL level. A more than capable ECHL-caliber goalie, the next level up proved to be too much and after back-to-back seasons with a 2.80+ GAA and sub-.910 save percentage, he likely realized that his NHL aspirations were unattainable. Altshuller will sit out the 2017-18 season, but will be back on the ice for Lions in 2018-19 as he continues to play hockey and now focuses on earning a degree.
- Another AHLer leaving the North American pro game is veteran Peter Mueller. Mueller is still playing hockey, but he’ll head back to Europe for the 2017-18 season. EC Salzburg of the Austrian-based EBEL announced their excitement to be signing the former NHL forward. Mueller, 29, had spent three years in Europe before returning across the Atlantic and signing with the AHL’s Providence Bruins last year following a PTO with Boston. Mueller scored 25 points in 56 games and played a leadership role on a young, talented P-Bruins squad. The former Phoenix Coyote scorer will immediately become the best and most experience player for Salzburg, bringing with him six seasons and 160 points worth of NHL pedigree.
- Mueller isn’t alone in heading to the EBEL. Former NHL goaltender Drew MacIntyre will also resume his overseas career this season, as he has re-signed with Medvescak Zagreb, formerly of the KHL and now a favorite to win the EBEL in their inaugural season. MacIntyre played in 21 games for the teams last season, posting a 2.26 GAA and .925 save percentage. Against weaker competition in the EBEL, MacIntyre has the potential to best those impressive numbers in 2017-18. A veteran of over 300 AHL games, and six NHL contests as well, the 34-year-old journeyman may just be primed for the best season of his career.

Minor Transactions: 09/18/17
As teams start into their preseason schedule, the first round of cuts will send mostly junior-aged players back to their respective clubs. Rosters will be pared down slightly, with teams like the Philadelphia Flyers and Nashville Predators already making moves earlier today. Below we’ll list some of the other cuts, as well as any minor moves around the league.
- The Colorado Avalanche have cut five players today, sending Sam Brittain and Ben Storm to the San Antonio Rampage of the AHL, while Josh Anderson, Tom Gregoire and Hugo Roy will all return to their respective junior teams. Anderson should not be confused with the Columbus Blue Jackets’ restricted free agent currently holding out; this one is a defenseman with the Prince George Cougars, who was selected in the third round of the 2016 draft.
- The San Jose Sharks have cut 13 players from their training camp roster, sending Noah Gregor and Joachim Blichfeld back to junior, while assigning Michael Brodzinski, Cavan Fitzgerald, David Makowski, Jeremy Roy, Jonathan Martin, Colby McAuley, Bryan Moore, Alex Schoenborn, Alexander True, Manuel Wiederer and Stephon Williams to AHL camp. 42 players remain in Sharks camp, which will continue to be whittled down by the start of the year.
- The Montreal Canadians have sent Antoine Samuel back to Baie-Comeau of the QMJHL, where he will likely be the starter once again. Samuel went undrafted, but will try to earn himself a professional contract playing as a CHL over-aged player this season.
- Boston has sent Cedric Pare back to the Saint John Sea Dogs, making him their lone cut on Monday afternoon. Pare was selected in the sixth round this summer, and will try to improve his offensive game this season in the QMJHL.
- The St. Louis Blues have sent Tanner Kaspick, Trenton Bourque, David Noel and Evan Fitzpatrick back to their junior teams, reducing their training camp roster to 47. Fitzpatrick is easily the most interesting of the bunch, as a second-round pick last year. The 19-year old goalie will return to Sherbrooke and continue his development in the QMJHL.
- After acquiring another defenseman this weekend, the Arizona Coyotes have sent Noel Hoefenmayer, Cam Dineen, MacKenzie Entwistle, Nate Schnarr and Tyler Steenbergen back to their respective junior teams. The Coyotes have also released Michael Houser and Scott Allen from their professional tryouts. 48 players are now in their camp, which will continue to be reduced as we near the season.
- The Detroit Red Wings have sent Zach Gallant, Brady Gilmour, Lane Zablocki, Cole Fraser, Jordan Sambrook and Reilly Webb back to junior, while releasing Oliver Castleman, Isaac Johnson, Sean Josling, Luke Kutkevicius, Marcus Crawford, Evan Fiala and Corbin Boes from their tryouts.
- Pittsburgh has returned Jan Drozg, Zachary Lauzon, Alex D’Orio and Connor Hall to their respective CHL teams, reducing their training camp number to 55. D’Orio was just signed to an entry-level contract last week, after going undrafted in the recent entry draft.
