AHL Shuffle: 03/06/22

March 6, 2022 at 2:00 pm CDT | by John Gilroy Leave a Comment

An intriguing Sunday of NHL hockey is already underway, including a Stanley Cup Final rematch that sees the Chicago Blackhawks host the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Seattle Kraken making their first trip to Carolina, and playoff implications already, as the Minnesota Wild, in third place in the Central Division with 67 points, host the Dallas Stars, who are holding onto the second Wild Card in the Western Conference with 65 points. Despite all the action, there are still plenty of transactions happening throughout the NHL and AHL today:

Metropolitan

Atlantic

  • To make room for today’s waiver claim in Olli Juolevi, the Detroit Red Wings have sent down center Joe Veleno to the AHL’s Grand Rapids Griffins. Veleno, the 30th overall pick in the 2018 NHL draft, has been productive at the AHL level this season with 10 points in 11 games. At the NHL level, though, he has had to adapt to a different role, and has 10 points in 40 games for the big club.
  • The Florida Panthers have recalled goalie Spencer Knight to the NHL from the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers. Knight, 20, is one of the top goalie prospects in hockey but has struggled so far this season with the Panthers, with a .898 save percentage in 18 starts. He has been better at the AHL level in Charlotte, though, with a .917 in 10 starts, and clearly his performance was enough to motivate the Panthers to bring him back up for another run as Sergei Bobrovsky’s backup.
  • The Ottawa Senators have recalled goalie Filip Gustavsson from the AHL’s Belleville Senators. Gustavsson has split time this season between Ottawa and Belleville. He has 13 NHL starts and a .896 save percentage in Ottawa, and 10 starts in Belleville where he has posted a .905 save percentage.

Pacific

  • The San Jose Sharks announced that they have placed goaltender James Reimer on IR. In a corresponding move, they have recalled defenseman Santeri Hatakka from the AHL’s San Jose Barracuda. Reimer had been having a solid season for the Sharks, posting a 2.84 goals against average and .916 over 34 games in net this season. Meanwhile, Hatakka will return to the NHL for the third time this season. The defenseman tallied just one assist in seven games for the Sharks this season, last playing November 18th against St. Louis. Hatakka was recalled for three days last week, but did not play. The 21-year-old has also suited up for 21 games for the Barracuda this season, recording one goal and three assists.
  • The Vancouver Canucks have announced that they have assigned winger Phillip Di Giuseppe to the AHL’s Abbotsford Canucks. Di Giuseppe has yet to get into a game with the Canucks this season after an energetic 2020-2021 campaign with the New York Rangers. He has been a crucial player in Abbotsford, though, with 11 goals and 32 points in 35 games.
  • Edmonton Oilers interim head coach Jay Woodcroft has said, per Daniel Nugent-Bowman of the Athletic, that goalie Stuart Skinner will be recalled from the AHL’s Bakersfield Condors because incumbent starter Mike Smith is dealing with an illness. Skinner, 23, has been a lonely bright spot in net for the Oilers this season, with a .913 save percentage in 13 games played. Skinner also owns a .919 save percentage at the AHL level.
  • The Anaheim Ducks announced that they have recalled goaltender Lukas Dostal from San Diego of the AHL.  The 21-year-old made his NHL debut back in January but has been in the minors for the last seven weeks and last week, had a 51-save performance while scoring his first career professional goal.  Dostal will take the place of John Gibson who is out of the lineup due to an upper-body injury.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights announced the recall of defenseman Daniil Miromanov from AHL Henderson.  The 24-year-old has been up and down several times this season and has seven NHL games under his belt where he has an assist in just over ten minutes of playing time per game.  Miromanov is in for Brayden McNabb who has been placed on injured reserve.

Snapshots: KHL Departures, AHL Signings, NHL Trade Market

March 5, 2022 at 12:53 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 2 Comments

Amidst the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the exodus in the KHL continues. While many North American players had already left their respective Russia-based club and two non-Russian teams left the league altogether, perhaps the largest blow yet occurred Friday as European players across the KHL left their teams en masse. The move takes place as the Gagarin Cup playoffs are underway.

The Eastern Conference first round match-up between Salavat Yulaev Ufa and Sibir Novosibirsk will look decidedly different moving forward. Ufa, the No. 3 seed in the conference, announced that all of their import players have left the team. This includes names familiar to NHL fans like Markus Granlund, Teemu Hartikainen, and Philip Larsen. Granlund and fellow departure Sakari Manninen led the club in scoring this season. Novosibirsk revealed that a pair of former NHLers had left their ranks as well in goaltender Harri Sateri and defenseman Jyrki Jokipakka. Leading scorer Nick Shore had already left the team and is now joined by the starting goaltender and arguably their best defender. Perennial favorite CSKA Moscow is not immune to this movement; the team announced that they have lost recent NHL contributors Joakim Nordstrom and Lucas Wallmark, both of whom served in top-six roles. Finally, regular season champion Metallurg Magnitogorsk may have lost their title hopes with the departure of starting goaltender Juho Olkinuora. The former AHLer and University of Denver standout was among the best keepers in the KHL this season. This is not the extent of the departures of foreign players, nor will it be the last.

  • There has been a flurry of activity in the AHL of late, headlined by an extension for veteran forward Tanner Fritz. The Hartford Wolf Pack announced that their plus/minus leader has inked a new contract for the 2022-23 season. Fritz, 30, has played his pro career almost exclusively in New York and Connecticut, spending five years with the New York Islanders and their affiliate in Bridgeport before moving to Hartford this season. While appreciative of a new contract, Fritz is probably eyeing a contract with the New York Rangers next, if possible. In Toronto, the Marlies have elevated NHL veteran Joseph Blandisi from a PTO to a contract for the remainder of the season. Blandisi, 27, has been a near point-per-game player for the Marlies this season and is well-deserving of a real contract. Down in Charlotte, the Checkers are bringing in some fresh blood from the junior ranks. Defenseman Robert Calisti of the OHL’s Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and forward Xavier Cormier of the QMJHL’s Rimouski Oceanic have each signed two-year contracts with the club, beginning next season. The two combined for 72 points in 81 games this season and the Checkers hope that production translates to the pros.
  • If it seems like all the action right now is outside of the NHL, while the trade market remains all bark and no bite, it’s true. Despite the usual speculation, there have been nearly no early moves made this season with the deadline just over two weeks away. Outside of Tyler Toffoli and Nick Ritchie/Ilya Lyubushkin, the only trades made of late have included future considerations, seventh-round picks, and third-string goaltenders. TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that the holdup on the market comes from the buyers rather than the sellers. He believes that the salary cap concerns, especially from those teams managing long-term injuries, is slowing deal-making. However, there may be hope that things will pick up soon, as LeBrun notes that sellers are getting antsy. Contenders with cap space, such as the Predators, Rangers, Wild, and Bruins, could be the beneficiaries if other cap-strapped teams continue to drag their feet.

AHL Shuffle: 03/05/22

March 5, 2022 at 10:45 am CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

It is a busy Saturday across the NHL with 10 games on the docket over the course of 12+ hours. The St. Louis Blues and New York Islanders kick things off at 11:30am CT, followed by at least one game starting nearly every hour from 2:00pm CT until the Calgary Flames and Colorado Avalanche square off in one of the most highly-anticipated match-ups of the season thus far at 9:00pm CT. If all of these teams aren’t too busy preparing and the other dozen not playing aren’t too busy themselves watching all the action, perhaps we will see some roster movement today.

Atlantic Division

Metropolitan Division

  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have demoted defenseman Jake Christiansen, a player who has been up and down regularly this season. The team announced that Christiansen has been reassigned to the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters, where he has played in 39 games this year. While he has only suited up for four with the Blue Jackets, Christiansen has spent considerable time on the NHL roster.
  • Kevin Hayes is back with the Philadelphia Flyers. The veteran center has been out since mid-January after undergoing surgery and his recovery exceeded the expected three-to-four week projection. However, he has finally been activated from the injured reserve. Philadelphia may not have many playoff hopes left this season, but will be glad to have a locker room leader back. The timing is poor for Wade Allison, who has also been activated from the IR but with Hayes taking the open NHL roster spot, Allison will head to the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Allison suffered a knee injury in his season debut back in January and has been out ever since, but certainly hoped to return to the Flyers lineup after playing in 14 games as a rookie last season.
  • The New York Islanders recalled two players in time for their game against the St. Louis Blues earlier today, a 2-1 win for New York. Forward Otto Koivula was recalled from Bridgeport and played in the game for the Islanders, who were without forwards Mathew Barzal and Anders Lee. This was just Kiovula’s fourth game of the season, last playing December 2nd for the Islanders. Defenseman Parker Wotherspoon was also recalled from Bridgeport, but was immediately sent back down after the game. Wotherspoon has yet to make his NHL debut, but has been a solid contributor for Bridgeport the past few seasons.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes recalled goaltender Alex Lyon from the AHL’s Chicago Wolves on an emergency basis. The 29-year-old Lyon has only played in two games this year for Carolina, but has had an impressive 23 games in the AHL, carrying a 2.14 goals against average and .911 save percentage. Lyon’s emergency recall suggests that one of Antti Raanta or Frederik Andersen are unable to go for Carolina tomorrow night.

Central Division

Pacific Division

  • The Edmonton Oilers recalled defenseman Philip Broberg from the Bakersfield Condors of the AHL. Broberg was immediately inserted into the Oilers lineup as they square off against the Montreal Canadiens at home. The 20-year-old Broberg has just one point in 17 games this season for Edmonton, but has excelled in the AHL, tallying 19 points in 27 games.

AHL Shuffle: 03/04/22

March 4, 2022 at 10:52 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Seven games grace the NHL schedule this evening, including a big matchup between the Vegas Golden Knights and Anaheim Ducks. After some impressive work by other teams, Vegas and Anaheim are now fighting to try and keep pace in the Pacific Division. The Ducks, in particular, are at risk of falling out of the race, as they currently trail not only Vegas but also the Dallas Stars in a battle for the final wild card spot. As they and other teams prepare for action, we’ll keep track of all the minor league shuffling.

Atlantic Division

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs have recalled Mac Hollowell from the AHL, giving them an extra defenseman for the game tomorrow night against the Vancouver Canucks. Hollowell has been good for the Toronto Marlies this season, racking up 18 points in 29 games. If he got into a game, it would be his NHL debut.
  • The Montreal Canadiens have placed goaltender Andrew Hammond on injured reserve. Hammond suffered a lower-body injury in the team’s overtime win over the Calgary Flames. In a corresponding move, the Canadiens recalled goaltender Cayden Primeau from the AHL’s Laval Rocket on an emergency basis.

Metropolitan Division

  • The Washington Capitals have returned Zach Fucale to the AHL, recalling Axel Jonsson-Fjallby in his place. Fucale’s assignment suggests that Ilya Samsonov is okay and will be able to dress for tomorrow’s game after leaving practice earlier this week. Jonsson-Fjallby has played in nine games this season for the Capitals, but is still looking for his first NHL goal.

Central Division

Pacific Division

  • The Vegas Golden Knights have recalled Jake Leschyshyn once again, bringing up the young forward for the second time this month. Leschyshyn has played 20 NHL games this season, scoring one goal and four point.
  • The Edmonton Oilers have recalled 2019 8th overall pick Philip Broberg from the Bakersfield Condors. Broberg, 20, has been up-and-down from Bakersfield for much of this season. He has had a good year for the Oilers’ AHL affiliate, with 19 points in 27 games, but that offense hasn’t translated to the NHL, where he has only a single point to his name in 17 career games.

AHL Shuffle: 03/03/22

March 3, 2022 at 10:09 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It’s another matchup of first and last this evening, as the Colorado Avalanche take on the Arizona Coyotes. Yes, the Coyotes are 52 points behind the Avalanche in the standings, but that didn’t matter the last time these two teams met. On February 1, Alex Galchenyuk was the only successful shooter to give Arizona a 3-2 shootout victory over the powerhouse Colorado squad, a game the Avalanche have surely not forgotten, as it ended a home win streak at 18. As they and other teams around the league prepare for action, we’ll keep track of all the minor league shuffling.

Atlantic Division

  • The Ottawa Senators have returned Scott Sabourin to the AHL, after activating him off injured reserve. Sabourin hasn’t played in more than a month and will have to get some minor league action in before he’s ready to help Ottawa.
  • The Detroit Red Wings have activated Riley Barber from injured reserve and assigned him to the minor leagues. The 28-year-old forward has appeared in just two games for Detroit this season, spending most of his year with the Grand Rapids Griffins.

Metropolitan Division

  • Zach Fucale is on his way back to Washington, recalled by the Capitals today after Ilya Samsonov was forced to leave practice yesterday. If Samsonov–who took a shot up high and left early–is unable to play, it would likely be Vitek Vanecek making his second start since returning from injured reserve. The Capitals take on the Carolina Hurricanes this evening, trying to snap a three-game losing streak.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers have sent Isaac Ratcliffe back to the AHL, which could suggest Kevin Hayes is ready to return to action. Ratcliffe, 23, appears to be one of the bright spots for Flyers fans to focus on, with four points in ten games this season. The 6’6″ forward is hard to miss when he’s on the ice, though he did receive fewer than eight minutes of action in his last game.
  • The New York Rangers have recalled Tim Gettinger, moving Kevin Rooney to injured reserve in the process. Gettinger, 23, hasn’t seen NHL action since mid-January and has just 13 games in total since making his debut in the 2018-19 season.

Central Division

  • Alec Regula has been returned to the AHL by the Chicago Blackhawks, where he can continue his strong minor league campaign. The 21-year-old defenseman looks like he will be a part of the Chicago blueline for a long time when he eventually makes the full-time jump, but for now is still focused on development. In 25 games for Rockford, the 6’4″ Regula has 17 points.

Pacific Division

  • The Seattle Kraken have returned Kole Lind to the minor leagues, despite his strong play last night in a win over the Nashville Predators. Lind recorded his second NHL point and generated five shots on goal, but will have to wait patiently for his next opportunity.

AHL Shuffle: 03/02/22

March 2, 2022 at 12:01 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

The Buffalo Sabres and Toronto Maple Leafs square off this evening in one of the four games on the NHL schedule, less than two weeks before they will meet again outdoors. The Sabres are going in a very different direction than the Maple Leafs right now, losing six in a row, but have always posed a tough test for the team from Toronto. On March 13, the two will meet for the Heritage Classic at Tim Horton’s Field in Hamilton, Ontario, meaning this is a tune-up of sorts for that exterior affair. As they and other teams around the league prepare for action, we’ll keep track of all the minor league shuffling.

Atlantic Division

Metropolitan Division

Central Division

Pacific Division

  • The Vegas Golden Knights have returned Jake Leschyshyn to the minor leagues, just a day after he came up. The 22-year-old forward has played 20 games for the Golden Knights this season, recording four points.
  • With the San Jose Sharks now off until Saturday, they’ve returned Santeri Hatakka to the minor leagues for the time being. The 21-year-old defenseman hasn’t played in the NHL since November, but could end up seeing some time as the Sharks deal with several injuries in the coming weeks.

AHL Shuffle: 03/01/22

March 1, 2022 at 8:49 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It’s a new month and a busy one for the NHL, which will hold the trade deadline in three weeks. Today is also the first day that teams can sign players from their reserve list or undrafted prospects to entry-level contracts that begin in 2022-23. That likely means several deals will be inked this week, but there are also games to play and minor league shuffling to focus on. As always, we’ll keep track of it right here.

Atlantic Division

  • With some Ottawa Senators dealing with the flu, the team has recalled Dillon Heatherington from the minor leagues. Heatherington, 26, has played in nine games for the Senators this season but is still looking for his first career goal. The big 6’4″ defenseman had 18 hits in those nine games, despite playing just a handful of minutes in each.
  • The Buffalo Sabres have assigned Jack Quinn to the Rochester Americans, despite listing him as day-to-day in this morning’s injury update. The young forward has played in just two games at the NHL level but has two points, both in his most recent appearance January 20.

Metropolitan Division

  • The New York Rangers have recalled forward Jonny Brodzinski from the AHL’s Hartford Wolfpack, and have sent down defender Zac Jones in a corresponding move. Brodzinski recently signed a two-year extension with the Rangers and leads the Wolf Pack with 18 goals and 39 points this season. Jones, 21, is one of the Rangers’ top defensive prospects and returns to the AHL where he has 18 points in 27 games.

Central Division

  • The Nashville Predators have assigned Matt Tennyson to the Milwaukee Admirals, where he is having a nice season. In 40 games, the veteran defenseman has 14 points and is a perfect depth option to fill in whenever Nashville has injury issues.

Pacific Division

  • The Vegas Golden Knights have recalled Jake Leschyshyn from the minor leagues, as Mattias Janmark hits injured reserve. Leschyshyn has 24 points in 31 games for the Henderson Silver Knights this season and has played in 20 games for Vegas.
  • The Edmonton Oilers have activated Duncan Keith off injured reserve, while sending both Brendan Perlini–who cleared waivers today–and Philip Broberg to the AHL. Broberg, one of the team’s top prospects, has split the year between Edmonton and Bakersfield, logging a combined 43 games between the two levels.

AHL Shuffle: 02/27/22

February 27, 2022 at 11:06 am CDT | by John Gilroy Leave a Comment

After an exciting Saturday of hockey featuring an outdoor game, a 1-0 nail-biter, and a 10-7 thriller, the NHL is back in action Sunday with an eight-game slate, featuring what should be an exciting Edmonton Oilers vs. Carolina Hurricanes matinee.  We can still expect plenty of player movement throughout the day:

Atlantic Division

Metropolitan Division

Central Division

Pacific Division

  • The Vegas Golden Knights announced that they have recalled forward Jonas Rondbjerg from the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights (Twitter link). In a corresponding move, Vegas assigned forward Jake Leschyshyn to Henderson. Leschyshyn has just one goal and three assists in 20 games this season for Vegas, but has put up a strong 12 goals and 12 assists in 31 games for Henderson this season. Rondbjerg, on the other hand, has had a remarkably similar season, tallying two goals and two assists in 16 games for Vegas, while putting up 11 goals and 12 assists in 31 games for Henderson this season. The team has also reassigned goaltender Logan Thompson to the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights.
  • The Edmonton Oilers have shifted veteran defenseman Kris Russell to long-term injured reserve, the team announced. Russell has been on IR since February  7 with an undisclosed injury, but with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Kailer Yamamoto now sidelined, the team needed additional cap space to field a full roster, necessitating Russell’s transition. Brad Malone has received the call to fill that newfound space; the 32-year-old forward is in his fifth season with the Oilers organization, but hasn’t played in an NHL game since 2018-19.
  • With starter John Gibson likely to miss some time with an illness, the Anaheim Ducks have recalled young netminder Lukas Dostal from the AHL’s San Diego Gulls. Dostal, 21, has been very impressive in three appearances with the Ducks this season and certainly appears to have the makings of an NHL regular in the near future.
  • Rudolfs Balcers has been placed on injured reserve by the San Jose Sharks. Replacing him on the roster is Scott Reedy, the team announced. Reedy, 22, has played in five NHL games in his first pro season but has yet to record a point. However, the big center has 18 goals and 27 points in 38 games with the AHL Barracuda in an impressive rookie campaign.

This post will be updated throughout the day.

Washington Capitals Activate Vitek Vanecek And Loan To AHL

February 27, 2022 at 9:46 am CDT | by John Gilroy Leave a Comment

The Washington Capitals announced Sunday morning that they have assigned goaltenders Vitek Vanecek and Pheonix Copley to the AHL’s Hershey Bears. Vanecek, the Capitals announced, will only be with Hershey on a conditioning loan after spending time on injured reserve. Copley, meanwhile, will remain in Hershey.

The Capitals had been without the steady Vanecek since he was injured in a game February 1st against the Pittsburgh Penguins. While Vanecek has been strong in net for the Capitals this season with a .915 save percentage and 2.39 goals-against average, his net-partner Ilya Samsonov has struggled to a .905 save percentage and 2.85 goals-against average. Vanecek’s return should provide a more reliable presence in net for the Capitals, while allowing them to put Samsonov in for favorable matchups.

The Washington Post’s Samantha Pell suggests that Vanecek will likely play tonight for Hershey and if all goes well, he could be recalled to Washington in time for their game tomorrow night against Toronto.

Also sent down to Hershey is Copley, who had only played in two games after being recalled in the wake of Vanecek’s injury. Copley had not played in the NHL before this season since he suited up for 27 games with the Capitals back in the 2018-19 season. Since he does not need waivers, Copley should join Hershey immediately and remain available to the Capitals should they need him down the stretch.

AHL Shuffle: 02/26/22

February 26, 2022 at 11:43 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

It’s another busy Saturday in the NHL with 20 teams in action including Tampa Bay and Nashville who face off in the latest installment of the Stadium Series.  There should be plenty of roster movement throughout the day which we’ll keep track of here.

Atlantic Division

TBD

Metropolitan Division

  • The Blue Jackets announced (Twitter link) that they’ve sent defenseman Jake Christiansen back to AHL Cleveland. The 22-year-old was recently brought up as extra depth with Zach Werenski injured although he didn’t see any NHL action on this recall.  He has 26 points in 38 AHL contests this season.

Central Division

  • Just one day after being recalled, the Blackhawks have sent defenseman Jakub Galvas back to Rockford of the AHL, reports Charlie Roumeliotis of NBC Sports Chicago (Twitter link). The 22-year-old has played in six NHL contests this season plus 32 more in the minors.  Also rejoining the IceHogs is forward Lukas Reichel as Chicago continues to manage his games played to not burn the first year of his entry-level deal.  Taking their place on Chicago’s roster will be winger Josiah Slavin and defenseman Isaak Phillips, per the AHL’s transactions log.

Pacific Division

TBD
