Seattle Kraken Recall Max McCormick; Place Justin Schultz On IR

January 27, 2023 at 11:40 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Seattle Kraken have moved Justin Schultz to injured reserve, as he deals with a week-to-week designation. In his place, Max McCormick has been recalled from the Coachella Valley Firebirds.

McCormick’s recall will cast doubt on the status of Matty Beniers, who was injured last night after Tyler Myers of the Vancouver Canucks threw him to the ice. Kate Shefte of the Seattle Times reports that Beniers wasn’t available for the third period.

That’s not to say the recall is undeserved. McCormick has been outstanding for Coachella, serving as captain and scoring 42 points in 38 games so far. The 30-year-old journeyman minor leaguer has transformed his game over the years, going from a physical instigator to a legitimate top-line AHL talent.

We’ll see if some of his former self appears in the NHL though. In 93 career NHL games, McCormick has 97 penalty minutes, including nine fighting majors. In ten appearances last season for the Kraken he failed to score a point.

Cole Caufield Out For The Season With A Shoulder Injury

January 27, 2023 at 10:15 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 8 Comments

Jan 27: Caufield will undergo surgery on February 1 in Colorado, according to Eric Engels of Sportsnet.

Jan 21: The Canadiens have struggled offensively this season and scoring goals just got a lot harder as the team announced that winger Cole Caufield suffered a season-ending shoulder injury and will undergo surgery in the near future.  There is no timeline for how long the recovery period will take with an update being expected after the medical procedures are completed.

Caufield played in Thursday’s loss to Florida and was a full participant in practice on Friday so the announcement comes as somewhat of a surprise.  TVA Sports’ Renaud Lavoie notes (Twitter link) that the injury isn’t something that just happened but has instead been lingering for the past several weeks.  The 22-year-old is tied for 11th in the league in goals this season with 26 while TSN noted earlier this week that he’s tied for eighth in the league in goals since Martin St. Louis took over behind the bench a little less than a year ago.  Caufield has over 21% of Montreal’s goals this season with the team ranking 28th in the league in goals scored heading into Saturday’s action.

Caufield is set to become a restricted free agent this summer without salary arbitration eligibility.  His case is one of some intrigue given how productive he has become under St. Louis while GM Kent Hughes indicated earlier this week that preliminary discussions are underway with a desire to lock him up on a long-term contract.  However, with his first season being a short one having burned his first entry-level year after his college campaign, Caufield only has 123 career regular season contests under his belt which is considerably less than what most players that sign a long-term, big-money agreement after their first contract have.

In a corresponding roster move, the Canadiens announced (Twitter link) that forward Alex Belzile has been recalled from AHL Laval.  The 31-year-old has 13 career games of NHL experience with Montreal over the last two seasons and has 13 goals and 12 assists in 29 games with the Rocket this season.  Even with this recall, Montreal only has 11 healthy forwards on their active roster and they are expected to dress seven defensemen tonight against Toronto.

Auston Matthews Out Three Weeks With Knee Sprain

January 27, 2023 at 9:32 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 6 Comments

The Toronto Maple Leafs will be missing their best player for the next little while, as Auston Matthews is expected to miss a minimum of three weeks with a knee sprain. The injury was suffered against the New York Rangers on Wednesday night. This would also rule Matthews out for the All-Star festivities next week.

There were a number of hard hits delivered by the Rangers earlier this week, though there is no clear answer as to when Matthews sustained the injury. The star center still played nearly 22 minutes in the game, blocking three shots and delivering four shots on net.

In his place, rookie Pontus Holmberg was skating between Calle Jarnkrok and William Nylander, while John Tavares assumes top-line duty. The lack of offensive center depth is a concern for the Maple Leafs, and potentially could become an area of focus at the upcoming trade deadline.

It has been a frustrating season for Matthews, who has missed a handful of games with undisclosed injuries, and isn’t scoring at quite the same pace he is used to. Though he does have 53 points in 47 games, just 25 of those are goals. It would be the first time in his career that he finished with more assists than goals, should that trend continue.

Even more surprising is his lack of even-strength scoring, an area he has dominated throughout his career. In four of Matthews’ six seasons, he has led the league in even-strength goals, including last year when he potted 44 of them. Just 15 tallies this year have come at even strength, with his shooting percentage much lower than his career norm.

Some have speculated that other injuries have disrupted that timing all season, so perhaps Maple Leafs fans will see this time away with a bit of a silver lining. If on his return, Toronto gets the fully-recovered 60-goal superstar that won the Hart Trophy last season, a three-week absence will be a fine price to pay.

In his place at the All-Star game will be Aleksander Barkov of the Florida Panthers.

Snapshots: Meier, Monahan, Barbashev

January 26, 2023 at 9:00 pm CDT | by Ethan Hetu 8 Comments

San Jose Sharks forward Timo Meier could be one of the most in-demand names on the trade market as we inch closer to the deadline, and potential suitors for his services are starting to become clearer. On TSN’s Insider Trading program, TSN’s Pierre LeBrun revealed that he had interviewed New Jersey Devils GM Tom Fitzgerald and that in the interview Fitzgerald confirmed the Devils’ interest in acquiring a top-six winger.

On Insider Trading, LeBrun added that Meier would “fit exactly what the Devils want” in a top-six forward, especially given that there is the potential for any team acquiring Meier to retain him beyond just this season. The Fourth Period’s David Pagnotta noted that the Devils have not had any recent contract talks with pending RFA winger Jesper Bratt and his representatives. While Pagnotta did clarify that the Devils and Bratt still have a mutual interest in getting an extension hammered out, it is fair to wonder what kind of implications the team’s interest in Meier could have on Bratt’s future in New Jersey.

Some other notes from across the NHL:

  • LeBrun also spoke on Insider Trading about Montreal Canadiens center Sean Monahan. LeBrun reported that the Colorado Avalanche are a “team to monitor” when it comes to a potential trade fit for the veteran pivot. The Avalanche have long been rumored to be seeking help down the middle and could opt for the injured Monahan, who has scored 17 points in 25 games in Montreal, as a cheaper option than higher-end choices such as Ryan O’Reilly or Bo Horvat.
  • On Insider Trading, Johnston also issued an update on St. Louis Blues forward Ivan Barbashev. He reported that Barbashev “is a name that has started to circulate” on the trade market, even though the Blues are still holding out some hope that they could go on a run that would put them back into the playoff mix. The 27-year-old forward is an unrestricted free agent after this season and has scored 23 points in 48 games. While that points production doesn’t jump off the page, it’s worth remembering that Barbashev scored 26 goals and 60 points just a year ago.

Injury Notes: Samuelsson, Edmundson, Pacioretty

January 26, 2023 at 8:05 pm CDT | by Ethan Hetu 2 Comments

When the Buffalo Sabres have been at their best this season, stay-at-home blueliner Mattias Samuelsson has been in the lineup. As The Buffalo News’ Mike Harrington notes, the Sabres are 22-9-3 with Samuelsson in the lineup, but just 3-10-0 without him. Tonight’s news doesn’t bode well for the team, then, as the Sabres have announced that Samuelsson is out for their game against the Winnipeg Jets due to a lower-body injury.

Samuelsson has already missed some time this year due to injury, although it’s unclear if the injury keeping him out of the lineup tonight is in any way related to the one that caused his previous absence. While he’s not an offensive force, Samuelsson’s defensive play has received high praise. He was rewarded by the Sabres with a long-term extension that will take him until the 2030 offseason, and figures to, if all breaks right, be a long-term number-three blueliner for the Sabres behind the Sabres’ two top draft picks in Rasmus Dahlin and Owen Power.

Some other injury notes:

  • While Montreal Canadiens veteran defenseman Joel Edmundson could be a name to watch heading into trade deadline season, any conversations might need to be put on hold. The Canadiens announced that Edmundson would not return to the team’s contest against the Detroit Red Wings tonight. The blueliner, who has another year left on his deal at $3.5MM, has suffered a lower-body injury that knocked him out of the game. We’ll have more information on Edmundson’s status as it becomes available.
  • Carolina Hurricanes forward Max Pacioretty received a major health setback when he tore his Achilles tendon for the second time in this league year. Per TSN’s Chris Johnston on the network’s Insider Trading program, Pacioretty travelled to Turku, Finland for the operation to have his Achilles repaired. Johnston reports that the timeline for his recovery is expected to be around eight-to-nine months, although there is always the lingering possibility that these injuries have a more permanent impact on Pacioretty’s playing future than Pacioretty and every NHL fan would hope for.

Minor Transactions: 01/26/23

January 26, 2023 at 6:25 pm CDT | by Ethan Hetu 1 Comment

It’s a busy Thursday night on the NHL schedule, with nearly twenty teams set to do battle. Highlights from tonight include a heated rivalry matchup between Alex Ovechkin’s Washington Capitals and Sidney Crosby’s Pittsburgh Penguins, and a showdown between the league-leading Boston Bruins and the defending three-time Prince of Wales Trophy winners, the Tampa Bay Lightning. As hockey fans soak in all of tonight’s matchups, teams from across the hockey world have been making tweaks to their rosters. We’ll track those moves here.

  • Former WHL star and New York Rangers prospect Ty Ronning has decided to continue his professional career in Europe. The 25-year-old 2016 seventh-round pick is perhaps best known for scoring 61 goals in the 2017-18 WHL season. He’s been a decent scorer at the AHL level, potting 18 goals and 39 points last season, and is now headed to Germany to play for ERC Ingolstadt in the DEL. Ingolstadt has been ravaged by injuries this season, so the addition of Ronning should be able to help them during a crucial stretch of their DEL campaign.
  • Ingolstadt made another move today, signing 22-year-old defenseman Leon Huttl to a two-year extension, meaning he will be under contract with the Bavarian side until 2026. After spending several seasons in the German second division, Huttl has firmly established himself as a regular in Germany’s top division in Ingolstadt. He routinely plays over 20 minutes per night, with some games reaching closer to 25 minutes. He represented Germany at the 2020 World Juniors and now gets some early stability in his pro career.
  • Former Boston Bruins prospect Cedric Pare has had a successful PTO with the AHL’s Colorado Eagles, and today had that PTO made into a full contract according to the AHL’s official transactions page. The big 24-year-old had a solid professional debut in 2020-21, scoring 17 goals and 40 points in 67 ECHL games for the Utah Grizzlies. That performance earned him an AHL deal for 2021-22, but he struggled immensely, scoring just 10 points in 41 games. This season, he’s spent most of his time in the ECHL until being signed to a PTO by the Eagles in November. He’s got seven points in 19 games for Colorado, and will now get to finish his season there.
  • Daniel Glad has helped two teams to promotion from the HockeyAllsvenskan to the SHL in his career, and now he’s set to try to help a third team make the jump. Djurgardens IF, a prominent Swedish club recently relegated to the Allvenskan, has announced the signing of Glad to a two-year deal. Glad, a 30-year-old blueliner with extensive experience in the top two divisions of Swedish hockey, should be able to help add some valuable experience to a Djurgarden team filled with talented prospects, such as 2022 first-rounders Liam Ohgren and Noah Ostlund.
  • Trey Bradley, a star scorer in the ECHL, is headed to Sweden to continue his professional career. Ostersunds IK, a club in the HockeyAllsvenskan, has announced the signing of Bradley on one of the team’s social media channels. The 26-year-old has scored 82 points in his last 68 ECHL games, and heads to Sweden now with a strong track record of being a difference-maker at North America’s third tier of pro hockey.
  • Olli Palola is switching from Liiga to the SHL. The Finnish scorer, who has a track record of production in Liiga, the KHL, and the SHL has transferred from HIFK Helsinki to Timra IK. The 34-year-old scored just six points in 21 games in the Finnish capital this season, and now heads to Sweden with the hope that a change of scenery can get him back to his old scoring ways.
  • Carolina Hurricanes prospect Simon Forsmark could also be on the move to Timra. One of two Hurricanes’ 2022 fourth-round picks, Forsmark has struggled to see the lineup consistently this season for Orebro. Johan Svensson of SportExpressen reports that Forsmark has signed with Timra, leaving Orebro. The move is presumably with the intention of earning more ice time, which is likely of interest to the Hurricanes who will want to see Forsmark put forth as much tape as possible as they eventually weigh whether to sign him to an entry-level deal.
  • Veteran minor league defenseman Mathieu Brodeur, a 2008 third-round pick of the Arizona Coyotes and 2020-21 Kelly Cup Champion, has chosen to hang up his skates. In an announcement released by the ECHL’s Trois-Rivieres Lions, Brodeur detailed the reasons behind his choice. The 32-year-old defenseman finishes a career that spanned from San Antonio to Slovakia and France playing for the ECHL affiliate of his hometown team, the Montreal Canadiens.
  • The ECHL’s Savannah Ghost Pirates have acquired forward Dylan Sadowy from the Iowa Heartlanders, per the ECHL’s official transactions page. The Heartlanders claimed Sadowy off of waivers yesterday, and have now dealt him to Georgia without having dressed him for a single game. Sadowy, the 81st overall pick at the 2014 draft, is a Calder Cup champion and former ECHL All-Star. He scored 50 points in 51 games for the Tulsa Oilers last season, but was waived by the team this year having scored just 14 points in 30 games. He’ll now get a change of scenery in Savannah, joining a team that is currently struggling to find consistent scorers.
  • The ECHL’s Wheeling Nailers have released defenseman Roy Kanda. The 22-year-old defenseman has taken a unique developmental path to North American professional hockey. He hails from Hokkaido, Japan, and he played hockey in Japan before heading to Finland to continue his development and has begun his pro career in the SPHL. With three games of ECHL experience now under his belt, Kanda will look to earn another look in the East Coast league by continuing his SPHL career.
  • The ECHL’s Allen Americans have signed goaltender Justin Kapelmaster. The 27-year-old won the Kelly Cup with Allen in 2020-21, before bouncing around to four additional teams in the ECHL. Kapelmaster signed with the Reading Royals in August and earned a PTO with the AHL’s Hershey Bears. In December, Kapelmaster was released by the Royals, who elected to run with 22-year-old Nolan Maier as their starter. He signed with the Jacksonville Icemen shortly afterward but didn’t get into a game there before being released on New Year’s Eve. Now he lands back in Allen and will look to recapture the success he found in his first go-around with the Americans.
  • The EIHL’s Nottingham Panthers have released veteran defenseman Craig Moore. The Scottish blueliner has been a fixture in the United Kingdom’s top league for several seasons, suiting up for the Cardiff Devils, Fife Flyers, Glasgow Clan, Dudee Stars, and the Panthers. Moore has played almost 250 games in the EIHL in his career, and will likely look for another contract in that league in order to continue his professional career.

This page will be updated throughout the day.

Ryan O’Reilly Hopes To Stay With St. Louis

January 26, 2023 at 4:48 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

There are two big question marks for the St. Louis Blues as they head into the trade deadline. What happens to Vladimir Tarasenko, a player who has spent his entire career with one organization, and what happens to captain Ryan O’Reilly, the addition that put them over the top a few years ago?

Tarasenko returned from injury this week, topping 17 minutes in his first game back, a loss to the Buffalo Sabres. Losses are piling up for the Blues these days, who are now sitting sixth in the Central Division with a 23-22-3 record. The 31-year-old sniper once submitted a trade request to try and start fresh somewhere else, and it seems like that’s where the relationship is headed again. A Tarasenko trade is likely, unless the next few weeks hold a remarkable turnaround for the Blues.

For O’Reilly, the other notable pending free agent forward that has been the subject of trade rumors, things aren’t so clear. He isn’t back on the ice yet, nearly a month after breaking his foot in a New Year’s Eve game against the Minnesota Wild. He also isn’t ready to say goodbye to St. Louis, where he won a Conn Smythe trophy en route to the Stanley Cup.

In an exclusive interview with Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic, O’Reilly was clear:

This is where I want to be. I hope I don’t get moved, but I think things will probably progress, especially with the deadline coming up and the talks with that. We’ll see how it goes. We’re starting to get into that.

“That” in this case is extension talks, though it doesn’t seem like things are very far along at this point. O’Reilly went as far as saying he would give the Blues a discount, given his success there.

But even with a team-friendly deal, can the Blues afford to pass up the assets they would get for O’Reilly at the deadline?

The veteran center will turn 32 in a few weeks, and has seen his offensive production almost disappear this season. A player who was once known for his playmaking ability, he has just six assists through 37 games. Ten goals puts him on his regular pace, but it just hasn’t been the same for O’Reilly or the Blues this year.

He also carries no trade protection in the seven-year, $52.5MM deal that will expire at the end of this season. It wouldn’t be the first time he finds himself on the move. O’Reilly was originally drafted by the Colorado Avalanche, before a 2015 trade took him to the Buffalo Sabres. Three years after that he was on his way to St. Louis, and now after five years with the Blues, he might be headed to another team.

There are few players in the league that seem so perfectly built for the playoffs as O’Reilly. At his best, he can be one of the most productive two-way centers in the league, shutting down opponents and driving offense at the same time. That’s what he was in 2019, when he led all postseason players with 23 points. Just last year he had seven goals and 12 points in 12 games for the Blues, and that success will be intriguing to contenders looking to beef up a second or third line.

If he had his way, there would be no trade. O’Reilly wants to stay in St. Louis, but it’s not up to him.

Arizona Coyotes Reassign Milos Kelemen

January 26, 2023 at 3:45 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Jan 26: After making his NHL debut, Kelemen is on his way back to the minor leagues. He played just over ten minutes, recorded three hits and generated one shot on goal.

Jan 24: Last spring, the Arizona Coyotes reached an agreement with a young, undrafted forward who had found success all over Europe. Milos Kelemen signed a two-year, entry-level contract and came over to North America for his first taste of AHL action.

Now, Kelemen has been recalled to the NHL, after 39 relatively strong games with the Tucson Roadrunners.

Part of the historic Slovakian Olympic team that earned their first hockey medal last year, the 23-year-old Kelemen has 20 points in 39 games for the Roadrunners this season. The Coyotes opened some room by sending Michael Carcone back to the minors yesterday, though Matias Maccelli and Lawson Crouse are also expected to return soon from injury.

It remains to be seen whether Kelemen will actually get into a game, but he represents another chance that the Coyotes front office is willing to take as they search everywhere for young assets. Eventually, the odds are good that they will find a hidden gem to add to their stable of high draft picks.

New York Rangers Extend Ben Harpur

January 26, 2023 at 1:04 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The New York Rangers have reached an agreement with depth defenseman Ben Harpur on a two-year extension, which will carry an average annual value of $787.5K, according to Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press.

Harpur, 28, has rarely ever seen regular minutes in the NHL, but seems to have found a bit of a home in New York. The big, 6’6″ defenseman has now played in 18 games this season, all of them since the middle of December.

Signed to a one-year, two-way deal in the offseason, this contract is a very nice reward for the depth defender, who lands some security and stability. A veteran of 174 NHL games, he’s now locked into a seventh or eighth-defenseman role on a good team and will make some good money in the process.

For the Rangers, this doesn’t really move the needle. His cap hit can be entirely buried in the minor leagues if necessary, and Harpur isn’t going to be playing big minutes or providing many points. In his 18 appearances this year he has averaged just over 13 minutes a night, while putting up three points – including just his second NHL goal.

Still, if they like him as an organizational piece, there’s no reason why not to sign a contract like this to lock him up. The deal is low-risk low-reward but keeps a player in the picture that the coaching staff is comfortable icing when needed.

Vancouver Canucks Extend Andrei Kuzmenko

January 26, 2023 at 12:40 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The Vancouver Canucks have worked through some negotiations quite quickly, reaching an agreement with pending free agent Andrei Kuzmenko. The two-year contract extension will carry an average annual value of $5.5MM, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Friedman adds that there will be a 12-team no-trade clause included in the deal, which starts next season.

There are two ways to look at a deal like this. It brings back a player who has found incredible success in his first year, scoring 21 goals and 43 points in 47 games. The $5.5MM cap hit is a reasonable amount for the player that Kuzmenko has been this year, and keeps him from walking in the offseason as an unrestricted free agent.

The Canucks can now staple him to the wing of Elias Pettersson and have the makings of a legitimate top line through 2024-25.

On the other hand, the rest of the Vancouver roster doesn’t appear to be ready to compete during that span. Even with the “major surgery” that president Jim Rutherford suggested, which looks more and more like the exit of captain Bo Horvat, it’s hard to see the Canucks contending next season or the year after.

The pipeline isn’t filled with elite talent, the bad contracts aren’t coming off the books, and right now, they have a club good enough for 27th in the league.

Trading Kuzmenko at the deadline, then, appeared to be a better option. Given his bargain-basement salary thanks to a one-year entry-level contract, Kuzmenko could have been a target for any contender in the league. The return would have helped the prospect pool and potentially sped up a rebuild that seems inevitable, even if the front office won’t admit it.

That said, a two-year deal doesn’t necessarily mean Kuzmenko won’t be traded. It just means he won’t be traded right now. He’ll only be 29 when the deal is set to expire and if the Canucks are still not good, will still likely fetch a strong return on the trade market.

Given Rutherford’s belief that the team can be competitive again in under three years, this deal makes a lot of sense. It gives them another shot with a new head coach, and if it still doesn’t work, they can move on without much issue.

Perhaps the surprise is that Kuzmenko would agree to a two-year deal at all. After all, his performance this season would likely warrant a longer commitment if he wanted it. But this way, he can cash in for the next two years and potentially hit the market as an under-30 winger when the salary cap goes up. If he can keep producing, it might end up a savvy move for the undrafted Russian, who will be set up for a massive deal down the road.
