COVID Protocol Related Absences: 03/16/21

March 16, 2021 at 4:22 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

Each day, the NHL will publicly release the list of players that are unavailable to their respective teams due to being in COVID-19 Protocol. Here is the list so far:

NY Islanders – Noah Dobson
NY Rangers – Phil Di Giuseppe, Pavel Buchnevich, Adam Fox

As a reminder, inclusion on this list does not mean that a player has tested positive for Coronavirus or even that they have been confirmed as a close contact to another positive person. Included in the NHL’s list of possible reasons for someone being on the list is are the following:

(1) an initial positive test which remains unconfirmed until confirmatory testing is completed pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (2) mandated isolation for symptomatic individuals pursuant to the Positive Test Protocol; (3) required quarantine as a high-risk close contact in accordance with the Positive Test Protocol; (4) isolation based on a confirmed positive test result and/or; (5) quarantine for travel or other reasons as outlined in the COVID-19 Protocol

Players removed today: Kyle Turris, Edmonton Oilers; Will Butcher, New Jersey Devils

No new additions so far today and a couple of names come off the list. Importantly, Turris ended up being the only Oiler that hit the list. The North Division hasn’t had a single game postponed so far, a record that the league would obviously like to keep intact as long as possible.

2021 NHL Draft Unlikely To Be Pushed Back

March 16, 2021 at 2:20 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 7 Comments

March 16: Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet confirms that the draft will not be pushed back. The event will go on as scheduled near the end of July.

March 9: It had been trending this way for a while, but Darren Dreger of TSN reports that the 2021 NHL Entry Draft is not expected to be pushed back. Though there was considerable support from general managers all across the league, the substantial obstacles will make the league keep the event scheduled for this July. Concerns over service time, draft rights, and delaying the top prospects from an October NHL debut were all among the many complexities moving the draft would have created.

Of course, this decision will not come without ramifications. The OHL, one of the biggest sources of NHL draft picks every year, has not played a single game this season. Even if they do sneak in a shortened schedule later this spring, evaluation of the prospects will not be nearly as detailed as a normal year. Some top draft prospects from the league have taken their talents overseas in the interim, but for many prospective mid-round picks, it has been a full calendar year without any competitive action.

The WHL and QMJHL have also not played their full allotment of games, while the NCAA season was also truncated. Potential first-overall pick Owen Power played just 24 games with the University of Michigan during his freshman season. Compare that to someone like Quinn Hughes, who got 37 NCAA games with Michigan plus a World Junior tournament during his draft year. While the consensus is pretty clear on Power’s upside, what about some of the lesser-known college names like Dovar Tinling, who managed just 11 games with the University of Vermont. He was included in NHL Central Scouting’s players to watch as a second or third-round candidate, but it will be extremely difficult to evaluate his true potential at this point. Tinling only just turned 18 a few days ago.

There are names like Mason McTavish, who is still a potential first-round pick but had to play in Switzerland this season as he waited for the OHL to resume. Certainly, a dozen games in Europe won’t give scouts the same amount of information that a full season in the OHL would have.

With the draft staying put, it will be interesting to see how valuable picks are viewed at the upcoming deadline. There’s a chance that first-round talents slip through to the mid-rounds, but also an increased chance of completely whiffing with a player that hasn’t competed in a year.

Some very clever accounting by the defending champs, plus a little help from core players like Tom Brady.

Vegas Golden Knights Sign Daniil Miromanov

March 16, 2021 at 12:52 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Vegas Golden Knights have added an interesting name off the free agent market, signing Daniil Miromanov to a one-year entry-level contract for the 2021-22 season. The defenseman went undrafted out of the QMJHL and has already played in the ECHL, Czech league and the KHL.

Miromanov, 23, played this season with Sochi HC in the KHL, recording 29 points in 58 games. Though listed as a defenseman now, he has actually played forward before and has used those offensive instincts to rack up high point totals. The Golden Knights have introduced him as a defenseman and that is likely where he’ll play in their organization, though his versatility is an interesting nugget to keep an eye on.

He will not be eligible to join the Golden Knights this season but could sign a tryout with the Henderson Silver Knights to get familiar with the organization. The last time he played in North America he racked up 40 points in 49 games with the Manchester Monarchs of the ECHL, but it’ll be a tougher task this time around at the higher levels.

Montreal Not Looking To Add Defensemen

March 16, 2021 at 12:40 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

When Ben Chiarot needed surgery to repair a broken hand, many speculated that the Montreal Canadiens would go out and acquire another defenseman through trade. Mattias Ekholm was immediately linked to the team, though the financial fit never did seem right. Ekholm has another year on his contract and the Canadiens have already spent big on the back end, with four players earning at least $3.5MM this season and next.

Speaking to the media today including Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic, Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin confirmed that they are not looking for Chiarot’s replacement, especially because the big defenseman could be back before the end of the regular season. Chiarot was given a six to eight-week timeline, but Bergevin believes it will be closer to six. Moving him to long-term injured reserve could open space now, but the Canadiens would be in quite the pickle should Chiarot be ready to return before the playoffs.

In fact, Bergevin downplayed the trade market entirely, stressing how little cap flexibility the team has this season. That means this could be the Montreal roster for the rest of the year, save for some minor tweaks.

On defense, the team already had an NHL-ready player to step into Chiarot’s absence with Victor Mete, but he actually didn’t play last night either. Instead, Xavier Ouellet came into the lineup and logged just over 13 minutes in his season debut, further complicating the situation with the 22-year-old Mete. After playing 171 games for the Canadiens over the last three seasons, he’s been on the outside looking in for much of this year, playing just seven games. His agent made headlines earlier in the year suggesting that a change of scenery would be welcomed, something that seems likely to come up again if he continues to sit in place of Ouellet.

Still, it doesn’t sound like Bergevin will be making any sweeping changes—though he has been known to immediately contradict his public statements in the past. The fact is the financial situation all around the league will make trades or any kind difficult.

Toronto Maple Leafs Willing To Trade Top Prospect

March 16, 2021 at 11:54 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 6 Comments

Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas held his midseason availability today as the team enjoys a few off days in a row and was asked many questions about the upcoming trade deadline. Dubas admitted that most of his talks have been about forwards and that the Canadian quarantine protocols will push him to make a deal sooner rather than later, but one answer was quite clear. When asked if he was willing to trade a top prospect at this year’s deadline, Dubas flatly responded “yes” with no further explanation. For a manager that always seems to have time to expand on an answer, that was telling.

While there may be some debate as to which are considered “top prospects” in the Maple Leafs system, names like Nicholas Robertson, Rasmus Sandin, and Rodion Amirov are likely among them. It could also perhaps include Timothy Liljegren, the 17th overall pick from 2017, but his status in the Maple Leafs organization isn’t exactly clear as he continues to be denied many opportunities at the NHL level. Darren Dreger of TSN lists those four together and suggests they are in the same category as the team’s first-round pick this year, available for a “near perfect fit.”

Dubas, who has usually spoken out against the idea of acquiring rentals at the deadline, also mentioned that this season may be one that it is considered, thanks to a squeezed cap moving forward. The Maple Leafs are also obviously viewing themselves as contenders in the North Division and perhaps see this as a real opportunity to advance deep in the playoffs—something they haven’t been able to do for so long.

The team doesn’t have much cap flexibility to work with at this year’s deadline, though sending out some money could solve that problem. If they are willing to move a top prospect or high draft pick as well, Toronto will have to be considered on basically any of the high-end rentals this year. Just a few days ago our PHR community voted Taylor Hall as the top rental available, with names like Bobby Ryan, Eric Staal, and Kyle Palmieri all coming in on the next tier. Any of those forwards might have an impact for Toronto, though each come with their own complications.

Chicago Blackhawks Sign Josiah Slavin

March 16, 2021 at 11:09 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Chicago Blackhawks have watched Jaccob Slavin and the Carolina Hurricanes run through the Central Division this season, so perhaps they’ve gotten the next best thing. The Blackhawks have signed Josiah Slavin, Jaccob’s younger brother, to a two-year entry-level contract that will start in the 2021-22 season. The young forward will immediately report to the Rockford IceHogs on an amateur tryout.

Slavin, 22, just finished his sophomore season at Colorado College where he recorded 13 points in 22 games. A seventh-round pick of the Blackhawks back in 2018, he’s obviously done enough to show he’s worthy of an entry-level deal.

Almost the exact same size as his brother, the younger Slavin will get his first taste of professional hockey in the coming weeks. He will not be eligible for a call-up to Chicago until next season, but even if he were there is still plenty of development to go. The Blackhawks will have plenty of opportunities for young players in the coming years and can only hope that a late-round lottery ticket like Slavin becomes an NHL regular.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 03/16/21

March 16, 2021 at 10:10 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day:

West Division

  • The Anaheim Ducks were once again busy on the shuffling front today.  Per CapFriendly, Anthony Stolarz was recalled on an emergency basis with John Gibson dealing with a lower-body injury while Trevor Zegras, Sam Steel, and Andy Welinski were also recalled.  To make room on the roster, David Backes, who cleared waivers yesterday, was sent to the taxi squad.
  • With Antti Raanta being unavailable to play tonight due to a lower-body injury that has him listed as day-to-day, the Arizona Coyotes recalled Ivan Prosevtov from the taxi squad.  Also being brought up to the active roster was Hudson Fasching with Michael Chaput being sent to the taxi squad.
  • The Colorado Avalanche have recalled Greg Pateryn and Logan O’Connor from the taxi squad on an emergency basis, per CapFriendly.  This has been a frequent pair of moves on recent game days with the duo likely to appear here tomorrow as being sent down.
  • The San Jose Sharks have sent several players to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  John Leonard, Fredrik Claesson, and Fredrik Handemark are all on the reserve group while Stefan Noesen has been sent to AHL San Jose.

North Division

  • The Ottawa Senators have re-assigned Clark Bishop, Filip Gustavsson, and Matthew Peca to the team’s taxi squad while moving Kevin Mandolese back to the AHL. The Senators are off today after their overtime loss against the Canucks and will likely recall several of these players tomorrow.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs have moved Scott Sabourin and Joseph Woll back to the AHL while they enjoy a four-day break between games. Given that they waived Jimmy Vesey earlier today, he might be headed to the taxi squad to fill at least one of the vacant spots. Alex Galchenyuk and Timothy Liljegren were also recalled to the taxi squad with Calle Rosen going to the minors, per CapFriendly.
  • The Calgary Flames have recalled Dominik Simon from the taxi squad while sending Derek Ryan and Oliver Kylington down, per CapFriendly.  It’s a move they’ve made on non-game days recently and they will likely reverse it before Wednesday’s game against Edmonton.
  • The Montreal Canadiens have loaned Alexander Romanov and Xavier Ouellet to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  The two will likely be recalled for Wednesday’s contest against Winnipeg.  Meanwhile, Hayden Verbeek was loaned back to AHL Laval.
  • The Winnipeg Jets have loaned Logan Stanley back to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  He will likely be recalled for tomorrow’s game against Montreal.  Winnipeg also sent Mikhail Berdin to AHL Manitoba.

Central Division

  • The Carolina Hurricanes have recalled Joey Keane and Beck Warm from the AHL, bringing them up to the NHL taxi squad. Warm, 21, was just signed by the team earlier this month after impressing early with the Chicago Wolves as an undrafted free agent signing. Now in six games, Warm has posted a .944 save percentage with the Wolves, winning five times.  Alex Nedeljkovic, Jake Bean, and Morgan Geekie were all recalled from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly, with Jake Gardiner being sent down.
  • The Dallas Stars have brought up Taylor Fedun from the taxi squad.  The 32-year-old played in 27 regular season games last season plus 11 games in the bubble but has yet to see NHL action so far in 2020-21.
  • The Detroit Red Wings have recalled Evgeny Svechnikov and Frans Nielsen from the taxi squad.   Meanwhile, they also shuffled up their taxi squad goalies, sending Calvin Pickard to AHL Grand Rapids while recalling Kaden Fulcher to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.
  • The Nashville Predators have brought back Michael McCarron from the taxi squad while returning Alexandre Carrier and Ben Harpur to the taxi squad.  McCarron has played in four games with Nashville so far this season.
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning have recalled Ross Colton from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  To stay cap-compliant, Spencer Martin was sent down to the taxi squad.

East Division

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled Frederick Gaudreau from the taxi squad, moving John Marino to injured reserve to make room. Marino’s placement is retroactive to March 9, meaning he can come off whenever healthy. The team has also recalled Radim Zohorna to the taxi squad.
  • The Buffalo Sabres have shuffled up their back end, recalling Brandon Davidson and Henri Jokiharju from the taxi squad.  Going down to make room were Jacob Bryson and forward Rasmus Asplund.
  • The Boston Bruins recalled Oskar Steen from the taxi squad to make his NHL debut tonight, relays Fluto Shinzawa of The Athletic. The 23-year-old was a sixth-round pick back in 2016 and has eight points in 12 AHL games this season.
  • The New York Islanders have promoted Oliver Wahlstrom, Kieffer Bellows, and Austin Czarnik from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  All three have been frequently sent back and forth through the first half of the season.
  • With the New York Rangers off tonight, they have made their usual long list of taxi squad assignments.  Going down are Kaapo Kakko, Tarmo Reunanen, and Jack Johnson while Jonny Brodzinski was sent to the minors, per CapFriendly.  They also swapped taxi squad goalies, sending Keith Kinkaid down while recalling Adam Huska.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers have loaned Alex Lyon and Nate Prosser to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Prosser played just under 12 minutes on Monday against the Rangers while Lyon hasn’t seen any NHL action so far this season.

This page will be updated throughout the day.

Snapshots: Jets, Americans, Kallionkieli

March 15, 2021 at 7:36 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Winnipeg Jets are in action tonight against the Montreal Canadiens after going 7-2-1 in their last 10, climbing all the way to second in the North Division. One might assume that the team is looking to supplement their imposing roster in a trade and do it soon, given the two-week quarantine any newcomer will require if he comes from a U.S.-based team.

Speaking with reporters including Ken Wiebe of Sportsnet, Jets GM Kevin Cheveldayoff explained that he is willing to make another deal to improve the club if the fit is right, regardless of COVID protocols and the wait. Mattias Ekholm has been linked to the Jets in recent days, but Cheveldayoff wouldn’t comment on any specifics.

  • The Rochester Americans are still not playing thanks to at least one positive coronavirus test and have announced a new postponement for this week. The team’s Wednesday game against the Syracuse Crunch has been postponed with no current makeup date, while Saturday’s game that was already pushed will now be played on May 3. The Americans players continue to be unavailable for the Buffalo Sabres as they stay in the protocol.
  • The Henderson Silver Knights have a new player to use after Marcus Kallionkielli was reassigned from Finland to the AHL today. The 19-year-old was a fifth-round pick in 2019 and spent part of last season with the Brandon Wheat Kings of the WHL. In nine games with HIFK’s junior squad in Finland this season, he recorded five points.

Pekka Rinne Hoping To Retire A Predator

March 15, 2021 at 6:44 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 7 Comments

If any goalie-needing contenders were watching today, Pekka Rinne put on quite a show. In a match that the Nashville Predators seemed destined to lose, down several key players against the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning, Rinne stopped 38 of 39 shots en route to a 4-1 victory. The 38-year-old seemed to turn back the clock and showed why he was a Vezina winner not so long ago.

But if he has it his way, Rinne won’t be going anywhere at the deadline. The goaltender told Adam Vingan of The Athletic that despite a long Cup-less career to this point and Nashville struggling this season, he wants to retire a Predator. The veteran goaltender was listed as an “untouchable” by Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet last month and the team does not want to move him, according to Vingan.

Right now, they don’t really have a choice, given Juuse Saros is out dealing with an injury and there aren’t any other goaltenders in the system with real experience. But seeing Rinne go anywhere else before he hangs up his skates certainly wouldn’t seem right, given what he has accomplished for the Predators organization.

Debuting with the team in the 2005-06 season, Rinne’s rise to NHL starting goaltender is something of legend these days. GM David Poile spent an eighth-round pick on the goaltender after scout Janne Kekalainen convinced him of his upside, despite such few viewings. By the 2008-09 season, he was the team’s starter and never looked back. He now sits 32nd in all-time games played and 20th in wins.

All of those have come in a Predators uniform and that doesn’t appear to be changing.
