Craig Anderson’s Trade Stock Plummeting

January 13, 2020 at 8:10 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

Both the Ottawa Senators and goaltender Craig Anderson have an interest in the veteran’s trade value with the NHL Trade Deadline approaching next month. The Senators are again outside of the playoff picture and looking to deal any impending free agents for futures. Anderson meanwhile is 38 years old and has never come close to winning a Stanley Cup, reaching the postseason five times in his 17-year career and only twice advancing past the first round. Both sides would seemingly like to see a deal made.

Yet, as The Ottawa Sun’s Bruce Garrioch writes, Anderson’s play of late may be ruining that chance for both he and his team. Anderson has allowed four or more goals in each of his last four games, all of which have ended in Senators’ losses. His save percentage has dropped below .900, while his goals against average has jumped to 3.27. Entering this season after back-to-back difficult campaigns, Anderson needed consistently strong play to redeem his value. Instead, the long-time Ottawa keeper looks like a player whose days as a reliable contributor are over.

However, Anderson remains “open-minded” to the idea of a trade and the Senators certainly would like to get anything out of him on the market, if at all possible. However, if Anderson’s value is to improve at all over the next six weeks leading up to the deadline, Ottawa must be wiling to but the veteran in net. Anders Nilsson received the lion’s share of starts early in the season, so much so that he has one fewer appearance than Anderson despite being out with an injury since mid-December. Even with Nilsson sidelined, Anderson has been sharing the net, now with young Marcus Hogberg. Hogberg has played in nine games this season, seven since Nilsson’s injury, and of late has been at the opposite end of the spectrum of Anderson, allowing two goals or fewer in each of his last three appearances. Despite these efforts, if the Sens want to move Anderson they must put him in the lineup, even once Nilsson returns to action.

If Ottawa isn’t willing to give Anderson the chance to improve his trade stock, they likely will struggle to get anything back for him. The rental goalie market is far from vacant; there are upwards of a half-dozen goalies who could easily be on the move by the end of February. The Chicago Blackhawks have at least one keeper that they could move, San Jose’s Aaron Dell and Montreal’s Keith Kinkaid are established backups who will be made available, and Anderson is not even the only gray-haired veteran on the block, with the Ducks’ Ryan Miller and Red Wings’ Jimmy Howard potentially available. There are more goalies for sale than there are backup buyers and not all of these names will move. If the Senators and Anderson hope that he is one of the few to go, things need to change – and soon.

Zack Kassian Receives Two-Game Suspension

January 13, 2020 at 6:20 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 1 Comment

The NHL Department of Player Safety has made a decision on how best to reprimand Edmonton Oilers forward Zack Kassian for his recent altercation with the Calgary Flames’ Matthew Tkachuk. After listening to Kassian’s side in a hearing earlier today, Player Safety has announced a two-game suspension for Kassian. It is the fourth suspension of Kassian’s NHL career, the third by Player Safety, but it is also the lightest. The league explained their decision as follows:

[Tkachuk] delivers a hard check to the shoulder of Kassian, which knocks him to the ice. Kassian gets back to his feet and begins looking to get to Tkachuk… Kassian attempts to grab Tkachuk, who is focused on following the puck up the ice for an offensive chance. Kassian grabs him by the collar from behind, takes him down to the ice, and throws a series of forceful punches directed at the head of Tkachuk, who is an unwilling combatant. This is a violation of Rule 46.2… which states: ‘The aggressor in an altercation shall be the player who continues to throw punches in an attempt to inflict punishment on his opponent who is in a defenseless position or who is an unwilling combatant.’ It is important to note that at no point does Tkachuk have the opportunity to square up, drop his gloves, or do anything other than attempt to protect himself from the punches being thrown.

Kassian acknowledges he was seeking retribution for this hit and previous hits thrown during the game. While he acknowledges frustration, players are not excused from grossly violating league rules in retribution or retaliation for hits thrown on them – legal or otherwise.

In reaching their decision, Player Safety likely took into account the aggressive play of Tkachuk earlier in the game, including a questionable hit of his own. They likely also rewarded Kassian for staying off of their radar over the past few years. Nonetheless, the Oilers’ grinder will still have to sit for a pair of contests, which includes an important divisional clash with the Arizona Coyotes. Edmonton will miss Kassian’s physical play in those games, but also his offense in what is already the veteran’s best scoring season to date.

All-Star Notes: Vasilevskiy, Letang, PWHPA

January 13, 2020 at 2:44 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The NHL has announced that Tampa Bay Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy will replace Tuukka Rask at the upcoming All-Star Game, though no reason was given for why the Boston Bruins netminder will miss the game. If Rask isn’t injured and doesn’t have a league-accepted excuse for missing the game, he would be subject to a one-game suspension.

Vasilevskiy joins Frederik Andersen as the goaltenders for the Atlantic Division after recently going on an incredible run. The reigning Vezina Trophy winner has won his last eight appearances, posting a .946 save percentage in those games. Even more recent were back-to-back shutouts last week that earned him first star honors from the league.

  • In the absence of Alex Ovechkin, who informed the league that he will not be attending the All-Star festivities, Kris Letang has been named captain of the Metropolitan team. Letang was not even originally named to the team, but added when the Jake Guentzel, Pittsburgh’s original selection, suffered a season-ending injury.
  • The All-Star competitions will not only feature NHL players this season, as members of the Professional Women’s Hockey Players’ Association will also take part in a 3-on-3 game during the first day of the event. Hailey Salvian of The Athletic (subscription required) reports the latest details on the game, which is expected to only include players from the PWHPA, a group currently boycotting the NWHL and showcasing their talent in the “Dream Gap Tour.” Members including Hilary Knight, Kendall Coyne-Schofield and Brianna Decker have been included at the All-Star festivities in the past—with Coyne-Schofield even being an official competitor in the fastest skater event last year.

Morgan Rielly Out Eight Weeks With Broken Foot

January 13, 2020 at 2:05 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

When the Toronto Maple Leafs recalled Rasmus Sandin from the minor leagues today, fans were excited about him potentially replacing the injured Jake Muzzin. It’s not Muzzin he’s replacing however as instead Toronto has announced that Morgan Rielly suffered a broken foot during last night’s game and will be out at least eight weeks.

The loss of Rielly is a tremendous blow to the Maple Leafs’ season, especially as they try to navigate a recent rough patch. The team now sits just a single point ahead of the Florida Panthers after being embarrassed last night and have lost three in a row to fall four points behind the second place Tampa Bay Lightning. Without Muzzin and Rielly for the next several weeks, the team suddenly looks thinner than ever on defense, a position that was already not their strength.

In Rielly’s absence, Travis Dermott will likely see an increased role but it’s not clear how the other two left defense spots will shake out. Martin Marincin was recently extended by the team but has struggled when asked to log heavy minutes in the NHL, while Sandin is still just 19 and has only six games of NHL experience under his belt.

It’s the unknown of Sandin that makes things interesting, given how much success he has had under Sheldon Keefe when they were together in the minor leagues. The 29th overall pick from 2018 recorded 28 points in 44 games last season as one of the youngest players in the AHL, and was even better in the Calder Cup playoffs. This season he was once again excellent before leaving for the World Juniors, where he was arguably the best defenseman in the tournament logging huge minutes for Sweden.

Still, the AHL and World Juniors are not the same as the NHL. With Toronto in a battle for every point just to qualify for the playoffs, the team may have to go out and get some more experienced hands to help out. How exactly they can afford it will be a creative task for the front office, given how complicated their cap structure has been this season moving players on and off long-term injured reserve. They also don’t have their first-round pick, thanks to an offseason trade with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Minor Transactions: 01/13/20

January 13, 2020 at 11:33 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Five games grace the NHL schedule this evening, including a match between the best and worst of the Western Conference. The St. Louis Blues will welcome in the Anaheim Ducks for a game between two clubs moving in opposite directions. Even though the Ducks are 26 points behind the Blues in the standings, nothing is guaranteed in the NHL. As the entire league prepares for tonight, we’ll keep track of all the moves:

  • The New York Islanders have recalled Sebastian Aho from the minor leagues. The young defenseman hasn’t yet played an NHL contest this year, but does have 22 games of experience from the 2017-18 season. Also up from the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers is forward Otto Koivula, who has played in six games with Isles, but has been held scoreless.
  • Rasmus Sandin is back with the Toronto Maple Leafs, recalled after the team’s embarrassing loss last night. Sandin is four games away from burning the first year of his entry-level contract, but the Maple Leafs haven’t been able to keep the puck out of their net recently with Jake Muzzin out with a broken foot.
  • The San Jose Sharks have sent Lukas Radil to the minor leagues, while bringing up Joachim Blichfeld. The seventh-round pick has been excellent in the minor leagues this season, really launching himself onto the map of NHL prospects for the Sharks.

Lafreniere, Stuetzle Lead Respective Scouting Lists

January 13, 2020 at 10:27 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

The NHL has released their Central Scouting midterm rankings for 2020 draft eligible prospects. Alexis Lafreniere leads the North American group and is still the prospective first overall selection in June’s draft. The International list may carry some surprise however, as it is Tim Stuetzle, not Lucas Raymond or Alexander Holtz, who leads the group.

Stuetzle plays for Mannheim in the German DEL and has been flying up draft boards all season. The 6’1″ left-shot forward is nearly a point-per-game player at the professional level despite being just 17 (he’ll turn 18 later this week), with five goals and 23 points in 26 games. Add in an outstanding performance at the World Juniors tournament where he seemed to create offense at will for one of the strongest German teams we’ve ever seen, and his ranking at the top is deserved.

Behind Stuetzle are Raymond, Holtz and Anton Lundell, the latter of which was unable to attend the World Juniors and show what he could do against the best players of his age group in the world. Lundell is having a great season for HIFK in Finland however, and is another name to consider near the top of the draft.

The North American rankings don’t carry much surprise, as Lafreniere is followed by Quinton Byfield, Jamie Drysdale and Cole Perfetti as expected. Though there are several players who could move up the board by season’s end, those four are all expected to challenge for top-10 status when June’s selection process gets underway.

Among goaltenders—who are ranked separately—Nico Daws leads the North American list after winning gold with the Canadian World Junior team. Yaroslav Askarov, who won silver with the Russians, is tops on the International list and should be a first-round selection.

Alec Martinez Available For Trade

January 13, 2020 at 9:45 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Los Angeles Kings will be a team to watch at the 2020 trade deadline once again, as they continue to try and find a way to turn things around. The team sits just a point ahead of the Anaheim Ducks for last in the Western Conference, with little to celebrate on a nightly basis. Last year at this time the Kings decided to move on from defenseman Jake Muzzin despite having him under contract for an additional season, and Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic now writes that they could make a similar move this time around.

Alec Martinez is the lead subject of LeBrun’s latest column (subscription required), as the scribe indicates that the Kings would be open to moving the defenseman. Martinez is signed through the 2020-21 season and carries a $4MM cap hit, but the Kings are obviously not going to be competing for the Stanley Cup this year and could cash out early. One of LeBrun’s sources indicated it might take a “second and a prospect” to get the 32-year old.

Martinez has been a solid contributor for the Kings for more than a decade now, debuting in 2009 before joining the lineup on a full-time basis the following year. His most noteworthy moment with the team is obviously the 2014 Stanley Cup-winning goal against the New York Rangers, when he jumped into the rush and cleaned up a rebound in double overtime.

That ability to play at both ends of the rink should be intriguing to many teams looking to shore up their blueline before the playoffs, as is his ability to play either defensive position. Martinez is a left-handed shot but was forced to play the right side quite a bit during his time with the Kings, at times beside the aforementioned Muzzin.

For Kings fans, it is important to remember that among the current roster defensemen, only Martinez, Drew Doughty and Matt Roy are actually signed for next year. If they decide to move in a different direction, youngsters like Tobias Bjornfot and Kale Clague may be asked to play substantial roles on the team next year.

Five Key Stories: 1/6/20 – 1/12/20

January 12, 2020 at 8:59 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The first full week of 2020 is in the books and there were several newsworthy events around the NHL which are highlighted in the key stories of the week.

More Changes In New Jersey: While in-season coaching changes happen with some regularity, GM changes usually occur in the offseason.  That wasn’t the case for New Jersey as they fired GM Ray Shero partway through his fifth year with the team.  The timing is particularly surprising as it comes less than a month after trading away Taylor Hall while he also let John Hynes go as head coach (more on him momentarily).   Tom Fitzgerald will take over as interim GM and will likely be tasked with shepherding the team through the upcoming trade deadline where they will have several veterans that will likely garner interest around the league.

Another Coaching Change: With the Predators underachieving considerably in the first half of the season, GM David Poile decided to make a change behind the bench, relieving Peter Laviolette of his duties as head coach, just days after saying that he wasn’t planning on making a coaching change.  Laviolette spent five and a half seasons in Nashville, compiling a 248-143-60 record while helping lead them to the Presidents’ Trophy in 2017-18 as well as their only Stanley Cup Final appearance the year before.  Poile wasted little time finding a replacement as the next day, John Hynes was hired as their new head coach.  The team picked up their first win under Hines on Thursday and it was quite the memorable one with Pekka Rinne becoming the first goalie to score a goal since Mike Smith did so back in 2013.

Big Contract For Andersson: Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson is in his second full NHL season but has emerged as a capable top-four defender on Calgary’s back end.  With fellow blueliners Travis Hamonic and T.J. Brodie both slated to become unrestricted free agents in July, GM Brad Treliving opted to ensure Andersson (who was going to be a restricted free agent) would be sticking around for the long haul, signing him to a six-year, $27.3MM extension.  The deal buys out two years of UFA eligibility and if his offensive game progresses, it could become quite the bargain fairly quickly.  The Flames now have four defensemen under contract for next season (including the injured Juuso Valimaki) so GM Brad Treliving still has some work to do at that position.

Shesterkin Debuts: For years, Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin has been viewed as one of the top goaltenders outside the NHL if not the best.  That is no longer the case as the team brought him up from AHL Hartford and had him make his NHL debut.  There aren’t any injuries between the pipes in New York so for the time being at least the Rangers will be going with three goaltenders as Shesterkin joins Henrik Lundqvist and Alexandar Georgiev.  Carrying three goalies is rarely a tenable situation but Shesterkin is the only waiver-exempt option of the three but his deal contains a European Assignment Clause.  Not surprisingly, the Rangers appear to be open to listening to offers for Georgiev, a pending restricted free agent.

Williams Returns: When Justin Williams announced that he was taking a break from hockey at the beginning of training camp, speculation immediately began that he would eventually find his way back to Carolina.  That is indeed what happened as he signed a one-year deal to rejoin the Hurricanes.  The deal is worth the pro-rated league minimum but contains performance bonuses for games played as well as Carolina’s postseason success.  That allows the team to preserve most of their remaining cap room although if they utilize that, they will run the risk of a bonus overage that would roll over into 2020-21.

Atlantic Notes: Zaitsev, Bobrovsky, Grzelcyk, Joseph

January 12, 2020 at 7:34 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

It has been a strange last few weeks for Senators defenseman Nikita Zaitsev.  Originally expected to return shortly after the holiday break from his deep bone bruise, that plan has been pushed back a few times.  However, it appears that the wait may be coming to an end.  Head coach D.J. Smith told Postmedia’s Ken Warren that the hope is that the blueliner will be able to return to practice at some point this week and that they haven’t ruled out him returning before their bye week.  Zaitsev has been out since December 16th with the issue but still ranks second on the team in blocked shots with 74 in just 32 games while ranking second in ice time per game behind only Thomas Chabot.

More from the Atlantic:

  • Panthers goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky isn’t playing tonight against Toronto but it doesn’t sound as if he will be out for too long. Head coach Joel Quenneville told reporters, including TSN’s Mark Masters (Twitter link), that the netminder should be available for their next game on Thursday against Los Angeles.
  • Bruins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk left Saturday’s game early after taking a slash but it doesn’t appear as if he’ll be out for long. Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald mentions that the blueliner skated on Sunday after x-rays came back negative and that he could be available for their next game on Monday.
  • The demotion of Lightning winger Mathieu Joseph to the minors late last month came as somewhat of a surprise after being a regular with Tampa Bay for most of last season. Joe Smith of The Athletic notes (subscription required) that the team has no internal timeline for when they plan to bring him back but the fact that Alex Volkov was recalled to serve as injury insurance suggests that it’s going to be a longer-term stay that they don’t want to interrupt with some short-term recalls.  The 22-year-old has been relatively productive so far with AHL Syracuse with six points through his first seven games.

Snapshots: Kuemper, Fitzgerald, Pateryn

January 12, 2020 at 5:55 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

It looks like the Arizona Coyotes will be without starting goaltender Darcy Kuemper for a while longer. Despite traveling with the team, giving Coyotes fans some hope that he was close to returning, Richard Morin of the Arizona Republic revealed that Kuemper has been ruled out until before the All-Star break.

While Kuemper had an impressive season last year, challenging for the starters’ role then, the 29-year-old netminder has been even better this year, posting a 2.17 GAA and a .929 save percentage in 25 games. However, he suffered a lower-body injury on Dec. 19 and now, at best, isn’t likely to return until Jan. 29. Unfortunately, Antti Raanta has also been out, leaving the team with Adin Hill as its starting goaltender for the time being.

  • While the New Jersey Devils intend to undergo a thorough search for a new general manager sometime in the near future, NHL.com’s Tom Gulitti wonders whether the team already has that man in new interim general manager Tom Fitzgerald. The scribe believes that Fitzgerald is considered to be a future GM and if he can have a quality trade deadline, he could be the top candidate to take the job permanently.
  • Minnesota Wild defenseman Greg Pateryn made his season debut today after missing the first 44 games of the season after having bilateral core muscle surgery, according to Star Tribune’s Sarah McLellan. Pateryn has struggled in his rehab, however, as he was sent to Iowa on a conditioning stint on Dec. 2, but was later activated and placed back on injured reserve. Pateryn should provide the Wild with some defensive depth. While he doesn’t offer much in offensive ability (one goal, six assists in 80 games last year), he did provide much needed defense, including 144 hits and 118 blocks.
