Snapshots: Gardiner, Clutterbuck, Enroth

December 20, 2019 at 11:46 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

It was a long summer for defenseman Jake Gardiner after a long career with the Toronto Maple Leafs ended with heartbreak at the hands of the Boston Bruins once again. Gardiner became an unrestricted free agent and ended up waiting until September to sign a four-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes. In a long interview with The Athletic’s James Mirtle (subscription required), Gardiner explains exactly why he chose to leave a hockey hotbed for quieter Carolina, even confirming that he turned down a bigger offer from the Montreal Canadiens.

After the piece was published, Mirtle’s colleague Pierre LeBrun tweeted that there are teams around the league wondering if they can pluck Gardiner out of Carolina given his relatively low usage behind stars like Jaccob Slavin and Dougie Hamilton. Gardiner is currently averaging just over 16 minutes a night for the Hurricanes. The 29-year old comes with a $4.05MM cap hit and holds a seven-team no-trade list.

  • The New York Islanders will not issue an update on Cal Clutterbuck’s status until tomorrow, other than he was allowed to fly home with them following their game against the Boston Bruins. Clutterbuck had his wrist sliced by the skate of Patrice Bergeron, immediately dropping his glove and leaving the game. Injuries caused by a skate blade are always hard to watch, especially after the recent incident involving junior goaltender Tucker Tynan. As always, Clutterbuck has been a solid contributor for the Islanders this season, leading the team in hits and all forwards in blocked shots.
  • Former NHL goaltender Jhonas Enroth could return to the SHL after having his KHL contract with Dinamo Minsk terminated. The 31-year old actually posted a .909 save percentage during his 153-game NHL career, but struggled in his most recent stint with the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2016-17. The undersized netminder was originally a second-round pick of the Buffalo Sabres in 2006 and has regularly suited up for Sweden in international competitions.

Ryan Murray Placed On Injured Reserve

December 20, 2019 at 10:33 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

In what has become a familiar refrain, the Columbus Blue Jackets have placed Ryan Murray on injured reserve. The defenseman suffered a back injury last weekend against the Ottawa Senators and is listed as week-t0-week. Columbus has also sent Marko Dano down the minor leagues.

Murray’s name has been in the trade mill for years now, but it’s hard for any team to know if he’s even still an effective option. There haven’t been many stretches of healthy play long enough to really evaluate the 26-year old, as he spends just as much time in the trainer’s room as on the ice. Since debuting in 2013, Murray’s game totals by year have gone: 66, 12, 82, 60, 44, 56 and he’s played just 24 of the Blue Jackets’ first 35 games this season. While it is obvious he has skill to compete in the NHL, there’s just no guarantee that he’ll even be available at this point.

The injuries for Columbus are piling up but the team has actually won their last three and are trying to save a season that was quickly getting out of hand. The team now sits at 15-14-6 after their recent hot streak but are still seventh in the Metropolitan Division. If they at any point decide to move some of their assets Murray’s name will come up again, but he’ll have to be healthy enough to play in order to attract any buyers before the deadline.

Minor Transactions: 12/20/19

December 20, 2019 at 9:29 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

It’s always a date to circle on the NHL calendar when the Pittsburgh Penguins and Edmonton Oilers meet, as battles between Sidney Crosby and Connor McDavid never fail to impress. Unfortunately tonight one side will be without their superstar as Crosby continues to recover from injury, meaning Evgeni Malkin and company will have to try and hold off McDavid on their own. That is just one of the four matchups this evening, and as teams prepare we’ll keep track of all the minor moves.

  • It’s not just Crosby who is hurting for the Penguins, meaning they needed even more bodies from the minor leagues today. The team has recalled Thomas Di Pauli and Kevin Czuczman from the AHL in time for tonight’s game.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes have sent Brian Gibbons back to the minor leagues. Gibbons has been the team’s insurance forward all season, bouncing up and down whenever they need another body. The 31-year old has played in 15 NHL games, but hasn’t scored a single point.
  • David Kase has been sent back to the minor leagues after just a single day in the NHL. This is already Kase’s fourth transaction this month, serving as an insurance policy for the Philadelphia Flyers on game days.
  • The Buffalo Sabres have recalled Curtis Lazar after Jack Eichel was made a late scratch last night. The captain was out with an upper-body injury, technically ending his 17-game point streak.
  • Yakov Trenin has been sent back to the minor leagues by the Nashville Predators, who will conclude their road trip with a date against the Boston Bruins tomorrow. Trenin, 22, has played in six games with the team this season but has been a force in the AHL.
  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled both Jakob Lilja and Ryan MacInnis from the minor leagues. MacInnis, 23, has actually still not made his NHL debut despite being a second-round pick from 2014 and playing regularly in the minor leagues.
  • Zack MacEwen has been recalled by the Vancouver Canucks, after Josh Leivo was injured in last night’s game against the Vegas Golden Knights. MacEwan has become a favorite call-up of the Canucks after signing as an undrafted free agent, with eight games already played in the NHL this season.

What Your Team Is Thankful For: Florida Panthers

December 19, 2019 at 8:58 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

As the holiday season approaches, PHR will take a look at what teams are thankful for as the season heads past the one-quarter mark. There also might be a few things your team would like down the road. We’ll examine what’s gone well in the early going and what could improve as the season rolls on for the Florida Panthers.

What are the Panthers most thankful for?

Firepower and plenty of it.  Very quietly, Florida sits fourth in the league in goals scored heading into Thursday’s action and already have five forwards in double digits for goals.  Brett Connolly, an offseason free agent signing, leads the way somewhat surprisingly.  There are teams that are built to have one dominant line and then hope that the other trios can break even.  The Panthers are not one of those squads and have multiple lines that are capable of producing on a regular basis.  Assuming other elements to their game come around (more on that shortly), this offense should easily be strong enough to get Florida back to the postseason.

Who are the Panthers most thankful for?

Aleksander Barkov.  In recent years, he has blossomed into an offensive star and it hasn’t come at the expense of his defensive game either.  At a time where not a lot of forwards log over 20 minutes a night, he’s over that mark for the third straight season.  Barkov isn’t always mentioned among the elite centers in the NHL but his presence in that discussion is certainly warranted.

Another element that Florida is certainly thankful for when it comes to Barkov is his price tag.  With a $5.9MM AAV, he’s making money that’s more at the level of a second line forward; they’re getting a lot of bang for their buck for this one.  Considering he’s signed through 2021-22, they’re going to enjoy his below-market deal for a while yet as well.

What would the Panthers be even more thankful for?

When the Panthers handed Sergei Bobrovsky the second-richest contract ever given to a goalie this summer, the expectation was that they’d now get top goaltending which would give them a big boost.  If he wasn’t at the top of his game, he’d at least be better than what they got last year out of Roberto Luongo and James Reimer.  Bobrovsky’s .903 SV% is well below expectations and only a few points ahead of last year’s tandem.  As a result, they’re in the bottom ten in goals allowed which is why they’re still hanging around the bubble in the Atlantic Division.  If he can get up to even an average level, they’ll be in good shape.  If he can get back to his top form, look out.

What should be on the Panthers’ Holiday Wish List?

Beyond Bobrovsky getting back to form, not much.  It’s not that there aren’t areas where they could still improve but rather the fact that with barely $500K in cap space at the moment per CapFriendly, there isn’t a whole lot they can do right now.  Finding a new home for Mark Pysyk (a pending UFA with a $2.73MM cap hit) would give them a bit of flexibility but that’s a high price tag for a depth defender.  Improving the bottom of their back end would certainly be beneficial for a postseason push.

Their backup goalie situation is likely a bit of concern for GM Dale Tallon.  Samuel Montembeault struggled at the start of the season and as a result, Chris Driedger, a veteran of three NHL appearances heading into this season, is currently the backup.  Finding someone with a bit more of a track record that can spell Bobrovsky a bit more often would be ideal but they’ll need to free up some extra cap space to do that.

Sabres And Hurricanes Have Multiple Defensemen Available

December 19, 2019 at 7:42 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 2 Comments

Teams that are looking to add defensive depth should be focusing on a pair of Eastern Conference squads.  TSN’s Bob McKenzie reports in the latest edition of Insider Trading (video link) that on top of veterans Zach Bogosian and Marco Scandella who were known to be available, the Sabres are also willing to part with Colin Miller.  Meanwhile, the Hurricanes aren’t just open to moving Trevor van Riemsdyk as recent acquisitions Jake Gardiner and Joel Edmundson are also believed to be trade options for them.

Bogosian ($5.143MM) and Scandella ($4MM) are on expiring contracts and have had limited roles when healthy over the last couple of years.  In Bogosian’s case, he recently asked to be dealt following the first of his healthy scratches earlier this month.  But Miller has another two years left after this one at a reasonable $3.875MM AAV.  While he hasn’t performed to expectations with Buffalo, the 27-year-old put up 70 points in his two seasons with Vegas and averaged over 19 minutes a night in both years.  That was enough for the Sabres to part with second and fifth-round picks for Miller back in June although they may not be able to recoup that now considering he has spent time as a healthy scratch recently.

As for Carolina, Gardiner just signed with them back in September, inking a slightly-backloaded four-year, $16.2MM deal to match his $4.05MM AAV from his previous contract.  He has struggled considerably with his new team though, recording just eight points along with an ugly -17 plus/minus rating; only four blueliners in the league have a lower rating.  With those struggles, his contract, and a seven-team no-trade clause, the market for him may be somewhat limited.

Edmundson ($3.1MM) and van Riemsdyk ($2.3MM) are both pending unrestricted free agents.  Edmundson was part of the Justin Faulk trade at the beginning of the season and has been a steady presence on their third pairing.  However, the team would like to give Haydn Fleury some more playing time so clearing out one of their left-shot defenders would help create that opportunity.  As for van Riemsdyk, he has been available for a while now but his value has taken a bit of a dip as he’s averaging less than 14 minutes a night, well below his career average which is up over the 17-minute mark.

McKenzie notes that both teams are looking for scoring help but at this stage, they may have to settle for future assets in return and then try to turn those around into the forward that they covet.  While we’re only hours away from the Holiday Roster Freeze coming into effect, these players will be ones to keep an eye on heading into 2020.

Injury Notes: Seabrook, Kuhnhackl, Schultz, Eichel

December 19, 2019 at 6:26 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

On Wednesday, it was reported that Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook’s absence from the lineup was due to him being a healthy scratch.  It turns out that this may not have been the case.  The team announced (Twitter link) that the blueliner wasn’t on the road trip for their game tonight in Winnipeg and is “undergoing further medical evaluation”.  To say this season has been a trying one for the 34-year-old would be a big understatement.  He has just four points in 32 games while logging a career-low 18:09 per night.  Considering his diminished role, it makes sense for Chicago to shut him down if Seabrook is indeed playing through some sort of issue but the way things have been trending for him, there may not be a lineup spot to return to when he’s cleared.

More injury news from around the league:

  • The Islanders announced (via Twitter) that winger Tom Kuhnhackl has been activated off LTIR. He has been limited to just six NHL games this season due to a lower-body injury that he suffered in late-October although he did get into four games on a conditioning stint before returning to the IR earlier this week.  As New York was carrying only 22 players, there is no corresponding move required to bring him back onto the active roster.
  • Pittsburgh has dealt with significant injury issues this season and their list has grown. Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters, including Mike DeFabo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, that defenseman Justin Schultz is out week-to-week with a lower-body injury that he suffered back on Tuesday in his first shift against Calgary.  It’s the second time in the last month that Schultz has had a lower-body issue but it appears this one may keep him out longer than a week and a half like the first one did.
  • Just prior to puck drop tonight, the Sabres announced (Twitter link) that star center Jack Eichel was being scratched due to an upper-body injury; TSN’s Darren Dreger adds (via Twitter) that it’s likely the flu. Eichel is in the midst of a 17-game point streak but that has now come to an end.

Jared Spurgeon Activated From Injured Reserve

December 19, 2019 at 3:24 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Minnesota Wild have one of their key defenders back as Jared Spurgeon has been activated from injured reserve. Spurgeon hasn’t played since December 3rd when he suffered a broken hand blocking a shot against the Florida Panthers.

The Wild were on a ten-game point streak and were one of the hottest teams in the NHL when Spurgeon went down, but have now lost four of their last six and find themselves three points out of a playoff spot in the Western Conference. The return of the 30-year old defenseman should help turn things around, though obviously it may take him some time to get back up to speed.

To make room, the team sent Brennan Menell back to the Iowa Wild after playing in five NHL games. Menell, 22, averaged just under 14 minutes in those games but actually showed that he might be an option down the road for Minnesota.

Spurgeon is listed as a game-time decision for tonight’s game against Taylor Hall and the Arizona Coyotes.

Snapshots: Scott, Belzile, Girard

December 19, 2019 at 12:52 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Toronto Maple Leafs announced that goaltending prospect Ian Scott will be out for six months following hip surgery, an unfortunate outcome in what was supposed to be his first professional season. The reigning CHL Goaltender of the Year, Scott hasn’t played a single game for the Toronto Marlies or Newfoundland Growlers this season.

Toronto has been desperately trying to find an answer for their backup goaltending position this season, but there is still a huge gap between Scott, fellow prospect Joseph Woll and starter Frederik Andersen. Michael Hutchinson and Kasimir Kaskisuo have been used, but neither one has secured a single win this season. Scott is expected to be ready for training camp, but missing an entire season of development isn’t ideal.

  • The Montreal Canadiens have their own injured minor leaguer, as today it was announced that Alex Belzile will miss six months following pectoral surgery. Belzile has played in 20 games for the Laval Rocket this season and has 14 points, but will be shut down at this point. Charles Hudon is also dealing with a lower-body injury and will not travel with the Rocket.
  • Samuel Girard has escaped suspension after sending Alex DeBrincat flying last night, instead earning just a fine from the Department of Player Safety. Girard will pay $1,957.89, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for boarding DeBrincat.

Andrew Peeke Out Four To Six Weeks

December 19, 2019 at 12:03 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Columbus Blue Jackets won’t be using Andrew Peeke in the lineup for the next while, after the young defenseman suffered a broken finger on Tuesday night. Peeke has been moved to injured reserve and is expected to miss four to six weeks. In his place, the team has recalled Gabriel Carlsson from the AHL under emergency conditions.

Peeke, 21, is just the latest injury for the Blue Jackets, whose roster page is starting to look like an infirmary as the season goes on. Josh Anderson, Markus Hannikainen, Brandon Dubinsky, Emil Bemstrom and Ryan Murray are all already out of the lineup, stretching the team’s depth incredibly thin.

Even the young defenseman Peeke wasn’t expected to play big minutes in the NHL this season, his first after leaving Notre Dame. The 34th overall selection in 2016 has just 28 professional games under his belt but projects to be a regular for the Blue Jackets down the line.
