Stefan Matteau Signs AHL Contract

August 22, 2019 at 12:45 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

After failing to see any time in the NHL last season, Stefan Matteau has settled for an AHL deal this time around. The 25-year old forward has signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Monsters. Matteau qualified for Group VI unrestricted free agency after playing last season with the Chicago Wolves.

Originally a first-round pick of the New Jersey Devils, Matteau actually jumped directly into the NHL as a teenager. Playing 17 games with the Devils before heading to junior during the 2012-13 season, the big forward seemed to be on track to quickly become a key part of their forward group. Even the next year playing with the Albany Devils things still seemed on the right track, as Matteau scored 26 points in 67 games as one of the youngest players in the AHL. Unfortunately he was unable to ever really take that next step, and found himself shipped to the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for Devante Smith-Pelly in 2016.

From there, the young forward has found himself in the minor leagues for entire seasons save for eight games with the Vegas Golden Knights in 2017-18. While he is still a decent AHL player he never became the dominant power forward that some believed he could be. Now with just 64 NHL games under his belt and an AHL contract in his pocket, he’ll have to really take another step forward if he’s ever to make it back to the best league in the world.

Calgary Flames Sign Andrew MacDonald To PTO

August 22, 2019 at 12:24 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Professional tryout season is here and the Calgary Flames are willing to give it a shot. The team announced today that veteran defenseman Andrew MacDonald will attend their training camp on a PTO, giving them a potential depth option to sign closer to the season. Calgary of course recently lost Juuso Valimaki to a major knee injury, forcing them to look externally for another defensive option. A professional tryout does not guarantee MacDonald a contract, or keep him from signing a deal with another NHL team.

MacDonald, 32, was once a reliable defenseman for the New York Islanders, so good that he earned himself a six-year, $30MM deal in 2014 from the Philadelphia Flyers. Unfortunately things quickly went downhill in Phialdelphia, to the point of a buyout of the last year of the deal in June. MacDonald will earn nearly $2MM in each of the next two seasons meaning he might be willing to take a minimum salary if the Flames decide he’s good enough to add some depth to the roster.

Whether he is still effective enough is still not decided however. In 47 games with the Flyers last season MacDonald recorded just nine points and posted poor possession numbers once again. He was used sparingly even when he did get into the lineup, not something that inspires confidence that he’ll be able to help the Flames this season. Of course, Calgary might not be looking for someone to play every day. The team still has a solid six names penciled into the starting roster even with Valimaki out, though T.J. Brodie’s name has been in trade speculation for some time. The team still needs to sign Matthew Tkachuk and Andrew Mangiapane and could need some extra cap space if looking at a long-term deal for the former.

Minor Transactions: 08/22/19

August 22, 2019 at 10:26 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

As the RFA market shows signs of movement, other teams are still working to fill out their organizational depth charts. As we keep track of all the minor moves around the world of hockey, we’ll fill you in right here. Keep checking back as this page will be updated throughout the day:

  • The Binghamton Devils have signed Eamon McAdam to a one-year, AHL contract. The 24-year old goaltender was in the Toronto Maple Leafs system last season but failed to receive a qualifying offer, making him an unrestricted free agent. McAdam split time between the Toronto Marlies and Newfoundland Growlers, suiting up for 19 games for each team. Selected in the third round six years ago, he has yet to make his NHL debut.
  • The Hartford Wolf Pack have signed Zach Tolkinen to an AHL contract, bringing back the veteran ECHL defenseman after he got his first taste of the AHL last season on a loan. Tolkinen played nine games with Hartford but was held scoreless, serving most of the season as the captain of the Maine Mariners.
  • Veteran winger T.J. Hensick has signed an ECHL contract with Toledo.  The veteran of over 100 NHL games and 600 AHL contests split last season between the Walleye and San Jose of the AHL.  Despite picking up an impressive 20 points in 23 games with the Barracuda, he was unable to secure an AHL deal for the upcoming season.

Dmitrij Jaskin Signs In KHL

August 22, 2019 at 9:40 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 3 Comments

Thursday: Dynamo Moscow has officially announced the contract, bringing Jaskin back to Russia for the 2019-20 season.

Wednesday: The Washington Capitals decided not to issue a qualifying offer to Dmitrij Jaskin at the end of the season, making him an unrestricted free agent and able to sign with any team he chooses. It now looks like that choice won’t be in the NHL, as Igor Eronko of Sport-Express reports that Dynamo Moscow of the KHL have acquired Jaskin’s rights and are expected to sign him to a one-year contract.

Jaskin, 26, ended up playing just 37 games for the Capitals last season and found himself out of the playoff lineup altogether. Head coach Todd Reirden voiced his displeasure with the forward’s play at points, explaining a healthy scratch by pointing to his lack of versatility. It’s that lack of versatility that may have ended Jaskin’s NHL career for now.

Originally selected in the second round of the 2011 draft, it quickly looked as though the St. Louis Blues may have found a steal after Jaskin took the QMJHL by storm in 2012-23. Scoring 46 goals and 99 points in 51 games, he showed off a power forward ceiling that had scouts drooling. Unfortunately that kind of offensive opportunity rarely presented itself as he was trying to break into the NHL, and Jaskin didn’t seem to fit properly in the bottom-six. After several relatively disappointing seasons with the Blues, he was nabbed off waivers in October of 2018.

In Russia, perhaps he’ll get that chance to reclaim his place as a top offensive player beside talent like Vadim Shipachyov. There’s still lots of time to get his career back on track and an NHL return may not be out of the cards at some point.

Veeti Miettinen Commits To St. Cloud State University

August 21, 2019 at 8:23 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

The St. Cloud State University Huskies have been the No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament for two years in a row and aren’t looking to slow down. Today they picked up another impressive commitment in Finnish forward Veeti Miettinen, according to The Rink Live. The 2020 NHL Draft-eligible prospect is expected to join the program ahead of the 2020-21 season.

Miettinen, 17, is considered an early-round candidate for next year’s draft. In their preliminary rankings, Future Considerations placed the talented Finn at No. 40, an early second-round score, but he could very well push for first-round consideration. At 5’9” and 159 lbs., Miettinen is far from a physical force, but hasn’t let his lack of stature stop him from being an offensive force. Last season, he recorded 61 points in 48 games for the Espoo Blues’ U-20 team competing in the junior Liiga. He then tacked on four points in five games at the U-18 World Junior Championships. Miettinen will be back with the Blues and the U-18 Finns again this season, but he could greatly improve his draft stock if he can also earn a look with the Liiga’s Blues and the U-20 Team Finland World Junior entry.

Once at St. Cloud, Miettinen will be joining a program that just graduated stars like Ryan Poehling, Patrick Newell, and Jimmy Schuldt, but are far from empty when it comes to talent. Defenseman Nick Perbix (TBL) and forward Sam Hentges (MIN) are among the top young contributors who will still be around when Miettinen arrives next season, with many still sure to be added to the recruiting class. With that said, St. Cloud fans should be very excited about Miettinen, who has the potential to be the next Ryan Poehling in terms of game-changing talent up front.

Jack LaFontaine Joins The University of Minnesota

August 21, 2019 at 7:35 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

Carolina Hurricanes prospect goalie Jack LaFontaine is back in the NCAA. The 21-year-old keeper has enrolled at the University of Minnesota and will play this season, the program announced. LaFontaine had been away from the college game for one year with the Penticton Vees of the BCHL, having previously spent two seasons with the Big Ten rival University of Michigan.

LaFontaine was a third-round pick of the Hurricanes back in 2016 out of the NAHL. While some considered the pick to be a reach, seeing as Fontaine had not been challenged at an elite level yet and was raw in terms of his skill development, Carolina was clearly happy to select a player with good size and athleticism who they could groom as a long-term project. LaFontaine jumped right into the college ranks after being drafted, but failed to take advantage of no clear starter in net for the Wolverines. In each of his two years, the young netminder posted a GAA over 3.33 in just eleven appearances. Seeking a fresh start, LaFontaine left Michigan and signed with Penticton. He was beyond impressive last season, recording a .923 save percentage and 2.19 GAA in 45 starts and earning the BCHL’s Top Goaltender honors.

Having re-asserted himself as a promising young goalie, LaFontaine is ready to give the NCAA another go. He has two years of eligibility remaining, after which he hopes to have proven himself to be a pro-caliber prospect. Much like when he began with the Wolverines, the Gophers net is wide open; all three goalies who made an appearance last season, including starter and recent Minnesota Wild signing Mat Robson, have departed. LaFontaine is the odds-on replacement, but he will have to hold off 20-year-old Jared Moe, a sixth-round pick of the Winnipeg Jets in 2018. If he can do so and can put up numbers similar to this past season in Penticton, perhaps the Hurricanes will come calling even sooner than two years from now.

Capitals To Start Backstrom, Holtby Negotiations Next Month

August 21, 2019 at 5:56 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Washington Capitals have been busy this offseason trying to find a way to improve their roster on the fringes without much financial flexibility. After signing core players like Evgeny Kuznetsov, T.J. Oshie, Dmitry Orlov, Tom Wilson and John Carlson to long-term contracts over the last few years the team has very little cap space to play with. Still, they found a way to fit a new contract for Jakub Vrana into the mix while adding players like Richard Panik for relatively little cost. Now with their group essentially set for the regular season, attention will have to turn to two other key members of the squad who are on expiring deals.

Nicklas Backstrom and Braden Holtby, arguably the two most important players to the franchise other that Alex Ovechkin over the last decade, are both entering their final years before unrestricted free agency. Speaking with Tom Gulitti of NHL.com, Capitals GM Brian MacLellan explained that the team will be opening discussions with both players in early September before training camp begins. While that doesn’t mean deals will immediately get completed, Gulitti did point out that MacLellan didn’t rule out signing at least one of them before the season begins in October.

Though Backstrom has been somewhat in Ovechkin’s shadow his entire career, there is little doubt that he has been one of the very best players in the game since entering the league in 2007. Over his 895-game career, the 31-year old Swede has 873 points and received votes for the Selke Trophy as one of the league’s best defensive forwards nine different times. What Ovechkin brings every night in a goal scoring role, Backstrom has delivered through his deft playmaking, recording at least 50 assists in nine different seasons. His career-high came in 2009-10 when he put up 101 points including 66 at even-strength.

There is a case to be made that Backstrom will be Hall of Fame worthy when he finally hangs up his skates, something that would be even more meaningful if he plays his entire career with the Capitals. Currently carrying a $6.7MM cap hit however, he would likely need a raise on any extension.

Holtby on the other hand is in a bit of a different situation. The 29-year old goaltender has been outstanding over his nine-year career with the capitals, posting a single season save percentage under .911 just once throughout. A finalist for the Vezina Trophy in back-to-back seasons he took home the award in 2016 when he went 48-9-7 for the Capitals. Holtby already has more than 250 wins in his career and will climb into the top-50 all-time in that category this season. He too would surely welcome the chance to stay in Washington, but given the contract that Sergei Bobrovsky just secured on the open market one has to wonder whether the Capitals will be able to fit him in.

Seven years and $70MM took Bobrovsky—who is almost exactly a year older than Holtby, meaning they would be hitting the open market at the same age—to the Florida Panthers and set the market for the Capitals netminder. With Washington grooming top prospect Ilya Samsonov as a future NHL starter it might not make sense to make that kind of commitment to Holtby. Still, perhaps the veteran goaltender would welcome a short-term deal in order to stay in Washington and continue to compete at the highest level. There’s no telling when Samsonov will be ready to take over (if ever), given his extremely limited sample in North America.

The Capitals do have a fair amount of money to use next season but have to consider that Ovechkin himself is only two years away from unrestricted free agency. When talks start with Holtby and Backstrom the team will get a better idea of where they stand and whether or not they are even in the same ballpark.

Derick Brassard Signs With New York Islanders

August 21, 2019 at 3:50 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 11 Comments

Despite reports last night that Derick Brassard would sign with the Edmonton Oilers, the free agent forward instead has inked a one-year deal with the New York Islanders. Brassard returns to the Eastern Conference after spending the end of last season with the Colorado Avalanche. The contract is worth $1.2MM.

The 31-year old forward will try to get his career back on track after failing to live up to expectations at his last three stops. After becoming a reliable offensive producer for the Columbus Blue Jackets, New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators, Brassard struggled to ever find his way with the Pittsburgh Penguins despite ample opportunity with their talented lineup. He ended up with Florida and then Colorado last season, but was limited to fourth-line duties in the playoffs with the Avalanche and not retained when his contract expired this summer.

Still, he remains a low-risk addition for the Islanders who are continuing to try to build a new culture in New York. The team turned around their style last season under head coach Barry Trotz and became one of the best defensive units in the NHL, an identity that Brassard will have to embrace if he wants to rebuild his value as a top-nine player.

Even with his struggles in 2018-19, Brassard still came in at #25 on our list of the Top 50 UFAs this offseason thanks to a strong history. The Islanders will bet on that history and see if they can squeeze a bargain out of the free agent market this late in the summer.

Minnesota Wild Sign Joel Eriksson Ek

August 21, 2019 at 3:41 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

It’s hard to make a quicker first move than Bill Guerin just did. After officially being hired as the Minnesota Wild GM this afternoon, the team has already signed restricted free agent Joel Eriksson Ek to a two-year contract. The deal will carry an average annual value of $1,487,500 and totals $2.975MM. Jokes aside, assistant GM Tom Kurvers who had been operating as interim GM, had likely worked out this contract with Eriksson Ek. The young forward will still be a restricted free agent when the deal expires, though he will have arbitration rights.

Eriksson Ek, 22, has long had tantalizing potential without much production to show for it. The 20th overall pick in 2015 routinely flashes the ability to be a solid top-nine forward and key contributor for the Wild, but still only has 37 points in 148 career NHL games. During his short stints in the minor leagues—amazingly just 18 games over three years—he has produced at a point-per-game pace and looked like the best player on the ice. But as soon as he is under the bright lights of an NHL rink things haven’t quite clicked.

That’s not to say they can’t. The Swedish forward only turned 22 in January and still has plenty of time to develop into the type of versatile two-way center the Wild have been waiting for. In fact, under new GM Bill Guerin he may get an even larger opportunity to do just that. The team recently committed to Mats Zuccarello in free agency, but there very well may be a turn towards youth and the future if the new GM doesn’t believe they’re ready to contend as currently built. Eriksson Ek and fellow restricted free agent Kevin Fiala (who share the same agent) should be considered building blocks if the team wants to start a mini rebuild, or at least start taking responsibility away from aging veterans like Mikko Koivu, Zach Parise and Eric Staal.

Minor Transactions: 08/21/19

August 21, 2019 at 2:45 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

As the RFA market shows signs of movement, other teams are still working to fill out their organizational depth charts. As we keep track of all the minor moves around the world of hockey, we’ll fill you in right here. Keep checking back as this page will be updated throughout the day:

  • The Stockton Heat have signed four players, inking Terrance Amorosa, Zach Osburn, Matthew Gaudreau and Mitch Hults to one-year, two-way minor league contracts. Gaudreau is the name that will stick out to Calgary Flames fans for obvious reasons, as he is the younger brother of star forward Johnny Gaudreau. The 24-year old has spent the last two seasons with the Worcester Railers of the ECHL while getting a handful of games at the AHL level.
  • Jonathan Martin’s entry-level contract with the San Jose Sharks expired earlier this summer and the team opted not to extend him a qualifying offer. Despite scoring 28 points in 57 AHL games last season, it seems other NHL teams weren’t enamored with the forward either. Martin has signed a one-year deal with the AHL’s Tuscon Roadrunners, the team announced. The 23-year-old will look to work his way back into NHL consideration with a strong perfromance this season.
  • Kelly Cup champion Derian Plouffe has signed with the Indy Fuel of the ECHL, leaving the Toronto Marlies/Newfoundland Growlers after just one full season in professional hockey. Plouffe put up 23 points in 56 games with the Growlers and took home the championship after spending four years at Niagara University. Fellow former Growler Gabriel Gagne has also left the Maple Leafs organization, as the former Ottawa Senators prospect has signed with the ECHL’s Allen Americans, the team announced. The towering power forward recorded 16 points in 55 AHL games last season and is a major addition for Allen.
  • Connor Moynihan won’t be playing for the Rockford IceHogs this season, instead signing an ECHL deal with the Tulsa Oilers. The Oilers decided to bring in both Connor and his brother Danny Moynihan, who actually retired from professional hockey temporarily because of a heart condition. He returns after a year off and last played with the Utica Comets and Kalamazoo Wings in 2017-18.
  • The Boston Globe’s Matt Porter reports that forward Tanner Pond has signed a two-way deal with the AHL’s Bridgeport Sound Tigers. Pond played in a career-high 46 AHL games with the Providence Bruins last year, playing a reliable energy role. He’ll look to carve out a regular role for himself again in the coming season with Bridgeport.
  • Thomas Beretta has transferred to the University of Vermont after three seasons at Michigan Tech. The senior forward is looking for a fresh start after missing more than half of the 2018-19 season due to injury. His scoring pace was the greatest of his collegiate career last season though, so if he can adjust to the tougher competition of the Hockey East Conference, he could be in for a breakout campaign just prior to becoming a free agent next summer.
