Erik Karlsson Trade Talks Have Stalled

July 6, 2018 at 7:00 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 28 Comments

Over the past few days, it seemed like a trade for all-world defenseman Erik Karlsson was imminent. Originally, the Dallas Stars were confirmed to be the leader in the race and deep in talks with the Ottawa Senators on a deal for Karlsson. Not long after, it was the Tampa Bay Lightning who had reportedly pulled ahead and had a deal in place with Ottawa that simply required a third team to take on salary. Some even stated that a deal was done pending a trade call, a rumor that obviously lacked reliability. Karlsson remains a Senator and it now seems like a trade is not coming as quickly as expected.

The Athletic’s Joe Smith, who has had his finger on the pulse of the Lightning’s trade talks, is no longer optimistic about a deal getting done. Smith writes that a deal for Karlsson should not be expected any time soon and that nothing is “imminent or close”. Smith admits that a trade could still work out between Ottawa and Tampa, but it’s no longer the foregone conclusion that some had perceived. Meanwhile the Stars are rumored to have fallen out of favor when they refused to include star blue line prospect Miro Heiskanen in a deal for Karlsson. Sportsnet’s John Shannon believes that the Stars still have a chance to land Karlsson, but it seems that Dallas’ chances depend on whether or not they can be flexible with their offer.

The Senators now have a feel for the market and should be able to work out a fair value for Karlsson soon. However, what isn’t so easy is accommodating their insistence on also sending away Bobby Ryan and his $7.25MM cap hit over four years remaining on his contract. Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reports today that this is the exact reason that finding a trade partner and working out the details of a deal could prove difficult. A three-team deal, like the one contemplated by Ottawa and Tampa Bay, is the most likely outcome for a Karlsson trade, but such deals don’t develop overnight. A trade could still be a ways away – The Athletic’s Chris Stevenson says that the Lightning, Stars, and Vegas Golden Knights all remain in the running – but Stevenson also says that nothing is close as the Senators have “retrenched” and the suitors are playing hardball. It seems that whichever team is able to up the ante on their offer and also be creative in managing several major contracts will be the team to land Karlsson and change the face of their franchise.

San Jose Signs Undrafted Forward Vladislav Kotkov

July 6, 2018 at 5:56 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 1 Comment

The San Jose Sharks have employed the window to sign undrafted first-year draft eligible players by inking a promising forward prospect. The team announced this evening that they signed Vladislav Kotkov to an entry-level contract. Kotkov has been attending development camp with the Sharks this past week and did enough to earn a deal.

Kotkov, 18, was ranked 81st among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting heading into the 2018 NHL Draft and was one of the biggest surprises among undrafted players. Kotkov was a first-round pick in the CHL Import Draft last year and enjoyed success in his first season playing major junior, posting 49 points in 61 games for the Chicoutimi Sagueneens of the QMJHL.

The hulking winger stands 6’4″, 205 lbs. and plays a heavy power forward game that matches his frame. Kotkov also developed a surprising finesse game given his stature while developing in his native Russia. Kotkov’s skating concerns likely drove down his draft stock this year, but he was clearly a priority undrafted free agent for the Sharks and can now return to Chicoutimi for another year or two now with some additional guidance from his NHL squad. Kotkov is out to prove to the rest of the league that he was worthy of a draft pick. That chip on his shoulder and size that you can’t teach could mean that Kotkov could one day see NHL action.

Colorado Re-Signs Matt Nieto

July 6, 2018 at 4:55 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Colorado has agreed to terms on a two-year contract with winger Matt Nieto, per a team release.  Mike Chambers of the Denver Post reports that (Twitter link) the deal will carry a $1.975MM cap hit.

The 25-year-old is coming off of his first full season with the Avalanche after he was claimed on waivers partway through the 2016-17 campaign.  It’s safe to say he has emerged as a quality contributor since then.  Nieto spent a fair bit of time in Colorado’s top six and made the most of it, scoring a career-high 15 goals in 74 games while averaging just shy of 15 minutes per game.  He followed that up with a good showing in the postseason, collecting three assists in six contests.

Nieto was among the players to file for salary arbitration yesterday but clearly, that won’t be needed now.  This contract will carry him to unrestricted free agency in the 2020 off-season. The Avalanche now have four restricted free agents who remain unsigned: defensemen Patrik Nemeth, Ryan Graves, and Mason Geertsen and goaltender Spencer Martin. Of that group, only Nemeth filed for salary arbitration.

Golden Knights Re-Sign Oscar Dansk To Two-Year Deal

July 6, 2018 at 4:38 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Golden Knights have inked another goaltender, announcing the re-signing of Oscar Dansk to a two-year contract.  The deal will carry a cap hit of $675K.

The 24-year-old returned to North America last season after spending two seasons in the SHL, joining Vegas as a minor league netminder.  However, as both Marc-Andre Fleury and Malcolm Subban went down with injuries, Dansk was thrust into the starting role.  He fared quite well in that situation, posting a 1.78 GAA and a .946 SV% before suffering a lower-body injury that cost him nearly half the season.

Upon getting the green light to return late in January, he went back to AHL Chicago where he put up solid numbers as well with a GAA of 2.44 and a save percentage of .918.  However, short of a brief stint as an emergency recall, he didn’t spend any more time with the Golden Knights.

Next season, it’s likely that Dansk will battle for playing time at the AHL level with Maxime Lagace and recently-signed netminder Zach Fucale.  Youngster Dylan Ferguson can also turn pro but Vegas could opt to keep him in junior hockey instead where he’d be guaranteed more playing time.

Pacific Notes: Ducks, Lindholm, Dauphin

July 6, 2018 at 3:47 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Ducks haven’t been overly active so far in free agency and that’s probably not going to change.  In his latest 31 Thoughts podcast (audio link), Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that Anaheim’s focus at this stage of the summer is to lock up a pair of key players to extensions.  Goalie John Gibson and center Adam Henrique are both entering the final years of their respective contracts and the team clearly wants to lock both up long-term.  Gibson will be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights next summer while Henrique will be an unrestricted free agent.

Meanwhile, while the Ducks probably won’t be active in unrestricted free agency the rest of the summer, they still have some work to do with their own players.  Defensemen Brandon Montour and Andy Welinski, as well as wingers Nick Ritchie and Ondrej Kase, are all in need of new contracts.

Elsewhere in the Pacific Division:

  • The Flames are prioritizing signing newly-acquired forward Elias Lindholm to a long-term deal, GM Brad Treliving told Sportsnet 960’s Pat Steinberg (Twitter link). Treliving added that Lindholm’s camp is open to that type of contract as well.  Calgary acquired Lindholm back at the draft after his contract talks with Carolina failed to yield a new deal.  As things stand, he’s a candidate to fill their long-standing vacancy on the right wing of the top line next season.
  • Coyotes center Laurent Dauphin suffered a setback in his rehab from a knee injury that has put his availability for the start of next season in question, reports Craig Morgan of Arizona Sports. Arizona reacquired the 23-year-old back in January as part of the Anthony Duclair trade with Chicago but he spent most of last season in the minors.  However, given that he’s now waiver-eligible, he’d have likely got a long look at a roster spot with the big club in training camp, something that doesn’t appear to be an option now.

Blues Interested In Patrick Maroon

July 6, 2018 at 2:31 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 2 Comments

Even though the Blues have been big spenders this summer, they are making a push to sign UFA winger Patrick Maroon, reports Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic (Twitter link).  However, Maroon’s camp is staying patient and there doesn’t appear to be any particular rush to get a deal done.

The 30-year-old is coming off of a season that saw him record a career-high 43 points between Edmonton and New Jersey.  While he has seen an uptick in his offense as of late, he is still a very physical winger as well which makes him one of the few true power forwards available on the open market.

Maroon underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back in May but it’s not expected to cost him any time next season as he is expected to resume skating in advance of training camp.

As is often the case when notable players remain unsigned after the first few days of free agency, one of the questions that Maroon will have to decide on is whether or not he should continue to pursue a long-term deal.  While the security would certainly be nice, he may have to take less than his asking price to do so.  However, he could look for a one-year pact instead in the hopes that another strong season offensively will only boost his negotiating leverage on the open market next summer.

While the Blues could certainly use Maroon in their middle six group of forwards, given their remaining cap space (roughly $6MM per CapFriendly) and having three regulars still to re-sign including defenseman Joel Edmundson, they would likely have to clear out a contract before they could realistically bring in the St. Louis native.  Speculatively, that cut would need to come from the back end with blueliners Jay Bouwmeester and Carl Gunnarsson entering the final year of their deals.  However, both players are still recovering from significant injuries (a hip issue for Bouwmeester and knee surgery for Gunnarsson) which could potentially complicate things.

Maroon ranks 12th on our Top 50 free agent list and is the second-highest player still unsigned.  It appears that he may be on the open market for a little while yet.

Jeff Zatkoff Signs In Germany

July 6, 2018 at 1:24 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Blue Jackets UFA goaltender Jeff Zatkoff has signed with Straubing in Germany, the DEL team announced (link in German).  He received a one-year contract from the Tigers.

The 31-year-old failed to get into any NHL action last season for the first time since 2012-13.  He started out the season with the Kings but didn’t play at all with their AHL affiliate.  That changed when he was dealt to Columbus back in January where he wound up playing in 17 games with their minor league team in Cleveland while also spending a few days up with the Blue Jackets as the backup as well.  In his career, he has a total of 48 NHL appearances under his belt over four seasons.

With no teams really in need of a number two at the moment (and better options available on the open market), it appears Zatkoff has decided that playing internationally beats playing in a third-string role once again.  If he has a strong showing in Germany, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him take another run at a spot with an NHL team next summer.

Alexander Petrovic Signs One-Year Deal With Florida Panthers

July 6, 2018 at 12:05 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Florida Panthers have re-signed one of their restricted free agents, inking Alexander Petrovic to a one-year $1.95MM contract. GM Dale Tallon had this to say about his defenseman:

Alexander is a dependable young defenseman who adds size and physicality to our lineup. He plays the game with an edge and has grown into a strong shutdown defender. We look forward to Alexander taking the next step in his development with the Panthers and are pleased to have agreed to terms with him.

You could have guessed that Petrovic was close to a deal with the Panthers when he failed to file for arbitration yesterday. The 26-year old defenseman is betting on himself with a one-year deal, as he’ll now be an unrestricted free agent next summer and can’t sign an extension with the Panthers until January 1st, 2019. Whether the Panthers would even want to entertain a multi-year deal isn’t clear, especially after they dramatically cut Petrovic’s minutes this season. Averaging just under 15 per game, the 6’4″ Petrovic was sheltered from many tough defensive matchups and yet still only recorded 13 points on the season. Head coach Bob Boughner instead gave a huge number of the defensive starts to Mike Matheson and Mark Pysyk, while handing Petrovic the lightest zone-start load among any of his defenders.

That middling success for Petrovic always sparks debate and frustration for Panthers fans, given that they chose to protect him in the expansion draft while handing Jon Marchessault and Reilly Smith over to the Vegas Golden Knights. That’s not Petrovic’s fault in any way, but it still will hang over his head while playing in Florida. This could be his last chance to impress the team and bring about a multi-year offer, and he’ll have to perform better than in 2017-18 to do it.

Jason Dickinson Re-Signs With Dallas Stars

July 6, 2018 at 11:08 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The Dallas Stars have come to an agreement with one of their restricted free agents, announcing a one-year $875K contract with forward Jason Dickinson. Dickinson was not eligible for salary arbitration, but didn’t need a very long negotiation anyway to come to some common ground with the Stars.

The 23-year old Dickinson is a tough case for Stars fans to watch. After being selected in the first round five years ago, the big center hasn’t been able to make almost any impact at the NHL level. In 38 career games, 27 of which came this season, he has just five points. Sure, Dickinson has been a good—but not outstanding—scorer at the AHL level, but at some point he’ll be expected to take the next step. That certainly hasn’t happened yet, though there were flashes of brilliance in his play at times last season.

Now coming off his entry-level contract, Dickinson has earned a one-way deal and should get a good shot at locking down a full-time NHL role in training camp. He’s now waiver eligible, meaning the Stars can’t just send him down and hope he keeps developing in Texas. There’s no guarantee someone would pick him up, but he’s exactly the type of low-risk high-reward player a rebuilding club would be targeting near the end of camp. The question will be where he fits into the Dallas lineup, and whether he can produce enough of anything—defense or offense—to stick this time around.

Dickinson will still be a restricted free agent when the deal expires, though his qualifying offer will only increase once again.

Toronto Maple Leafs Sign Tyler Ennis

July 6, 2018 at 11:05 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 13 Comments

Tyler Ennis was recently bought out by the Minnesota Wild, but has now found another home. The Toronto Maple Leafs announced a one-year $650K contract for the diminutive veteran, bringing him in to add some depth to the bottom-half of their lineup.

Ennis, 28, was once an extremely effective player for the Buffalo Sabres, scoring at least 20 goals on three different occasions. The 5’9″ forward doesn’t have a fearful bone in his body, and played bigger than he was by digging hard in the corners and driving hard towards the net. Unfortunately, those kind of plays caught up with his small frame and he has struggled through concussion and groin injuries the last few seasons, while being included as a salary dump by one team and bought out a year later by another. He’ll earn more than $2.4MM over the next two seasons from Minnesota thanks to that buyout, making this new deal seem extremely reasonable for the Maple Leafs.

It is reasonable for Toronto, given that they are rarely worried about actual salary commitments and instead are always dealing with the cap ceiling. For a team that still has plenty of room this summer to make another big splash—even after handing $11MM to John Tavares—Ennis represents a cheap addition that could provide big results. Even last season playing limited minutes in Minnesota Ennis scored 22 points and was a fairly useful player, but the Wild couldn’t afford to keep his $4.6MM cap hit on the books as they look to figure out a way to push past the first round.

For the Maple Leafs, he’ll join players like Josh Jooris, Par Lindholm, Josh Leivo and even maybe Connor Brown in a fourth-line group that could be rotated around for much of the season. Ennis could even provide an option on the powerplay, though Toronto has plenty of talented options to use in that situation. The fact that he’s not a penalty killer will likely hurt his ice time considerably, given that the fourth line won’t be playing a ton for the Maple Leafs this season.
