Ryan Strome Signs Two-Year Contract With Edmonton Oilers

Ryan Strome didn’t file for arbitration yesterday, leading many to believe he was close to a deal with the Edmonton Oilers. In fact, he has signed a two-year deal with the team that will take him through the 2019-20 season. The contract will carry a $3.1MM average annual value according to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet.

Strome, 24, was acquired by the Oilers last offseason in a deal that saw Jordan Eberle head to the New York Islanders. Expected to be a cheaper contributor to the Oilers playoff dreams, Strome struggled once again to find his offensive touch and didn’t seem to have a regular role to fill on the Edmonton roster. Was he a winger who could help them fill out the top-six alongside Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl, or was he a bottom-six center that could be relied upon defensively? Neither were really true early, and the Oilers floundered near the bottom of the league all season.

In the late part of the season though there started to be some clarity on how things would shake out for the Oilers going forward. Strome was moved back to center where he could focus on his two-way game, while Ryan Nugent-Hopkins was put on the top line with McDavid and found immediate success. Though Nugent-Hopkins is also a natural center, it looks like he’ll be riding shotgun for another year. That leaves Strome battling with newcomer Kyle Brodziak for minutes down the middle, and trying to find some chemistry with players like Tobias Rieder, Milan Lucic and Zack Kassian, depending on how the lines are formed.

Strome had 34 points when it was all said and done last season, which was actually the second best NHL season of his career. Originally selected fifth-overall by the Islanders, there are still high hopes that he can provide some big secondary scoring numbers for the Oilers in the coming years. At $3.1MM he’s not a liability producing how he has the last two seasons, but he’s also not much of a value for Edmonton. These are the make-or-break seasons for Strome, who will be a restricted free agent for the final time in the summer of 2020.

Beau Bennett Signs In KHL

The deadline came and went yesterday without Beau Bennett’s name on the list of players filing for player-elected salary arbitration, and now we know why. Igor Eronko of Sport-Express reports that Bennett has signed a one-year contract with Dinamo Minsk in the KHL, meaning there was no need for arbitration with the St. Louis Blues.

Bennett, 26, has never been able to fulfill his first-round draft pick status and spent almost all of last season in the minor leagues. With 64 points in 200 NHL games, Bennett’s offensive ability—quite apparent at every other level of hockey—hasn’t ever shown itself. He’ll try another league, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him find great success overseas. The KHL often rewards players exactly like Bennett, who are obviously talented but have failed to really take advantage of the opportunities given to them in the NHL.

You can bet he’ll be back on the North American radar after a year in Russia, especially if he finds success playing for Minsk. There are 31 AHL teams who would likely welcome Bennett into the fold, but it’s obvious that he wants to play at the highest level possible. He’ll join Sergei and Andrei Kostitsyn on the KHL club, along with Jhonas Enroth and other former NHL players.

Alex Burrows Announces Retirement

The Ottawa Senators bought out the final year of Alex Burrows’ contract recently, and it will unsurprisingly mark the end of his long professional career. Burrows has announced his retirement from playing hockey at the age of 37, ending a 13-year NHL career. Quickly though, the Laval Rocket—the AHL affiliate of the Montreal Canadiens—named Burrows an assistant coach for the upcoming season.

Burrows has had quite the playing career. Undrafted because no one even knew who he was, he didn’t even play in the QMJHL until 19. Fighting his way onto a roster and developing into one of the best players for a Shawinigan team that included Jason Pominville and Zbynek Michalek, he earned himself a chance in the ECHL. It didn’t take long for him to climb the ranks in the minor leagues and eventually break in with the Vancouver Canucks. Just a few seasons into his NHL career he was playing on the top line, and scoring 117 goals over a four-season span between 2008-12. That 35-goal campaign in 2009-10 would never be replicated, but Vancouver fans will never forget his accomplishments in the regular season and contributions in the playoffs.

It wasn’t all success for Burrows though, who was well known for his over-the-line play at times. He racked up 1,134 penalty minutes in his NHL career, and even faced a ten game suspension in the most recent season. He was also involved with an infamous “biting” incident with Patrice Bergeron during the Stanley Cup Finals, though was never suspended for it.

In all, there’s a lot to like for the Canadiens in adding Burrows to their coaching staff. There are few players that had to fight as hard as he did to carve out an NHL career, and those who have were rarely met with his level of success. Who better to teach the young prospects and minor league players what is required to make it at the highest level, though perhaps some of the antics will be left out of those discussions. For Burrows, it is the end of a 913-game NHL career; one that has been among the most interesting and entertaining—one way or another—of his generation.

St. Louis Blues Sign Oskar Sundqvist, Jordan Binnington

The St. Louis Blues have avoided arbitration with one of their restricted free agents, signing Oskar Sundqvist to a one-year contract worth $700K. Sundqvist had filed for arbitration yesterday, but won’t need to have a hearing now. Sundqvist will be eligible for Group VI unrestricted free agency at the end of the deal should he fail to play in 10 games this season.

Sundqvist, 24, has just nine points in his 70 career NHL games and hasn’t been able to secure a full-time role. It’s unclear where he would fit in best in an NHL lineup, as he’s been a good power forward in the minor leagues but doesn’t possess a ton of high-end skill. Sundqvist was part of the trade that send Pittsburgh Ryan Reaves, but wasn’t as important as the first round pick that came along with him. In fact, he played just 42 games for the Blues last season and wasn’t given much of an opportunity to play an offensive game.

He’ll likely play much of the same role for the Blues, coming in and out of the lineup when necessary in 2018-19. Still, with the added depth up front that the team has added there’s no clear path to playing time for Sundqvist. A deal just slightly over league minimum is a reasonable amount of risk for the Blues, and doesn’t guarantee anything for the young Swedish forward.

The team has also signed goaltender Jordan Binnington to a one-year, two-way contract. Binnington didn’t file for arbitration yesterday after spending another season in the minor leagues, but will be rewarded anyway with a quick deal. The 24-year old had an excellent season for the Providence Bruins, spending the year on loan given the Blues didn’t have a primary AHL affiliate of their own. With a .926 save percentage during the season, he showed once again that he could be a backup NHL option at some point. That won’t come in St. Louis anytime soon though with Chad Johnson’s addition and the continued presence of Jake Allen and Ville Husso, which may lead to him becoming a free agent next summer. Binnington will qualify for Group VI UFA status in 2019 if he fails to play in 30 games this season.

Anthony Duclair Signs With Columbus Blue Jackets

Friday: The team has officially announced the contract, putting Duclair on his fourth NHL team. GM Jarmo Kekalainen released a statement about the young forward:

Anthony is a skilled, young player with world-class speed, who has played in over 200 NHL games as a 22-year-old and was one of the league’s top rookies just two years ago. He is eager for an opportunity to improve as a player and we think he has a chance to be an impactful addition to our hockey club.

Thursday: After failing to receive a qualifying offer from the Chicago Blackhawks last week, Anthony Duclair became an unrestricted free agent and could sign anywhere he chose. That landing spot is apparently the Columbus Blue Jackets, as Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports that the young winger will sign a one-way contract worth a league minimum $650K for 2018-19. Duclair would have cost the Blackhawks nearly twice that much, as his qualifying offer would have had to be $1.2MM.

Duclair, 22, will be on his fourth NHL team when he joins the Blue Jackets organization. Originally drafted by the New York Rangers, he was originally part of the trade that brought Keith Yandle from Arizona in 2015. He proceeded to score 20 goals in his first season with the Coyotes, but hasn’t come close to replicating those numbers in the years since. After a midseason trade brought him to Chicago this year, he registered eight points in 23 games and didn’t have quite the impact the team had hoped. $1.2MM (or more, as Duclair was arbitration eligible) was deemed too high a price for the Blackhawks to pay.

In Columbus, the speedy winger joins a deep forward group that won’t be able to guarantee him a role in the top-nine. Though he has certainly shown the skills to perform at that level in the past, he’ll have to do it again before head coach John Tortorella—who was actually fired from the Rangers job just a month before they selected Duclair in the first place—gives him an increased role. For the Blue Jackets though this is a low-risk, high-reward move that could turn out to have huge benefits should Duclair find his game once again.

At the very least they likely have another trade chip, as there were other teams interested in Duclair when he hit the open market. Because he signed with the Blue Jackets while he is still so young, Duclair will actually be a restricted free agent when the contract expires next summer. This time around the qualifying offer will be just above league minimum, meaning Columbus or any acquiring team would be able to retain him for a reasonable amount.

East Notes: Zadina, Faulk, Murray, Gaborik

While there was some speculation that Detroit’s top pick at the draft, winger Filip Zadina, was eligible to play in the AHL next season, notes Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.  It was originally believed that Zadina was on loan to Halifax of the QMJHL which would have made him eligible to play in the minors.  However, that does not appear to be the case which makes him subject to the usual rules for CHL draftees that restricts him from going to the AHL until he turns 20.  Naturally, the Red Wings are hopeful that this is all for naught and that he makes the team in a full-time role in training camp.  If that doesn’t happen, however, then he’ll be heading back to the Mooseheads.

Elsewhere in the East:

  • In his latest 31 Thoughts podcast (audio link), Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman links the Red Wings as a team that has shown interest in Hurricanes defenseman Justin Faulk. Detroit is certainly in need of some more skill on their back end while Faulk has become an even likelier candidate to be moved following Carolina’s acquisition of Dougie Hamilton back at the draft.
  • Blue Jackets defenseman Ryan Murray was one of the few arbitration-eligible players who opted not to file for salary arbitration. Aaron Portzline of The Athletic reports (Twitter link) that there haven’t been any contract discussions with the 24-year-old.  While his decision not to file leaves him open for an offer sheet, that’s still a very unlikely scenario given how few of those get handed out.
  • Part of the reason the Senators didn’t buy out winger Marian Gaborik during the first window last month is that he has yet to be declared fully recovered from his back injury, reports Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch. However, Ottawa will have another window to do so later this summer thanks to defenceman Cody Ceci and winger Mark Stone filing for arbitration.  The window will open up for 48 hours once both players have signed.

Jan Kovar Receiving NHL Interest, Expected To Sign Soon

While there aren’t many centers of note left in free agency, there is one intriguing international player still available in Jan Kovar.  According to his agent Allan Walsh (via Twitter), the 28-year-old has received several NHL offers and is close to making a decision on where he’ll play next season.

Kovar has spent the past five seasons with Metallurg Magnitogorsk of the KHL where he has shown flashes of offensive dominance.  Two seasons ago, he finished tied for seventh in league scoring with 63 points in 59 games and led the KHL in postseason production with 25 points in 18 contests.  This led to some speculation he could be NHL bound last summer but he still had one year left on his contract so that didn’t happen.

Last season, his output dropped considerably as he posted just 35 points (7-28-35) in 54 games.  However, he played well in the Olympics where he tied for the lead in scoring for the Czech Republic with three goals and two assists in six games en route to a fourth-place finish.

As he is already 28, Kovar will not subject to any entry-level restrictions in his first NHL deal.  Although that takes away the potential of adding performance bonuses in his contract, teams will be able to offer greater than a $925K base salary if they so desire.  A top-six spot right away isn’t likely but there should be teams willing to give Kovar a look on their third line to start next season.

Tampa Bay, Ottawa Seeking Third Team To Facilitate Erik Karlsson Trade

6:03 PM: TSN’s Darren Dreger reports (Twitter link) that the Rangers are a team that could potentially be involved as the cap facilitator.  Meanwhile, Joe Smith of The Athletic adds (via Twitter) that winger Ryan Callahan is in play for this move.  He has a 16-team trade list.

3:28 PM: The rumor mill has been working overtime this morning on a potential Ottawa Senators-Tampa Bay Lightning trade revolving around superstar defenseman Erik Karlsson, and now Travis Yost of TSN tweets that the teams are in the process of trying to find a third party to facilitate the deal, as balancing salaries is a key part of any transaction of this magnitude. Karlsson is expected to only be traded to a team if a contract extension can be worked out, while the Lightning are not expected to be one of the teams willing to eat Bobby Ryan’s contract. That contract could be exactly why the third team needs to be involved, though Tampa Bay themselves would likely need to move out contracts to fit in a Karlsson extension.

Remember that nothing is final at this point, and since the stakes in any potential blockbuster Karlsson trade are so high things can change at any moment. Just two days ago the Dallas Stars were considered the clear front runners, though now everything seems to be pointing towards the Lightning.

Karlsson is reportedly looking for a contract extension similar to the eight-year, $88MM deal that Drew Doughty recently signed, which would put any team in a financial bind. The Lightning, who know their way around superstar contracts, could potentially fit him in since they’ve inked their other top players to reasonable extensions the last few years. Steven Stamkos ($8.5MM AAV), Victor Hedman ($7.875MM) and Ryan McDonagh ($6.75MM) have all signed relatively team-friendly deals instead of going to free agency, and though the team still needs to sign Nikita Kucherov to a mega-deal, they even have some cap space remaining for the upcoming season.

There are obvious candidates for the Lightning to move to clear more room. Ryan Callahan ($5.8MM), Tyler Johnson ($5.0MM), Alex Killorn ($4.45MM) are all expendable long-term contracts given the emergence of several young players, while Anton Stralman ($4.5MM), Braydon Coburn ($3.7MM) and Dan Girardi ($3.0MM) are defensemen on expiring contracts who could be moved out given Karlsson’s impact on the blue line. The superstar defenseman only costs $6.5MM this season, meaning jettisoning just one of the above players would give the team enough cap space to acquire him.

Remember that teams during the offseason can go up to 10%, or $7.95MM, over the salary cap ceiling but must be compliant again by the beginning of the season. Even if Tampa Bay doesn’t find a taker for one of their contracts, they could still potentially acquire Karlsson only to find a way to get under the cap ceiling by the beginning of the year.

Hurricanes Re-Sign Trevor Van Riemsdyk To A Two-Year Contract

Although he filed for salary arbitration earlier today, defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk has inked a two-year, $4.6MM contract with the Hurricanes, the team announced.  The contract pays $2.1MM in 2018-19 and $2.5MM in 2019-20.  GM Don Waddell had the following statement on the signing:

“Trevor was a steady presence on our blue line last season.  He’s shown progression each year of his NHL career, and is a well-liked player in our locker room.”

The 26-year-old is coming off of his first season in Carolina, one that saw him record a career-high 13 assists (along with three goals), a team-high +9 rating, and averaged 17:03 of playing time per night.  He also ranked second on the team in blocked shots with 113.

While it was looking like van Riemsdyk had a chance to move into the top four with the trade of Noah Hanifin back at the draft, the odds of that happening went down considerably with the addition of Calvin de Haan earlier this week.  Instead, it’s likely that he will play behind de Haan and Jaccob Slavin and be asked to anchor their third pairing once again.
