Vancouver Canucks Sign Jalen Chatfield To Three-Year ELC

The Vancouver Canucks have dipped into the 20-year old CHL free agent market, signing Jalen Chatfield from the Windsor Spitfires to a three-year, entry-level contract. The defenseman will stay with the Spitfires through their Memorial Cup run—the team is hosting the tournament this year and will get automatic entry. GM Jim Benning had this to say about his newest prospect:

Jalen is a good two-way defenceman that sees the ice well and makes good decisions in all three zones. He moves the puck well and can join the rush. Jalen is another addition to our young prospect pool and we look forward to his continued development playing in Windsor.

Indeed, Chatfield can contribute at both ends of the rink and he trails just (first-round pick) Mikhail Sergachev and (exceptional status) Sean Day in points among Spitfires defenders. The right-handed defenseman doesn’t have any standout skill, but plays a solid all-around game that will likely transition well to the AHL. He’s most definitely not a lock for the NHL, but does add another name to a prospect cupboard that is suddenly finding itself more full than expected.

After acquiring Nikolay Goldobin and Jonathan Dahlen at the deadline and looking like they’ll get another top-10 pick in this year’s draft, the Canucks rebuild could be off to a very quick start. Filling in the cracks with CHL free agents will help, and don’t count them out of the college sweepstakes either. Just today, Bob McKenzie linked them to Zach Aston-Reese, arguably the top prize among the college ranks this year.

Snapshots: College FA, Fasching, Hamilton

After releasing our (partial) list of prominent NCAA free agents yesterday, Bob McKenzie of TSN has released his own today. While we looked at just the defensemen, McKenzie covers all the top prizes including Zach Aston-Reese and Gavin Bayreuther, both of whom are expected to sign within the next 48 hours. McKenzie lists Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Vancouver, San Jose, Los Angeles and Detroit among the suitors for Aston-Reese, who we learned was being pursued by as many as fifteen teams last week. McKenzie connects Buffalo, Dallas, New Jersey and Colorado to Bayreuther, a offensive defenseman who still lacks consistency in his own end.

McKenzie told us earlier today that Daniel Brickley would be heading back to Minnesota State next season, meaning that Bayreuther and the other top defensemen might be in even more demand. The insider has a ton of great information on the immediate future for several drafted prospects playing in college, like Adam Gaudette (Vancouver) and Luke Kunin (Minnesota). As teams continue to get eliminated from tournament contention, decisions will come quickly on their players. NHL clubs want to get them into their systems as soon as possible to help at the professional level.

  • The Buffalo Sabres have recalled Hudson Fasching from the AHL for the latest chapter in a very tumultuous season thus far. Fasching, a NCAA standout of his own last season, has played just six games with the Sabres this season. Still looking for his first point of the year in the NHL, Fasching has battled a groin injury all season. It has kept him out for months at a time, as he has just 31 combined games under his belt this season. The powerful winger out of the University of Minnesota made his NHL debut last spring after signing, and was expected to contribute more this year to a young Sabres squad. Hopefully now he’ll get into the swing of the NHL, and after another lost season from the Sabres lock down a role next fall.
  • It was a crazy first half of the season for Dougie Hamilton, as trade rumors swirled despite being repeatedly shot down by the Calgary Flames front office. As Eric Francis of Sportsnet writes, with that behind him Hamilton has turned into the elite defenseman the Flames had hoped for when they acquired him from the Bruins. The Flames have won nine straight games, and a big part of that should be placed at the feet of the 6’6″ defender. Still just 23-years old, Hamilton set a new career high this weekend in points and looks like he could challenge one day for a Norris trophy. Calgary has their sights set on the Anaheim and second place in the Pacific Division, as with a win tonight against Pittsburgh they could overtake the Ducks with just 13 games to go.

Daniel Brickley To Return To Minnesota State For Another Year

According to Bob McKenzie of TSN, Daniel Brickley—who we listed just yesterday among our top college free agent targets—will return to Minnesota State for his junior season. The Mavericks were ousted from the WCHA playoffs by Michigan Tech yesterday, meaning Brickley could have signed anywhere in the NHL.

As with many collegiate athletes, a disappointing finish to a strong season often leads to unfinished feelings at the school and the appetite to head back for one more season. Brickley likely would have had at least a dozen suitors around the league but instead will hit the market next year (or the year after). The big defenseman broke out this year with 31 points in 31 games, turning heads around the NHL.

With the size and skill to fit into an NHL defense corps one day, Brickley will likely take on an even bigger role for Minnesota State next season as they look to post a strong season again. It wouldn’t be surprising to see an “A” sewn onto his sweater, especially if current captain C.J. Franklin leaves early to sign with the Jets.

Minor Moves: Varone, Graovac, Shore

The Ottawa Senators have decided they no longer have a use for Phil Varone, after the news that Kyle Turris should return to the lineup. Monday afternoon they announced that Varone has been re-assigned to the AHL. The 26-year old Varone only received just five minutes of ice time in Saturday’s win over the Colorado Avalanche, and is more useful in the AHL where he currently leads the baby-Sens in points. With 42 points in 51, Varone has continued his minor-league dominance this season, part of a longer trend. In his six seasons of professional hockey, he has scored at least 35 points in each of them with a career high of 61 in 2013-14.

Obviously Varone isn’t in the Senators’ current NHL plans, but perhaps he’ll get a chance somewhere else next season. The former fifth-round pick is an unrestricted agent this summer, and will likely be looking for an opportunity at the highest level.

  • According to Michael Russo of the Star Tribune, the Minnesota Wild are set to recall Tyler Graovac from Iowa. The 23-year old forward was waived a month ago but has spent most of the season in the NHL, playing in 49 games for the Wild. The massive Graovac is an effective bottom-six player who can play center or wing when needed. With Martin Hanzal out with the flu, Graovac is likely just up as insurance for the rest of the road trip. If the team wants a shake up, they could insert him into the fourth-line center spot, currently occupied by Jordan Schroeder.
  • After signing this weekend and clearing waivers today, Drew Shore will indeed make his debut for the Vancouver Canucks tonight against the Boston Bruins. The former second-round pick will compete to prove that he deserves another look in the NHL next season. “I want to show the Canucks I can be part of their future,” Shore said today to the media. The Canucks will also get Mikael Grandlund back into the lineup, skating alongside the Sedins.

Chicago Blackhawks Agree To Contract With Anthony Louis

The Chicago Blackhawks have continued to lock up young talent out of the college ranks. Scott Powers of The Athletic is reporting that the team has agreed to a two-year contract with Anthony Louis of Miami University (Ohio). The Redhawks’ season ended on Saturday with a series loss at the hands of the Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs, leaving Louis to make a decision about his future in the NHL.

Drafted in 2013 by the Blackhawks in the sixth round, Louis could have waited until August to become an unrestricted free agent and sign with any team. After a solid if unspectacular season he’ll honor his draft status and begin his professional career with Chicago. The 22-year old winger will likely head to the AHL for the remainder of this year and help the Rockford IceHogs finish up their season. The AHL squad is in last place, and could easily give Louis a taste of the professional ranks without risking anything.

An extremely undersized winger standing just 5’8″ 160-lbs, Louis relies on his speed and balance to beat defenders and create offense for himself. For all the offensive talent he possesses, he’ll be hard pressed to utilize it at the next level against players much bigger than him. Then again, that’s the story he’s faced his whole life and perhaps he’ll be able to follow the footsteps of other undersized players—like Johnny Gaudreau and Mitch Marner—and develop into an offensive threat. It’s a long way off for that though, as he has never shown the creativity or finishing ability of either.

Drew Shore Returns From Europe, Signs With Canucks

Monday: According to CapFriendly, Shore has cleared waivers and is now eligible to play though it’s not yet clear when he would debut.

Sunday: Former-NHLer Drew Shore is a current-NHLer once again. Shore is on entry waivers today and has signed with the Vancouver Canucks for the remainder of the season, per a team announcement. Shore makes his way back from Europe after playing this season with EHC Kloten of the Swiss National League A (NLA).  It is because he played overseas this year while not being on Vancouver’s reserve list that he has to clear waivers before he can join the team.

Rarely does leaving the NHL work out as well for one’s hockey career as it has thus far for Shore. A second-round pick of the Florida Panthers back in 2009 and the brother of the L.A. Kings’ Nick Shore, Kings’ minor-leaguer Quentin Shore, and 2017 draft-eligible Baker Shore, a lot was expected of the eldest of a talented hockey family out of Denver, Colorado. However, Shore struggled to find his footing in the NHL early on, scoring just 20 points in 67 games with the Panthers over the course of his first two pro seasons. In 2014-15, Shore had not played a single NHL game by mid-January, when he was dealt to the Calgary Flames. The trade made matters worse, as Shore was only given 13 games with Flames in a season and a half with the organization and scored only four points in that time. Tired of the minors and his lack of production at the highest level in North America, the 26-year-old center signed with Kloten in Switzerland this summer. In the NLA, Shore seemed to finally find his game, recording 24 goals and 24 assists in 50 games. His 24 goals ranked third in the league, while his 48 total points finished sixth. Shore achieved these numbers on a team that was significantly less talented than most of its competition and featured only one other former NHL forward, James Sheppard. Shore carried the squad and helped them to avoid relegation.

Now that Shore has re-established his game, at least in what many consider the second-best hockey league in Europe, he is going to try his hand at the NHL once more. His signing with Vancouver is yet another shrewd move to add to the recent streak of GM Jim Benning. Shore is still young and spent the last year dominating talented competition and developing the open, offensive European game that the Canucks try to implement. The team is out of playoff contention – though Shore would not have been eligible to compete anyway – but can still take the rest of the season to assess their new asset for his future fit. Gambling on Shore is a low-risk, high-reward investment for Benning as well as something for disheartened Vancouver fans to follow for the remainder of the season. Little downside for the team, fans, or player in this scenario.

Injury Notes: Calvert, Carrick, Senators

The Columbus Blue Jackets have activated Matt Calvert off injured reserve as they get ready to play the Philadelphia Flyers tonight. After getting word that Ryan Murray will be out for four to six weeks, Calvert’s return should be welcome news in Columbus. The 27-year old winger hasn’t played since February 17th, out with a strained oblique muscle. Though he only has 11 points on the season, Calvert is a big part of the Blue Jackets’ bottom-six and penalty kill.

Following Calvert’s return, the Blue Jackets have sent T.J. Tynan back to the AHL. The diminutive forward had played three games for the team but rarely saw the ice. With less than eight minutes a night, Tynan was being wasted at the NHL level and instead will return to continue his excellent minor league season. With 30 points in 55 games, Tynan ranks second on the Cleveland Monsters in scoring and has shown a consistent ability to find his teammates.

Pittsburgh Penguins Recall Josh Archibald From AHL

The Pittsburgh Penguins may have another young winger ready to make an impact for them down the stretch. Today they called up Josh Archibald from the AHL prior to their game against the Calgary Flames tonight. The Penguins are on a five game winning streak and just a point behind the Metropolitan-leading Washington Capitals for first place in the entire NHL.

Archibald is a 24-year old winger who was selected in the sixth round of the 2011 draft. After completing—and dominating in—three seasons at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, Archibald has steadily climbed through the ranks of the Penguins’ minor league system. Earlier this year he played two games for Pittsburgh, scoring two goals in a February 11th overtime loss against Arizona. Amazingly, he has scored on each of the only two shots he’s taken during his three game NHL career.

As Pittsburgh has shown over the years with the emergence of Bryan Rust and Conor Sheary, the team isn’t afraid to put young players into key roles during a playoff stretch. After seasoning them at the AHL level, they can find ways to let them impact the game without exposing their inexperience. While Archibald isn’t guaranteed to play that role for the Penguins this season, his ability to penalty kill and play a solid defensive game may lend itself to some fourth-line minutes down the stretch and into the postseason.

Ryan Murray Out Four To Six Weeks With Broken Hand

Though there was initially no timetable, Columbus Blue Jackets’ fans immediately assumed the worst when hearing that Ryan Murray had broken his hand. Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press confirmed those fears today, reporting that the defenseman would be out for four to six weeks. Murray blocked a shot against the Buffalo Sabres on his second shift of the game Saturday night, coming out of the game immediately.

The Blue Jackets had only dealt with minor injuries to the majority of their defense corps, with Zach Werenski and Jack Johnson having not missed a single game this season. Losing Murray is exactly the type of unfortunate scenario that led to the acquisition of Kyle Quincey at the deadline, who will likely assume much of the responsibility. Quincey’s flexibility to play both sides of the ice will allow the Blue Jackets to insert whoever they wish into the sixth spot, likely one of Scott Harrington or Markus Nutivaara.

Murray, the former second-overall pick of the 2012 draft, had been a workhorse for the Blue Jackets last season, logging over 22 minutes of icetime each night. With a full season from Seth Jones and the emergence of Werenski however, his importance had been dialed back this year. Still an integral piece of their penalty kill, his absence will surely be felt over the last month and a half of the season. Four weeks would bring him back just in time for the playoffs, while six would jeopardize the entire first round. With the Blue Jackets a lock for a playoff spot, but not necessarily home ice advantage, the remaining fifteen games are still extremely important.

East Notes: Weegar, Namestnikov, Islanders

After Aaron Ekblad was taken out of Saturday’s game for the Florida Panthers, it looks like he’ll be out for at least a while with a concussion. In the meantime, the Panthers are expected to recall MacKenzie Weegar, according to George Richards of the Miami Herald. The 23-year old has developed steadily in the minors since being selected in the seventh round (206th overall) of the 2013 draft. With 12 goals and 29 points this season, Weegar has been Springfield’s “best defenseman overall” according to Eric Joyce, the Panthers’ assistant general manager.

Weegar will likely make his NHL debut against the Toronto Maple Leafs on Tuesday night, as the Panthers try to stay relevant in the Eastern Conference playoff picture. Now seven points behind Toronto for the final playoff spot, their current five game losing streak has all but dashed those postseason hopes completely.

  • Vladislav Namestnikov was at Lightning practice this morning in a regular jersey according to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times. One of the three Lightning centermen that were injured last Thursday, it would be huge if he could return so quickly. With Tampa just three points back of the Maple Leafs, this back-to-back against the New York Rangers and Ottawa Senators is crucial to their season hopes. Today, the team called up Byron Froese to give them some depth up the middle, but hopefully Namestnikov can still return either tonight or tomorrow.
  • Both Tyler Johnson and Cedric Paquette missed the skate entirely, with Smith not convinced Paquette even made the trip to New York. That likely explains why Froese was called up, though it doesn’t bode well for the Lightning.
  • Smith also reports that Steven Stamkos again skated before the rest of the team as he continues to work his way back. Wednesday would mark four months since he last appeared in a game, the minimum amount of time he was expected to miss. If the Lightning have any chance of taking and holding a playoff spot, they’ll need their captain back sooner than later.
  • The New York Islanders had some friendly faces back at their morning skate, as Alan Quine and Casey Cizikas both stayed on after their pre-skate workout to practice with the team according to Arthur Staple of Newsday. Though they’re both “close, but not ready”, it is definitely a good sign for a team battling for their playoff lives. Cizikas is a very important piece to their lineup, able to move up and down whenever needed. After returning home from their nine-game road trip, the Islanders have a home-and-home with Carolina tonight and tomorrow. They currently sit just a point back of Toronto, and have as good of a chance as anyone to take home that final wildcard position.
