Blue Jackets Sign Yegor Chinakhov To Two-Year Extension

June 21, 2024 at 11:02 am CDT | by Josh Erickson 2 Comments

The Blue Jackets have signed winger Yegor Chinakhov to a two-year, $4.2MM extension, per a team announcement. The deal carries a $2.1MM cap hit through the 2025-26 season.

Chinakhov, 23, was a pending restricted free agent. The Russian winger was not eligible for salary arbitration and wouldn’t have been until the summer of 2025. Notably, this is Don Waddell’s first signing since taking over as general manager of the Blue Jackets late last month.

A completely off-the-board first-round pick in 2020, Chinakhov solidified himself as a solid depth scoring option this past season with 16 goals and 29 points in 53 games. His shooting percentage was a tad steep at 14.5%, and he may be a regression candidate next year, but he didn’t look out of place as his minutes ramped up. He averaged 15:10 per game, seventh among Blue Jackets forwards who finished the season on the roster. Chinakhov also had some of the best possession metrics of any Columbus player, finishing fifth on the team with a 49.4 CF% at even strength.

There’s been a lot to like around Chinakhov’s all-around offensive game. In hindsight, his 69 points in 56 Russian junior league games during his draft year should have earned him a tad more consideration from the public scouting world at the time. He had solid results in his lone professional season in Russia, posting 10 goals and 17 points in 32 games for Avangard Omsk in 2020-21 before arriving in Columbus the following year. A dual-threat passer and shooter with a good set of wheels, he averaged 2.1 shots on goal per game this season.

His production provided some great financial value for Columbus this year, spending the campaign on a one-year, $800K extension he inked in April 2023 with his entry-level contract set to expire. It’s a considerable but deserved raise for the Omsk native, who will continue to push for consistent top-six minutes next season under a new head coach. The Blue Jackets still have $21.675MM in projected cap space for 2024-25 with a roster size of 16.

Free Agency Notes: Raymond, Perron, Kane, Zamula, Chinakhov

June 4, 2024 at 9:00 am CDT | by Brennan McClain 1 Comment

With plenty of news coverage surrounding free agency this time of year, Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic (Subscription Required) spoke to a trio of players expected to hit free agency in the upcoming weeks for the Detroit Red Wings and where things currently stand with each. LeBrun notes that all three of Lucas Raymond, David Perron, Patrick Kane, and their respective agents are set to meet with General Manager of the Red Wings, Steve Yzerman, at some point this week.

As the only restricted free agent of the players mentioned, Raymond does not have the same bargaining rights as Perron and Kane, as he is still unable to file for arbitration, let alone hit the open market. Having managed a 14-goal and 13-assist jump on his scoring from the 2022-23 NHL season, Raymond could have earned himself a long-term deal with Detroit this summer. However, considering how the contract negotiations played out between Yzerman and captain Dylan Larkin last year, the savvy General Manager will stay prudent with his available cap space. Regardless of Raymond taking a bridge or max-term contract, his cap hit should take a decent chunk out of the Red Wings’ cap for next season.

In Perron and Kane, the former has demonstrated more of a public desire to keep his career going in the Motor City. As LeBrun mentions in the article, Yzerman may want Raymond’s contract settled before pivoting to Perron. On the other hand, Kane has been much more vague about continuing his career in Detroit and may look for a multi-year deal after an impressive rebound season with a team closer to top-tier contention.

Other free agency notes:

  • Late last night, the agency group for defenseman Yegor Zamula of the Philadelphia Flyers, Shumi Babaev Agency, indicated that the player and team would commence contract negotiation talks shortly. Zamula, hitting restricted free agency for the second time in his career, has earned arbitration rights this summer, giving him and his agency more leverage in negotiating salary. Furthermore, Zamula’s play over the 2023-24 NHL season has also increased the defenseman’s leverage this summer, scoring five goals and 21 points over 66 games, which is far and away the best production of his career up to this point.
  • In the same announcement from the Shumi Babaev Agency — the Columbus Blue Jackets are expected to begin contract talks with forward Yegor Chinakhov. Unlike Zamula, Chinakhov has not yet earned arbitration rights but is coming off a 16-goal campaign, good for fourth on the team in goal-scoring. Chinakhov’s production from this past season could be an outlier, as he saw his average time on ice jump nearly two minutes under current head coach Pascal Vincent. Nevertheless, with the Blue Jackets being desperate for offensive production, there should be plenty of motivation for a new deal on both sides of the negotiation.

Injury Updates: Soucy, Sanderson, Zub, Chinakhov

February 16, 2024 at 9:00 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet provided an update on Carson Soucy, telling reporters (video link) that the blueliner is currently listed as week-to-week.  The 29-year-old has missed close to a month with a hand injury sustained while blocking a shot.  In his first season with the Canucks after signing a three-year, $9.75MM deal with them back in July, Soucy has six points and 39 blocked shots in 21 games while logging a career-high 17:25 per night.  As things stand, the Canucks don’t have enough cap space to call anyone up from the minors so if someone else has to be promoted, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Soucy transferred to LTIR retroactively.

Other injury news from around the NHL:

  • The Senators will welcome back a pair of defensemen on Saturday as Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch relays that Jake Sanderson and Artem Zub will return from their respective lower-body injuries against Chicago. Sanderson has missed nearly three weeks with his injury and he certainly has been missed as he logs nearly 23 minutes a night for them in the final year of his entry-level deal.  As for Zub, he was out for the last two games, resulting in Ottawa having to dress only 17 skaters earlier this week before being eligible for an emergency cap-exempt recall.  The Sens now have 21 players on their active roster and that’s all they’ll be able to afford as they have less than $75K in cap space, per CapFriendly.
  • Blue Jackets winger Yegor Chinakhov will return to the lineup on Saturday versus San Jose, notes Brian Hedger of the Columbus Dispatch (Twitter link). The 23-year-old started the season on IR and then spent a bit of time in the minors.  However, since being recalled, Chinakhov has started to live up to his potential as a former first-round pick, collecting 14 goals and 10 assists in 40 games so far.  He winds up missing just one game due to the upper-body injury he sustained last weekend.

Snapshots: Hoglander, Blue Jackets, Lightning

February 16, 2024 at 5:30 pm CDT | by Brennan McClain 10 Comments

Largely expected today, the Department of Player Safety has fined Vancouver Canucks forward Nils Hoglander a total of $2,864.58 for high-sticking Detroit Red Wings defenseman Jake Walman last night, per a press release. The fine was the maximum allowable according to the current Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL and the NHLPA.

Originally, there was no penalty called on the play as Hoglander swung his stick into the side of Walman’s head as both players battled for position in front of Detroit’s net. Nevertheless, even though the in-game referees did not decide to penalize Hoglander last night, the Department of Player Safety decided the incident warranted a punishment.

This is the second time this season that the Department of Player Safety has decided to fine Hoglander with the first incident coming on November 21st for slew-footing San Jose Sharks forward Kevin Labanc. Aside from a couple of fines, Hoglander has had quite a productive season for Vancouver, scoring 17 goals and 24 points in 53 games.

Other snapshots:

  • Brian Hedger of the Columbus Dispatch reports that defenseman Ivan Provorov and forward Yegor Chinakhov have both returned to practice for the Columbus Blue Jackets. Reportedly suffering from an undisclosed injury in the team’s most recent game against the Ottawa Senators, Provorov will likely not miss any time with the injury. Chinakhov, on the other hand, did miss the game against the Senators completely but should be available tomorrow night against the San Jose Sharks.
  • In a similar fashion to Columbus, Eduardo Encina of the Tampa Bay Times reports that Tampa Bay Lightning forward Nick Paul will be a game-time decision tomorrow night against the Florida Panthers. Missing the entire third period in last night’s game against the Colorado Avalanche, Paul did miss the team practice today putting his availability up in the air. In the same report, Encina also suggests that Tanner Jeannot will likely be out another week after being activated from the team’s long-term injured reserve on February 13th.

Snapshots: Sabres, Avalanche, Blue Jackets Injuries, Rielly

February 11, 2024 at 6:48 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 8 Comments

While the Sabres sit a dozen points out of the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference, it doesn’t seem as if they’re ready to give up on this season just yet.  In his Saturday Headlines segment on Saturday, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported (video link) that Buffalo is looking to add win-now pieces.  One thing they have that many buyers won’t is cap space as CapFriendly pegs them at having over $22MM in cap room today, a number that balloons to over $36MM on trade deadline day.  Accordingly, they have the ability to add some pieces to try to overcome this sizable deficit with 31 games left in their season.

Elsewhere around the NHL:

  • The Avalanche lead the NHL in goals scored with 196, an average of 3.7 per game. Despite that, Corey Masisak of The Denver Post suggests that adding more scoring might be a good way for them to go at the trade deadline.  With the status of Valeri Nichushkin moving forward in doubt while he’s in the Player Assistance Program and the fact that the bulk of their scoring is coming from two lines, adding someone to help deepen their attack could certainly be beneficial when the checking tightens up in the playoffs.  However, cap space is quite limited and if they do opt to go that route, it could prevent them from shoring up their backup goalie spot as well.
  • The upper-body injury that Blue Jackets forward Yegor Chinakhov sustained last night will cause him to miss at least Tuesday’s game versus Ottawa, relays Aaron Portzline of The Athletic (subscription link). If Columbus wants to call up a replacement forward, they’ll need to open up a roster spot first which could be done by shifting Adam Fantilli to injured reserve.  Meanwhile, Portzline adds that defenseman Nick Blankenburg is dealing with a concussion, the second one he has sustained this season.  The 25-year-old has been shuffled back and forth between Columbus and AHL Cleveland this year but it appears he’ll be staying in the minors for a little while until he’s cleared to return.
  • In a follow-up announcement to their offer of an in-person hearing to Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly for his cross-check on Ridly Greig on Saturday, the Department of Player Safety announced (Twitter link) that Rielly accepted the offer and that the hearing will be held on Tuesday afternoon in New York. Considering Toronto plays on Tuesday night, a decision on the length of his suspension will need to be made fairly quickly after the hearing.

Evening Notes: Schultz, Coyotes Arena, Chinakhov, Malinski

February 10, 2024 at 9:00 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 5 Comments

Kraken defenseman Justin Schultz has left the team for personal reasons, relays Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times.  However, head coach Dave Hakstol is hopeful that the veteran will be able to rejoin the team in the coming days on their four-game road trip.  The 33-year-old is having a bit of a quieter year offensively with just 16 points in 42 games so far; he had 34 in 73 contests last season.  Seattle is still trying to climb back into the playoff picture but if they wind up selling closer to the deadline, Schultz could be an interesting addition to the market as a right-shot blueliner on a $3MM expiring contract.

Elsewhere around the NHL:

  • The long-running arena saga in Arizona could be taking another direction. PHNX Sports’ Craig Morgan reports (video link) that a local government source suggested that a new arena deal in North Phoenix could be wrapped up in the next three months.  Their situation was discussed in an executive session (not open to the public) at a council meeting earlier this week with the meeting believed to have gone well.  While there’s a long way to go before shovels are in the ground, it’s possible that the Coyotes could wind up with a new arena plan in the near future which could delay any potential talk of relocation.
  • The Blue Jackets announced (Twitter link) that forward Yegor Chinakhov left tonight’s game versus Tampa Bay with an upper-body injury. After a slow start to his campaign following his early-November recall, the 23-year-old has become a capable contributor for Columbus, notching 14 goals and 10 assists in 39 games heading into tonight’s action.
  • Following their loss to Florida, the Avalanche announced (Twitter link) that they’ve returned defenseman Sam Malinski to AHL Colorado. The 25-year-old was recalled on Tuesday and played that night but was scratched for their past two games.  Malinski has 10 points in 23 games with the Avs so far while logging a little over 14 minutes a night and will likely be brought back up again in the coming days.

Metropolitan Notes: Chinakhov, Haula, Kuefler

December 1, 2023 at 6:56 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Earlier this week, the agent for Blue Jackets forward Yegor Chinakhov indicated that his client was unhappy with his role and while the youngster hadn’t asked for a trade, he’d like to be moved.  Speaking with reporters today including Brian Hedger of the Columbus Post-Dispatch, the 22-year-old tried to pour cold water on that notion to an extent.  He stated his affinity for the team and market but that he simply just wants to play.  Chinakhov started the season on IR and then was sent to the AHL briefly before being recalled early last month.  Since then, he has been a regular most nights but is playing under 14 minutes per game, lately spending time on the fourth line even but has five points in 13 games.  Clearly, the 2020 first-round pick is looking to have a bigger role; he will once again be a restricted free agent in the summer but will have arbitration rights at that time for the first time.

More from the Metropolitan:

  • While the Devils didn’t get center Erik Haula back in their lineup tonight against San Jose, he might not be out much longer. Ryan Novozinsky of The Star-Ledger notes that the veteran will accompany the team on their upcoming four-game road trip.  The 32-year-old suffered a lower-body injury last week against Buffalo.  Haula is coming off back-to-back 40-plus-point seasons and has produced at a better pace than that this season with a dozen points in 18 games.
  • The Islanders have activated winger Daylan Kuefler off season-opening IR and assigned him to AHL Bridgeport, CapFriendly reports (Twitter link). The 21-year-old is in his first professional season but wasn’t able to participate in training camp after suffering an injury in the WHL playoffs back in the spring.  Last season, Kuefler had 61 points in 54 games with Kamloops while adding seven more in 13 playoff contests and four more in as many Memorial Cup appearances.

Yegor Chinakhov Reportedly Unhappy With Role, Considering Trade Request

November 28, 2023 at 8:35 am CDT | by Ethan Hetu 5 Comments

Although rookie Columbus Blue Jackets forward Dmitri Voronkov told the media last night, including The Athletic’s Aaron Portzline, that he was “going to stay” with Columbus rather than return to Russia, he wasn’t the only Russian Blue Jacket contemplating an exit. (subscription link)

The Columbus Dispatch’s Brian Hedger relays word from forward Yegor Chinakhov’s agent, Shumi Babaev, who says that his client is seeking a change to his current situation. Babaev told Hedger via text message:

He doesn’t feel they trust him, and he wants to leave. They don’t understand how bad [Chinakhov] feels.

According to Hedger, this issue relates to the fact that Chinakhov “isn’t happy playing a fourth-line role” with the Blue Jackets. General Manager Jarmo Kekäläinen declined to comment on the matter.

He currently ranks third-to-last among Blue Jackets forwards in average ice time per game, above only Voronkov, who is a rookie, and Mathieu Olivier, who is an enforcer.

It’s worth noting that Blue Jackets head coach Pascal Vincent did change up his lineup in a manner that favored Chinakhov for last night’s game, and Chinakhov responded with one of the better games of his career.

He scored a goal and added an assist as the Blue Jackets upset the Boston Bruins by a 5-2 margin.

But last night’s success still only brings Chinakhov’s total numbers to four points in 12 games, a far cry from what the Blue Jackets likely expected from the former KHL Rookie of the Year when they drafted him 21st overall at the 2020 draft. According to Hedger, Babaev “expressed Chinakhov’s concerns” to Blue Jackets management 10 days ago, but added that “no trade request has been made yet.”

Given how Chinakhov has struggled to make an impact thus far in his NHL career, it’s not exactly surprising that he’s thinking about how a change of scenery could benefit him. In 104 career games, Chinakhov has just 31 points and a career-best of 13 points in 30 games, which came last season.

Chinakhov has battled injuries along the way, though he hasn’t really had a chance to get significant ice time in the AHL and develop his game there. He is above point-per-game in 11 career AHL contests, but it appears playing Chinakhov with the Cleveland Monsters has never been seen as a legitimate development path for the forward.

Set to turn 23 in February, it’s looking increasingly as though Columbus won’t be the place where Chinakhov will be able to maximize his NHL potential. It’s possible that getting to play on his team’s third line alongside Voronkov and Cole Sillinger is exactly the kind of change Chinakhov needs, rather than a trade. But as we inch closer and closer to NHL trade season, these comments from Chinakhov’s agent cement the former top prospect as a key name to watch.

Columbus Blue Jackets Recall Yegor Chinakhov, Assign Kent Johnson To AHL

November 3, 2023 at 1:04 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 2 Comments

The Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled forward Yegor Chinakhov from the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters, per a team release issued Friday. In a corresponding transaction, the team has assigned forward Kent Johnson to Cleveland.

Chinakhov’s return from AHL assignment will likely result in his 2023-24 Blue Jackets debut tomorrow against the Capitals. The 2020 first-round pick missed a handful of games at the beginning of the season with a back injury sustained during training camp, and the Blue Jackets opted to assign him to the Monsters last week when he returned to health. Chinakhov, who signed a one-year, $800K deal to remain in Columbus last summer, had three goals and an assist in three games with Cleveland since returning from injury.

His next NHL game will be his first since December 19, 2022, when he sustained an ankle injury against the Stars that kept him out for multiple months. Expected to slide into a middle-six role on the wing, Chinakhov has 11 goals, 16 assists and 27 points in 92 NHL games dating back to his debut in the 2021-22 season. He has been extremely productive in limited action with AHL Cleveland, though, registering over a point per game.

This is disappointing for Johnson, however, who was selected fifth overall by Columbus just two years ago. He’s been given a reduced role by new head coach Pascal Vincent out of the gate, serving as a healthy scratch on two occasions and only averaging 12:43 when in the lineup, notching three points in eight games. That’s coming off the heels of a strong 16-goal, 40-point rookie season in 2022-23. Johnson has not done particularly well this season, however, with poor possession numbers backing up the dip in production. He’ll now head to the Monsters, off to a strong 5-2-0 start, and work toward regaining an everyday spot in the NHL lineup.

Blue Jackets Activate, Reassign Yegor Chinakhov

October 25, 2023 at 3:23 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Columbus Blue Jackets have activated winger Yegor Chinakhov off injured reserve and assigned him to the AHL’s Cleveland Monsters, according to a team release Wednesday.

Chinakhov, 22, sustained a back strain pre-season that sidelined him for most of training camp and the first six games of 2022-23. Now healthy, he heads to Cleveland, where he’s only played eight games since coming to North America in 2021. They’ve gone quite well, however, as the 2020 first-round pick has four goals and five assists for nine points in those AHL contests.

The early-season injury likely cost Chinakhov a roster spot, given the team’s influx of young wingers. However, don’t expect him to stick in the minors for long – he notched a respectable 13 points in 30 games with the Blue Jackets last season and posted solid possession numbers relative to his teammates. The 6-foot-1, 204-pound winger will surely be ticketed for top-line minutes in the minors while on assignment.

Assigning Chinakhov directly to the minors also means the team is intent on giving another young Russian winger, Dmitri Voronkov, at least a brief look in the NHL. The Blue Jackets recalled Voronkov earlier in the week when they placed forward Patrik Laine on injured reserve with an upper-body injury, but he hasn’t yet suited up in what will be his first NHL game. That’s expected to change tomorrow against the Canadiens, as Kent Johnson will serve as a healthy scratch so Voronkov can enter the lineup. Voronkov, 23, has played exclusively in Russia up until this season and had no points in four games with AHL Cleveland to start 2023-24.

Chinakhov has not played an NHL game since December 19, 2022, against Dallas, when he sustained an ankle injury on his first shift that sidelined him for the majority of 2022-23. After returning to health, Chinakhov finished out the season in Cleveland.
