Taxi Squad Shuffle: 03/04/21

March 4, 2021 at 12:58 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day.

West Division

  • The Los Angeles Kings have sent Daniel Brickley and Markus Phillips back to the AHL, while recalling Rasmus Kupari to the taxi squad. Kupari, 20, has dominated at the minor league level so far this season, scoring nine points in his first eight games. The 2018 first-round pick is still waiting on his first NHL appearance.
  • Logan Thompson, the AHL’s Goaltender of the Month for February, is nevertheless still a ways away from challenging for an NHL spot in Vegas. After a brief recall, the Golden Knights have reassigned Thompson to the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights.

North Division

  • The Ottawa Senators have recalled Braydon Coburn from the taxi squad ahead of their game tonight against the Flames. Coburn, 36, played just under 17 minutes the last time these two teams met.
  • Winnipeg is looking to get some of their top forward prospects more play time. The Jets announced that Kristian Vesalainen and David Gustafsson have been reassigned from the taxi squad to the AHL’s Manitoba Moose. Heading the other way is fellow forward Joona Luoto.
  • Marc Michaelis will make his NHL debut on Thursday after the Vancouver Canucks announced that he had been activated from the Season-Opening Injured Reserve and placed in the lineup. Rookie defenseman Olli Juolevi has been reassigned to the taxi squad to make room for the forward Michaelis.

Central Division

  • The Detroit Red Wings have recalled Mathias Brome and Evgeny Svechnikov from the taxi squad, suggesting the Svechnikov-Svechnikov battle is finally going to happen. Evgeny and his brother Andrei Svechnikov from the Carolina Hurricanes will do battle tonight.
  • The Dallas Stars continue to shuffle their forward depth, this time returning Ty Dellandrea to the taxi squad and recalling Joel Kiviranta and Tanner Kero. The team hopes to find the right combination up front to get back on track with this season.
  • Things are changing in Nashville. With Ryan Johansen activated from COVID Protocol and Juuse Saros headed to the injured reserve, the Predators have taken this time to make a flurry of additional changes as well. The team announced that defenseman Ben Harpur and goalie Kasimir Kaskisuo have been promoted from the taxi squad to the active roster while forward Brad Richardson has been activated from the IR to the roster. Heading down to the taxi squad is defenseman Alexandre Carrier. Joining Carrier on the squad is a trio of recalls from the minors. Forward Rem Pitlick and defenseman Jeremy Davies have been recalled from temporary AHL affiliate Chicago, while goalie Devin Cooley has been recalled from the ECHL’s Florida Everblades. Meanwhile, forward Tanner Jeannot has been reassigned to the AHL’s Wolves from the taxi squad. Anything else Nashville?

East Division

  • The New York Rangers have recalled Patrick Newell from the minor leagues and added him to their taxi squad, while sending the recently-signed Mason Geertsen back down. Geertsen signed an NHL deal and had to clear waivers, but never spent any time with the big club.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins will go back to the well on Thursday night, filling out their lineup once again with the help of forwards Josh Currie and Anthony Angello. The pair have been promoted from the taxi squad.

Derek Ryan Clears Waivers

March 3, 2021 at 11:00 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

March 3: Ryan has cleared waivers and can now be assigned to the taxi squad or minor leagues.

March 2: According to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet, the Calgary Flames have placed checking center Derek Ryan on waivers for the second time this year. He cleared just before the season began and then bounced back and forth between the taxi squad and active roster for the next month, accruing cap space for the Flames on off days. Ryan then suffered an injury but is nearing a return, and to continue that practice, he needs to clear waivers again.

Ryan, 34, has just a single point in ten games this season after failing to crack 30 a year ago. He’s in the final season of a three-year, $9.375MM contract signed in the summer of 2018 but still should be in regular rotation at the bottom of the lineup should he clear tomorrow. The Flames, who have been practicing a delicate salary tight rope walk all season, are trying to bank as much cap space as possible in order to have room for an addition at the deadline. When Ryan was injured, his daily swaps stopped and he was placed on long-term injured reserve instead.

That LTIR designation means he wasn’t able to return for at least ten games and 24 days, both thresholds that have eclipsed recently. Once healthy, he’ll have to be activated, though it’s unclear how exactly the Flames will maneuver the salary cap at that point.

Of course, there is always a chance that someone claims Ryan, though it seems very unlikely. His cap hit, performance and recent injury all point to him sliding through waivers untouched.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 03/03/21

March 3, 2021 at 10:39 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day.

West Division

  • It’s gameday for the Los Angeles Kings, meaning Tobias Bjornfot has been recalled to the active roster. Drake Rymsha, Daniel Brickley, and Marcus Phillips have all been recalled to the taxi squad from the Ontario Reign, with Sean Durzi and Akil Thomas going down to the AHL. Thomas, 21, is still waiting on his first chance at the NHL level after dominating junior and scoring two goals in his first ten professional games.
  • The Anaheim Ducks continued to shuffle their roster and taxi squad around.  Per CapFriendly, recalled from the taxi squad are Trevor Zegras, Josh Mahura, and David Backes while Anthony Stolarz was sent from the taxi squad to AHL San Diego.  With the four vacancies, Anaheim promoted Maxim Golod, Hunter Drew, and Lukas Dostal to the taxi squad from the Gulls and assigned Max Jones to the taxi squad.
  • The Arizona Coyotes have promoted Michael Chaput from the taxi squad to the NHL roster, per CapFriendly.  The 28-year-old has played in five games so far this season, averaging 10:53 per night while being held off the scoresheet.
  • The Colorado Avalanche recalled Conor Timmins and Logan O’Connor from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Both recalls were on an emergency basis.  Timmins has been held without a point in 14 games this season while O’Connor has two goals in eight contests.
  • The Minnesota Wild have recalled Gerald Mayhew and Kyle Rau from the taxi squad while transferring Marcus Johansson to IR.  Mayhew has an assist in three games this season while Rau hasn’t recorded a point in his two games.
  • The San Jose Sharks recalled Alexander True and Joachim Blichfeld from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Blichfeld is expected to make his season debut tonight while True made his season debut on Monday.
  • The St. Louis Blues promoted Jake Walman and Dakota Joshua from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly with the latter being an emergency recall.  Walman has played sparingly in two games this season while Joshua scored in his NHL debut on Monday.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights recalled Oscar Dansk and Dylan Coghlan from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Dansk’s recall means that Robin Lehner isn’t quite ready to return while Coghlan has played in nine games this season but logged just over eight minutes on Monday night.  Logan Thompson was recalled to the taxi squad from AHL Henderson to comply with the three-goalie rule.

North Division

  • Glenn Gawdin has been returned to the AHL by the Calgary Flames after a five-game stint with the big club. The 23-year-old Gawdin is quite the story of perseverance and will get another NHL chance at some point. For the Stockton Heat, who are losing Connor Zary back to his WHL team, Gawdin’s appearance will be most welcome.
  • The Ottawa Senators have reassigned Micheal Haley and Filip Gustavsson to the taxi squad, which could potentially open the door for Ryan Dzingel to make his return after making it through his quarantine. The Senators lost to the Canadiens last night but are still playing better of late, going 6-4 in their last ten.
  • The Edmonton Oilers have recalled Joakim Nygard from the taxi squad with Patrick Russell being sent to the taxi squad in a corresponding move.  Both wingers have played in four games so far this season with Russell leading in points with one assist to Nygard’s zero.
  • The Montreal Canadiens assigned Paul Byron to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  It’s a move they’ve made several times in recent days since he cleared waivers but he’s likely to be recalled on Thursday.  Cam Hillis was returned to AHL Laval in a corresponding move.

Central Division

  • The Chicago Blackhawks have assigned Brandon Pirri and Lucas Carlsson to the Rockford IceHogs of the AHL, after activating Carlsson from injured reserve. The 23-year-old defenseman had been dealing with a groin injury and likely needs some games to get back up to his previous level. In ten games this season, Carlsson has yet to record a point.
  • The Detroit Red Wings have sent Mathias Brome and Evgeny Svechnikov back to the taxi squad after another loss last night. Detroit now sits at 7-15-3 on the season, but ultimately that is exactly where they want to be in a rebuild. The team isn’t going to make the playoffs this season but will get another high draft pick to add to the prospect pipeline.
  • The Nashville Predators have made their usual daily move, sending Tanner Jeannot, Mathieu Olivier, and Ben Harpur to the taxi squad. The Predators lost again last night, having injuries mounting to their best players and trade rumors swirling about the rest of the roster.
  • The Dallas Stars have assigned Taylor Fedun and Tanner Kero to the taxi squad after last night’s loss against the Lightning. Dallas starts a two-game series against the Blue Jackets tomorrow, at which point they’ll likely make a corresponding move.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes have once again returned Alex Nedeljkovic and Jake Bean to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  The two have been shuffled back and forth regularly over the past several weeks and will almost certainly be recalled on Thursday for their next game against Detroit.
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning returned Ross Colton to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  The 24-year-old has a goal in two games so far this season.

East Division

  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have sent Frederick Gaudreau back to the minor leagues while moving Drew O’Connor, Josh Currie, and Anthony Angello onto the taxi squad. With the team also moving Jason Zucker to long-term injured reserve, they have a little cap flexibility if they want to go after someone through trade.
  • The Boston Bruins made several roster moves in advance of their game versus Washington, per CapFriendly.  Trent Frederic and Urho Vaakanainen were recalled from the taxi squad while Greg McKegg was sent back to the taxi squad.  Additionally, Zach Senyshyn was recalled to the taxi squad from AHL Providence.
  • The Buffalo Sabres returned Jacob Bryson to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  The rookie has certainly held his own in Buffalo’s lineup over the last ten days, averaging nearly 18 minutes per night over his first four NHL contests.
  • Oliver Wahlstrom’s daily shuffling continues as the New York Islanders assigned him back to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  The 20-year-old is on a five-game point streak and will undoubtedly be recalled for tomorrow’s game against Buffalo.
  • The New York Rangers loaned Igor Shesterkin, Libor Hajek, and K’Andre Miller to the taxi squad in their normal off day cap-saving moves, per CapFriendly.  Keith Kinkaid was recalled to the active roster to meet the two-goalie minimum while Ty Ronning was loaned from the taxi squad to AHL Hartford.
  • The Philadelphia Flyers assigned Connor Bunnaman to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 03/02/21

March 2, 2021 at 12:57 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day.

West Division

  • The San Jose Sharks have completed a whole whack of transactions today. Stefan Noesen, Nicolas Meloche, Noah Gregor, Sasha Chmelevski and Alexei Melnichuk have all been returned to the AHL, while Joachim Blichfeld, Nick DeSimone, Kurtis Gabriel, Joel Kellman, and Josef Korenar have all been recalled to the taxi squad.
  • The Los Angeles Kings have sent Troy Grosenick to the AHL, while recalling Matthew Villalta to be the team’s taxi squad goaltender for the time being. Grosenick has been passed around the league but still doesn’t have any games under his belt this season.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights have recalled Tomas Jurco to the taxi squad, reassigning Logan Thompson to the Henderson Silver Knights in the process. Jurco, who played 12 games for the Edmonton Oilers last season, has two points in seven AHL contests.

North Division

  • After it was announced that Derek Stepan will miss the rest of the regular season, the Ottawa Senators have made a few roster moves. Erik Brannstrom and Micheal Haley have been recalled from the taxi squad. Braydon Coburn and Matthew Peca have taken their place. Filip Gustavsson has been recalled from the AHL.
  • The Montreal Canadiens have recalled Cam Hillis from the AHL, sending him to the taxi squad. The 20-year-old forward is another interesting prospect in the Canadiens system, selected 66th overall in 2018 and coming off an outstanding OHL campaign in 2019-20. He failed to score in his professional debut for the Laval Rocket, but had 83 points in 62 games for the Guelph Storm last season.
  • Tucker Poolman is healthy and has been activated from the injured reserve. The Winnipeg Jets have sent Logan Stanley down to the taxi squad to open up a spot on the blue line.

Central Division

  • The Dallas Stars have recalled a trio of players from the taxi squad while sending just one back. Ty Dellandrea, Taylor Fedun, and Tanner Kero have been activated to the roster, while Joel Kiviranta will take a break.

East Division

  • The Boston Bruins have sent Karson Kuhlman to the AHL, where he’s currently playing for the Providence Bruins in an afternoon matchup. Kuhlman, 25, has played three games for Boston this season.
  • Ty Ronning has been recalled by the New York Rangers and placed on the taxi squad. The 23-year-old forward has one goal in two games for the Hartford Wolf Pack this season.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 03/01/21

March 1, 2021 at 9:27 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day.

West Division

  • The Vegas Golden Knights have swapped goaltenders, recalling Oscar Dansk from the AHL’s Henderson Silver Knights and sending young Dylan Ferguson back in his place. Dansk has spent much of the season as Vegas’ No. 2 or 3 but hasn’t seen any game action, so the team has made an effort to move him to Henderson now that the AHL season has begun.

North Division

  • The Ottawa Senators have recalled Braydon Coburn from the taxi squad, while flipping several other players between it and the AHL. Logan Brown and Filip Gustavsson are on their way back to the Belleville Senators, while Clark Bishop and Kevin Mandolese have been recalled to the taxi squad.
  • The Montreal Canadiens have done their own taxi squad goaltending flip, sending Michael McNiven back to the AHL and recalling Charlie Lindgren. Lindgren has made two starts for the Laval Rocket this season, recording an .875 save percentage.

Central Division

  • The Detroit Red Wings have completed their daily roster move, assigning Mathias Brome, Evgeny Svechnikov, and Alex Biega to the taxi squad. The Red Wings move players from the roster every off day in order to save salary and bank cap space.
  • The Florida Panthers have made several transactions, most notably recalling Owen Tippett and Riley Stillman from the taxi squad. After clearing waivers, Brett Connolly has been moved to the taxi squad, while Noel Acciari has been activated from injured reserve. Anthony Duclair and Noah Juulsen have both been moved to injured reserve as well.
  • The Nashville Predators have reassigned Eeli Tolvanen to the taxi squad as they always do on an off day, but this time he’ll be joined by Mathieu Olivier who has been activated from injured reserve and sent to the squad as well.

East Division

  • Brandon Davidson has been reassigned to the Buffalo Sabres taxi squad as the team tries to regroup for tomorrow’s game. The Sabres are reeling after failing to score a single goal in a weekend back-to-back, losing both to the Flyers 3-0.
  • Those Flyers have sent Samuel Morin to the AHL, where he can continue to get in some games with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Morin has transitioned from defense to wing this season but hasn’t managed a point in four games with Philadelphia.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 02/28/21

February 28, 2021 at 1:27 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 1 Comment

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day.

North Division

  • The Ottawa Senators announced they have assigned defenseman Erik Brannstrom to the taxi squad. Brannstrom has been up and down this year and looks to be another game in which he will sit out of Ottawa’s lineup. The 21-year-old has two goals and two assists in nine games with Ottawa this season.
  • The Calgary Flames returned Glenn Gawdin and Oliver Kylington to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  The pair were recalled for Saturday’s game against Ottawa and will likely be brought back up for their next game against the Sens on Monday.
  • The Montreal Canadiens assigned Paul Byron to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  It’s a move that has been made frequently since he cleared waivers earlier this month with him getting recalled on game days.
  • The Winnipeg Jets assigned Logan Stanley to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  He was recalled for Saturday’s game against Montreal after Tucker Poolman was placed on IR.

East Division

  • The Buffalo Sabres made several roster moves as the team announced they have recalled defenseman Brandon Davidson from the taxi squad. That roster spot on the taxi squad has been replaced by forward C.J. Smith, who was brought up from the Rochester Americans of the AHL. The team also assigned defenseman Jacob Bryson from the Sabres back to the taxi squad and moved Casey Fitzgerald from the taxi squad back to the AHL. Davidson has already appeared in two games for the Sabres this year.
  • The New Jersey Devils announced they recalled forward Mikhail Maltsev from the taxi squad. To fill the open spot on the taxi squad, the Devils have recalled defenseman Connor Carrick from the Binghamton Devils of the AHL. The 22-year-old Maltsev has a goal in four games for New Jersey. He is expected to play and fill in for Nico Hischier, who is considered day-to-day.
  • The Boston Bruins made several moves in advance of their game today against the Rangers, per CapFriendly.  Recalled from the taxi squad were Greg McKegg, Steven Kampfer, and Karson Kuhlman while going to the taxi squad were Trent Frederic, Urho Vaakanainen, and Kampfer (after the game was played).
  • As has become a daily custom, the New York Rangers made several roster moves before their contest against Boston, per CapFriendly.  Recalled from the taxi squad were Igor Shesterkin, Libor Hajek, and Jonny Brodzinski.  Keith Kinkaid was sent back to the taxi squad while Tarmo Reunanen and Tim Gettinger were re-assigned to AHL Hartford.

Central Division

  • The Columbus Blue Jackets assigned two taxi squad players to the minors. The team announced that it sent forwards Zac Dalpe and Ryan MacInnis to the Cleveland Monsters of the AHL. Both players were recalled to the taxi squad on Thursday. The 31-year-old Dalpe has already played five games with Cleveland, posting three goals and four points. The 25-year-old MacInnis did appear in 10 NHL games with the Blue Jackets last year, but has also only appeared in five AHL games this year with a goal and an assist. UPDATE: The Blue Jackets have announced just a few hours later that both Dalpe and MacInnis have been recalled back to the taxi squad from Cleveland after the Cleveland Monsters game was postponed due to COVID-19 protocols.
  • The Detroit Red Wings have recalled defenseman Alex Biega from the taxi squad. The blueliner has been up and down all season between the Red Wings and the practice squad. The 32-year-old has appeared in just two NHL games this year.
  • With the loss of Jarred Tinordi on waivers to the Boston Bruins, the Nashville Predators announced they have recalled defenseman Ben Harpur from the taxi squad. Harpur, who has been going up and down between the NHL and taxi squads this year, has found himself in the lineup the last three games, averaging 17:32 of ice time and looks like he will continue to stay in the lineup for now.
  • The Dallas Stars have reassigned forward Rhett Gardner to the taxi squad. Gardner, also a player who has been up and down quite a bit this year, was recalled to Dallas Saturday. The 25-year-old has appeared in four games for Dallas.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes have returned Alex Nedeljkovic and Jake Bean to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  The two have been recalled and sent down frequently over the past month depending on whether or not the team playing that day.
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning sent Andreas Borgman back to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  With the team off until Tuesday, there’s no need for them to carry more than the minimum six defenders on their active roster.

West Division

  • With a day off Sunday, the San Jose Sharks announced they have assigned forward Stefan Noesen and defenseman Jacob Middleton to the San Jose Barracuda of the AHL. The 28-year-old Noesen has appeared in five games for the Sharks with no points to show for it. Middleton has played in one game for the Sharks and two for the Barracuda as he still fights for a full-time role in the NHL.  They also sent Sasha Chmelevski, Noah Gregor, and Frederik Claesson to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.
  • The Arizona Coyotes announced they have assigned forwards Michael Chaput and Dryden Hunt to the taxi squad. The team also assigned Frederik Gauthier from the taxi squad to the Tucson Roadrunners of the AHL.
  • The Colorado Avalanche returned Logan O’Connor and Dan Renouf to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Both players suited up on Saturday against Arizona with Renouf playing his first NHL game since the 2016-17 season in the process.
  • The Los Angeles Kings assigned Tobias Bjornfot and Lias Andersson to their taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  The team also recalled Bokondji Imama from the taxi squad while assigning Drake Rymsha to AHL Ontario.
  • The St. Louis Blues returned defenseman Jake Walman to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  He has played in just two games with the Blues this season, often serving as their emergency defender.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights assigned Logan Thompson to the taxi squad along with Dylan Coghlan, per CapFriendly.  In a corresponding move, Dylan Ferguson was moved from the taxi squad back to Henderson of the AHL.

Washington Capitals Recall Ilya Samsonov, Intend To Start Him

February 28, 2021 at 12:25 pm CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg Leave a Comment

The Washington Capitals announced they have recalled goaltender Ilya Samsonov from the taxi squad and head coach Peter Laviolette said that he intends to start the netminder, who will be making his first appearance for Washington since Jan. 17. Veteran Craig Anderson has been returned to the taxi squad.

Samsonov has appeared in just two games this season before he and a number of Russian teammates found themselves on the COVID-19 protocol list. Once activated, the team sent him to the Hershey Bears of the AHL to find his game, but the 24-year-old has struggled there instead, posting a 3.25 GAA and a .869 save percentage in four games. Samsonov’s last game on Friday showed promise as he picked up the win, while allowing just three goals. The team hopes that giving him an easy assignment against the New Jersey Devils, who are 4-5-1 in their last 10 games, might make for an easy transition back to the NHL.

The Capitals have been relying most of the season on rookie Vitek Vanecek, who has played quite well considering the workload they have placed upon him. Vanecek has posted a 2.81 GAA and a .909 save percentage in 17 appearances. Depending on Samsonov’s success, Vanecek will likely return to the back-up role that he was projected to take this year.

The Capitals allowed starting goaltender Braden Holtby to walk in free agency this offseason as they felt that Samsonov was the goaltender of the future after an impressive season in 2019-20. In 26 games, he put up 16 wins and a .913 save percentage. He didn’t appear in the playoffs, however, due to a lower-body injury and now has seen little time so far this year.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 02/27/21

February 27, 2021 at 9:31 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day.

North Division

  • The Senators announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled defenseman Erik Brannstrom from the taxi squad in advance of their game against Calgary. The 21-year-old has two goals and two assists in eight games so far this season.
  • The Canadiens shuffled up their taxi squad composition, sending Alex Belzile and Cale Fleury to AHL Laval while recalling Brandon Baddock and Joel Teasdale, per the AHL’s Transactions log.  Baddock and Teasdale won’t actually join Montreal but needed to be recalled to keep their taxi squad at the minimum number of players.  As expected, Paul Byron was also recalled from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.
  • The Jets announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled defenseman Logan Stanley from the taxi squad.  He will take the place of Tucker Poolman who was placed on injured reserve.  Stanley has played in 13 games so far with Winnipeg this season, averaging just under 12 minutes per game.
  • Toronto has changed up their taxi squad, announcing (Twitter link) that they’ve assigned winger Alex Galchenyuk and defenseman Martin Marincin to the minors while recalling winger Kenny Agostino and blueliner Timothy Liljegren to the taxi squad in their place.  The moves are basically to get Marincin and Galchenyuk some game action with neither suiting up over the last couple of weeks.
  • The Flames recalled center Glenn Gawdin and defenseman Oliver Kylington from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Gawdin was in their lineup against Ottawa on the fourth line while Kylington was once again a healthy scratch.

East Division

  • Ilya Samsonov is back with Washington as the team announced (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled him back to the taxi squad from AHL Hershey. Samsonov has played in four games with the Bears as he works his way back from a bout with COVID-19, posting a .869 SV%.  The Capitals returned Pheonix Copley to Hershey in a corresponding move.
  • The Devils have assigned defenseman Connor Carrick from the taxi squad to Binghamton of the AHL, per the AHL’s Transactions log. The 26-year-old has only played once for New Jersey this season and cleared waivers earlier this month but will now get an opportunity to get some playing time in the minors.  Meanwhile, Matt Tennyson was recalled to New Jersey’s taxi squad.
  • Jared McCann is back, activated off the the injured reserve by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Joining him on the roster is Anthony Angello, recalled from the taxi squad. Drew O’Connor has been reassigned to the taxi squad in Angello’s place. Sam Miletic, also previously on the IR, has been activated and assigned to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.

Central Division

  • The Predators have recalled winger Eeli Tolvanen from the taxi squad, per their transactions log.  The 21-year-old has been shuffled back and forth on a near-daily basis this month but still has managed to play in 10 games for Nashville this season, notching two goals and an assist.
  • The Red Wings announced (Twitter link) that they have recalled center Frans Nielsen and winger Evgeny Svechnikov from their taxi squad.  Nielsen cleared waivers earlier this week while Svechnikov has been limited to just three games with AHL Grand Rapids this season.  Detroit also recalled goaltender Kaden Fulcher to the taxi squad from the Griffins.
  • Rhett Gardner is back up with the Dallas Stars. The team announced that the big, physical forward has been recalled from the taxi squad. Gardner has yet to find the score sheet through four games with Dallas and two games with AHL Texas so far this season, but was productive in the minors last year and hopes to find that touch soon.

West Division

  • The Sharks have sent winger Kurtis Gabriel to the AHL’s Barracuda from their taxi squad, per the AHL’s Transactions log.  The 27-year-old has played just one game with San Jose this season and should benefit from being able to get into a game at the minor league level.
  • The Arizona Coyotes have recalled forward Dryden Hunt from the taxi squad. Hunt, in his first season with the ’Yotes, has two points in five games but has spent much of his time on the taxi squad.
  • Lias Andersson has been recalled from the taxi squad, the Los Angeles Kings announced. This has been a common transaction for L.A. this season, as Andersson is waiver-exempt and can move freely between the taxi squad and active roster. The young center has played in more than half of the Kings’ games so far.

This post will be updated throughout the day.

  • The Anaheim Ducks have recalled Adam Henrique from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly, while sending Vinni Lettieri down to the taxi squad.  Henrique cleared waivers last weekend and is in the midst of a tough season with just three goals and an assist in 16 games.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights have assigned Patrick Brown back to AHL Henderson.  He was recalled to the taxi squad on Thursday but hasn’t played in the NHL this season.  He has a goal and an assist in four games with the Silver Knights this season.

North Division

  • The Ottawa Senators have kicked things off with their daily roster move, re-assigning Erik Brannstrom to the taxi squad. The young defenseman will be joined there by Filip Gustavsson, who is taking over the taxi squad goaltender from Kevin Mandolese for the time being. Brannstrom scored another goal last night for the Senators and will likely be back up by their next game.
  • The Calgary Flames have assigned Glenn Gawdin and Zac Rinaldo to their taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Gawdin made his NHL debut last weekend and has played in four games since while Rinaldo has played just once this season, logging only 2:04 of ice time.
  • The Montreal Canadiens returned Paul Byron to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  The move extends Byron’s waiver exemption and saves a bit of cap space although he’ll likely be recalled in advance of Saturday’s game against Winnipeg.
  • The Toronto Maple Leafs returned Joseph Woll to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  He has been dressing as the backup goalie this week on an emergency recall although with Jack Campbell being close to returning, Woll may just remain with the taxi squad until Frederik Andersen returns.

Central Division

  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled Veini Vehvilainen from the AHL, sending Gavin Bayreuther and Matiss Kivlenieks back in his stead. The Cleveland Monsters play a back-to-back against the Rockford IceHogs over the weekend.
  • The Dallas Stars have moved Landon Bow and Rhett Gardner back onto the taxi squad after Bow served as the backup last night. The 25-year-old goaltender hasn’t appeared in an NHL game since the 2018-19 season.
  • The Nashville Predators have recalled Tanner Jeannot to the taxi squad, rewarding a young player that is off to a blistering start in the minor leagues. Jeannot has eight points through his first six games for the Chicago Wolves. The team has also sent Sean Malone back to the AHL, while moving Eeli Tolvanen and Ben Harpur to the taxi squad for the time being.
  • The Chicago Blackhawks made several roster moves today, sending Nicolas Beaudin from the NHL roster to AHL Rockford along with Wyatt Kalynuk and Reese Johnson, who were loaned from the taxi squad.  Brad Morrison, Mikael Hakkarainen, and Matt Tomkins were all recalled to the taxi squad from the IceHogs, the latter being required with Collin Delia being sent to Rockford on a conditioning assignment.  He will officially remain on Chicago’s roster while he’s down there.
  • The Detroit Red Wings continued their daily Mathias Brome moves, assigning the winger back to the taxi squad.  He has been sent there on ten separate occasions this season but has played in all but two games with Detroit this season.
  • The Carolina Hurricanes assigned Jake Bean and Steven Lorentz to their taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Both players suited up on Thursday against Tampa Bay and could be brought back with the team set to play Florida tomorrow.
  • The Tampa Bay Lightning returned Gemel Smith to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  He played just over nine minutes versus Carolina and will likely be brought back up on Saturday.

East Division

  • The Washington Capitals have sent Ilya Samsonov back to the AHL, where the Hershey Bears have a game tonight against the Binghamton Devils. Samsonov has played three AHL games as he works his way back, but hasn’t fared all that well, posting an .859 save percentage.
  • The New Jersey Devils have assigned Matt Tennyson to the AHL, recalling Joshua Jacobs in his place. Jacobs, 25, played in two games for the Devils last season but has been in the minor leagues for the vast majority of his professional career.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins shuffled up their taxi squad, sending Jordy Bellerive to AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton while sending Josh Currie down to the taxi squad.  Both had been up on the taxi squad since last Friday but hadn’t seen any game action with Currie getting a one-day stint on the NHL roster yesterday.
  • The Buffalo Sabres have returned Rasmus Asplund and Jacob Bryson to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Both players were brought up on Thursday and could be recalled again with a pair of games against Philadelphia on tap this weekend.
  • The New York Islanders have sent Oliver Wahlstrom back to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  It’s a familiar assignment for the 20-year-old who has four points in a dozen games so far this season.
  • The New York Rangers made another large series of roster moves, recalling Colin Blackwell, Libor Hajek, and Jonny Brodzinski from the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Tarmo Reunanen and Tim Gettinger were recalled to the taxi squad from AHL Hartford.
  • With Jakub Voracek, Oskar Lindblom, and Scott Laughton all being instated, the Philadelphia Flyers returned Connor Bunnaman and Andy Andreoff to the taxi squad, per CapFriendly.  Meanwhile, Isaac Ratcliffe was assigned to Lehigh Valley of the AHL.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 02/25/21

February 25, 2021 at 10:07 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

There has been plenty of roster movement between NHL teams and the taxi squad on a daily basis this season. Although some major names may be highlighted in separate articles, this is where you’ll find the majority of that shuffle news each day.

West Division

  •  The Vegas Golden Knights have recalled Patrick Brown and Logan Thompson to the taxi squad, now that they’re a day closer to getting back into action against the Anaheim Ducks. The team doesn’t have to play the game that they expected today after the latest league postponement.

North Division

  • The Ottawa Senators have made several moves, not the least of which is bringing back Erik Brannstrom from the taxi squad. Matthew Peca will come with him, while Logan Brown backfills from the minor leagues. Derek Stepan, who was injured earlier this week, has been moved to IR.

Central Division

  • The Columbus Blue Jackets have recalled Emil Bemstrom from the taxi squad, while moving Zac Dalpe and Ryan MacInnis up from the minor leagues. Bemstrom, 21, went scoreless in his first five games this season.
  • The Detroit Red Wings recalled both Mathias Brome and Danny DeKeyser from the taxi squad once again, this time moving Frans Nielsen down in their place. Nielsen, 36, hasn’t scored a goal yet this season in 19 games and has just 12 points in his last 79 contests for Detroit.
  • The Dallas Stars have recalled Landon Bow from the taxi squad, meaning another goaltender may be getting the night completely off. The Stars are set to face the Florida Panthers this evening and Anton Khudobin has faced 94 shots over the last few days.
  • Those Panthers have made their own moves, recalling Mason Marchment and Kevin Connauton from the taxi squad. Owen Tippett has been sent there in their place, while Grigori Denisenko is up from the AHL to fill the other spot.

East Division

  • Ilya Samsonov has been recalled from the minor leagues to the taxi squad by the Washington Capitals, but Vitek Vanecek is expected to start tonight’s Capitals game.
  • After losing Jason Zucker to injury, the Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled Josh Currie from the taxi squad. Anthony Angello has been added to the taxi squad, while Zucker was placed on injured reserve retroactive to February 23.
