Metro Notes: Morrow, Carrier, Sorokin, Beckman, Pavelski

The Carolina Hurricanes are dealing with a few injuries as team reporter Walt Ruff shares that defenseman Scott Morrow and forward William Carrier are dealing with lower-body injuries. Morrow’s is not considered serious with him expected back at practice tomorrow but the team medical staff is still evaluating Carrier.

Morrow was originally selected with the 40th overall pick of the 2021 NHL Draft by the Hurricanes and is largely considered the team’s second-best defensive prospect behind Alexander Nikishin. He had a relatively small chance of cracking Carolina’s blue line out of training camp despite making his NHL debut with the Hurricanes last year. It will be his first full professional season since ending his tenure at the University of Massachusetts and he’s expected to take on a key role with the organization’s AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves.

Carrier was brought in as an unrestricted free agent this summer to a long-term six-year, $12MM contract to serve in the team’s bottom six. The former Stanley Cup champion winger is largely known for his physicality but is only two years removed from scoring 16 goals in a season with the Vegas Golden Knights. The Hurricanes could create one of the most physically punishing lines in the league if they pair Carrier with team captain Jordan Staal when fully healthy.

  • New York Islanders’ Ilya Sorokin continues to progress in his recovery from offseason back surgery and is still expected to start the season on time. Stefen Rosner of The Hockey News reported earlier today that Sorokin has already resumed skating but has failed to appear in a team practice up to this point. He will still have limited time to get into regular season mode as he looks to improve upon a down year in which he produced a .906 SV% and 3.01 GAA in 55 starts.
  • Adam Beckman’s first preseason with the New Jersey Devils is off to a slow start with James Nicholas of New Jersey Hockey Now reporting he is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Beckman was acquired by the Devils from the Minnesota Wild a few days before Game Seven of the Stanley Cup Final in late June. He’s not expected to be a part of New Jersey’s roster for the upcoming season. Still, he could have a valuable role with their AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets, after scoring 19 goals and 33 points in 51 games for the AHL’s Iowa Wild last year.
  • Longtime NHL veteran Joe Pavelski appears to be moving quickly onto his next plans after retirement. The Pittsburgh Penguins TV play-by-play announcer, Josh Getzoff, reported today that Pavelski was at the team’s training camp with general manager Kyle Dubas and assistant general manager Jason Spezza. There has been no indication since the Penguins are considering Pavelski for a role in their front office but it may be a small insight into Pavelski’s future in the NHL.

Hurricanes Sign Scott Morrow To Entry-Level Contract

The Carolina Hurricanes have signed top prospect Scott Morrow to a three-year, entry-level contract (Twitter link). The deal is set to begin immediately, with Morrow able to earn an $807.5K cap hit at the NHL level this season. He also has the potential to earn upwards of $277.5K in signing bonuses across the course of the deal. Morrow was set to become a free agent in August, if the Hurricanes didn’t sign him, after being drafted in the second round of the 2021 NHL Draft.

Morrow has emerged as a top collegiate defenseman over the last three seasons, spending each season with the University of Massachusetts. Playing on the blue-line, Morrow has managed 94 points in 109 games. He earned a Hobey Baker Award nomination this season and a Hockey East All-Rookie Team nod in 2022. Morrow is at his best with the puck on his stick, capable of embarrassing opponents with flashy puckmoves and great finesse-skating. He rotates around the offensive zone seamlessly, showing a great understanding of how to find and exploit openings in the defense. Skeptics have called his off-puck play into question since his draft year – and while his collegiate play hasn’t fully put those worries to rest, Morrow has proven his high-tempo offense is effective enough to mitigate any other concerns. His all-out offense matches up well with how Carolina has utilized players like Brent Burns and Brady Skjei. Morrow could get a chance to test that match soon, with his first pro deal set to start immediately and placing Morrow on Carolina’s NHL roster.

Hurricanes Expected To Sign Scott Morrow

The Hurricanes are expected to get defense prospect Scott Morrow inked to an entry-level deal before his exclusive signing rights expire in August 2025, reports Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Other teams have been calling the Hurricanes about trading for his rights, with some doubt circulating that he would sign in Carolina, but that talk has now ceased.

Morrow, 21, had his junior season with UMass come to an end Thursday after dropping an overtime heartbreaker to Denver in the regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament. He has one season remaining of collegiate eligibility and hasn’t decided if he’ll turn pro ahead of next season, but all signs point to the Canes getting a deal signed either this summer or next.

The offensive-minded blue-liner was taken with the 40th overall pick in 2021, which found its way to Carolina via Nashville and Los Angeles as part of the Viktor Arvidsson trade and a subsequent pick swap. Drafted straight out of high school, Morrow was among the most skilled defensemen in the class but had his draft stock limited by defensive shortcomings. Those haven’t exactly faded away as his career with UMass has progressed, but he has consistently managed to dominate offensively and in transition. The Connecticut native has 28 goals, 66 assists and 94 points in 109 games, ranking second among all NCAA defensemen in scoring over the past three years. Only Canadiens prospect Lane Hutson has more.

Morrow checked in at #3 in The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler’s yearly ranking of Hurricanes prospects, trailing only top KHL blue-liner Alexander Nikishin among defenders. With the future of most of Carolina’s blue line uncertain – Jalen Chatfield, Tony DeAngelo, Brett Pesce, and Brady Skjei are all pending UFAs – Morrow is in line to play a significant NHL role within a few years’ time. Expecting him to be plopped into the Canes’ opening night lineup this fall might be bullish, though. If Carolina can secure a full-time AHL affiliate next season, some time in the minors would be beneficial for Morrow to adjust to the pro game and avoid being an unplayable defensive liability when he reaches the majors.

Metropolitan Notes: Jarry, Rangers, Morrow

While Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry is eligible to sign a contract extension at any point now, Tim Benz of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review argues that the window to do so is much narrower with GM Ron Hextall’s general hesitance to work on in-season extensions.  The 27-year-old has one year left on his deal that carries a $3.5MM cap hit and coming off a season that saw him post a 2.42 GAA with a .919 SV% in 58 games, he has a strong case to add a couple million to his next AAV based on the contracts handed out to the top goalies in free agency earlier this week.  With that in mind, Benz suggests that Pittsburgh’s best strategy might be to wait as with so much of their roster locked up long-term already, if the team wants to have any sort of roster flexibility at all, it might have to come from the goaltending position and locking up Jarry now would take away that option.

  • While the Rangers have nearly $5MM in cap space left per CapFriendly, they still have to re-sign RFA winger Kaapo Kakko and add a depth defender or two. Beyond that, Larry Brooks of the New York Post suggests that GM Chris Drury should be sitting on his remaining cap space rather than trying to find a way to add another piece this summer.  New York didn’t need to rely on banking in-season cap space a year ago since they were well under the Upper Limit but that won’t be the case anymore.  Accordingly, if they think they’re going to want to add a piece or two in-season, the only way to have a chance of doing that is to bank as much cap space as possible early on to create enough room for those additions closer to the trade deadline.
  • Hurricanes GM Don Waddell told Luke DeCock of the Raleigh News & Observer that he expects prospect defenseman Scott Morrow to turn pro after next season. The 19-year-old was a second-round selection (40th overall) back in 2021 but played quite well at UMass in his freshman year, notching 13 goals and 20 assists in just 38 games.  If he’s able to build on that performance in 2022-23, Waddell feels that Morrow would be reaching a point where there will be nothing left to work on in college even though he’d still have two years of eligibility left at that point.
