Central Notes: Kaprizov, Parayko, Ehlers, Wiesblatt

The Wild have been slumping lately with four straight losses, dropping them to the second Wild Card spot in the West.  However, there could be some help on the horizon soon as Michael Russo of The Athletic reports (subscription link) that the hope is that winger Kirill Kaprizov could be available to return to the lineup on Wednesday against San Jose.  The 27-year-old has missed more than two months with a lower-body injury, one that caused him to miss time earlier in the season as well.  Kaprizov has been one of the top players in the league when healthy as his 1.41 points per game average ranks fifth in the league.  Unfortunately for him and Minnesota, he has only played in 37 games although that number may be going up soon.

  • While Blues defenseman Colton Parayko has resumed skating, head coach Jim Montgomery indicated to reporters, including Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic (Twitter link), that he’s not comfortable about putting him into the lineup just yet. The 31-year-old is trying to return earlier than expected from a knee injury but Montgomery acknowledged that there were a couple of instances in practice that showed he’s not ready to return yet.  Still, it would appear that Parayko is getting close to coming back which would be a big boost to their back end with him being their number one blueliner.
  • It appears that Jets winger Nikolaj Ehlers has avoided serious injury after blocking two shots off his foot on Thursday as Paul Friesen of the Winnipeg Sun relays that Ehlers is listed as day-to-day and could play tonight against Utah. In the final year of his contract leading to UFA eligibility for the first time this summer, Ehlers is one point shy of his career-high in points and has 24 goals and 39 assists through 67 games this season.  With Winnipeg slipping a bit and Dallas on a run, they’ll need Ehlers back quickly to help them try to hold onto top spot in the division.
  • The Predators have returned winger Ozzy Wiesblatt to AHL Milwaukee, per a team announcement. The 23-year-old was recalled on Thursday and got into his fifth game of the season that night, recording five hits in a little over 11 minutes of ice time.  Wiesblatt will now return to the Admirals where he has 37 points in 61 games, good for third on the team in scoring.

Predators Recall Ozzy Wiesblatt

The Predators announced this morning that they’ve recalled right-winger Ozzy Wiesblatt from AHL Milwaukee. It’s his fourth recall of the season and his first since last month’s trade deadline. It’s only the second recall Nashville has made out of four allowed since March 7.

Wiesblatt, 23, has been in Milwaukee for most of the season. The former Sharks first-rounder has enjoyed something of a breakout season in Milwaukee, scoring 14-23–37 in 61 games with a plus-nine rating that all stands as the best of his professional career. That’s earned him a few looks in Nashville’s lineup throughout the year, posting an assist and a plus-two rating in four games. He’s averaged 11:03 per contest and has graded out well defensively, controlling 57% of expected goals despite starting 84% of his even-strength shifts in the defensive zone.

As the Predators wrap up a highly disappointing regular season and have been mathematically eliminated from playoff contention for quite some time, they’re hoping Wiesblatt can continue to play well in limited minutes down the stretch and potentially grab a job on next fall’s opening night roster. They acquired him from San Jose last summer and sent the signing rights to Egor Afanasyev, who opted to return home to Russia, the other way. While his entry-level contract was set to expire this year, he signed a two-year, two-way extension with Nashville back in November to keep him off this summer’s restricted free agent market.

Wiesblatt could slot into the lineup tonight against the Stars after Nashville dressed 11 forwards and seven defensemen for its last two games with Jonathan Marchessault and Colton Sissons sidelined. He’ll likely do so on a line with Kieffer Bellows and Fedor Svechkov, the team’s Brooks Bratten reports. That means 2023 first-rounder Matthew Wood will have to wait a little longer to make his NHL debut after signing with the club last weekend.

Predators Recall Ozzy Wiesblatt

The Predators have recalled winger Ozzy Wiesblatt from AHL Milwaukee, Nick Kieser of 102.5 The Game reports. No corresponding transaction is necessary since Nashville opened a roster spot in last night’s trade with the Penguins.

Wiesblatt, 22, earns his third recall of the season after a torrid stretch of play in the minors. The Sharks 2020 first-rounder has 2-5–7 in his last five games with Milwaukee and is now up to 14-18–32 in 51 games on the year.

The feisty 5’10” winger has seen his game take off in the Preds organization after they acquired him from San Jose last offseason in exchange for the signing rights to Egor Afanasyev. His development had stalled in the Sharks’ farm system, where he posted just 11-18–29 in 85 games with the Barracuda across three seasons. He’s now outperformed that total production in just months with Milwaukee.

That explosion has led to a pair of previous recalls this year, yielding his NHL debut. He’s yet to record a point in three appearances but has a plus-one rating while averaging 11:10 per game. He’s recorded a shot on goal and five hits, but the Preds have been shelled 45-16 in shot attempts in his even-strength minutes. Nonetheless, he’ll get another shot in the lineup tonight against Seattle with Thomas Novak dealt to Pittsburgh and pickup Michael Bunting still recovering from an appendectomy.

Minor Transactions: 2/9/25

The league will continue to see many AHL demotions today after all but four teams wrapped up their pre-4 Nations Face-Off break schedule on Saturday. We’ve already seen a few this morning, namely in Pittsburgh and Boston, and we will continue to track the rest in this article as fringe players head to the minors to get playing time over the next few weeks.

  • The Predators announced they’ve reassigned wingers Joakim Kemell, Ozzy Wiesblatt, and defenseman Kevin Gravel to AHL Milwaukee. They now have three open roster spots, two of which could go to IR-bound Mark Jankowski and Jeremy Lauzon in the likely event they’re ready to return from injury when their schedule resumes on Feb. 22. The most notable of the trio is Kemell, who made his NHL debut across Nashville’s Friday-Saturday back-to-back and managed eight shots on goal across the pair of games. However, he’s still looking for his first NHL point. The 2022 first-rounder has 9-16–25 in 38 AHL contests this season.
  • Wild winger Liam Ohgren will return to AHL Iowa over the break, per a team announcement. The fellow 2022 first-rounder has bounced between Minnesota and Iowa this year but spent the past couple of weeks filling in the Wild’s top six with Marcus Johansson and Kirill Kaprizov missing time. It hasn’t been an overly productive first look in the NHL for the Swedish winger, who’s managed 2-4–6 in 23 appearances since debuting late last season. He’ll likely be back up after the break, with Kaprizov still set to miss another couple of weeks following lower-body surgery.
  • The Sharks reassigned forwards Collin Graf and Andrew Poturalski and defenseman Jack Thompson to AHL San Jose, the club said. Their post-break returns likely depend on the health of Nikolai Kovalenko, Jan Rutta, and Nico Sturm, all of whom enter the break on injured reserve with day-to-day designations. If all three are ready to return, the Sharks will need those roster spots to activate them, as they were carrying a full roster before this morning’s moves.
  • The Blues sent forward Zachary Bolduc down to AHL Springfield this morning. It’s just the second time this season he’s been assigned to Springfield, and the first was a one-day demotion before opening night to help St. Louis optimize their LTIR capture. The 21-year-old has 6-12–18 through 46 games and will return to the NHL following the break. In the meantime, the 2021 first-round pick will continue to get reps in Springfield amid a promising sophomore campaign in the majors with good possession numbers.
  • Blackhawks rookie defenseman Ethan Del Mastro is back down with AHL Rockford, Ben Pope of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. The 22-year-old lefty has one assist and 13 hits in six games since being recalled on Jan. 23. His 52.0 CF% at even strength is far above team average and is a promising sign for the 2021 fourth-rounder’s prospects at making the opening night roster next year. The 6’4″, 210-lb active defender has eight assists in 38 showings with Rockford this year, along with a plus-four rating.
  • The Rangers returned goaltender Dylan Garand to AHL Hartford after his services were needed to backup Jonathan Quick in last night’s 4-3 win over the Blue Jackets. The 22-year-old will only be back up after the break if Igor Shesterkin, who missed the game due to an upper-body injury, isn’t cleared to return. The 2020 fourth-rounder is coming off an appearance in the AHL All-Star Classic and has a 2.68 GAA, .913 SV%, three shutouts, and a 12-7-4 record in 23 showings for Hartford.
  • The Utah Hockey Club has assigned Josh Doan to the minor-leagues per Cole Bagley of KSL Sports. This move is likely intended to keep Doan on the ice while the club prepares for their two-week break. Doan has been in the NHL roster routinely since January 10th. He has five points in 15 games in that span, including two in his last two games. He’s been highly impactful even despite modest scoring totals, and should get a chance to continue carving out a role when Utah returns on February 22nd.

Predators Place Mark Jankowski On IR, Recall Ozzy Wiesblatt

The Predators have made a pair of roster moves heading into their final game before the 4 Nations Face-Off break.  Nick Kieser of 102.5 The Game relays (Twitter link) that Nashville has placed center Mark Jankowski on injured reserve.  With the open roster spot, they’ve recalled winger Ozzy Wiesblatt from AHL Milwaukee.

It’s a bit surprising that the Preds wound up waiting this long to put Jankowski on IR.  The 30-year-old has been out for the last three weeks with an upper-body injury that carries a week-to-week designation.  Jankowski has played in 37 games this season, notching three goals and five assists while logging a little under 13 minutes a night.  Having been out this long, he’ll be eligible to be activated at any point when he’s cleared to return.

As for Wiesblatt, this is his second recall of the season.  He got into two games on his first one back in January where he had four hits in a little over ten minutes a night of action.  This one will be shorter-lived, however, as he’ll almost certainly be sent back following the game to keep playing with the Admirals.  On the farm, the 22-year-old has 11 goals and 12 assists in 41 games, already making it the most productive of his three professional seasons.

Predators Reassign Two Players To The AHL

The Nashville Predators announced ahead of their game tonight against Winnipeg that they’ve reassigned forward Ozzy Wiesblatt and defenseman Kevin Gravel to the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League. The news could mean that forward Tommy Novak and defenseman Adam Wilsby are ready to return to the lineup after missing several games due to injury.

Gravel heads back to the AHL after he was recalled yesterday, the Admirals captain has had two recalls this season with his other stint coming from December 12th through December 17th. In three games with Nashville this season, the 32-year-old has a single assist while averaging 18:19 of ice time per game. Down in the AHL, Gravel has a goal and four assists in 25 games with Milwaukee.

Wiesblatt is just a week removed from getting his first NHL call-up, which resulted in him dressing in two games with the Predators. The 22-year-old made his NHL debut on Friday against Vancouver and played again on Saturday night against Calgary. Neither game went particularly well for the former first-round pick as Wiesblatt was held pointless and was dramatically overmatched against NHL competition. Wiesblatt averaged 10:12 of ice time over the two contests and posted four hits with a blocked shot, however, his underlying numbers were ugly as Nashville controlled possession just 20.6% of the time he was on the ice.

As bad as Wiesblatt’s CF% was, it was a small sample size of just two games, and his deployment was complicated as he started just 7.1% of his shifts in the offensive zone.

Predators Recall Spencer Stastney, Ozzy Wiesblatt

The Predators recalled defenseman Spencer Stastney and right-winger Ozzy Wiesblatt from AHL Milwaukee on Thursday, per the AHL’s transactions log (stick taps to Nick Kieser of 102.5 The Game). Nashville had a pair of open roster spots, so no corresponding transaction is necessary.

Stastney, 25 on Saturday, returns to the NHL after suiting up in 20 regular-season and three playoff games for the Preds last season. He wasn’t at this season’s training camp due to personal reasons, though, an absence that stretched until late November.

Upon his return, the Preds sent Stastney to Milwaukee to get back up to game speed. There, the 2018 fifth-round pick has three assists and a +2 rating through 10 games, not quite matching the impact he had last season with 20 points and a +27 rating in only 44 AHL appearances.

In his NHL minutes last season, Stastney showed he could be a capable bottom-pairing presence. He posted a pair of goals and assists with a +9 rating, averaging just south of 16 minutes per game and blocking 29 shots.

Checking in at 6’0″ and 183 lbs, Stastney controlled 51.9% of shot attempts and 59.3% of expected goals when he was on the ice at even strength last year. They’ll be looking for him to do more of the same in a bottom-pairing role while Jeremy Lauzon and Adam Wilsby sit out with injuries.

If Wiesblatt draws into the lineup tomorrow against the Canucks – not a given since Nashville has 12 healthy forwards without him – it would mark his NHL debut. A first-round pick of the Sharks in 2020, the Preds acquired him in exchange for pending RFA Egor Afanasyev in June. Afanasyev opted not to sign with San Jose and head overseas, while Wiesblatt inked a two-year, two-way extension in November in addition to playing out the final season of his entry-level contract this year.

The 22-year-old hasn’t been an offensive factor like the Sharks initially hoped in the minors, and that hasn’t changed much this season. Wiesblatt has been just fine, posting 14 points and 45 PIMs in 27 games for Milwaukee. That 0.52 points per game pace is a career-high in the minors for Wiesblatt, who’s now in his third AHL season.

Neither Stastney nor Wiesblatt will need to clear waivers if they’re sent back down to Milwaukee.

Predators Sign Ozzy Wiesblatt To Two-Year Extension

The Predators have signed forward prospect Ozzy Wiesblatt to a two-year, two-way extension, per general manager Barry Trotz. The deal is worth $775K per season at the NHL level, but his minor-league salary wasn’t disclosed.

It’s a nice bit of organizational security for the 2020 first-round pick of the Sharks, who’s had a peculiar last few months. The 22-year-old winger was in his second season with the Sharks AHL affiliate, the San Jose Barracuda, last year. But after posting underwhelming rookie totals, he still struggled to pop off offensively on one of the AHL’s worst teams. After scoring three goals and 11 points in 34 games and struggling to get much playing time, the Sharks loaned him to Nashville’s affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals, without rescinding his NHL rights.

Wiesblatt finished the season with a goal and five assists in 16 appearances for Milwaukee. He appeared to gain more confidence in postseason play, registering nine points in 15 Calder Cup Playoff games as the Admirals advanced to the Western Conference Final. That showing piqued the Preds’ interest enough to acquire his NHL rights in June, sending the signing rights to forward Egor Afanasyev to the Sharks in return.

Now in the final year of his entry-level contract, the Calgary native has two assists and a +1 rating in six appearances for Milwaukee in 2024-25. He’s still likely a ways away from seeing NHL action, but he’s done enough to secure an extended minor-league audition. He has plenty of runway to continue his development and rediscover the form that led him to churn out 25 goals and 70 points in 64 games in his draft year for WHL Prince Albert, convincing San Jose to select him with the final pick of the first round.

Wiesblatt will be 25 years old when his extension expires in the summer of 2027. He’ll be a restricted free agent with arbitration rights at that time and will have two years of team control left.

Sharks Acquire Egor Afanasyev From Predators

The San Jose Sharks and Nashville Predators have swapped young forwards, with San Jose receiving Egor Afanasyev while Nashville has received Ozzy Wiesblatt (Twitter link). Afanasyev moves west as a pending restricted free agent, while Wiesblatt still has one year remaining on his entry-level contract.

Rather than try and find a new deal with the Predators, Afanasyev will now prepare for new challenge – joining a Sharks team rife with opportunity. Formerly a second-round pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, Afanasyev has spent the last two seasons flirting with NHL ice time, though he’s only managed one goal across 19 games in the NHL. He’s proven much more impactful in the minors, posting 54 points, split evenly, in 57 games this season. The year marked a notable step forward for Afanasyev, taking the leap into strong AHL scoring after just 26 points last season. He’s a burly power forward, who’s taken noticeable strides towards adding agility and finesse since his draft day. Afanasyev also addresses a lack of depth at left-wing for the Sharks, something that could earn him a quick track to the lineup.

The Predators upgrade on their draft capital with this swap, taking in the 31st pick in the 2020 NHL Draft in Wiesblatt. But despite his higher standing than Afanasyev, Wiesblatt hasn’t found nearly the same success since turning pro. He totaled just 17 points in 50 AHL games this season – two points higher than his 15 points last year but still below expectations. Wiesblatt rekindled his scoring a bit during a midseason loan to Nashville’s AHL affiliate, the Milwaukee Admirals, where Wiesblatt scored six points in 16 games. Nashville must have liked what they’ve seen, and will now have full control over Wiesblatt’s development as he looks to vindicate his first-round status.
