Max Guenette

Senators Reassign Max Guenette

January 15, 2025 at 9:04 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Senators loaned defenseman Max Guenette to AHL Belleville on Wednesday, per a team announcement. The club’s active roster is now at 22.

With Ottawa back in action tomorrow against the Capitals, Guenette could be summoned again after delaying the expiry of his temporary waiver exemption by one day. Injured reserve-bound Jacob Bernard-Docker and Travis Hamonic aren’t close to a return, so demoting Guenette leaves them without an extra healthy defenseman.

His presence is primarily contingent on the health of fellow blue-liner Thomas Chabot, who left Tuesday’s shutout win over the Islanders after taking an Adam Pelech shot to the face in the first period. He didn’t return to the contest, and head coach Travis Green said postgame that they would have an update on his status today.

Ottawa recalled Guenette, 23, from Belleville last week after Hamonic landed on IR the day before. He’s purely been up as injury insurance, though, and has been a healthy scratch in five straight since the elevation.

Selected 187th overall in the 2019 draft, Guenette has eight NHL games to his name, all coming with the Sens in the last two campaigns. His recall this month was his first this season after clearing waivers during training camp.

While in Belleville, the defensively responsible Guenette has excelled with nine points and a team-leading +16 rating in 27 games. The 6’2″, 209-lb righty serves as an alternate captain for the AHL club in what’s now his fourth professional season.

Senators Recall Max Guenette

January 7, 2025 at 8:52 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Senators recalled defenseman Max Guenette from AHL Belleville on Tuesday, per a team announcement. The move indicates Jacob Bernard-Docker will be unavailable for tonight’s game against the Red Wings after sustaining a lower-body injury in Monday’s practice. Guenette puts Ottawa one over the active roster limit, so a corresponding transaction, likely an injured reserve placement of some kind, is still coming.

It’s Guenette’s first recall of the season but not the first of his career. The 23-year-old has logged eight appearances for the Sens since the 2022-23 campaign, posting a minus-two rating and eight shots on goal while averaging 13:10 of time on ice per game.

A seventh-round pick by Ottawa in 2019, Guenette has already given the Senators positive value on their selection just by beating the odds to appear in an NHL contest. The Sens have controlled 46.2% of shot attempts with Guenette on the ice at even strength in his limited minutes – not great, but not painting him as a humongous liability, either. He’s a fine replacement-level call-up at this stage of his career with more room still to grow.

Whether he’ll get the chance to show that ceiling on this call-up is uncertain, however. Ottawa also summoned Nikolas Matinpalo from Belleville yesterday, so even with Bernard-Docker out and Travis Hamonic heading to injured reserve, Guenette is likely to sit in the press box for tonight’s game unless another injury strikes.

Guenette, a Quebec native, has nine points and a team-high +16 rating in 27 games for Belleville this season. Emerging as their top shutdown option, Guenette also serves as an alternate captain for the B-Sens in what’s now his fourth season of professional hockey.

In terms of who may land on IR to make room for Guenette’s recall, Bernard-Docker and goaltender Linus Ullmark are the likely options. JBD’s placement will be contingent on the results of his post-injury evaluation, while Ullmark has already missed multiple games with a back strain and could be eligible for activation at any time.

Senators Sign Max Guenette To Two-Way Extension

June 18, 2024 at 10:45 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Senators announced today that they’ve signed defenseman Max Guenette to a one-year, two-way contract extension. The deal carries a $775K cap hit and NHL salary while paying him $120K in the minors next season.

Guenette, 23, is coming off his third season of professional play in the Sens organization, spent almost entirely with AHL Belleville. The 2019 seventh-round pick is on a strong development track, forcing himself into definitive top-four usage over the past few years. He’s been their top offensive option at the minor-league level from the blue line since 2022-23 and led B-Sens defensemen in scoring this season with seven goals, 27 assists and 34 points in 58 games.

While Guenette struggled in AHL postseason action (one assist, -5 rating in seven games), he’s positioned himself as a top recall option and even a dark horse candidate to crack the Sens’ roster out of training camp in the fall if injuries affect a couple of veterans. The Ancienne Lorette, Quebec, native has seen NHL action sparingly the past two years, totaling a -2 rating in eight games while averaging 13:10 per contest. He’s still looking for his first NHL point.

Guenette was headed for restricted free agency this summer after completing his entry-level contract. While he’s no longer entitled to his $55K signing bonus, his new AHL salary is a step up from the $70K he was making last year.

The right-shot defender will be an RFA again when his extension expires in 2025. He becomes the 32nd player signed to a standard player contract with the Sens next season, still far short of the 50-contract limit.

Snapshots: Guenette, Hamonic, Edstrom, St. Ivany, Pleshkov

March 17, 2024 at 11:18 am CDT | by Gabriel Foley Leave a Comment

It’s been a busy St. Patrick’s Day for the transactions log, kicked off by the Ottawa Senators’ assigning of Max Guenette to the minor leagues (Twitter link). Guenette has been with the NHL roster since the first week of March. He’s since appeared in six games with the Senators, going without a point but adding one penalty and a -1. It was Guenette’s first extended stint in the NHL, after playing his second career game in the league in February. He’s still searching for his first NHL point, though he has managed five goals and 29 points in 49 AHL games this season.

Guenette’s assignment is a sign that Travis Hamonic could be nearing a return, says Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun (Twitter Link). Hamonic has been on injured reserve with an undisclosed injury since March 3rd. He previously missed five games ahead of the All-Star Break, bearing with an upper-body injury suffered in late January. He’s played in just 47 of Ottawa’s 65 games this season, recording six points, 40 penalty minutes, and a -9. Even if he is nearing a return, it’s not likely that Hamonic will take on a major role, averaging just below 15 minutes of ice time this season. Still, he adds the experience of an 840-game veteran to the lineup, replacing the rookie Guenette.

Other notes from around the league:

  • The New York Rangers have sent Adam Edstrom back to the AHL (Twitter Link). He was recalled to the NHL on March 15th under emergency conditions, though he hasn’t appeared in a game with the Rangers since March 4th. Edstrom has received the first 11 games of his NHL career this season and has managed two goals, two penalty minutes, and a +2. The 6’7″ bruiser has also added 30 hits, averaging the fourth-most hits on the Rangers lineup, behind William Cuylle, Matt Rempe, and Jacob Trouba.
  • Pittsburgh has also made a roster move, sending down defenseman Jack St. Ivany from his first professional recall, per CapFriendly (Twitter Link). St. Ivany didn’t receive his debut in his first stint in the NHL, serving as a healthy scratch in Pittsburgh’s Saturday afternoon loss to the New York Rangers. He’ll now return to the AHL, where he’s already managed 12 points, 30 penalty minutes, and a +14 in 52 games.
  • Hockey history has been made in Russia’s VHL – the league immediately below the KHL – when SKA-Neva took on AKM. The game went to five overtimes and 21-year-old goaltender Artemi Pleshkov carried a shutout until the very last shot, saving an incredible 124 shots. The 125th shot was too much, though, as Pleshkov and SKA fell 1-0 after 158 minutes of hockey. Pleshkov, who is undrafted in the NHL, has been fantastic this season, recording 12 wins and a .943 save percentage in 23 VHL games this season. He’s also managed a .926 in 10 KHL games, and a .947 in seven playoff games. His amazing game tops Alexander Borodulya’s 107-save performance in the Belarussian Extraliga – the previous record.

Senators Recall Three Players On Emergency Loans

March 9, 2024 at 4:58 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Senators thinned out their roster late yesterday but have since reversed those moves. Forwards Rourke Chartier, Jiri Smejkal, and defenseman Max Guenette are back on the active roster ahead of tonight’s game against the Sharks, per the AHL’s transactions log. All three players were briefly assigned to the Belleville Senators, making them eligible to suit up in the Calder Cup Playoffs. CapFriendly notes today’s moves are emergency loans, not standard recalls.

Chartier, Guenette, and Smejkal are projected to play in San Jose. Three forwards and two defensemen are unavailable due to injuries, and winger Parker Kelly is unavailable after being suspended yesterday night.

Chartier, 27, has settled back in as a capable minor-league scoring center after concussion symptoms nearly forced him out of the sport in 2019 and 2020. His time in the NHL has been less fruitful, though, scoring three goals and adding one assist in 55 games since making his debut with the Sharks in 2018-19. The San Jose 2014 fifth-round pick has played in a career-high 36 games this year with Ottawa, recording three points and a -4 rating while averaging 10:45 per game. Despite his limited offensive production, he has some value in the dot with a 50.9 FO% and a solid 50.2 xG%.

He’ll be in for a more expanded role tonight, sliding into a third-line position with Joshua Norris hurt and Vladimir Tarasenko traded to the Panthers before the deadline. Norris is expected to miss the remainder of the season as he searches for other opinions on his third left shoulder injury in the past few years, so Chartier may get an extended run in increased minutes down the stretch.

If the Senators want to assign him to the minors again this year, they’ll need to place him on waivers if he plays at least eight games and remains on the roster for 27 more days. He’s already played in two games and been rostered for three days after last clearing waivers on Jan. 31.

Smejkal, 27, is in his first professional season in North America after inking a one-year, two-way deal ($870K NHL/$82.5K AHL) in May 2023. However, the Czech power forward hasn’t had much impact in the NHL or AHL and is likely to return to Europe this summer. Skating in 10 games with the Sens, Smejkal has one assist and a -2 rating while averaging a minuscule 9:21 per game. He’s gotten caved in terms of possession quality in his limited minutes, recording a 36.6 xGF%. In Belleville, he has 19 points and a -11 rating in 39 games.

The 22-year-old Guenette carries the most intrigue as a somewhat recent draft pick, taken by the Sens in the seventh round of the 2019 draft. While he’s averaged only 11:56 through his three NHL showings this year, he’ll get a shot in the team’s top four tonight alongside Jakob Chychrun with Thomas Chabot out with a lower-body injury. A pending RFA nearing completion of his entry-level contract, Guenette has had a strong season in the minors with five goals, 29 points and a +4 rating in 49 games.

These recalls are under emergency conditions, so they don’t count toward Ottawa’s four allotted post-deadline recalls.

Senators Recall Max Guenette And Leevi Merilainen

March 2, 2024 at 8:56 am CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Senators have made a pair of roster moves in advance of their game tonight against Philadelphia, announcing (Twitter link) that they’ve recalled defenseman Max Guenette and goaltender Leevi Merilainen from AHL Belleville.

Guenette’s recall is a bit of a surprise since the Sens had all six of their defensemen get through last night’s game without an issue so it appears Guenette is up for injury insurance purposes with Travis Hamonic listed as out week-to-week.  The 22-year-old has made one appearance in Ottawa this season and has spent most of the season in Belleville where he has 29 points in 48 games.

As for Merilainen, it also might seem a bit surprising that a second goalie was recalled.  Joonas Korpisalo was a late scratch on Friday due to illness, resulting in the Sens not dressing a backup goalie until Mads Sogaard arrived.  But with Anton Forsberg being banged up last night and not traveling with the team, another netminder was needed.  Merilainen has split the season between two minor leagues, putting up a .904 SV% in 16 AHL games and a .926 mark in 13 ECHL appearances.

With the two promotions, Ottawa’s roster is now at the maximum of 23 players.  Meanwhile, cap space isn’t an issue for them in the short term following Friday’s placement of Josh Norris on LTIR so they can afford to carry a full-sized roster, a luxury they haven’t had for most of the season.

Ottawa Senators Reassign Max Guénette

February 16, 2024 at 1:49 pm CDT | by Gabriel Foley Leave a Comment

Feb. 16: The Senators returned Guénette to Belleville on Friday, ending his emergency exception. He played 11:53 in last night’s 5-1 loss to Anaheim, recording one shot on goal.

Feb. 15: The Ottawa Senators have recalled defenseman Max Guénette to the NHL lineup. The team does not currently have the cap space for this recall, but played their last game down one player, allowing them to use an emergency recall on Guénette.

This is just the third recall of Guénette’s career, with the last coming in April of last season. Guénette played in his first NHL game on that recall, playing in roughly nine minutes of an overtime loss to the Buffalo Sabres. He went without a point and set a -1, but added one hit, one block, and two shots. Guénette has otherwise spent the last three seasons with the AHL’s Belleville Senators, making his professional debut with the club in the 2021-22 season. He had a quiet AHL rookie season, scoring just 19 points in 48 games, but led all Belleville defensemen with 40 points in 72 games last season. He’s maintained that lead-scoring role into this season, netting 23 points in 41 games.

The Senators originally drafted Guénette in the seventh round of the 2019 NHL Draft. He’s been one of seven players from that round to make their NHL debut, joining Rafael Harvey-Pinard and Dustin Wolf.

Guénette will take over for Artem Zub, who is day-to-day with a lower-body injury. Zub has played in 40 games this season, averaging nearly 21 minutes each game and scoring 18 points. He’s served as Ottawa’s second-most productive defenseman behind Jakob Chychrun.

Ottawa Senators Recall Max Guenette

April 11, 2023 at 9:27 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The average seventh-round pick doesn’t even earn a contract, let alone sniff the NHL. That’s why the performance this season from Max Guenette has been so impressive. The young defenseman has been rewarded for his play with a recall to the Ottawa Senators and a potential NHL debut in the next few days.

Guenette, 21, was the 187th overall pick in 2019, and less than two years into his professional career, is already up with the big club. The right-shot defenseman scored 38 points in 69 games in the AHL, leading all Belleville Senators defensemen.

Ottawa has reassigned Jacob Bernard-Docker to make room on the NHL roster, a move that suggests Guenette will make his debut at some point. When he does, it will mean the entire 2019 Senators draft class will have played at least once in the league.

Lassi Thomson, Shane Pinto, Mads Sogaard—the team’s first three picks that year—all look like significant building blocks. Viktor Lodin and Mark Kastelic, the next two, are organizational depth. The future for Guenette is a little more unclear after his strong performance this season. He’ll get a chance to show he’s more than just a seventh-rounder.
