Anaheim Ducks Looking For Scoring Help

The Anaheim Ducks have been one of the most anemic offenses in the league this season, scoring just 11 times in six games. Perhaps most notable is the complete lack of effectiveness with the man-advantage, where they have been outscored 1-0 on the season thanks to a shorthanded goal by Ryan Hartman of the Minnesota Wild. The fact that they’re 2-2-2 with such poor offensive production could be seen as something of an encouraging sign if they are able to fix what ails them at the dangerous end of the rink.

It comes as no surprise then when Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports in his latest 31 Thoughts column that the Ducks are looking for scoring help. When 31-year-old Carter Rowney—he of 58 career NHL points—is your team scoring leader, there’s reason for upgrade.

Yes, the easy answer may be to recall Trevor Zegras and feed him as many minutes as possible, but the Ducks obviously have a plan for their top forward prospect’s development path. For now, that’s the minor leagues, as he prepares with the San Diego Gulls of the AHL. If you’re another team’s front office that wonders if you could steal Zegras away in exchange for a proven scorer, understand that Friedman also reports that neither he nor Jamie Drysdale were included in Anaheim’s offer for Pierre-Luc Dubois.

Part of the problem is that many of the other young forwards that Anaheim was hoping would take the next step, seemingly haven’t. Max Comtois has three goals in six games (to lead the team), but Sam Steel, Max Jones, Isac Lundestrom, and Troy Terry have all failed to register a single goal through the early part of the season. Even older additions like Danton Heinen and Sonny Milano have been held off the scoresheet in the games they’ve been part of, leading to an almost laughable points chart that includes Rowney and fellow journeyman forward Nicolas Deslauriers at the top.

Where they can find that scoring help isn’t clear. It’s not like teams are just handing out top offensive talents at this point in the season, meaning the Ducks—and the Toronto Maple Leafs, who are also apparently looking for help at forward—may have to dig deep to find a fit. For a team that will have a tough time competing for the Stanley Cup, sacrificing future assets or young players seems like a mistake. Whether the Ducks know they are a rebuilding club—or are willing to act like one—is another question entirely, given it has now been several years since the club had any postseason success. In 2018 the team finished with 101 points and made the playoffs, only to lose four straight games to the San Jose Sharks in the first round. They’ve gone 66-72-21 since then and should perhaps be looking at selling, not buying, even in a shortened season.

Tyler Ennis, Greg Pateryn Clear Waivers

Jan 26: Ennis has cleared waivers according to Chris Johnston of Sportsnet. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic adds that Pateryn also cleared.

Jan 25: The Edmonton Oilers have placed Tyler Ennis on waivers, following another scoreless outing last night in which he played just over six minutes. Ennis has yet to register a point on the season. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet also reports that Greg Pateryn of the Colorado Avalanche has been placed on waivers.

Ennis, 31, signed a one-year deal in the offseason to remain with the Oilers after fitting in quite nicely down the stretch last season. In nine regular season games following a trade from the Ottawa Senators, the undersized forward scored four points. In the postseason he was also effective, scoring two points in three qualification games. This season, however, he’s been pushed further and further down the lineup, playing in just four of the team’s seven games and registering just two shots on goal.

Pateryn meanwhile was only acquired by the Avalanche a few days ago, in a cap-clearing move with the Minnesota Wild. He’s played three games since then, but it’s easy to see why the team has decided to put him on waivers. Not only will his $2.25MM salary likely keep him free from claim, but the team has already gained full confidence in youngster Bowen Byram and because of it have too many defensemen. Moving Pateryn to the taxi squad would save cap space while still allowing him to move into the lineup whenever needed.

While Pateryn may be a tough claim, Ennis could draw some interest from around the league. Already speculation has erupted out of Toronto, where the Maple Leafs are looking for a forward addition. Toronto has an obvious connection to Ennis, having spent the 2018-19 season together, one that rejuvenated his career after multiple injuries. Still, given his salary of $1MM he would be a tougher fit for the cap-strapped Maple Leafs than some of their other $700K forwards.

NHL Suspends John Chayka For Rest Of 2021

Former Arizona Coyotes GM John Chayka has been suspended through the end of 2021 for his actions last summer according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Chayka “engaged in conduct detrimental to the league, breached his obligation to the club and was properly terminated by the club” when he tried to resign after an offer was made by another organization (thought to be the New Jersey Devils’ parent company, which also owns the Philadelphia 76ers and Crystal Palace FC). Craig Morgan of AZ Coyotes Insider reports that the league will not be commenting or releasing any information on the ruling. Darren Dreger of TSN clarifies that the suspension means that Chayka cannot be involved in any NHL business until 2022.

In July, the Coyotes released a statement saying the Chayka had “quit as the General Manager and President of Hockey Operations of the Arizona Coyotes” but the executive blamed a “situation created by ownership.” At the time, Chayka was less than a year removed from a contract extension with the team. Coyotes ownership filed a grievance with the league, which has now been ruled on.

The ugly, public exit came just before the team entered the playoff bubble, where they still managed to defeat the Nashville Predators in the qualification round only to be eliminated by the Colorado Avalanche. The team hired Bill Armstrong as their new GM in September and have made sweeping changes to the front office, particularly in the scouting department that was penalized by the league for prospect testing violations.

Chayka, who is still just 31, will now have to wait out his suspension if he intends on having anything to do with the NHL again.

Toronto Maple Leafs Considering Additions At Forward

The Toronto Maple Leafs lost two-thirds of their top line when Joe Thornton and Auston Matthews were ruled out at the same time earlier this week, and now they might be looking for a little bit of a boost upfront. While Matthews isn’t expected out long with his minor issue, Thornton is out for at least a month with a fractured rib. Add in Nick Robertson’s knee injury from earlier in the month and it didn’t come as much of a surprise when Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Saturday Headlines that the Maple Leafs are looking around for an addition at forward.

It’s not that the Maple Leafs have no depth, as they showed when Adam Brooks stepped into the lineup and scored a powerplay goal against the Edmonton Oilers, but some of the newcomers haven’t been able to contribute much so far. Alexander Barabanov and Wayne Simmonds have both been held entirely scoreless through the first six games while Jimmy Vesey has two goals and no assists. When the Maple Leafs traded away Kasperi Kapanen and Andreas Johnsson to clear cap space in the offseason, they hoped these players could pick up some of the secondary scoring load—so far, they haven’t.

Of course, Toronto is already performing a delicate salary cap dance this season, moving players up and down from the taxi squad whenever they can to try and bank cap space. It resulted in the loss of goaltender Aaron Dell when they were forced to place him on waivers and doesn’t leave a lot of flexibility to make a trade.

The team isn’t going to be shipping out one of their high-priced talents, meaning any improvement would have to come on the margins of the roster at this point. Perhaps one option would be moving a defenseman as high profile KHL signing Mikko Lehtonen and top prospect Rasmus Sandin can’t find their way into the lineup on a regular basis. Still, if they remove any of that depth the same issue could crop up quickly with an injury on the backend.

Ben Hutton Signs With Anaheim Ducks

The Anaheim Ducks have officially signed Ben Hutton to a one-year contract for the rest of the season. The deal is worth $950K according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. It was clear that a deal was coming when Hutton appeared on the COVID Protocol Related Absences list yesterday. It’s not clear when he will be removed from that list so that he’s available to play, but the Ducks have finally announced the deal.

Hutton, 27, was one of the players that felt an offseason squeeze, forced to sign a professional tryout despite a relatively impressive NHL resume. While he likely shouldn’t be deployed on a top pairing, Hutton has nearly 350 games of experience and has averaged just under 20 minutes a night over his five-year career. In 2019-20 he played in 65 games for the Los Angeles Kings and registered 16 points, while putting up strong possession numbers once again.

The Ducks relied heavily on their top two pairs last night to open the season, with Cam Fowler, Kevin Shattenkirk, Josh Manson, and Hampus Lindholm all logging at least 20 minutes. If Hutton can add a little depth to the bottom-pair rotation perhaps they won’t have to put so much responsibility on those top names, at least not every game.

One other thing to remember with Hutton in Anaheim is that he could be another trade deadline piece for them to flip. The one-year, low-money deal will be attractive to contenders partway through the year, especially if he’s able to prove he can still play at a high level.

Leo Komarov, Alex Nedeljkovic Clear Waivers

Jan 13: Both Komarov and Nedeljkovic have cleared waivers and can be assigned to the taxi squad or minor leagues.

Jan 12: The big waiver day was yesterday, with teams putting dozens of players on the wire at the same time to prepare for the upcoming season, But the New York Islanders weren’t done there, as Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that Leo Komarov has been placed on waivers today. After claiming Anton Forsberg from the Edmonton Oilers, the Carolina Hurricanes have also placed Alex Nedeljkovic on waivers.

Komarov, 33, has fallen off a cliff offensively since his early days with the Toronto Maple Leafs but is still a coach’s favorite given his in-your-face playstyle and defensive responsibility. To see him on waivers with the Islanders is something of a surprise, but certainly not much of a risk given his contract that carries a $3MM cap hit through the 2021-22 season. The Islanders are dancing a tight rope with regards to the salary cap and will gain some additional flexibility should Komarov clear. He’ll then be able to be moved at will to the taxi squad, periodically burying part of his cap hit.

Still, it seems likely that the veteran forward will get into the lineup at some point as the Islanders navigate the condensed schedule. A veteran of 457 regular season games, he played in 17 postseason contests with New York last year, scoring three points.

Nedeljkovic’s placement perhaps is even more surprising, given he was seen as the “goaltender of the future” for the Hurricanes relatively recently. The 25-year-old won the AHL Goaltender of the Year award for the 2018-19 season when he and the Charlotte Checkers took home the Calder Cup but did see something of a regression last season when he posted just a .906 save percentage in 29 minor league appearances.

Still, risking him to the rest of the league is certainly not ideal, especially if it was because of their claim of Forsberg today. While he has much more NHL experience, it still seemed as though Nedeljkovic had more upside. That is exactly the kind of reasoning a team may use to claim the young goaltender, though they would then need to carry him on the NHL squad until they can slip him through waivers themselves.

Several Players Claimed Off Waivers

With the sheer number of players on waivers yesterday, you could bet at least a couple would be claimed by teams in need of added depth. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that the Carolina Hurricanes have claimed Anton Forsberg (EDM), the San Jose Sharks have claimed Rudolfs Balcers (OTT), the New Jersey Devils have claimed Eric Comrie (WPG) and the Nashville Predators have claimed Luca Sbisa (WPG). The rest of the 100+ players have all cleared.

Forsberg, 28, returns to the organization he played for last season, an interesting move given the Hurricanes did not re-sign him in the offseason. The veteran goaltender has spent time with the Columbus Blue Jackets and Chicago Blackhawks as well but has been limited to minor league duty for most of the past two years. In 2019-20 he played three games for the Hurricanes, posting an .897 save percentage. In the minor leagues, he had a .905. Forsberg will likely serve as the team’s third goaltender this season but would have to clear waivers in order to go to the taxi squad. Perhaps the team believes they can slip him through in a few days after carrying three goaltenders for the first part of the season.

The Oilers now must find another option for their own taxi squad, though Dylan Wells or Stuart Skinner could fill that role for the time being. Both goaltenders are waiver-exempt, though they were destined to fill the net in the minor leagues this season. The Hurricanes did put Alex Nedeljkovic on waivers today, though with the complicated salary cap dance the Oilers are performing they may not be able to fit him in on the NHL roster at this point.

Balcers, 23, is also rejoining a familiar organization, heading back to the team that drafted him in 2015. The young Latvian forward was part of the Erik Karlsson deal in 2018 and has played 51 games for the Senators over the last two seasons. His name was a surprising one on waivers yesterday, given how well he has played in the minor leagues so far in his short career. Balcers has 115 points in 143 career AHL games, including 56 goals. For a team still just barely turning the corner on a rebuild, it’s hard to watch a young prospect disappear for nothing.

Where he fits into the San Jose lineup isn’t clear at all, but Balcers is worth a claim if you believe that he can still become a regular in the NHL. The Sharks need young talent as badly as anyone.

Comrie becomes the answer in New Jersey, where the Devils suddenly lost Corey Crawford to retirement and needed some depth at the goaltending position. Whether he can actually help them at the NHL level is still to be determined, given the 25-year-old goaltender has just an .868 save percentage in eight career games. Comrie has been an excellent option for the Manitoba Moose however, including posting a .918 save percentage last season after returning to the Jets organization (he was claimed by Arizona, traded to Detroit, and then claimed back by the Jets all in the span of a few months during the 2019-20 season).

Sbisa is an interesting one, given his long history at the NHL level. The 30-year-old defenseman has played in 548 games over a long career, including 44 last season with the Jets. As we wrote last month, the Predators were in dire need of another depth defenseman if only to provide some injury insurance this season and they’ve now found just the player. Sbisa can come in and out for them whenever needed but costs very little with an $800K contract. Still, Jarred Tinordi may end up the casualty here, though it seems likely he would clear waivers if necessary.

Islanders Officially File Contracts For Mat Barzal, Matt Martin, And Andy Greene

After coming to terms on an extension with RFA Mathew Barzal on Saturday and reportedly agreeing to new contracts with UFA’s Matt Martin and Andy Greene months ago, the New York Islanders have now officially filed the three contracts with the league, reports CapFriendly.

The terms of Barzal’s new contract are exactly as reported on Saturday. The three-year bridge deal will result in a $7MM AAV, but with increasing base salaries of a $3MM, $7MM, and $10MM before the skilled center becomes a restricted free agent again after the 2022-23 season.

Martin’s contract is also as previously reported: a four-year deal with a $1.5MM AAV. In fact, Martin will make exactly $1.5MM in base salary in three of those four seasons. However, for the 2020-21 season, Martin will earn a minimum base salary of $700K and an 800K signing bonus. Regardless of the structure, it is a nice contract for the veteran grinder, who will likely retire as an Islander at 35 years old when the deal expires.

The agreement with Greene had not previously been reported, but is what one might expect for a 38-year-old defender entering his 15th NHL season. It is a one-year deal for Greene, who some expected to finish his career last season after the career New Jersey Devil was dealt to the Islanders. Instead, he returns to give the Islanders his best for a full season rather than just a stretch run. Greene will earn a minimum base salary of $700K. However, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reports that he is eligible to earn up to $2MM in performance bonuses.

As CapFriendly notes, these deals set the Islanders up very well to take full advantage of the Long-Term Injured Reserve savings afforded to them by Johnny Boychuk’s “retirement”. New York would like to be as close to $6MM over the salary cap upper limit in order to fully use the subtraction of Boychuk’s cap hit. With these three contracts, they sit at $5.29MM over the cap with room for another minimum contract to be added to final roster.

That minimum contract could very well belong to Cory Schneider. The veteran goaltender has been linked to the Islanders alongside Martin and Greene for some time and has been in camp on a PTO. Although Schneider is only expected to be the club’s No. 3 goalie, likely a taxi squad member used as the emergency backup, he could begin the year on the official roster as that extra $700K man.

NHL Planning Outdoor Games At Lake Tahoe

Jan 11: The NHL has officially announced the games, confirming the dates reported by Friedman earlier this month. The Avalanche and Golden Knights will play in the “Bridgestone NHL Outdoors Saturday” while the Bruins and Flyers will play in the “Honda NHL Outdoors Sunday.”

Jan 1: On February 20, the NHL is going to Lake Tahoe. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet was first to report this morning that the league plans on hosting two outdoor games at the Edgewood Tahoe Resort next month with no fans. The Colorado Avalanche and Vegas Golden Knights will play on February 20, while the Philadelphia Flyers and Boston Bruins battle the following day.

Previous reports had the league searching for an outdoor location like this, with Lake Louise, Alberta, and Park City, Utah two that Friedman mentions in today’s piece. While those locations ultimately proved impossible, the league is still getting its outdoor games.

These matches will do something to replace the usual outdoor games that have been canceled for this season. The Winter Classic (originally scheduled for today) and Stadium Series matches were nixed for this season, with Minneapolis and Raleigh expected to host events in the future. Those were obviously supposed to draw huge crowds and drive revenue for the host clubs, something that the Lake Tahoe event isn’t designed for. Instead, it will be a more intimate performance on the golf course, with Friedman reporting that only around 400 people will be involved.

Florida Panthers Claim Noah Juulsen

The Florida Panthers have claimed Noah Juulsen off waivers from the Montreal Canadiens according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, adding the young defenseman just before the season begins.

Juulsen, 23, is the second young defenseman the Panthers have claimed off waivers in recent days, following the acquisition of Gustav Forsling over the weekend. Adding those two to a group that already had a lot of offseason turnover is interesting, especially when paired with Keith Yandle’s recent demotion. Yandle has practiced away from the main roster group for the past two days, spending time with the likely scratches and minor leaguers instead as other players are given a chance to compete.

It’s not clear at all now how things will shake out in Florida, but Juulsen is likely just pleased he’ll get a fresh start somewhere else. The 2015 first-round pick has had nothing but trouble with the Montreal Canadiens, suffering injury after injury at both the NHL and AHL levels. In fact, since arriving in the professional ranks in 2017 he has suited up for just 93 games combined, including just 37 over the past two seasons.

Healthy now and ready to contribute, it will be interesting to see how he will be deployed in Florida. To be placed on their taxi squad he would have to be placed on waivers again, at which point Montreal would have a chance to bring him back. That means a roster spot seems likely, but with such little game experience, it’s hard to imagine him stepping right into the opening night lineup.
