Calgary Flames Activate Dennis Gilbert
Dec 28: It appears the Flames have activated Gilbert off of IR this evening, per CapFriendly. A closer look at the Flames’ roster page shows Gilbert listed on the roster among the other healthy players.
Dec 21: DeSimone could be staying on the Flames roster for a few days, at least. Calgary today converted his emergency call-up into a full-time one, per CapFriendly.
Dec 20: The Calgary Flames have lost Dennis Gilbert for at least a week, as the defenseman was placed on injured reserve today after leaving Sunday’s game early. Nick DeSimone was elevated from the AHL to take his place on the roster.
Gilbert left the game after a fight with Jonah Gadjovich of the San Jose Sharks just nine shifts into his night. It’s tough timing for a player who was only recalled that day and was playing in his eighth game of the season.
His cap hit now will stay on the books for Calgary, a tough break for a team that needs every dollar. The team could have sent him back down and buried his entire $750K contract otherwise.
DeSimone, another minor league veteran, will potentially get the chance to suit up against his old organization, should he enter the lineup tonight in a rematch against the Sharks. The undrafted defenseman spent parts of five seasons with the San Jose Barracuda, wearing an “A” as an alternate captain in the last two.
In four games this season with the Flames, he has yet to register a point.
Calgary Flames Place Chris Tanev On IR, Recall Dennis Gilbert
1:52 pm: Per Flames Nation’s Ryan Pike, Calgary has placed Tanev on IR, likely retroactive to December 12th, when he was injured. Essentially, the move will create a roster spot for Gilbert in advance of today’s game, while allowing Tanev to return by Tuesday for the second half of a back to back in San Jose. It’s not clear if Tanev will return on Tuesday or not, however the defenseman was skating earlier today.
The Flames have since confirmed Tanev’s placement on IR.
1:22 pm: Gilbert’s recall seemed to imply that another player would be missing for the Flames in San Jose, and the team has confirmed just that. Forward Radim Zohorna did not participate in the morning skate as he’s dealing with a non-COVID illness, per a team announcement. According to Postmedia’s Wes Gilbertson, Gilbert is already with the team in San Jose.
12:37 pm: With the NHL’s roster freeze set to take effect tomorrow night at midnight, we can expect plenty of roster shuffling in the time being, and that’s already been evident this morning. Adding to the pool of transactions are the Calgary Flames, who announced they’ve recalled defenseman Dennis Gilbert from the AHL’s Calgary Wranglers, their affiliate. No corresponding move has been announced.
Gilbert’s recall would seem to put the Flames above the maximum roster limit, however it could be an indicator that fellow defenseman Chris Tanev is going to be placed on IR after blocking a shot up high on Monday against the Montreal Canadiens. Tanev left that game early an hasn’t played since. Still, nothing on that end has been announced just yet.
Gilbert, 26, has seen more than his share of recalls and reassignments this season, last sent to the AHL back on November 27th. The shuffling has seemed to cost Gilbert some games, but he has been fairly effective in his role as a defense-first defenseman despite it. Through seven NHL games this season, Gilbert has one point, a goal, and through 15 AHL games, he has just one point as well, that one an assist.
The Flames will play this evening on the road in San Jose against the Sharks.
Calgary Flames Assign Dennis Gilbert
Nov 27: After some additional time on the active roster, Gilbert is heading back to the AHL. The team announced Sunday morning that he’d been assigned back to the Wranglers.
Nov 15: Gilbert has been recalled again, with DeSimone heading back to the AHL in his place.
Nov 13: Earlier this afternoon, the Calgary Flames announced that defenseman Dennis Gilbert has been assigned to the Calgary Wranglers, their AHL affiliate. No corresponding move was announced. After sending Gilbert down, Calgary has seven defenseman on their roster, allowing them to maintain a bit of cap flexibility for a few days before their next road game on Thursday.
Gilbert had been recalled back on November 6th along with fellow defenseman Nick DeSimone in the wake of Michael Stone‘s injury and subsequent placement on IR. With three left-handed defenseman already on the Flames roster, including Noah Hanifin, Nikita Zadorov, and Connor Mackey, as well as just $63K in cap space available prior to the assignment, the Flames were able to part with their 23rd player for the time being, playing just one home game tomorrow evening before their road trip.
Gilbert, 26, has been no stranger to the NHL/AHL shuffle throughout his five-year career, already splitting games between both the Flames and Wranglers in 2022-23. The defenseman has yet to tally a point through 10 games this season, eight of which have come in the AHL. However, his pair of NHL games this week did mark his first since he appeared in three games as a member of the Colorado Avalanche back in 2020-21.
