New York Rangers To Interview Gerard Gallant

After firing head coach David Quinn on Wednesday, the New York Rangers and new GM Chris Drury are wasting no time in their search for a replacement. TSN’s Darren Dreger reports that the club has already received permission to interview one of the biggest names on the coaching market. Gerard Gallant will get the first crack at interviewing for the head coach vacancy in the Big Apple.

The Vegas Golden Knights have approved of the interview, having fired Gallant from his role as head coach last January with term on his contract – to much surprise. The former Columbus Blue Jackets and Florida Panthers bench boss is a Jack Adams Award recipient with a .550 points percentage in his nine years as a head coach. He took the expansion Knights to the Stanley Cup Final in their inaugural season and then back to the playoffs the following year. Gallant has never made it through three years with any of his clubs, but has nevertheless established himself as an a valued name in the NHL coaching world. If Gallant doesn’t land the New York job, he will surely have interest elsewhere, particularly from the newest expansion team in the Seattle Kraken.

The timing of this interview does have some reasoning behind it. While Gallant may indeed be the Rangers’ top candidate, the rush to interview him has more to do with his upcoming plans. Gallant is getting ready to coach Team Canada at the World Championships, which begin on May 21. Gallant will actually depart for Riga, Latvia this weekend, according to Dreger, so the Rangers wanted to touch base with him before he left and his focus was elsewhere. Of course, Drury will be very keyed into the World Championships himself as the GM of Team USA. A strong outing for Gallant leading a Canadian roster that won’t have the typical amount of talent against Drury’s American squad could be what pushes Gallant to the top of the Rangers’ shortlist to be their next head coach.

USA Hockey Announces World Championship Roster

The IIHF World Championship roster is always a little different. Because the tournament takes place during the NHL playoffs, many players are unable to attend. Many others choose not to participate because of injuries they sustained during the season, meaning there are often some interesting choices that compete for their country.

This season is perhaps even more difficult for U.S. Men’s National Team general manager Chris Drury. Not only does he have injuries and the postseason to deal with, but many players haven’t seen their families for months and just want to spend some quality time at home. With that in mind, this year’s team has both players not yet drafted and others that have already aged out of the NHL.

New York Rangers Fire David Quinn

The New York Rangers have a new president and GM in Chris Drury, and he’ll get to handpick his next coach. The team has fired David Quinn and most of his assistants, opening the role up for a new coaching search that will begin immediately.

Quinn, 54, was only behind the bench for three seasons with the Rangers and had two years left on his contract. The team will still have to honor that but will go in a different direction after missing the playoffs once again. David Oliver, Greg Brown, and Jacques Martin were also relieved of their duties, with only goaltending coach Benoit Allaire avoiding the culling.

Drury, who was installed as the new front office head after a shocking firing spree earlier his month, will now have to find the team to lead his new vision of the team. There are certainly several qualified candidates on the market, with Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet noting just yesterday that Mike Babcock, John Tortorella, Bruce Boudreau, Gerard Gallant, Claude Julien, and others are available. Rick Tocchet also recently parted ways with the Arizona Coyotes and is expected to be taking interviews today, while others like Travis Green in Vancouver are still without contract extensions for next season.

The Rangers finished 11 points behind the New York Islanders for the final East Division playoff position, but would have made the postseason in two of the other divisions with their 27-23-6 record. Many believe this season was actually a strong step forward for the group, but chairman James Dolan didn’t agree, firing president John Davidson and GM Jeff Gorton earlier this month. Dolan explained at the time the move was made so that Drury could be in place for the exit interviews, which have obviously led to him going in a different direction behind the bench.

Under Quinn, the Rangers were 96-87-25 overall but failed to qualify for the playoffs. In last year’s bubble, they lost all three games in the qualification round.

Management Notes: McNab, Hardy, Drury

One of the longest-tenured executives in the league has decided to retire, as David McNab will leave the Anaheim Ducks after 28 years. McNab served as the Ducks’ Senior VP of Hockey Operations and had been with the club since its inception in 1993. Between 1994 and 2008 he was the team’s assistant GM and was previously responsible for the team’s scouting and draft choices. McNab worked for the Washington Capitals, Hartford Whalers, and New York Rangers before joining Anaheim.

Some older fans may recognize the McNab name; David’s brother Peter McNab was a dynamic scorer for the Boston Bruins during a 954-game NHL career, while his father Max McNab won the Stanley Cup as a center for the Detroit Red Wings in 1950 and went on to serve as general manager of the Capitals and New Jersey Devils.

  • As one executive leaves the NHL, another may be entering. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that Ryan Hardy is expected to be hired by an NHL team soon, writing that a number of teams are “circling him” but noting the connection to Toronto Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas in particular. Hardy, 35, has served as general manager for the powerhouse Chicago Steel of the USHL and previously operated as the director of player personnel for the U.S. National Team Development Program. Hardy was also employed as an amateur scout by the Boston Bruins at one point.
  • Of course, the New York Rangers also have a front office to restructure now that Chris Drury has been put in charge. Friedman writes that there is a “lot of interest in working for him” at this point, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise. Drury has deep ties with USA Hockey and has been a GM-in-waiting for several years. Drury had been serving as associate GM of the Rangers and GM of the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack, likely both roles that will now need to be filled.

New York Rangers Extend Ryan Lindgren

After just a few days on the job, New York Rangers GM Chris Drury has completed his first big move. The team has signed Ryan Lindgren to a three-year contract extension. Lindgren was set to become a restricted free agent this summer. Chris Johnston of Sportsnet tweets the full breakdown:

  • 2021-22: $2MM salary
  • 2022-23: $3MM salary
  • 2023-24: $4MM salary

Earlier today, the Rangers named Lindgren this year’s winner of their Players’ Player Award, which is awarded “to the Ranger who, as selected by his teammates, best exemplifies what it means to be a team player.”

Originally selected by the Boston Bruins in 2016, Lindgren was one of the pieces the Rangers received in the 2018 Rick Nash deal. He played in 51 games this season, often pairing with Norris Trophy candidate Adam Fox, and recorded 16 points. While Lindgren didn’t receive any powerplay time, he did trail only Fox in shorthanded ice time this season, averaging 2:30 on the penalty kill every night.

That kind of defensive presence is valuable and obviously worth it to the Rangers as they move forward with new management. The 23-year-old Lindgren would not have been eligible for salary arbitration, but won’t even need to enter into any free agent negotiations.

Importantly, he will still be an RFA at the deal’s expiry, leaving the Rangers with a bit of team control down the road. If his development continues, by the time he’s 26 he’ll be looking for a much more expensive long-term deal. For now, he comes in as the team’s third-highest-paid defender for next season, though Anthony DeAngelo’s final year is expected to be bought out this offseason. The team has one more year of Fox on his entry-level deal, one of the most valuable contracts in the league right now.

Jack Capuano Named Team USA Head Coach

The IIHF World Championship will begin in less than two weeks and the U.S. team now has a head coach. National team GM Chris Drury announced today that Jack Capuano will lead the squad, with Nate Leaman and Adam Nightingale serving as assistants. Kevin Reiter will be the goaltending coach and Mike King the video coach for the event, which opens May 21 in Riga, Latvia.

Drury released a short statement:

We’re extremely fortunate to have an outstanding coaching staff, led by Jack Capuano. Their involvement with USA Hockey in various ways over the course of time and combined international experience will be of great benefit as we head into the tournament.

The choice of coach had a little more intrigued tied to it this year because Drury was only just named the president and GM of the New York Rangers. Current Rangers head coach David Quinn has two years left on his contract, but there has been a near-constant call for his firing by many fans as the team missed the playoffs this season. It’s not clear if Drury would consider any of the names announced today, but it does give them another chance to work closely together.

Capuano, 54, has been working as an associate coach with the Ottawa Senators the last two seasons and has experience with Team USA from the 2017 World Championship and World Cup. He served as head coach with the New York Islanders for several seasons between 2011-2016 but has yet to get another chance to lead at that level. The tournament will serve as a nice resume point for Capuano.

Leaman meanwhile is one of the most intriguing coaching prospects in the game right now, serving as head coach at Providence College the last decade and taking the U.S. World Juniors to gold this year. If he ever wanted to leave college hockey there is no doubt a job would be waiting for him at the NHL level, but to this point he has no experience at that level.

New York Rangers Fire John Davidson, Jeff Gorton

4:35pm: The Rangers have made it official, announcing that Davidson and Gorton are “leaving the organization” effective immediately. Drury has taken over as president and general manager, while senior advisor Glen Sather will help him during the transition. Dolan has released a statement:

We want to thank JD and Jeff for their contributions to the organization. They are both great hockey professionals who worked hard for the Rangers, however, in order for the team to succeed in the manner our fans deserve, there needs to be a change in leadership. Chris is a very sought-after executive and a strong leader, who has proven himself to be one of the top young minds in hockey. We are confident he will effectively guide the team to ensure the long-term success we promised Rangers fans.

1:50pm: In a stunning development, the New York Rangers have fired team president John Davidson and general manager Jeff Gorton, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. This comes less than 24 hours after the team issued a harsh statement critiquing the league and Department of Player Safety head George Parros. Frank Seravalli of TSN reports that the two men “scurried to distance themselves” from the statement, telling other executives that they did not know it was in the works until after it was released. Larry Brooks of the New York Post tweets that associate GM Chris Drury will remain with the organization in a prominent role and Friedman reports that it will be as president and GM.

Darren Dreger of TSN has been told that the firings are not related to the statement and Friedman adds that James Dolan, the team owner, was unhappy with the team this season and wanted a change. Dolan was also behind the statement, reports Friedman.

While the Rangers are going to miss the playoffs again this season, the rebuild is going pretty much exactly as planned. Three years ago, the team issued a letter to fans telling them that they would be trading franchise icons in order to amass a new young core to put them back in contention for the Stanley Cup. Names like Ryan McDonagh, Mats Zuccarello, Rick Nash, J.T. Miller, Kevin Hayes, Brady Skjei, and Marc Staal were all shown the door, while Gorton and his staff compiled prospects and picks to build for the future. The team went out and signed Artemi Panarin to a huge contract in free agency to move things along and even took part in the postseason last year, losing to a much more experienced Carolina Hurricanes team in the qualification round.

This season they will miss the playoffs thanks to a brutal East Division, sitting ten points behind the New York Islanders but holding a 26-21-6 record. The Rangers would hold a playoff position in two of the other divisions with the same record and have the 13th-best goal differential in the NHL.

Apparently, that rebuild has not gone the way ownership envisioned. Davidson and Gorton are out, adding two respected and experienced executives to the market for teams to go after this summer. It was less than two years ago when Davidson resigned his role with the Columbus Blue Jackets to take a similar job with the Rangers, noting that it was a homecoming of sorts for the former player and broadcaster. That homecoming is now over, but it seems very unlikely that Davidson is without work for long if he wants to continue in an NHL front office.

Of course, even though they are moving on from two experienced executives, the Rangers have a ready-made replacement in Drury. An Olympic medalist as a player, Drury has been one of the most sought-after young managers in the league the last several years but has continued to commit himself to the Rangers whenever a new opportunity presented itself. He joined the team as its director of player development in 2015 and has worked his way up the ranks, also serving as GM for Team USA at the World Championships. There’s no doubting Drury’s ability in the role, though his appointment does come suddenly and with plenty of surprise.

Chris Drury Named GM Of 2021 U.S. Men’s National Team

After removing his name from consideration in the Pittsburgh Penguins general manager search, Chris Drury is getting the title somewhere else. USA Hockey has announced that Drury will return as GM of the Men’s National Team, choosing and managing the squad that will take part in the 2021 IIHF Men’s World Championship later this year. The event is set to take place between May 21 and June 6 in Riga, Latvia.

Drury, who also recently received a promotion with the New York Rangers to associate GM, has served in the same role with USA Hockey for the last two years, though the 2020 tournament was canceled. This year, he will be joined by an advisory group that includes John Vanbiesbrouck, David Poile, Don Waddell, Stan Bowman, Jeff Gorton, Lou Lamoriello, Bill Guerin, Tom Fitzgerald, Bill Zito, and Kevyn Adams, a veritable who’s-who of American-born NHL executives. Vanbiesbrouck, who is the assistant executive director for USA Hockey, released this statement:

It’s great to have Chris back as the general manager of our men’s national team. He’s transitioned from his days as a player and emerged as one of the bright young stars on the management side of the game. Together with our Men’s National Team Advisory Group, we’re very fortunate to have an experienced and passionate group involved to help us put together a team that will compete for a gold medal.

The continued selection of Drury is another signal that he is one of the most respected up-and-coming executives in the game and will likely be given the reins to an NHL franchise eventually. For now, he told the Penguins that he was happy with his role in New York (receiving a promotion just days after withdrawing his name from consideration).

Like every year, the team that Drury will be able to put together for the World Championship is dependant on the outcome of the NHL regular season and playoffs. The schedule currently has the regular season ending in early May, meaning players that don’t make the postseason could be eligible to travel (and quarantine) to the tournament in time. Usually, those that are eliminated in the first round also join the event, but that may be more difficult with health restrictions this time around. It will be interesting to see if Drury embraces the youth movement that Hockey Canada spoke about recently, or if they will bring along a more veteran lineup.

Chris Drury Promoted To Associate General Manager

The New York Rangers have given Chris Drury a shiny new title, promoting him from assistant general manager to associate general manager. He will remain general manager of the AHL’s Hartford Wolf Pack. The team explains that in his role, Drury will “continue to assist Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton on all player transactions and contract negotiations.”

Drury had recently been linked to the Pittsburgh Penguins GM search, before suddenly removing himself from contention earlier this week. In all likelihood, this promotion is the reason why.

For the Rangers, losing a promising young executive like Drury to a rival like Pittsburgh would have been unwise. The 44-year-old Drury was not only a star player in the NHL, with a Stanley Cup championship and two Olympic medals, but he was a Rangers captain and has been a rising star since joining the management side. In 2019 he was even tapped by USA Hockey to GM the World Championship squad and was set to have the same role in 2020 before the tournament was canceled.

At some point down the line, Drury will become a GM in the NHL. It will be interesting to see whether that is in New York at some point, with Gorton either departing or moving into a different role. They won’t be able to keep Drury around forever if he truly wants control of a franchise.

Latest On Pittsburgh GM Search

Feb 3: Though Drury was a top candidate and the team asked for permission, he will not be getting an interview. Bob McKenzie of TSN reports that Drury has informed the Penguins he is not interested in leaving New York City or the Rangers at this time. That’s a pretty high profile snub, but Drury and the Rangers have been very loyal to each other over the last several years and it shouldn’t come as a total shock that he wants to stay with the organization at this time.

Feb 2: The Pittsburgh Penguins have started the interview process for their next general manager after Jim Rutherford’s sudden resignation last week, but the candidate list is still a long one according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. The insider reports that the New Jersey Devils are not going to let Tom Fitzgerald—who is currently their GM but only signed to that position through this season—interview, but Frank Seravalli of TSN tweets that the New York Rangers and Boston Bruins have granted permission to interview Chris Drury and John Ferguson Jr., respectively.

Drury, the assistant general manager of the Rangers, has been on the GM track for several years and is a top candidate for basically every job that opens. An NCAA champion, Stanley Cup winner, and two-time Olympic silver medalist as a player, Drury made a quick climb through the executive ranks and was named GM of Team USA at the 2019 World Championship. He’ll be a GM somewhere, though up until now the Rangers had been keeping him away from other opportunities.

Ferguson Jr. is another story, though his inclusion shouldn’t be scoffed at just because of his previous failures. The veteran front office member took over as GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 2003 and found little success, but has been climbing back up the ranks and building his reputation since his firing in 2008. He has worked as Boston director of player personnel since 2014 and as GM of the Providence Bruins since 2016, with his name often coming up in connection with openings around the league.

Friedman offers up another couple of names that hadn’t been mentioned before: Joe Nieuwendyk and Jason Karmanos. The former was the GM of the Dallas Stars between 2009-2013 but has been behind the scenes in recent years. The latter is kind of a shocking inclusion, given he was fired from his role as AGM with the Penguins in October.

Even though the list of candidates is long, the Penguins are expected to try and hurry along with a decision in order to have a GM in place as soon as possible. Currently, the team is being run by interim GM Patrik Allvin, with help from owner Mario Lemieux.

TSN’s Frank Seravalli has confirmed another NHL executive on the Penguins’ shortlist later in the evening: Colorado Avalanche Assistant GM Chris MacFarland. The Avs have given Pittsburgh permission to interview MacFarland, who joins Drury and Ferguson as confirmed candidates. Seravalli adds that this process could move quicker than some may have expected. He notes that the Penguins have received interest in the vacancy from upwards of 20 legitimate names and hope to have their list of six or seven candidates whittled down by the end of the week. He goes so far as to say that the team hopes to have hired their new GM within the next two weeks.
