Evening Notes: Perunovich, Condors, Savoie

St. Louis Blues defenseman Scott Perunovich seems set up for a make-or-break season after spending the first three years of his pro career dealing with what seemed like neverending injuries. Forced absences have held Perunovich to just 73 appearances, and 23 assists through his entry-level contract. But despite what’s seemed like years of bad luck in St. Louis, Perunovich shared with Jeremy Rutherford of The Athletic that he wouldn’t want to play anywhere else. He said, “I want to succeed in the league, but the team I want to succeed with the most is St. Louis… They drafted me. Every other team looked over me and they’ve always had confidence in me. This is where I want to succeed, and I’ve never not thought that for a second.”

Perunovich explained how he’s changing his approach after a hardy year with the Blues lineup, adding that he’s hoping to think less and shoot more. Those certainly seem like timely changes as Perunovich approaches his 75th NHL game, still searching for his first career goal. And while goal-scoring has never been Perunovich’s forte, he did flash much more offensive upside in college, where he seemed much more confident in skating the puck across the red line and joining the offensive rush. He’s been much more pass-first at the professional level, though he’s improved his poise in sitting with the puck and waiting for opportunities to open up.

A strong start to the year could quickly earn Perunovich top-pair minutes, with Torey Krug facing injury and little competition coming from Nick Leddy or Pierre-Olivier Joseph. That could give Perunovich the groundwork for a breakout season, though he’ll need to first win out the battle for ice time.

Other notes from around the hockey world:

  • The AHL’s Bakersfield Condors have hired Adam Krug as an assistant coach and Kelly Guard as a goaltending coach. Krug has spent the last decade coaching the NCAA D-III Men’s team at Adrian College, having previously captained Adrian during two seasons of his own playing career. Krug took the team to unprecedented heights, including their first D-III championship in 2022 and a second-place finish in 2023. Adrian has developed into a powerhouse of D-III hockey and a major supporter of collegiate club hockey as a whole, with their ACHA D-II team winning a championship in 2021 and also finishing second in 2023. Meanwhile, Kelly Guard moves to Bakersfield after spending 12 years as the goalie coach of the WHL’s Prince Albert Raiders. He’s overseen some impressive goalie seasons in that span – including Ian Scott’s .932 save percentage in 49 games of the 2018-19 season. He’ll look to carry that momentum into the pro level while Krug adjusts to a big jump in competition as Bakersfield makes two interesting, potentially high-impact hires.
  • Former Oilers forward prospect Carter Savoie is heading overseas on a one-year contract with Liiga’s TPS, per a team announcement. Savoie, 22, didn’t receive a qualifying offer from Edmonton upon the expiration of his entry-level contract last month. The older brother of new Oilers prospect Matthew Savoie, whom they acquired via trade from the Sabres after non-tendering Carter, recorded 18 goals and 33 points in 109 games with AHL Bakersfield in parts of the last three seasons but never received an NHL call-up. Edmonton selected him 100th overall in the 2020 draft.

Edmonton Oilers Activate Carter Savoie, Send Him To AHL

The Edmonton Oilers have announced that forward Carter Savoie has been activated off of the team’s injured non-roster list and been loaned to their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.

Savoie, 20, has been out with a lower-body injury that has kept him from making his 2022-23 season debut. With this move, he’ll now head to Bakersfield to continue his young professional career.

One of the Oilers’ top prospects, Savoie turned pro late last season after an extremely successful collegiate career at the University of Denver. At Denver, Savoie was a star sophomore player, scoring 23 goals and 45 points, leading the Pioneers to the NCAA Men’s Ice Hockey National Championship.

A fourth-round pick at the 2020 draft, Savoie’s college success has led to his fast rise in prospect rankings. The Condors are currently 2-2-1 and will certainly stand to benefit should Savoie’s scoring numbers translate from the NCAA level to the pro level.

While he might not be seen in Edmonton anytime soon with the Oilers 5-3-0 and free to be patient with Savoie’s development, the hope will surely be for him to eventually make his way to a scoring line on the big club. For now, though, he’ll continue his development in the AHL, a process that can now continue with his recovery from injury.

Preseason Notes: Jarry, Oilers Injuries, Senators Cuts

Tristan Jarry was in a bad spot after the 2020-21 season. His mistakes at crucial moments heavily contributed to the Penguins’ season-ending first-round loss to the New York Islanders, and there was speculation that offseason on whether the Penguins would go in a new direction in their crease. But last year Jarry issued a powerful response to those doubters, going 34-18-6 with a .919 save percentage in 58 games played. Jarry looked every bit like an elite goalie and ranked just outside the top five goalies in save percentage and goals-against-average.

While we didn’t get a chance to see Jarry play extended time in the Penguins’ playoff games, that hasn’t kept the Penguins from firmly believing in Jarry as their long-term solution in net. Jarry is set to be an unrestricted free agent next summer, though, so his contract status could possibly keep him from being a Penguin long-term. That being said, the Penguins are likely to make every effort to keep him in Pittsburgh. Speaking to the media today, GM Ron Hextall said (as relayed by Matt Vensel of the Pittsburgh Post-Tribune) that the team had begun extension talks with Jarry and is fully invested in retaining him. For a team that is intent on remaining competitive for the rest of Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, and Kris Letang’s careers, it’s easy to see why they’d want to get a Jarry extension done as soon as possible.

Now, for some other notes from across the NHL:

  • Edmonton Oilers head coach Jay Woodcroft issued a few injury updates today. Per Woodcroft, as covered by The Athletic’s Daniel Nugent-Bowman, defenseman Vincent Desharnais sustained a “minor injury,” winger Carter Savoie was injured during the team’s prospect tournament and is “out long-term,” and prospect forward Raphael Lavoie “won’t participate” in training camp after finishing last season injured. These updates do have implications for the Oilers’ roster, as Desharnais was expected to compete for a depth role on the team’s blueline, and Lavoie was seemingly entering a do-or-die training camp battle to impress Oilers brass after two straight up-and-down seasons at the AHL level.
  • The Ottawa Senators announced three cuts from their training camp today, sending prospects Chandler Romeo, Reid Valade, and Dalyn Wakely to their OHL clubs. Romeo, 19, was a seventh-round pick of the Senators at the 2021 draft while Valade and Wakely have each not been drafted. All three were not expected to play significant roles at training camp or in the preseason.

Oilers Sign Carter Savoie

After signing him to an AHL tryout deal last month to allow him to finish off the year with AHL Bakersfield, it was only a matter of time before the Oilers worked out an entry-level contract with prospect winger Carter Savoie.  As CapFriendly reports (Twitter link), that has now happened as the team has agreed to a three-year deal that begins this season.  The pact carries a $925K AAV and does not contain any signing bonuses.

The 20-year-old was a fourth-round pick of Edmonton back in 2020 (100th overall) and it’s safe to say that he has outperformed that selection since then.  Savoie was quite productive in his sophomore season with the University of Denver, finishing second on the Pioneers in scoring with 23 goals and 22 assists in just 39 games.  After they won a national title, he decided to forego his remaining college eligibility and turned pro, getting into two games during the regular season but has yet to suit up in the playoffs.

Savoie has worked his way into being one of Edmonton’s more promising prospects over the last couple of years and while the Oilers will need some low-cost players to round out their roster next season, it’s unlikely that he will be able to make the jump right away on a full-time basis although the decision to start the deal this season makes him eligible to play in the playoffs now.  Savoie has played in just a total of 65 games combined over the last two years so he’ll almost certainly need some time to adjust to the rigors of a full professional campaign.  But if he continues to build on his performance this season, he’ll be worth waiting for.

Carter Savoie Signs AHL ATO

After just two years at the college level, Carter Savoie has decided to turn pro. The Edmonton Oilers prospect has signed an amateur tryout with the Bakersfield Condors for the rest of the 2021-22 season, allowing him to play AHL games down the stretch. Had he signed an entry-level deal with the Oilers for this season, he would not have been eligible to be assigned to the minor leagues. Instead, his ELC will likely follow for 2022-23.

Savoie, 20, is fresh off a national championship with the University of Denver, where he quickly turned himself from a fourth-round afterthought to a legitimate NHL prospect. At times considered just “the older brother” of Matthew Savoie, a top prospect for the 2022 draft, Carter quickly showed he should also be considered a future NHL option. In 39 games for DU this season, he scored 23 goals and 45 points, earning a Hobey Baker nomination and now a chance to hit the professional ranks.

It’s not like offensive success is anything new for the young forward. In his final year in the AJHL, a junior league that allowed him to maintain his NCAA eligibility, Savoie racked up 53 goals and 99 points in just 54 games for the Sherwood Park Crusaders. Even as a freshman at Denver he scored 13 times in 24 games, showing off his uncanny ability to arrive in the right spot at the right time in order to finish plays.

For an organization that has had so much trouble developing mid-round picks over the last decade-plus, Savoie looks like something of an anomaly in the Oilers’ system. He’ll now face his biggest test to date, transitioning to the AHL level where his size–he stands just 5’9″–still could be an obstacle.
