Sharks Re-Sign Brandon Coe To Two-Way Deal

July 15, 2024 at 2:50 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Sharks have re-signed right winger Brandon Coe to a one-year, two-way deal, according to a team release. Financial terms weren’t disclosed.

Coe, 22, was a fourth-round pick of San Jose in 2020 and was an RFA after completing his entry-level contract. He’s yet to make his NHL debut.

The 6’4″ winger had a quite unusual development path. Selected out of the OHL’s North Bay Battalion, he didn’t have a place to play in his post-draft season after the league paused operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic. That led to Coe making his professional debut ahead of schedule, recording five points in 17 games for AHL San Jose on a tryout as a teenager in the 2020-21 campaign.

Coe returned to North Bay for his final season of junior hockey the following year, exploding for 101 points in 62 games and earning a spot on the OHL’s First All-Star Team. He’s since served in a depth role for AHL San Jose since returning to the professional ranks in 2022, now totaling 18 goals and 38 points in 130 career games for the Baby Sharks. He set career highs with 12 goals and 17 points in 57 contests last season.

He isn’t close to seeing NHL ice, but he has shown slow yet steady development. It’s worth noting Coe hasn’t had a ton of help – San Jose’s farm team has finished at or below .500 in all three seasons he’s been there. He’ll look to take a step forward next year and ideally put himself in contention for a late-season call-up before becoming an RFA again next summer.

Snapshots: Player Poll, OHL Awards, Price

April 27, 2022 at 5:57 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The NHLPA released the results of their annual Player Poll, which takes the temperature of players around the league on a variety of topics. More than 42 percent of the league, for instance, would pick Connor McDavid if they had to win one game and needed to choose a single skater. McDavid lags well behind Sidney Crosby in terms of the “most complete player” according to the players, as nearly 30 percent of them voted for the Pittsburgh Penguins captain in that category.

While some of those answers may not surprise, the poll also includes things like which NHL arena has the best ice, which player has the best “hockey hair,” and which non-NHL athlete they would like to trade places with. It’s a fun exercise that certainly can cause some heated debate among fans.

  • Meanwhile, the OHL released the results of their own polling, this time for the league’s award finalists. Wyatt Johnston and Brandon Coe are the finalists for the Red Tilson Trophy, given to the Most Outstanding Player. Johnston, a first-round pick by the Dallas Stars in 2021, scored 124 points in 68 games for the Windsor Spitfires, while Coe, a fourth-round pick of the San Jose Sharks, had 101 in 62. Cam Allen and David Goyette are the Rookie of the Year finalists, though the former won’t even be eligible for the NHL draft until 2023. Goyette, 18, was ranked 35th among North American skaters by NHL Central Scouting.
  • After it came to light yesterday that Carey Price would consult with his surgeon about his knee, many eyebrows raised around the hockey world. The veteran goaltender only just made his return to the ice recently, playing in four games for the Montreal Canadiens. While he’s only listed as day-to-day, Price’s visit should raise some concern, according to Eric Engels of Sportsnet, who questions the future of the netminder in the NHL should he be facing another long rehab. Price is signed through the 2025-26 season and carries a cap hit of $10.5MM.

San Jose Sharks Sign Brandon Coe

December 6, 2021 at 3:43 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The San Jose Sharks have signed prospect Brandon Coe to an entry-level contract. Coe currently plays for the North Bay Battalion of the OHL, where he will remain through the end of this season. Sharks director of scouting Doug Wilson Jr. released the following statement about the team’s newest forward:

Brandon is a developing power forward with great skating ability. Last year he gained valuable experience playing in the AHL and we’re proud of how he has taken his offense to the next level this season. He’s leading the OHL in scoring and is a key player on a first place North Bay team.

Coe, 20, was a fourth-round pick by the Sharks in 2020, selected 98th overall after a strong performance in the OHL. He ended up playing in 17 games with the San Jose Barracuda last season on an amateur tryout while the junior league wasn’t in action, but returned to North Bay this season to be part of a dominant group.

In 24 games, he’s shown exactly why his return was such a huge boost to the Battalion’s OHL championship hopes. The 6’5″ forward has 46 points in those two dozen games, good enough to lead the entire league.

His year has only continued to get better with this entry-level contract, which will actually kick in for this season despite his assignment to junior. Once the OHL season ends, he’ll likely join the Barracuda once again to start his professional career.
