Mikael Granlund Misses Practice, Status Unclear
- Michael Russo of the Star Tribune reports that Mikael Granlund wasn’t at Minnesota Wild practice this morning after being spotted limping after the game last night. The Wild won lost to the Detroit Red Wings and Granlund played more than 16 minutes, but we’ll have to wait and see if he returns to the ice tomorrow morning. The Wild take on the Carolina Hurricanes on what is a three-game road trip to start the season.
Minnesota Wild Sign Daniel Winnik
The Minnesota Wild have finally come to terms with Daniel Winnik, signing him to a one-year, $660K contract ahead of the team’s season opener on Thursday night. Winnik had spent training camp with the Wild on a professional tryout, after being unable to find a contract anywhere in the league.
Winnik actually ranked #36 among our Top 50 Free Agents for this summer, after putting up a solid 12 goal, 25 point season a year ago. His contributions are really felt on the penalty kill and defensive side of the game though, where he ranks among the league’s best. All of that didn’t secure him a deal anywhere though, as the 32-year old had to settle for a “prove it” tryout with the Wild.
A relic of the old draft structure, Winnik was selected in the ninth and final round (265th-overall) of the 2004 draft. Immediately he exploded at the NCAA level and wouldn’t take long before debuting with the Phoenix Coyotes in 2007. Since then, he’s played 717 NHL contests and recorded 228 points, while suiting up for 58 playoff contests. He’ll continue that run in Minnesota, where he’s expected to suit up as part of a rotating bottom-six.
Minnesota has always put a high value on defense from their forwards, and head coach Bruce Boudreau knows Winnik from their time in Anaheim together. Winnik received some of the most ice-time of his career while playing for the Ducks, and obviously has a trust in the coach who put him in those situations. While he won’t be asked to play the same role, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him first over the boards on almost every penalty kill this season, even with the outstanding options the team already has.

Central Notes: Winnik, Upshall, DeBrinicat
The Minnesota Wild have seen enough out of Daniel Winnik, who is on a PTO with the team. He has been informed they don’t need to see him again and now begins the waiting game for the 32-year-old forward, who must wait to see if the Wild will choose him over youngsters Joel Eriksson Ek or Luke Kunin, according to The Athletic’s Michael Russo (subscription required).
Winnik, who is looking to play for his eighth NHL team, had a good camp and impressed head coach Bruce Boudreau.
“I pulled him aside and I talked to him and said, ‘Danny, you’ve done great. I know exactly how you play. We just want to look at a couple of the young kids,'” Boudreau said. “So it’s not like he would have to come in here and play great to either make the team or not make the team.”
According to Russo, Kunin has had the better camp so far between the two rookies and the team intends to look at both he and Eriksson Ek more closely in tonight’s preseason game against the Dallas Stars. Kunin, who has been playing center for the team all preseason will be tried at right wing.
As for Winnik, he remains a free agent and could sign with any team, but might have to take a small pay cut if he makes the Wild’s roster as the team is low on cap space.
- The Athletic’s Jeremy Rutherford tweets that Scottie Upshall passed a physical and was signed to a PTO and is currently practicing with the team. The hope is that a contract can be worked out in the next couple of days. Upshall spent the past two years in St. Louis. The 32-year-old fourth-liner had a solid season a year ago with the Blues, scoring 10 goals and eight assists. He was just released from his PTO with Vancouver and has a good chance to return to his old team with the multitude of injuries to players like Patrik Berglund, Zachary Sanford, Robby Fabbri and Alex Steen.
- The Daily Herald’s John Dietz writes that it looks like Chicago Blackhawks’ Alex DeBrincat might make the team, writing that he had an excellent training camp. “It seems like every time he’s around the puck good things happen,” coach Joel Quenneville said to Blackhawks TV reporter Eric Lear. The Hawks still have many decisions to make, according to Dietz, including whether or not to keep seven or eight defensemen.

Minnesota Wild Sign Brennan Menell To ELC
The Minnesota Wild have decided that Brennan Menell is worth a three-year entry-level contract, just months after he went undrafted for the third time. The high-flying defenseman will report to Iowa to try and crack their lineup, or head back to Lethbridge of the WHL for his overage year.
Michael Russo of The Athletic wrote about Menell just two days ago when the Woodbury, Minnesota native played in an exhibition game with the team. His journey is one of being constantly overlooked, but after a 71 point season in the WHL last year he finally earned a shot at the Wild development camp. He’s continued to impress, something that he did on a nightly basis for the Hurricanes, recording the second most points from a defender in the entire league.
There is still a long way to go for the undersized puck-mover, but he hasn’t been stopped yet. His offensive upside is tremendous, and as the game moves more and more towards mobility over physicality he could find a role in the professional ranks right away. The team lists him at 6’0″, 181-lbs which would be a far cry from the smallest player in the league. He won’t be overlooked any longer.
Toronto Marlies With Several NHL Veterans In Camp
While many AHL camps have gotten underway in recent days largely with the early cuts from their NHL affiliates and ECHL hopefuls as “campers”, the Toronto Marlies drew some attention today when they announced a 40-man initial roster featuring several familiar names.
Among the many in attendance are NHL veterans Jordan Caron, Brandon Gormley, Matt Hackett, and Mackenzie Skapski. Caron and Gormley are especially interesting as past first-round picks, while Hackett and Skapski are two of the very few remaining free agent goaltenders on the market. All four players have value in their own right, yet end up not on NHL contracts, or in NHL camps, or even on AHL contracts. Why?
Skapski may be the easiest to explain. After two impressive spot starts at the young age of 21 with the New York Rangers in 2014-15, Skapski’s career has been in free fall. The next year, Skapski posted a 3.00+ GAA and nearly a .900 save percentage in the AHL and ECHL. Those numbers continued to plummet this past season, with Skapski making 13 rough starts in the AHL and spending the majority of the season in the ECHL.
The once-promising Hackett also made his NHL debut at 21 years old with the Minnesota Wild back in 2011-12. Hackett made 12 appearances with the Wild in his rookie season and had an impressive 2.37 GAA and .922 save percentage. While that level of performance was unsustainable, Hackett continued to make a living as a backup or third-string option for the Wild and Buffalo Sabres for years, before taking on more of an AHL depth role for the Anaheim Ducks since 2015. However, too much depth in net, as well as injury issues, limited Hackett to only seven starts last season, in which he was less than spectacular. More of an unknown commodity now than the future-starter tag from years ago, Hackett needs to prove himself once again at the pro level.
Gormley, the 13th overall pick in 2010 by the Arizona Coyotes, has not had the career expected of him when he was selected before fellow defensemen like Derek Forbort, Mark Pysyk, and Justin Faulk early in the draft. Gormley has just 58 games of NHL experience and has not played at the highest level since midway through the 2015-16 season. However, Gormley had been a productive AHLer, with 75 points, more than half a point per game, through his first three pro seasons. In the past two seasons? Only 21 points in 91 games. With the points disappearing, Gormley faces the possibility that his career could be coming to an end soon at just 25 years old. Gormley could use a big camp to keep that from coming to fruition.
Caron is probably the most notable player in any AHL camp on a tryout basis, not just the Marlies’, as the Boston Bruins’ 2009 first-rounder was a “black ace” call-up by the St. Louis Blues mere months ago. While Caron has the appearance of having stuck around the NHL, in actuality he has only played in four NHL games since the end of the 2014-15 season. Nevertheless, the 6’3″, 205-lb. power forward is still a veteran of over 150 NHL games and has shown flashes of ability from time to time. If any of these four player can make the Marlies – and make a difference – it is Caron.
2017-18 Primer: Minnesota Wild
With the NHL season now just a couple of weeks away, we continue our look at what each team has done this summer and what to watch for in the year to come. Today, we focus on the Minnesota Wild.

Player To Watch: D Mat Dumba – The former first-round pick has gone under the radar for the most part but has seen his production and ice time increase each season. There’s a good chance that trend will continue for 2017-18 and the timing will be notable if it does.
Dumba is heading into a contract year and sits as one of two prominent restricted free agents next summer (the other being winger Jason Zucker). He will be coming off of his bridge contract, one that carries a cap hit of $2.55MM. There’s a good case to be made that he could wind up doubling that contract, particularly since he has arbitration eligibility.
The Wild already have three big-ticket contracts on the books defensively with Ryan Suter, Jared Spurgeon, and Jonas Brodin and they are all signed through 2019-20 at the very least. They also have more than $63MM in contracts committed for next season and inking Dumba to a long-term pact will get rid of a big chunk of what they have left to work with.
That’s what makes Dumba worth watching this season as he may wind up forcing Minnesota’s hand two different ways – by playing well enough to earn a big ticket contract while making them move someone out to free up the money to get the deal done while leaving enough on the table for Zucker and the rest of the roster.
Key Storyline: It’s not very often that a backup goalie could be a key factor but this is a rare occasion where that very well may be the case. Devan Dubnyk has been one of the better starters in the league in recent seasons but he has also worn down due to overuse down the stretch. One of their objectives was to find someone who they would be comfortable with starting a bit more frequently to keep Dubnyk rested which is something that is quickly becoming the trend throughout the league.
Alex Stalock is slated to serve as the number two netminder this season. While he has been in that role in the past, he has spent the bulk of the last two seasons at the minor league level. He was given an early extension primarily so that he could be left unprotected in expansion but it’s fair to wonder if he’ll be able to provide them with the 20-25 starts they’ll be looking for. If he struggles early on, it will be worth watching to see if they bring in someone else quickly although their cap situation will most likely limit their options.

Wild To Monitor Zach Parise's Back Throughout The Season
Although Wild forward Zach Parise took part in practice on Friday for the first time in training camp, his back troubles are something that he and the team will be monitoring throughout the course of the season, notes Dane Mizutani of the Pioneer Press. Head coach Bruce Boudreau is hopeful to get Parise into a game before the exhibition schedule comes to a close.
The fact that Parise believes this situation is going to have to be watched throughout the season has to be somewhat concerning, not only for this year but possibly beyond if it continues to linger. He is the highest paid forward on the Wild with a cap hit checking in at just over $7.5MM while he has eight years remaining on his contract.
