Logan Stanley Set To Be Healthy Scratch For Jets

Despite a clean bill of health, Winnipeg Jets defenseman Logan Stanley is expected to be a healthy scratch for Game 4 against the Dallas Stars, per Mike McIntyre of Winnipeg News.

Known for his physical presence, Stanley was injured in Game 6 of the team’s first-round matchup against the St. Louis Blues. Before his injury, he posted 42 penalty minutes in five games and had no points and a negative plus-minus to show for it. The massive 6’7” presence could give the team a physically imposing force on the back end, but his style of play may not be the best matchup against Mikko Rantanen and the Stars’ skill-heavy attack. The 26-year-old recorded one goal, 14 points, 88 hits, 76 blocked shots, and 78 penalty minutes in 63 regular-season contests this season.

As the Jets look to even the series, Haydn Fleury will remain slotted into the lineup on the team’s third defensive pairing alongside veteran Colin Miller. Fleury recorded seven assists and a minus-12 in 39 regular-season games. However, his playoff metrics have looked much better, as he’s produced a plus-two rating and chipped in two assists in five games thus far. Additionally, he has averaged 17:24 of ice time per game in the playoffs — a solid increase from his regular season average of 15:56 — showcasing a growing level of trust in the 28-year-old’s play. That figure was certainly inflated by their double-overtime victory in Game 7 of the first round. However, that opportunity provided Fleury with the platform to highlight the impact Fleury can have on the blue line, as he logged a career-high 33:02 after Josh Morrissey left in the first period with an injury.

Winnipeg coach Scott Arniel recently told media, including NHL.com staff writer Tracey Myers, that Fleury provides the team with a mobile option on the back end. “Again, another skillset. He’s real mobile, he can skate out of trouble. Another guy that can be a part of that rush, a part of what we’re talking about getting after Dallas here and getting on our toes. And that’s what he brings to our game,” Arniel said.

Metro Notes: Palát, Berard, Hollowell

In a recent article from Todd Cordell of Infernal Access, he opines that the New Jersey Devils should look to move on from veteran winger Ondřej Palát this offseason. Whether through a buyout or trade, Cordell believes the salary cap savings could be better used to improve other areas.

Cordell’s argument is credible. Palát is making $6MM in 2025-26 and 2026-27 with a full no-movement clause and a modified 10-team no-trade clause. He hasn’t scored more than 31 points in a season since joining the Devils, and his ice time has dropped significantly over the last three years.

Assuming New Jersey is unable to find a trade partner, given the heavy trade protection, it’s likely the Devils buy out the remaining two years of Palát’s contract if they no longer want him on the team. Using PuckPedia’s buyout calculator, New Jersey would be on the hook for $3.533MM in 2025-26, $2.533MM in 2026-27, and $1.483MM in 2027-28 and 2028-29. Aside from Luke Hughes, the Devils don’t have many high-end players to retain this offseason. Should they need the extra cap savings to pursue a notable free agent, buying out Palát’s contract may be the best route.

  • According to Mollie Walker of the New York Post, New York Rangers forward Brett Berard has been removed from Team USA in the IIHF World Championships due to “physical limitations”. Neither Walker nor team representatives shared specifics regarding Berard’s injury, but he’s expected to be ready for the Rangers’ training camp in September.
  • In his recurring segment analyzing players within the Pittsburgh Penguins organization, Seth Rorabaugh of the Tribune-Review recently looked at defenseman Mac Hollowell of the AHL’s Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Hollowell led all WBS defensemen in scoring this year with one goal and 31 points, but injuries limited him to only 56 games. Despite his offensive maturity in the AHL, there’s Rorabaugh doesn’t believe the Penguins will retain him, given they never recalled him this season.

Calvin Pickard Day-To-Day With Undisclosed Injury

Sunday: Pickard has been ruled out for Monday, relays Daniel Nugent-Bowman of The Athletic (Twitter link).  Skinner will get the nod between the pipes for the second straight game.

Saturday: The Oilers will be making a lineup change heading into tonight’s third game versus Vegas.  However, it’s not one they’d prefer to make as goaltender Calvin Pickard did not take part in the morning skate today.  Following the skate, head coach Kris Knoblauch told reporters including Jesse Granger of The Athletic (Twitter link) that Pickard is listed as day-to-day and that Stuart Skinner will get the nod tonight.  Olivier Rodrigue will serve as the backup.

Skinner returns between the pipes after two very rocky starts to start the playoffs against Los Angeles.  In those outings, he allowed 11 goals on just 57 shots in 108 minutes of playing time for a .810 SV% to go along with a 6.10 GAA.  Edmonton lost both of those games, leading them to turn to Pickard for the third game of that series.

Since then, Pickard has played well, winning all six of his starts despite a below-average save percentage of his own, checking in at .888 but he hasn’t allowed more than four goals in any of his outings, allowing Edmonton’s high-octane offense to help lead them on this winning streak.  However, Tomas Hertl fell into him late in Thursday’s second game and it’s possible that’s where this injury came about.

Skinner is no stranger to playing in high-pressure games as he was Edmonton’s starter for the bulk of their run to the Stanley Cup Final last year but got off to a slow start in that run as well.  Overall, he had a 2.45 GAA and .901 SV% in that postseason.  He also made 50 starts for the Oilers this season, posting a 2.81 GAA and a .896 SV%.  He now has a second chance to try to reclaim his number one spot while trying to lead Edmonton to a commanding three-game lead in the series.

K’Andre Miller Undergoes Surgery

It was a bit of a tough year for Rangers defenseman K’Andre Miller.  Unfortunately for him, his offseason hasn’t gotten off to a good start either.  Mollie Walker of the New York Post relays that the blueliner recently underwent surgery to repair an upper-body injury sustained late in the season.  His initial plan was to rehab the injury and avoid going under the knife but he ultimately opted for the procedure after the rehab wasn’t working as planned.  The hope is that he will be ready to return for the start of next season.

The 25-year-old has been a core defender for New York over his five-year NHL career.  He has shown some flashes of being an all-around top-pairing piece with an intriguing offensive game but inconsistency has been an issue for him.

That was the case this year, as it was for quite a few Rangers.  Miller played in 74 games, picking up 27 points, his lowest point total since the 2021-22 campaign, his first full NHL season.  He also set a new career high in turnovers with 97; his previous high in that regard was 68.

That’s not exactly the ideal platform year heading into restricted free agency this summer, nor does this surgery help on that front.  Miller is arbitration-eligible for the first time and is owed a $4.646MM qualifying offer, matching his salary from this season but well above his $3.872MM cap charge.  If he files for a hearing, he could ask for a two-year agreement that walks him to UFA status but the team would get the final say on if it was a one-year or two-year award.

It’s also worth noting that GM Chris Drury won’t have a lot of cap flexibility this summer.  With the acquisition of J.T. Miller midseason and the long-term record-breaking extension for Igor Shesterkin, the Rangers have just $8.4MM in cap room, per PuckPedia.  Miller isn’t the only player who needs to be signed as winger Will Cuylle is in line for a new deal as well as a restricted free agent and should come in around the $3MM mark at least on a bridge agreement.  That doesn’t leave much wiggle room to hammer out any type of long-term deal.

Heading into the summer, it felt like the likeliest outcome for Miller was a one-year deal at or near his qualifying offer.  Now with the surgery, that might push things even more in that direction over the coming weeks.

Anthony Stolarz Does Not Travel With Toronto For Game 3

Toronto Maple Leafs goalie Anthony Stolarz will not travel with the team for their Game 3 matchup against the Florida Panthers, per an ESPN release.

The team has not formally announced why Stolarz remains out, but he was injured in Game 1 when Florida’s Sam Bennett hit him in the head with his arm, causing Stolarz to leave the game. He was seen vomiting on the bench and was eventually taken to the hospital for evaluation. Berube confirm that Stolarz was doing well and discharged from the hospital later that night.

In his place, backup Joseph Woll has done a commendable job, leading Toronto to a 2-0 series lead against the defending champs. One of the more active backups in the league, Woll started half of Toronto’s games this season, securing a 27-14-1 record to go with a .908 save percentage. He also has a .919 career save percentage in the playoffs through nine appearances.

However, the Leafs’ best path forward undoubtedly relies on a healthy tandem of Stolarz and Woll. Ironically, Toronto’s most experienced goalie in the playoffs is their third option, Matt Murray, who burst onto the scene with the Pittsburgh Penguins and helped them secure back-to-back cups. But he hasn’t been the same player since leaving Pittsburgh and appeared in just two games with Toronto this season.

On the season, Stolarz appeared in 34 games with a 21-8-3 record and .926 save percentage. He delivered a strong performance as the team’s primary goaltender during their six-game first-round series against the Ottawa Senators. And although he only appeared in one playoff game last season, Stolarz gained valuable experience serving as Sergei Bobrovsky’s backup during Florida’s run to the Stanley Cup Final — the same team he and the Maple Leafs are now aiming to eliminate.

Metropolitan Notes: Devils, Jack Hughes, Karlstrom

During today’s exit interviews, New Jersey Devils’ GM Tom Fitzgerald gave a blunt assessment on the team’s future roster, noting that changes are needed as the team isn’t good enough as currently constructed, per team reporter Amanda Stein.

As Fitzgerald told reporters: “It simply wasn’t good enough. I believe in the core of this team, but it’s my responsibility to keep improving it. We’ve got a lot of tough choices ahead, whether that means re-signing players, making trades, or moving on from certain guys.”

Several New Jersey players are set for free agency, including Tomas Tatar, Nathan Bastian, Curtis Lazar, Daniel Sprong, Jake Allen and Brian Dumoulin. Additionally, several players are set for restricted free agency, including defender Luke Hughes, 21, who is set for a massive raise on his current $925,000 contract. Hughes was sidelined during the playoffs due to a shoulder injury and has since undergone surgery to address the issue. According to Fitzgerald, Hughes is expected to be ready in time for training camp.

Elsewhere in the Metro:

  • Fitzgerald also shared that the team believes Jack Hughes, Luke’s brother, has moved past his own shoulder issues following surgery, per Stein. However, Fitzgerald added that the star forward does have a lot of work ahead of him this summer to get back into game shape. He successfully underwent shoulder surgery in early March and was placed on the team’s long-term injured reserve. The Devils noted at the time of his surgery that he was expected to fully recover and be ready for training camp, so Fitzgerald’s announcement today confirms the team’s original timeline.
  • Forward Fredrik Karlstrom, most recently with the New York Islanders organization, has signed a four-year deal with Linköping HC of the Swedish Hockey League, per Tony Androckitis of Inside AHL Hockey. Karlstrom is set to return to his home country after underwhelming in North America since being drafted in the third round by the Dallas Stars in the 2016 draft. He remained in Sweden until 2021-22 season, when he played in three games for the Stars and 65 games for their AHL-affiliate. He spent three seasons playing in the Stars’ organization but mostly suited up in the AHL. All told, he appeared in just eight NHL contests, posting just a single assist. Karlstrom did have his best AHL season last season, posting 21 goals and 44 points in 72 games for the Texas Stars. However, it wasn’t enough for the organization to retain his services, and he signed a one-year, two-way deal with the Islanders last July. He appeared in 30 games for the Isles’ AHL-affiliate, posting just 13 points and a minus-nine rating.

Devils’ Jesper Bratt Undergoes Surgery To Address Multi-Season Injury

The New Jersey Devils lineup is undergoing a wave of tune ups, check ups, and surgeries to get back to full health after the end of their postseason run. For star winger Jesper Bratt, the wave of medical attention has marked a chance to address a shoulder injury that’s plagued him for the last few seasons. General manager Tom Fitzgerald shared with reporters that Bratt has undergone successful shoulder surgery and is expected to return before training camp, per James Nichols of New Jersey Hockey Now. Fitzgerald adds that Bratt chose to get surgery now to help ensure he’s ready for next season and the 2026 Winter Olympics.

The extent of Bratt’s injury, or the pain it caused, isn’t quite clear – but his play on the ice hardly warranted the thought. Bratt has developed into a full superstar for the Devils organization and managed career-highs in scoring in each of the last three seasons. His breakout season came in the 2021-22 campaign, when the top left-winger totaled 26 goals, 47 assists, and 73 points in 76 games. That performance made him just the 30th Devils player to reach 40 assists since 2000 at the time.

Not to be outdone, Bratt matched his 73-point high in 2022-23 – but managed it with 32 goals and 41 assists while playing in all 82 games of the season. That year kicked off a string of unwavering appearances that carried through this season, and Bratt only grew with the nightly appearances. He tallied 27 goals, 56 assists, and 83 points last season; then lapped that total with 21 goals, 67 assists, and 88 points this year. His 67 assists this year mark a franchise record, taking the title from Scott Stevens who recorded 60 points in 1993-94.

It is on the heels of that record-breaking performance that Bratt will take the time to reach full health. He has four years remaining on an eight-year, $63MM contract signed after his repeat 73-point campaign in 2023. With the news that Bratt is expected to reach full health before the season starts, all focus will be on how he can continue to grow on top of a Devils lineup that’s dedicated to change this summer. Bratt’s involvement in the 2026 Olympics will be worth monitoring closely as well. He hasn’t yet joined Team Sweden at the Olympics, though he did appear with the Men’s Team at the 2019 World Championship and 2025 4-Nations Face-Off. Bratt scored four points in nine combined games between the two events.

Devils’ Johnathan Kovacevic Undergoes Knee Surgery

5/8: Kovacevic has undergone successful knee surgery, per Devils’ team reporter Amanda Stein. General manager Tom Fitzgerald confirmed to Stein that Kovacevic is not expected to be ready for the 2025-26 training camp.

5/1: In the wake of their elimination from the 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs, many New Jersey Devils are beginning to reveal the injuries they were playing through. For defenseman Johnathan Kovacevic, that’s a serious knee injury that will require surgery this summer. Kovacevic shared with media that he doesn’t expect to be ready for the start of next season’s training camp, per NHL.com’s Mike Morreale.

Kovacevic sustained his knee injury on the first shift of Game 3. He played through the remainder of the first period before being pulled by team doctors during intermission. With the season now over, Kovacevic shared he is still in the process of sorting things out and will likely remain in New Jersey through much of May. That should allow him to continue consulting with team doctors as he maps out this new injury.

Kovacevic was otherwise a pillar of good health this season. He appeared in all but one of New Jersey’s 82 games this season – with his only absence coming in New Jersey’s final game of the season. He recorded 17 points, 72 penalty minutes, and a plus-10 in the full season effort – career-highs in the former two stats, and one plus shy of tying his high in the latter. It was a statement year after Kovacevic was a healthy scratch in 20 games for the Montreal Canadiens last season. On a young Canadiens blue-line, the defensive-minded Kovacevic fell as the odd-man-out – prompting a trade to the Devils on June 30th. He moved to New Jersey seemingly set on the role of seventh-defenseman, behind either Simon Nemec or Seamus Casey. But his strong defensive play , and up-and-down play from the top prospects, quickly pushed the veteran Kovacevic into an everyday role.

The Devils affirmed Kovacevic’s role in the lineup by signing him to a five-year, $20MM contract extension on March 7th. It’s the longest deal of the 27-year-old’s pro career, after his first seven pro seasons were spent on a pair of three-year deals, and a standalone one-year contract. All three were two-way contracts. For the first time in his career, Kovacevic can stand tall knowing he has a spot in the NHL awaiting him next season. That assuredness, and a vague path forward after this injury, will likely keep Kovacevic from rushing back too quick – even if it means cutting into his pre-season availability next season.

Morning Notes: Pietrangelo, Jankowski, Robertson, Heiskanen

The Vegas Golden Knights were without alternate captain Alex Pietrangelo is Game 1 of the Second Round on Tuesday due to illness. The Golden Knights fell to the Edmonton Oilers by a score of 4-2 without their top-pair defenseman. Pietrangelo played tough minutes for the Golden Knights through the first round, even recording 28:48 in ice time in their overtime win in Game 4. He’s totaled three points in six playoff appearances, while averaging roughly 22:30 in nightly ice time. That mark makes Pietrangelo the second-most utilized defenseman in Vegas’ postseason behind Noah Hanifin, who also has three points. Pietrangelo’s plus-two leads the club in playoff plus-minus, and makes him one of just two defenders with a positive mark, beside Nicolas Hague (plus-one).

The Golden Knights turned towards Kaedan Korczak is Pietrangelo’s absence. Korczak received a sheltered role and under 14 minutes of ice time in what was the first Stanley Cup Playoff appearance of his career. He played through his sophomore season in the NHL this year, netting 10 assists in 40 games after posting nine points in 26 games last season. Korczak is a young, lumbering defenseman who fits Vegas’ M.O. when it comes to shutting down the back-end. But it seems the Golden Knights will need more than that to get around Edmonton and superstar Connor McDavid, who had a point on all four of the Oilers’ goals in Game 1. With a pair of days to rest, Pietrangelo should at least be questionable for Game 2.

Other notes from around the league:

  • Carolina Hurricanes forward Mark Jankowski left the team’s Game 1 matchup early on Tuesday after sustaining an undisclosed injury. Head coach Rod Brind’Amour shared that Jankowski’s injury wasn’t serious and that he’ll be a gametime decision for Thursday’s Game 2, per NHL.com’s Walt Ruff. Jankowski was red-hot in the back-half of Carolina’s regular season after joining the team at the Trade Deadline. He scored eight goals in 19 games with the ’Canes, while shooting at an incredible 38.1 percent success rate. Those numbers have cooled down significantly in the postseason, though Jankowski does have one assist through three appearances so far. He’s been demoted to a seldomly-used, bottom-six role over the start of the postseason, and should be easy to replace if he’s forced to miss time.
  • Dallas Stars head coach Pete DeBoer has shared that forward Jason Robertson will be a game-time decision for Wednesday night’s Game 1, while defenseman Miro Heiskanen will continue to sit out, per Lia Assimakopoulos of the Dallas News. Getting Robertson back would be an incredible boost for the Stars roster. The winger led the team in goals (35) and ranked second in points (80) through 82 games this season. He continues to stand as a pillar of goal-scoring for the Stars, even as he falls short of reaching the 46 goals and 109 points he posted two seasons ago. Robertson has a pattern of producing in the postseason – with 38 points in 45 career games compiled between 2022 and 2024. Heiskanen will be much of the same upgrade when he’s back to full health. He again served as Dallas’ top defenseman this season and managed 25 points in 50 games before going down with injury. Heiskanen has 61 points in 85 career playoff games, including 16 points in 19 games last season.

Pacific Notes: Gavrikov, Kuzmenko, Jeannot, Dorofeyev

Yesterday, the Los Angeles Kings mutually parted ways with their former General Manager, Rob Blake. Despite this change, the team is reportedly looking to secure contract extensions for defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov and forward Andrei Kuzmenko, who are set to become unrestricted free agents this summer (Tweet Link).

Gavrikov has emerged as a top-four option in the Kings’ defense, especially during the Kings’ period without Drew Doughty during the 2024-25 season. In early January, the Kings’ defensive leader in +/- and blocked shots expressed his desire for a long-term contract, saying, “When I got to L.A., I needed time to decide if my family and I wanted to stay. That’s why we agreed on a short-term contract with the Kings. Now we know what we want, and we can sign a long-term deal here.” The most recent comparable for Gavrikov is the six-year, $33.3MM contract extension defenseman Kaiden Guhle signed with the Montreal Canadiens last July. 

Meanwhile, Kuzmenko was acquired from the Philadelphia Flyers in March 2025, with the Flyers retaining 50% of his salary. Known for his net-front presence and power-play contributions, he performed positively in Los Angeles, scoring five goals and 17 points in 22 games. Due to his inconsistent play over the past year, it is challenging to estimate Kuzmenko’s asking price for his next contract.

Other Pacific Division notes:

  • According to John Hoven of Mayor’s Manor, the Los Angeles Kings have not yet initiated extension negotiations with forward Tanner Jeannot. Despite facing injury concerns, Jeannot had a better season than the previous year, scoring six goals and recording 13 points in 67 games, along with 211 hits. If he requests a salary close to his current $2.665 million or lower, there should be mutual interest between him and Los Angeles for an extension in a fourth-line role.
  • Pavel Dorofeyev will not be in the lineup for the Vegas Golden Knights tonight due to an injury sustained in Game 5 of their opening-round matchup against the Minnesota Wild, causing him to miss the remainder of that game and Game 6 (Tweet Link). His status is considered day-to-day as the team monitors his recovery. Despite losing their fourth-highest-scoring forward from the regular season, the Golden Knights still possess ample depth on the wing.
