Detroit Red Wings Bring Back Dan Renouf
The Detroit Red Wings have brought a former prospect back into the organization. They announced the signing of defenseman Dan Renouf today to a one-year contract. PuckPedia reports it’s a two-way deal, carrying an $850,000 cap hit with a $325,000 salary at the minor level and $375,000 guaranteed.
Renouf re-joins his first NHL organization, having signed with the Red Wings as an undrafted free agent in 2015-16 after ending his college career at the University of Maine. Renouf’s since spent time with both the Carolina and Colorado organizations, including a career-high 18-game stint last season with the Avs.
With only 19 games of NHL experience in total, Renouf brings limited NHL upside. However, he adds depth to Detroit’s minor-league defense corps in Grand Rapids and proved this season with Colorado that he can be trusted as an injury replacement. It’s fair value for Renouf, who will probably see NHL action at some point this season.
Detroit Red Wings Sign Pius Suter
After the surprise of not being extended a qualifying offer from the Chicago Blackhawks, Pius Suter has found a home with their historical arch-rivals. The Detroit Red Wings have announced a two-year contract for Suter, who recorded 27 points in 55 games as a rookie this season. Suter will earn $6.5MM total over the two years, his agent reveals on Twitter.
Suter, 25, made quite the impact as a rookie in Chicago, scoring 14 goals and 27 points in 55 games. He received a huge opportunity when Jonathan Toews missed the season due to illness and Kirby Dach was out with a broken wrist, playing way more than anyone ever expected. Those 14 points earned him some Calder Trophy votes and could have landed Suiter a substantial contract through arbitration. Instead, he’ll get a hefty deal from Detroit, where he could reunite with a couple of old junior teammates.
The Swiss forward went undrafted and spent five years in the NLA, but before that he played two seasons in the OHL with the Guelph Storm. The top line on that 2014 Storm team that won the OHL championship? Suter between Robby Fabbri and Tyler Bertuzzi, who both happen to be in the Red Wings organization and could even potentially be a line this season. Bertuzzi of course is a restricted free agent and has been involved in trade rumors over the summer, but GM Steve Yzerman did say recently that they hope to keep him if possible.
Suter will be an unrestricted free agent again when this contract expires, and there’s certainly plenty of minutes up for grabs in Detroit. He’ll have a chance to really establish himself as a premiere UFA option if he can improve on that rookie season and post three straight quality campaigns.
Detroit Red Wings Sign Jordan Oesterle
The Detroit Red Wings have agreed to terms with veteran defenseman Jordan Oesterle on a two-year contract. The deal carries an average annual value of $1.35MM according to Craig Morgan of AZ Coyotes Insider.
Someone has to play defense for the Red Wings this season, so why shouldn’t it be the 29-year-old Oesterle. An undrafted college signing out of Western Michigan University in 2014, the left-shot defenseman has carved out quite a nice NHL career for himself. Starting with the Edmonton Oilers with stops in Chicago and Arizona, Oesterle has suited up for more than 250 games at the highest level.
He’s not a difference-maker, and has just 65 points in his career, but can at the very least handle bottom-pairing minutes on a team that is just trying to install some structure as it builds up from the bottom. On a two-year deal, his role is likely safe even next season when Nick Leddy, Danny DeKeyser, Mar Staal and Troy Stecher will all be scheduled for unrestricted free agency. The fact that Oesterle can play both sides will come in handy as players move in and out of the rebuilding roster.
Detroit Red Wings Sign Ryan Murphy To One-Year Deal
The Detroit Red Wings announced today that they’ve signed defender Ryan Murphy to a one-year contract. The financial details have yet to be released.
Murphy, 28, is an interesting story. The 12th overall pick in 2011, he never reached the expectations many had for him a decade ago, but he also didn’t ever flame out of professional hockey. Instead, he has just continually signed NHL contracts, bouncing up and down between the minor leagues and filling in whenever needed. The majority of his games played game early in his career, but he was still playing in the NHL as recently as 2018-19.
Then, in 2019, he decided to head to the KHL, where he scored 23 points in 56 games. That seemed to get his offensive game right back on track, as he returned this year and led all AHL defensemen in scoring with 27 points in 37 games for the Henderson Silver Knights. That earned him the Eddie Shore Award as the best defenseman in the AHL and a place on the Pacific Division All-Star team.
With 175 NHL games over his career, he’ll join the Red Wings depth chart and could add to that total. He’s still just 28 and could get another opportunity to show what he can do, especially if the team moves some of their veteran options at the trade deadline. Even if he doesn’t, he’ll likely give the Grand Rapids Griffins an All-Star performance, helping develop some of the organization’s young prospects.
Red Wings Re-Sign Sam Gagner And Calvin Pickard
The Red Wings are bringing back a pair of veterans, announcing (Twitter links) that they’ve re-signed Sam Gagner and Calvin Pickard to one-year contracts. PuckPedia reports (Twitter link) that Gagner’s deal is for $850K.
The 31-year-old Gagner was acquired by Detroit back at the 2019 trade deadline for salary matching purposes in the trade that brought Andreas Athanasiou to Edmonton. He did well enough in his brief stint with the Red Wings to earn a one-year deal last summer, albeit at a significant pay cut as he went from a $3.15MM AAV to just $850K in the process. He played in 42 games with Detroit last season, notching seven goals and eight assists and should once again fill a depth role.
As for Pickard, he spent most of the year on Detroit’s taxi squad as their third-string option. He wound up getting in just six games with the Red Wings, posting a 3.16 GAA with a .874 SV% while suiting up only three times with AHL Grand Rapids. He’ll be expected to play much more with the Griffins next season with Alex Nedeljkovic and Thomas Greiss comprising Detroit’s goaltending tandem with the 29-year-old Pickard serving as veteran depth once again.
Taro Hirose Re-Signs With Detroit Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings have re-signed pending UFA Taro Hirose to a one-year deal, keeping him in the organization. Hirose qualified for Group VI unrestricted free agency after playing in only 42 games for the Red Wings over the last three seasons. PuckPedia reports that the two-way deal is worth $850K at the NHL level, $190K at the AHL level and includes a minor league guarantee of $220K.
Hirose, 25, was an undrafted college free agent signed out of Michigan State University in 2019, and wowed down the stretch in his first professional season. With seven points in his first ten games, it looked like the Red Wings had found a legitimate middle-six option for nothing more than an entry-level contract. As with so many players though, that early success quickly faded, and Hirose recorded just seven points in 26 games the following season. He played just six in a Red Wings uniform during 2020-21.
Still, keeping a player with 16 points in 42 NHL games around for depth purposes isn’t a bad thing, especially when he has been such a big part of the AHL attack. In 29 games for the Grand Rapids Griffins this season, Hirose racked up 28 points. While he may never turn into a full-time NHL option, a one-year deal comes with basically no risk for the Red Wings, who can move him in and out of the lineup whenever necessary.
Detroit Red Wings Agree To Terms With Kyle Criscuolo
The Detroit Red Wings have come to terms with one of their unrestricted free agent forwards, coming to a two-year contract extension with Kyle Criscuolo. The minor league veteran will avoid the open market and return to the organization he has spent a good chunk of his professional career with. The financial details have not yet been released.
Criscuolo, 29, wore an “A” as an alternate captain this season for the Grand Rapids Griffins, scoring 11 goals and 19 points in 29 games. The former Harvard standout has spent the majority of his career to this point in the minor leagues, getting just a nine-game taste of the NHL with the Buffalo Sabres in 2017-18. His best years have come with the Griffins, including a Calder Cup-winning season in 2016-17 when he had 41 points in 76 games. That kind of experience and success will only help the other young prospects in the Detroit pipeline as they come through the AHL locker room.
Though he will require waivers to return to the minor leagues, that shouldn’t be an issue for Criscuolo or the Red Wings. He’ll serve as organizational depth this season, while being eligible for call-up in an emergency situation.
Detroit Red Wings Sign Gustav Lindstrom To Two-Year Extension
The Detroit Red Wings tweeted today that they’ve re-signed defenseman Gustav Lindstrom to a two-year extension carrying him through the 2022-23 season. The financial terms of the deal have yet to be disclosed. CapFriendly reports that it’s a one-way deal with an $850,000 cap hit, paying him $750,000 in 2021-22 and $950,000 in 2022-23.
Lindstrom, who’s yet to turn 23 years old, was a second-round selection of Detroit in 2017. The nephew of former NHL defenseman Marcus Ragnarsson, Lindstrom’s struggled to cement a full-time spot in Detroit’s lineup so far in his young career. He’s played in 29 career games across the past two seasons, tallying four assists and a combined 16:21 per night across both years. He’s been an average third-pairing defender up to this point in his NHL path and could reprise that role again next season with a little bit more lineup consistency. He’s a decent penalty-killer and could see more time on Detroit’s units, who had the 22nd-best penalty kill in the league last season at 78.7 percent.
The player has always been known more for his defensive game, so anything above a second- or third-pairing role long term for Lindstrom is likely wishful thinking. Yet a consistent NHL future isn’t out of the question for Lindstrom, whose defensive ability has steadily improved since entering the league despite a small sample size. And especially now, with Dennis Cholowski selected by Seattle in expansion, the goal for the Ostervala-born defensemen next year is simple: cement himself as one of Detroit’s top six defenders.
Marc Staal Re-Signs With Detroit Red Wings
The Detroit Red Wings are bringing back an experienced veteran, re-signing Marc Staal to a one-year contract. Staal was scheduled for unrestricted free agency on Wednesday. Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff reports that the deal is worth $2MM and includes a full no-movement clause.
Staal, 34, ended up in Detroit as part of a camp dump by the New York Rangers last fall, arriving along with a second-round pick for nothing more than future considerations. While the veteran defenseman wasn’t worth his full $5.7MM cap hit, he had a quietly strong season for the Red Wings. Now at 948 games played for his career, Staal should get over the 1,000-game mark next season, joining older brother Eric Staal and younger brother Jordan Staal. There have been a few more injuries along the way for the 6’4″ defenseman, and he may not get quite as many accolades as his brothers, but it’s still been a remarkable career.
Perhaps his most memorable moments came in New York during the 2012 and 2014 playoffs, when he reached the Conference and then Stanley Cup Finals with the Rangers. Part of an incredibly tough trio of defensemen with Ryan McDonagh and Dan Girardi, Staal was relied on for heavy minutes every night. Over his career, that’s been his calling card, as the offensive side never did really materialize. In 948 career games, Staal has recorded 198 points.
For the Red Wings, he can provide a steady hand to put in the lineup every night, insulating the young options that will still be developing. The team now has three veteran options in Staal, Nick Leddy and Danny DeKeyser, each signed only through the 2021-22 season. Should they want to, the Red Wings could likely find a contender for each of them at the deadline, and recoup even more future assets for the rebuild.
