Dallas Stars Sign Gavin White
The Dallas Stars have locked up a player from last year’s draft, signing prospect Gavin White to a three-year, entry-level contract. The deal will likely kick in for the 2023-24 season.
White, 20, was selected 115th overall last summer, after being passed over in his previous year of eligibility. The young defenseman went from three points as a rookie with the Hamilton Bulldogs to 56 in his sophomore OHL season, putting him on the radar of NHL scouts.
This year, he has 37 points in 42 games split between Hamilton and the Peterborough Petes. That’s enough for Dallas to give him an NHL deal, and it will mean he is headed to the AHL next season to play for the Texas Stars.
Dallas Stars Recall Three Players
- The Dallas Stars have placed veteran forward Luke Glendening on injured reserve, retroactive to February 17th. In addition, the Stars called up forwards Frederik Olofsson and Fredrik Karlstrom, as well as netminder Matt Murray. Both Olofsson and Karlstrom have been shuffled from the AHL’s Texas Stars to Dallas quite a few times in recent weeks, while the 25-year-old Murray is still seeking his first NHL game.
Roster Notes: Kings, Shore, Stars
The Los Angeles Kings have announced via a press release that forward Carl Grundstrom has been activated off of injured reserve, while forward Trevor Moore has been placed on the injured reserve. Grundstrom returns from a rather lengthy stay on the IR, having not played since January 11th against the San Jose Sharks. A very physical player, Grundstrom is known to rack up over 100 hits a season, adding a certain physicality to the bottom six of the King’s lineup.
Unfortunately for the Kings, they will lose an important piece of their roster for the near future. Since being acquired from the Toronto Maple Leafs during the 2019-20 season, Moore has really come into his own in Los Angeles. Scoring a career-high of 23 points in his first full year with the Kings in 2020-21, Moore followed that up with his coming out party in 2021-22, scoring a total of 48 points last year. After that impressive run, the Kings decided to keep Moore around long-term, signing him to a 5-year, $21MM contract, ending after the 2027-28 season. Continuing close to a 0.5 PPG pace this year, Moore will be leaving a hole in the King’s roster.
- After trading away Jesse Puljujarvi to the Carolina Hurricanes this morning, Devin Shore has been recalled by the Edmonton Oilers from their AHL affiliate Bakersfield Condors. Playing in under nine minutes a night this season, Shore has scored a total of five points in 33 games. Only 28 years old, Shore is now in his 8th season in the NHL. Not serving on the powerplay or penalty kill once this year, Shore will likely see limited action with the Oilers in the coming days.
- Continuing on their carousel, the Dallas Stars announced that they have once again loaned forwards Frederik Olofsson and Fredrik Karlstrom back to their AHL affiliate Texas Stars. As he is loaned back to the minors for the 8th time this season, Olofsson has managed to suit up in 17 games for the Stars. Registering only four points on the year, Olofsson has been used sparingly by Stars’ head coach Peter DeBoer, failing to average over 10 minutes of action a night. Similarly, Karlstrom will be loaned back to Texas for the 5th time this year. Having served in only three games this year for Dallas, Karlstrom has been employed much the same as his Swedish counterpart.
Stars Recall Karlstrom, Olofsson
- The Dallas Stars have completed their daily transaction, recalling Fredrik Karlstrom and Frederik Olofsson from the AHL. The team continues moving players back and forth between games, banking as much cap space as possible before this Friday’s deadline. Dallas has accumulated enough space to make a significant move without the help of long-term injured reserve.
Fredrik Olofsson Returned To AHL
Dumba, 28, is on an expiring contract, and despite Guerin’s comments that he’ll be in Minnesota through the end of the season, he once again implied that the team wouldn’t be able to (or wouldn’t even try to) re-sign him in the summer. Minnesota is in fourth in the Central but just four points behind the division-leading Dallas Stars.
- Speaking of Dallas, they have once again loaned Fredrik Olofsson to the minor leagues, as they do on almost every off-day. The Stars have been banking cap space all season, and today’s addition of Evgenii Dadonov opened up even more room, due to the salary retention by the Montreal Canadiens. The team now has plenty of flexibility going into this week’s negotiations and could add another significant player.
Dallas Stars Acquire Evgenii Dadonov
The Montreal Canadiens have acquired forward Denis Gurianov from the Dallas Stars in exchange for veteran forward Evgenii Dadonov. Per the team announcement, the Canadiens will retain 50% of Dadonov’s $5MM cap hit.
This move re-unites Dadonov with Stars head coach Peter DeBoer, who was Dadonov’s coach with the Vegas Golden Knights last season. While Dadonov has had his fair share of struggles this season (he has just 18 points in 50 games) DeBoer had a front-row seat last season for some of the best play Dadonov has to offer.
The Stars have a far more talented set of offensive weapons than the Canadiens can boast, so it’s easy to see why DeBoer, given his familiarity with Dadonov, would be comfortable acquiring the winger despite Dadonov’s struggles this season.
CapFriendly notes that this trade leaves the team with just over $2.1MM in deadline cap space, which is enough space for the Stars to be able to add another player should they choose to do so.
The 25-year-old winger was the 12th overall pick at the 2015 draft, and he has been a maddeningly inconsistent scorer. He has been excellent at times, such as the 2020 playoffs where he scored 17 points in 27 games, helping the Stars reach the Stanley Cup Final.
Other times, he has frustrated the Stars with his inconsistent night-to-night effort and inability to land on the scoresheet with any sort of regularity despite his tantalizing offensive tools.
Stars Believed To Be Interested In Austin Watson
The Senators have moved out a couple of veterans already recently in defenseman Nikita Zaitsev and forward Tyler Motte. While they haven’t completely thrown in the towel yet on trying to make the playoffs, Postmedia’s Bruce Garrioch reports that at least three teams have shown interest in acquiring veteran winger Austin Watson. Those three are all Western Conference squads in the Stars, Kings, and Avalanche.
West Notes: Krug, Olofsson, Eller
St. Louis Blues defenseman Torey Krug is set to return to the lineup against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday, head coach Craig Berube told reporters today. It ends a brief absence stemming from a lower-body injury.
It’s been a bumpy road for Krug in 2022-23, who’s missed significant portions of the season. This is the fifth separate occasion he’s missed time with a lower-body injury, including a 13-game-long absence through December and January. Krug’s ice time has dipped below 20 minutes this season, and his -28 rating is tied for the worst on the team. He’ll return to his usual spot alongside Justin Faulk.
- After being sent down yesterday, the Dallas Stars have brought forward Fredrik Olofsson back up from the minors. The 26-year-old has been a frequent call-up as of late, and he’s recorded a goal and three assists in 15 games with Dallas on top of 14 points in 37 games with AHL Texas. Olofsson will draw back into the lineup tomorrow against the Vegas Golden Knights as Luke Glendening and Joel Kiviranta remain sidelined with injuries.
- The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun covered the Washington Capitals’ trade deadline plans in his latest piece and listed pending unrestricted free agent center Lars Eller as a potential fit for the Colorado Avalanche. Eller’s offense has taken a step back this season, recording just seven goals and 16 points in 58 games, but he’d be good depth insurance for an Avalanche team that’s thin at center. As Colorado begins to string wins together ahead of the trade deadline, they hope some depth additions combined with healthy stars propel them back into the “contending” category of teams.
Fredrik Olofsson, Matt Murray Loaned To Texas
- The Dallas Stars have sent down a couple of depth players. Fredrik Olofsson and Matt Murray have been loaned to the Texas Stars. Both players were called up on an emergency basis yesterday to face the Chicago Blackhawks. Olofsson had three shots on goal and Murray served as Jake Oettinger‘s backup in a 4-3 loss.
Dallas Stars Recall Fredrik Karlstrom, Fredrik Olofsson
Feb 20: Round and round we go. Karlstrom and Olofsson have been recalled once again.
Feb 19: The Dallas Stars have announced that forwards Fredrik Karlstrom and Fredrik Olofsson have been reassigned to the team’s AHL affiliate, the Texas Stars.
Karlstrom was originally recalled on February 16th, and played in two games for the Stars, while Olofsson was recalled yesterday to play in that day’s game against the Columbus Blue Jackets.
The pair flanked Stars fourth-line center Radek Faksa at the bottom of head coach Peter DeBoer’s lineup last night, and they each played limited minutes in their time on the Stars’ roster. After the Stars lost 4-1 to one of the NHL’s worst teams, it seems the Stars are shuffling their roster in order to get a different look in their bottom six.
Karlstrom, 25, heads back to AHL Texas where he’s had a solid sophomore season. After scoring 16 goals and 29 points last year, the 2016 third-round pick has picked up right where he left off, and has scored eight goals and 21 points in 40 games this year.
Karlstrom turned pro in 2021-22 after a successful final SHL season with the Vaxjo Lakers, where he scored 25 points in 51 games and helped his team capture the SHL championship. He’ll now head back to Texas to possibly step back into a top-six role, a role he’s occupied at times this season.
As for Olofsson, this reassignment ends a short one-day stay on the Stars’ roster. Olofsson already has 14 games played for Dallas this season and is averaging just under ten minutes of ice time per game in that sample size.
The former University of Nebraska-Omaha star is in his first season as a pro in North America, fresh off of an impressive two-year run with IK Oskarshamn of the SHL.
While he’s unlikely to be thrilled to have spent such a short time in the NHL, the 26-year-old has firmly established himself as a preferred call-up option for the Stars, and will likely find his way back onto their roster once again before the season concludes.
