Minor Transactions: 10/25/19
There may have been ten games on the schedule last night, but it was hard to focus on anyone but Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl who put on a show against the Washington Capitals. The Oilers’ superstars each played more than 26 minutes—leading all players in the game—and carried the weight of the entire team to a win. With six games coming up tonight, we’ll keep track of all the minor moves right here.
- The Boston Bruins have recalled Anders Bjork again today, ahead of their Saturday night matchup against the St. Louis Blues. Bjork was given his first NHL opportunity of the season against the Toronto Maple Leafs earlier this week.
- Givani Smith has been recalled by the Detroit Red Wings after serving his one-game suspension in the AHL. The physical forward has four points in four games for the Grand Rapids Griffins, and was impressive in the preseason with Detroit.
- With Marco Scandella suffering an injury last night for the Buffalo Sabres, the team has recalled Will Borgen today to give them another option. The Sabres are back in action right away against the Red Wings, meaning if Scandella can’t go either Borgen or John Gilmour should be expected to enter the lineup.

Snapshots: Seidenberg, Vilardi, Cizikas
Dennis Seidenberg has finally called it quits after a long professional career, according to a report out of Germany. Seidenberg suited up for 859 regular season games in the NHL, winning the Stanley Cup with the Boston Bruins in 2011. He also appeared in the Olympics on three different occasions, and was included on Team Europe at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.
Seidenberg actually signed a contract with the New York Islanders in February of this year that covered the remainder of the 2018-19 NHL season, but didn’t play for the team. The veteran defenseman will end his career with 251 NHL points, not bad for a sixth-round pick.
- While the Los Angeles Kings are “happy” with where Gabe Vilardi is in his recovery process after returning to the ice recently, team reporter Jon Rosen writes that the young forward will have to deal with pain management for the rest of his career. Vilardi’s back injury has stopped him from becoming the player the Kings were hoping for when they used the 11th overall pick for him in 2017, but at just 20-years old there is still plenty of time for him to make an impact.
- The New York Islanders have activated Casey Cizikas from injured reserve, placing Leo Komarov there instead. Komarov is just dealing with an illness however, meaning the Islanders will soon have to make a different move to clear a roster spot. Oliver Wahlstrom and Noah Dobson are the only two players who are waiver-exempt, though Cole Bardreau cleared recently enough that he could also be sent down without having to go through the process again.
Adam Gaudette Sent To AHL
The Vancouver Canucks have sent forward Adam Gaudette to the minor leagues, deciding that it is more important to get him into some game action. Gaudette hasn’t played in almost two weeks, suiting up just three times so far for the Canucks this season.
The 23-year old was a fifth-round pick in 2015, but quickly became one of Vancouver’s top prospects after dominating collegiate competition while at Northeastern University. Gaudette scored 112 points in 116 games over three seasons, culminating in a Hobey Baker award as the nation’s top college player in 2018. Since then he has played in 64 games for the Canucks, though they haven’t gone quite as well.
After impressing again in training camp this season Gaudette was given a chance to play early on, but he struggled and was quickly moved out of the lineup. If he is ever to become the legitimate middle-six NHL forward that the Canucks believe he can be, sitting in the press box every night isn’t going to get him there.
Gaudette will join a Utica Comets team that is off to a 5-0 start this season, led by Reid Boucher‘s eight goals and a stifling defensive core. The team will only become that much more dangerous with him in the lineup, especially after he proved he could dominate at the AHL level last season with 11 points in 14 games.
Jordan Kyrou Loaned To AHL
According to the AHL transaction page, St. Louis Blues forward Jordan Kyrou has been loaned to the San Antonio Rampage. That would indicate that Kyrou is close to returning from the offseason knee surgery that had him on season-opening injured reserve to begin the year.
Kyrou, 21, is one of the top prospects for the Blues after impressing in the AHL last season. Though he recorded just three points in his 16 games with St. Louis, he was often the best player on the ice in the minor leagues and had 43 points in 47 games to show for it.
There’s obviously no guarantee that he’ll be back with the Blues right away whenever he is deemed healthy, but Kyrou could give the team another option as they look to overcome their sluggish start. Sitting at 4-2-3 so far, the team has allowed 30 goals in nine games and doesn’t quite look like the stingy team that took home the Stanley Cup just a few months ago.
Daniel Walcott Placed On Waivers
Thursday: According to CapFriendly, Walcott has cleared waivers.
Wednesday: The Tampa Bay Lightning have placed Daniel Walcott on waivers, indicating that he is healthy enough to return to action after starting the year on season-opening injured reserve. Walcott missed almost all of the 2018-19 season with a shoulder injury, playing just five games with the Syracuse Crunch.
A fifth-round pick of the New York Rangers in 2014, Walcott is already 25 and has yet to play in a single NHL game. He was re-signed by the Lightning in June to a one-year, two-way deal just before he would have become a Group VI unrestricted free agent, obviously loyal to the organization that had worked with him through his rehab.
While he’s not expected to play a big role with the Lightning anytime soon, Walcott will be a welcome addition to the Crunch who are off to a slow start in the AHL. Any claiming team would need to keep him in the NHL, something that is very unlikely at this point.
Minor Transactions: 10/24/19
After the NHL held just two games on Wednesday night, this evening’s action is quite a bit busier. Ten games are scheduled, including a matchup between two division leaders in Edmonton. The Oilers are still holding onto the Pacific Division despite two straight losses, while the Washington Capitals are the hottest team in the Eastern Conference and now sit at 7-2-2. As teams prepare for the big night, we’ll be here keeping track of all the minor moves.
- The Florida Panthers have recalled Riley Stillman from the minor leagues, giving them another defenseman for their western road trip. The team takes on the Calgary Flames tonight and then has a back-to-back situation in Edmonton and Vancouver starting Sunday.
- After playing yesterday afternoon, Joel Hanley is back with the Dallas Stars. Recalled from the minor leagues, Hanley will give the Stars another option when they welcome in the Anaheim Ducks tonight. Dallas is in the midst of a four-game homestand, giving them the opportunity to flip players back to the Texas Stars on off days to keep them fresh.
- Logan Day is on his way to the Bakersfield Condors after being activated from the season-opening injured list. Day earned a one-year NHL contract in May after playing 64 games for the Condors last season. The 25-year old defenseman had 34 points, leading all Bakersfield defensemen.
Andrei Markov Signs In KHL
After a NHL return attempt failed to produce a contract this summer, Andrei Markov has returned to the KHL. Lokomotiv Yaroslavl announced today that Markov has signed a trial contract with them, keeping him overseas for the time being. The 40-year old defenseman had expressed a desire to return to the NHL, but never did land a new contract.
The long time Montreal Canadiens star left for the KHL in 2017 after 990 regular season NHL games, and actually won a Gagarin Cup with Kazan Ak-Bars in his first year back in Russia. One of the most successful and decorated Russian defensemen of all-time, Markov has three championships in his home country, three World Championship medals, a World Junior silver and took part in multiple NHL All-Star games.
Selected in the sixth round of the 1998 draft, Markov quickly became a household name after making the move to the NHL, and was one of the most consistent two-way defenders in the league for some time. Racking up 572 points over his career, he is tied with Guy Lapointe for second among all Montreal defensemen, only trailing the great Larry Robinson.
Snapshots: Scandella, Sparks, Tatar
The Buffalo Sabres have been the topic of trade speculation since before the season began, starting with the acquisitions of Colin Miller and Henri Jokiharju. Suddenly the team had more defensemen than seemed necessary and many people believed they would soon make a move. That speculation quickly focused on Rasmus Ristolainen after some interesting training camp quotes, but after a few early injuries things have quieted down.
Now, with some of those injured players returning, Buffalo is back in the spotlight. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports however that Ristolainen may no longer be the target, suggesting that the focus is now on veteran defenseman Marco Scandella and his expiring contract. Scandella carries a cap hit of $4MM for the rest of this season and then is scheduled for unrestricted free agency.
- Not only have the Vegas Golden Knights recalled Nicolas Hague a few hours after they assigned him to the minor leagues—Hague played this afternoon for the Chicago Wolves—they’ve also brought up Garret Sparks. The former Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender has been outstanding through four games for the Wolves, carrying a .931 save percentage for the AHL club. Oscar Dansk struggled in his first chance as the replacement for the injured Malcolm Subban, and it seems as though Sparks will get the next opportunity.
- Tomas Tatar left practice today for the Montreal Canadiens with a lower-body injury according to Eric Engels of Sportsnet, though the team has not issued an official update so far. It’s been a rollercoaster ride in the early season for Tatar, who has seven points through nine games but has also taken six minor penalties.
Connor Murphy Placed On LTIR
The Chicago Blackhawks will be without Connor Murphy for the next while and have placed him on long-term injured reserve with a groin injury. That means he will have to miss a minimum of ten games and 24 days. The team has recalled Dennis Gilbert from the AHL in the meantime, and acquired Ian McCoshen from Florida last night.
Murphy hasn’t been quite the player that the Blackhawks hoped for when they acquired him from the Arizona Coyotes in 2017, but he was still logging more than 21 minutes a night this season in the five games for which he was (relatively) healthy. The 26-year old never developed a ton of offensive ability but can still use his long reach and physicality to shut down things in the defensive zone.
The Blackhawks have revamped a large part of their defense this season with the additions of Calvin de Haan, Olli Maatta and Slater Koekkoek, and will now have to rely on the newcomers even more.
Gilbert, who was picked in the third round of the 2015 draft, has only played two games in his NHL career so far, but is still an interesting prospect for the Blackhawks. A solid presence on the Notre Dame blueline, it will be interesting to see if he gets much of an opportunity in Murphy’s absence.
