Minor Transactions: 11/11/19
A new week begins by celebrating Veterans or Remembrance Day (depending on your place of origin), a cause linked closely to the hockey world for some time. There are two games on tap around the NHL, including the teams from the capitals of both Canada and the United States. Washington will try to keep their recent hot streak rolling against the Arizona Coyotes, while Ottawa travels to Carolina in search of their third consecutive win. As those and the rest of the league’s teams prepare for action, we’ll be right here keeping track of all the minor moves.
- The Tampa Bay Lightning have sent Alexander Volkov back to the minor leagues after the young forward played in four games with the team. Volkov, 22, was given an opportunity with some of Tampa Bay’s best forwards, but failed to record his first NHL point. There is plenty of time for that though as he looks to be quite high in the prospect depth chart for the Lightning.
- After giving him a chance to travel with the Buffalo Sabres to Sweden for the Global Series games, Lawrence Pilut has been returned to the minor leagues. The Swedish defenseman didn’t actually play in the overseas games, but still got to experience the trip as a member of an NHL club. Pilut hasn’t played for the Sabres yet this season, but does have six points in eight minor league appearances.
- Though there has been no update yet on Torey Krug‘s status after he left last night’s game, the Boston Bruins have recalled Urho Vaakanainen from the minor leagues under emergency conditions. That would suggest that Krug is out for at least one game, but we’ll have to wait and see later today.
- The Detroit Red Wings are on a heater since acquiring Robby Fabbri, and now bring back another exciting young forward. Givani Smith has been recalled by the team for the second time this season. Smith has played in three games for the Red Wings so far but is still looking for his first NHL point.
- The Vegas Golden Knights don’t play until Wednesday and have completed their usual off-day assignment of Nicolas Roy and Nicolas Hague, but the pair have a third member on the bus to the AHL. Cody Glass has also been sent to the Chicago Wolves today, a curious move given his success so far this season. Glass has seen his ice time reduced significantly over the last two games, playing fewer than 12 minutes in each.
- Gavin Bayreuther didn’t leave Winnipeg with the Dallas Stars and instead was reassigned to the Texas Stars who play the Manitoba Moose this afternoon. The 25-year old defenseman hasn’t played in a game for Dallas yet this season.
- Brendan Guhle has been recalled by the Anaheim Ducks, while the team reassigned Simon Benoit to the AHL. Guhle was sent down at the end of October and has played well with the San Diego Gulls, registering four points in four games.
Snapshots: Sobotka, Archibald, Hall
Buffalo Sabres forward Vladimir Sobotka was removed from today’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning after being hit low by Nikita Kucherov, and did not return. John Vogl of The Athletic saw Sobotka after the game in an air cast, but Sabres’ head coach Ralph Krueger wouldn’t speculate on how long he will be out.
Though he has been the whipping boy for many Sabres fans frustrated with the team’s lack of secondary scoring, Sobotka still seems to be a favorite of the coaching staff that continues to give him regular ice time. In his first season with Buffalo last year he failed to make much of an impact scoring just 13 points in 69 games, and has just three so far this season. The Sabres will likely insert Evan Rodrigues into the lineup for the other Global Series game tomorrow afternoon.
- The Edmonton Oilers have activated Josh Archibald from injured reserve, and will also have Riley Sheahan back in the lineup when they take on the New Jersey Devils tonight. The team is looking to get back in the win column after two straight losses to Western Conference opponents, but still sit atop the Pacific Division with a 10-5-2 record.
- Taylor Hall will be front and center in that matchup as he returns to Edmonton in the midst of plenty of contract speculation, including some suggesting that the Oilers would have some interest in bringing him back. Mark Spector of Sportsnet examines the Hall situation, explaining how the player has expressed clearly his desire to return to the playoffs before his time as a star in the league runs out. The Devils sit at 4-6-4 on the season, in last place in the Metropolitan Division.

We’re now more than a month into the 2019-20 regular season and the NHL has provided surprise and shock on a daily basis. Some of the most incredible goals of the last decade have been scored early on, including Andrei Svechnikov‘s latest contribution to lacrosse lore. With teams starting to understand what they have to work with, trade talks will soon start to heat up with bigger and bigger names hearing their names floating around.
With that in mind, it’s time to run another edition of our mailbag. You can submit a question by using #PHRMailbag on Twitter or by leaving a comment down below. Make sure you get your questions in early and we’ll try to get through as many as possible when the mailbag runs on the weekend.

In the first part, Brian gave Barry Trotz and the New York Islanders the benefit of the doubt and they have responded with a league-best nine-game win streak—you’re welcome, Islanders fans. The second part took a look at the Buffalo Sabres situation on defense and examined how the salary cap is determined.
Nikita Zadorov Out Indefinitely
The Colorado Avalanche have lost Nikita Zadorov indefinitely after he took a puck to the face. There is some concern that he suffered a broken jaw, but the team will not comment on the injury until he sees a doctor later today. Nathan MacKinnon, who also left last night’s game early, is expected to play tomorrow.
Zadorov hasn’t had an easy season to this point, sitting as a healthy scratch at times and seeing his ice time routinely fluctuate. The 24-year old is one of the most feared physical defensemen in the league, but is still inconsistent with the puck and can put his team in penalty trouble.
With the Avalanche now flush with exceptional young defensemen, it’s unclear what the future will really bring for Zadorov. His current contract carries a $3.2MM cap hit and will expire at the end of the year, making him a restricted free agent once again. Missing a chunk of the season won’t help his case in arbitration, if it even gets that far with Colorado.
The team wasted little time bringing a player up to replace Zadorov but instead of recalling a defenseman, forward Jayson Megna is on his way up. Megna has played in four games with Colorado so far this season but has averaged just over five minutes per game.
Kris Letang Out “Week-To-Week”
The Pittsburgh Penguins haven’t been able to stay healthy at all this season. Just as they were starting to get some of their pieces back up front, head coach Mike Sullivan announced today that Kris Letang will be out “week-to-week” with a lower-body injury.
Letang sat out the team’s last game against the New York Islanders, which led to Justin Schultz playing a season-high 25:20 in the win. That’s likely the way the Penguins will navigate their top defenseman’s absence, leaning on Schultz to eat a lot of the vacant minutes.
Another player to keep an eye on though is young John Marino, who has been used extensively in the past few games as he continues his impressive rookie campaign. The 22-year old was acquired from the Edmonton Oilers in the summer for a sixth-round pick and quickly decided to leave Harvard for the professional ranks. That has paid off so far for the Penguins, who add a capable defender for almost nothing.
NHL Announces 2020 Global Series Events
In his press conference at today’s Global Series game in Sweden, NHL commissioner Gary Bettman announced that the league will be returning to Europe next year. The Boston Bruins and Nashville Predators will be heading to Prague, Czech Republic, while the Colorado Avalanche and Columbus Blue Jackets will face off in Helsinki, Finland. The Bruins and Predators will also be taking part in exhibition games in Germany and Switzerland respectively.
It’s immediately obvious why the Bruins were one of the choices to play in Prague, as they hold arguably the best Czech player in the world right now. David Pastrnak has 15 goals and 30 points through his first 15 games and looks like he may challenge for the Hart Trophy this season. The team also has David Krejci, one of the country’s most celebrated NHL players.
Finland won’t be disappointed though, as Mikko Rantanen will get a chance to play in his home country. The injured forward is off to one of the most impressive starts by any Finnish-born player, and actually already ranks 30th in scoring among NHL players from the country.
The Global Series games have been a huge success so far and show no signs of slowing down. The Prague game will start the 2020-21 season, while the dates for the other matchups will be announced at a later date.
Ville Heinola Returning To Finland
The Winnipeg Jets have assigned Ville Heinola to Lukko Rauma of Finland’s Liiga, ending his North American development for the time being. The 18-year old defenseman will still be under contract with the Jets and can technically be recalled, but will likely play the rest of the season in his home country. The first year of his entry-level contract will not be burned after playing in just eight NHL games.
Selected 20th overall in June’s draft, Heinola made an immediate impression on the Jets coaching staff and cracked the roster out of training camp. Playing in any professional league at 18 is a challenge, but with his previous experience from Liiga, the young defenseman was incredibly impressive at the NHL level. Thrust into a leading role as the team dealt with injuries (and absences), Heinola recorded five points in eight games before the Jets decided it was better off for his development to play in the minor leagues. He’ll now continue that path in Finland where he can carry even more responsibility.
Perhaps most notably, this means Heinola is a virtual lock for the Finnish World Junior team this winter. In what might be his last chance to play in the tournament, he should be relied on heavily by the coaching staff to play against the other top junior players in the world.
Artem Anisimov Placed On Injured Reserve
The Ottawa Senators will be without one of their veteran forwards for the next while. According to Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia, Artem Anisimov has been placed on injured reserve with a groin injury that will keep him out long-term. Anisimov was only recently activated by the Senators after missing several games and scored his second goal of the season last night against the Los Angeles Kings.
Now 31, Anisimov finds himself at something of a crossroad in his NHL career. After playing several seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks and finding success with linemates like Patrick Kane and Artemi Panarin, the Russian forward was traded for the third time in his career this July. The Blackhawks received just Zack Smith in return, a player who had scored just 14 goals since the beginning of the 2017-18 campaign, while the Senators hoped Anisimov could provide some veteran stability down the middle.
Unfortunately, a long-term injury puts that role into question. The Senators are embracing their core of young talent, scratching high salaried players like Bobby Ryan and Mikkel Boedker recently. If Anisimov misses a good chunk of this season, it certainly puts into question what his future in Ottawa can be.
With one more year on his contract that carries a $4.55MM cap hit, Anisimov could now be considered a bit overpriced for the impact he brings on a nightly basis. The fact that he’ll be owed a $1.5MM signing bonus next summer also makes his future more complicated, as the Senators haven’t been known to pay out money when they don’t have to.
If he can get back on the ice and healthy, perhaps there is another landing spot in Anisimov’s future. For now, he’ll have to just focus on his recovery and try to show he can still be a valuable NHL player.
Several Players Placed On Waivers
Friday: All four players have cleared waivers. Lintuniemi will now see his contract terminated, while the other three can be sent to the minor leagues.
Thursday: The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed a pair of players on waivers in order to start clearing room for the nearing return of Zach Hyman. Martin Marincin and Nic Petan find themselves on waivers alongside Edmonton Oilers forward Tomas Jurco today, according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Alex Lintuniemi of the Carolina Hurricanes has also been placed on unconditional waivers.
Petan actually made it through waivers already this season but needs them again after spending at least 30 days on the NHL roster. The Maple Leafs had been trying to find a landing spot for him and Marincin, but neither appear to have generated much trade interest at this time. Teams can now claim them for free, though they would then have to stay on the NHL roster. Clearing waivers could potentially increase their value, though they also may just end up with the Toronto Marlies.
Toronto needs to clear a third roster player before activating Hyman off long-term injured reserve, and though the consensus seems to be that Jason Spezza is that player, Dmytro Timashov and Nick Shore remain candidates.
In Edmonton, the Oilers have apparently made the same determination other organizations had previously come to that Jurco isn’t consistent enough to keep on the NHL roster. Given a glorious opportunity to play in the top six with some of the game’s best players, Jurco never did grab hold of the spot and has just two points in 12 games. The 26-year old would be on his sixth organization if he were claimed.
For Lintuniemi, unconditional waivers likely precedes a mutual contract termination. After being left unqualified by the Los Angeles Kings, the 24-year old defenseman signed a one-year deal with Carolina this summer but has played just four games with the Charlotte Checkers of the AHL. He would become an unrestricted free agent once again should the termination go through.
Minor Transactions: 11/08/19
So much for a Colorado Avalanche team struggling to score without two members of their top line. The team exploded for six second period goals last night to down the Nashville Predators 9-4, but did lose another few bodies to injury. While we wait for news on Nathan MacKinnon‘s precautionary removal, the rest of the league is preparing for the weekend action. As always, we’ll keep track of all the minor moves right here.
- Last night the Detroit Red Wings sent Joe Hicketts back to the minor leagues, ending his short run in the NHL. The 23-year old defenseman averaged just over 18 minutes a game in four contests, but will have to wait for his next opportunity at the highest level.
- The Philadelphia Flyers have recalled veteran forward Andy Andreoff while loaning Mikhail Vorobyev back to the minor leagues. Andreoff, 28, hasn’t played in the NHL since the 2017-18 season with the Los Angeles Kings, but does have seven points in 10 games for the Lehigh Valley Phantoms.
- After clearing waivers, Tomas Jurco and Nic Petan have both been assigned to the minor leagues by their respective teams. Martin Marincin has avoided that fate for the time being, though the Toronto Maple Leafs are still expected to clear a few more bodies before Zach Hyman returns next week.
- Otto Koivula is back up from the minor leagues for the New York Islanders, which could mean their injured forwards aren’t quite ready to return just yet. Jordan Eberle and Leo Komarov both practiced in regular jerseys today, but aren’t guaranteed to be ready for tomorrow’s afternoon game.
- Jalen Chatfield has received his first call-up of the season and is on his way to join the Vancouver Canucks. The 23-year old defenseman has yet to make his NHL debut and will serve as insurance for Chris Tanev who is dealing with injury.
- Kyle Capobianco has been sent back to the AHL, meaning Jordan Oesterle may be ready to go for the Arizona Coyotes. The 22-year old Capobianco has to be used to this by now after being involved in six transactions since the start of the season.
- Gavin Bayreuther has been recalled by the Dallas Stars, giving the team an extra defenseman as they deal with injuries on the back end. The 25-year old played 19 games for Dallas last season, scoring five points and recording 10 penalty minutes.
