Cole Caufield Sent To AHL

November 1, 2021 at 11:20 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 7 Comments

The Montreal Canadiens have decided that Cole Caufield needs some more seasoning, sending the high-flying winger to the minor leagues after a tough start to his season. Mathieu Perreault has been moved to injured reserve, while Michael Pezzetta has been recalled to take Caufield’s place on the active roster.

Caufield, 20, came into the season as one of the presumptive favorites for the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year, after his outstanding performance in the 2021 playoffs. The undersized winger had four goals and 12 points for the Canadiens on their Stanley Cup Finals run, showing blazing speed and huge offensive upside. That offensive performance has been nowhere to be found this season, however, as Caufield has recorded just a single assist and no goals through the first ten games of the season.

Still, it’s hard to ignore the fact that at least some of that is due to poor luck through the first month of the season. Caufield is still tied for the second-most shots on the team and it’s not like anyone is really lighting up the score sheet in Montreal. Free agent signing Mike Hoffman leads the team in goals with four, while Perreault’s hat trick from earlier this season puts him in second place at three. Usually, reliable offensive players like Tyler Toffoli, Brendan Gallagher, Nick Suzuki, and Jeff Petry have all been unable to break through, making Caufield’s struggles at least a little bit easier to swallow.

The fact is though, if the Canadiens are going to struggle so badly to create offense at the NHL level, why not let Caufield show what he can do with big minutes in the minor leagues. The 2019 first-round pick basically skipped the AHL, playing just two games there last season after his time at the University of Wisconsin ended. He’ll now go back to work on his game and get his confidence back, while the Canadiens give Pezzetta a chance at the NHL level.

AHL Shuffle: 11/01/21

November 1, 2021 at 9:50 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Just three games are on the NHL schedule as the calendar turns to November, but that doesn’t mean front offices are on holiday. There will still be several moves made throughout the league and as always, we’ll keep track of them right here.

Atlantic Division

  • The Tampa Bay Lightning have recalled Gabriel Dumont from the AHL, sending Fredrik Claesson back in his stead. With Cal Foote back and ready to return to action for the Lightning, they didn’t need the extra defenseman. Dumont meanwhile is off to another strong start in the minors, scoring five points in his first seven games for Syracuse.
  • After calling them up yesterday on a paper transaction, Joey Anderson and Kirill Semyonov are back down in the minors for the Toronto Maple Leafs. Timothy Liljegren, who was sent down temporarily to make room, is back with the big club.

Metropolitan Division

  • Aliaksei Protas could become the latest rookie to make his debut for the Washington Capitals this season after being recalled from the AHL. The team has placed Nic Dowd on injured reserve after he suffered an injury at practice last week, opening up room for the 6’6″ Protas to join the group. The 20-year-old forward has four points in six games for the Hershey Bears this season.

Central Division

  • The Dallas Stars have recalled Thomas Harley from the AHL. Harley has one assist in six games for the Texas Stars this season after starring as a rookie for them in 2020-21. The 20-year-old first-round pick is a big part of the Stars future on defense but has only suited up once for them to this point–a playoff game in 2020.
  • It’s Joel Hofer who has been recalled by the St. Louis Blues to fill in for Ville Husso while the backup netminder sits in the COVID protocol. Hofer, 21, hasn’t played in the NHL yet but does have a .936 save percentage through his first four AHL appearances this season.

Pacific Division

  • Austin Strand has been loaned back to the AHL by the Los Angeles Kings, leaving them with six defensemen on the active roster for the time being. With the Kings off until Wednesday, this is likely just a paper transaction to accrue some additional cap space between games.

Cedric Paquette To Have Hearing With Department Of Player Safety

November 1, 2021 at 9:11 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

The Department of Player Safety has some more work to do, as Montreal Canadiens forward Cedric Paquette will have a hearing today for his hit yesterday on Trevor Zegras of the Anaheim Ducks.

Partway through the first period, Zegras was collecting a puck in his own end and was hit from behind by Paquette. The Montreal forward was given a five-minute boarding penalty, a two-minute roughing penalty and a game misconduct for the hit and the scrum that came afterward. Those 17 minutes in penalties won’t be the only discipline he receives though, as the hearing today suggests a suspension is coming.

Zegras ended up returning to the game, which should help Paquette’s case, but it still appears as though the Canadiens will have to go without their fourth-line center for at least tomorrow’s match against the Detroit Red Wings. Montreal is trying to find any way to salvage the early part of the season after losing their eighth game, and are about to start a five-game homestand.

Ville Husso Placed In COVID Protocol

October 31, 2021 at 11:23 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

The St. Louis Blues didn’t have Ville Husso on the ice at practice this morning, and it’s because he has been added to the COVID protocol. He joins Ryan O’Reilly, who has been unavailable the last several days. Brandon Saad, who had previously been in the protocol, rejoined the team this weekend and was on the ice this morning. Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff tweets that his colleague and former pro goaltender Mike McKenna will strap on the pads again to help out the Blues at practice.

If Husso is a confirmed positive and held out for the next little while, the Blues will need to find a new backup goaltender for their games later this week. The team is off until Wednesday, giving some flexibility for testing, but it seems likely that Charlie Lindgren could be recalled for the first time this season. The 27-year-old Lindgren signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Blues this summer after hitting free agency, and has played in two games for the Springfield Thunderbirds so far.

There have been many players ruled out because of COVID testing this year, but goaltenders, in particular, are obviously a tough situation for any team. This is exactly why some clubs expressed a desire to keep a taxi squad of sorts for that specific position, allowing every team to travel with a third netminder. If the Blues were playing in Los Angeles tonight instead of Wednesday, it may have been difficult to get someone across the country in time–McKenna’s appearance at practice exemplifies that.

Aatu Raty Changes Liiga Teams

October 31, 2021 at 11:10 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

A few years ago, Aatu Raty was on track to challenge for the first overall pick in the 2021 NHL draft. That seems insane now, given how far he fell this fall, but it’s true–the young Finnish forward was a hugely touted minor and junior prospect, who made his Liiga debut in 2019-20 and starred at the World Junior Championship despite being the youngest player in the tournament. Unfortunately, the years since haven’t been nearly as successful, stuck at the bottom of the lineup for Karpat and left off last year’s WJC team altogether. Raty ended up going 52nd overall to the New York Islanders, nearly dropping all the way to the third round.

Now, after another brutal start to his Liiga season, with just one point and barely any playing time in six games, Raty is getting a new opportunity. Karpat has officially announced a move that will send Raty (along with Veli-Matti Tiuraniemi) to Jukurit in exchange for Axel Rindell, a Toronto Maple Leafs sixth-round pick.

To be clear, this isn’t a move to a contender for Raty. In fact, Karpat is one of the most consistently powerful teams in Liiga, while Jukurit certainly doesn’t stand in that category. This season, the former is near the top of the table once again, while the latter is struggling to reach a .500 winning percentage. That’s exactly the point though, as Raty should be given a much bigger role in the Jukurit lineup and hopefully will be able to get his development back on track.

The Islanders signed Raty to a three-year entry-level deal in August, but loaned him back overseas after a few preseason appearances. They likely had at least some sort of influence on the move, hoping to get their young forward more playing time. They could technically recall him and put him in the AHL if they felt it was a better option, though current success at that level seems unlikely for the 18-year-old.

Seth Jarvis To Make NHL Debut; Nino Niederreiter Out

October 31, 2021 at 9:43 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Despite putting up 11 points in nine games for the Chicago Wolves of the AHL last season, Carolina Hurricanes forward Seth Jarvis was not eligible to return to the minor leagues this time around. He’s still just 19, and given he didn’t cross the 20-game threshold to secure a one-time AHL exemption like some other prospects, if he failed to make the Hurricanes he would have to return to the Portland Winterhawks of the WHL.

At the end of training camp, the team did not send Jarvis back, but also didn’t put him in the NHL lineup. The Hurricanes have played in seven games (and won them all); Jarvis has played in none.

That will change this afternoon when the young forward enters the lineup for his NHL debut. After Nino Niederreiter suffered a lower-body injury on Friday night, the Hurricanes have confirmed that Jarvis comes in against the Arizona Coyotes. Niederreiter is expected to be out a few weeks with the ankle injury, a big blow for a player that was off to a nice start to the season. With three goals already, the 29-year-old was well on his way to another 20-goal campaign, a level he returned to in 2020-21 after a disappointing performance the year prior.

Selected 13th overall in 2020, Jarvis has already shown he can dominate the junior ranks and has little to prove with the Winterhawks. He even showed he could be an electric presence at the AHL level with seven goals in nine games last season, and was a highlight reel every night in the preseason. Whether that huge offensive upside lends itself to real NHL action right away remains to be seen, but he’ll get a chance this afternoon.

Of note, like with any prospect his age, is that Jarvis’ entry-level contract will not kick in until he plays in ten games this season. Should he hit that threshold, the first year will be burned and he will become a restricted free agent in 2024. If he plays fewer, that RFA summer would become 2025.

Snapshots: Eichel, Campbell, Sillinger

October 30, 2021 at 6:12 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 7 Comments

The Jack Eichel saga continues, though things are coming to a head according to several NHL insiders. Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff tweets that the Vegas Golden Knights are “well down the track” in Eichel talks with the Buffalo Sabres, but notes that there are still plenty of moving parts. Kevin Weekes of ESPN adds that the Calgary Flames are with the Golden Knights as potential destinations still, though he too notes that things remain “fluid and complex.”

It is important to remember that there are many factors involved here, including the Sabres’ own cap situation. Eichel is not on long-term injured reserve for Buffalo, and moving him off the cap would put them well below the lower limit. Any potential deal will likely have multiple players coming back, in addition to whatever draft picks are involved.

  • The Toronto Maple Leafs locked up Morgan Rielly yesterday, signing him before he got anywhere close to unrestricted free agency next summer. Another one of their pending UFAs, Jack Campbell, is playing very well for the club in the early going and setting himself up for a big payday. According to David Pagnotta of The Fourth Period, there have only been preliminary talks between the Maple Leafs front office and Campbell’s representatives, and that happened before the start of the season. The Maple Leafs of course signed Petr Mrazek to a three-year deal this summer, which carries a $3.8MM cap hit. Mrazek is playing tonight for the club as he returns from injury.
  • Cole Sillinger has been great for the Columbus Blue Jackets in the early going, stepping directly into the NHL after being selected 12th overall in this year’s draft. The question now is whether the Blue Jackets will keep him through the ten-game threshold, which would start the clock on his entry-level contract and burn its first year, or send him back to junior where he could dominate for the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL. Notably, as Brian Hedger of The Columbus Dispatch points out though, Sillinger is also actually eligible to play in the AHL this season because he spent last year with the USHL instead of playing in the COVID-shortened WHL campaign. Minor league games do not count toward that ten-game threshold, meaning the young forward could spend the year in professional hockey but not burn the first year of his ELC. With seven games played already, the Blue Jackets will have to make a decision on that front soon. One other thing to note for Sillinger is that sometimes, teams focus more on the 40-game threshold instead of ten. At that point, the season not only would burn the first year of his ELC, but it would also count toward Sillinger’s future UFA status.

Jack Hughes Out With Dislocated Shoulder

October 29, 2021 at 12:23 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 4 Comments

Oct 29: The Devils have announced that after a re-evaluation, it has been determined that there were no unforeseen issues with his shoulder injury. His recovery will be evaluated again in five weeks. That means the Devils will be without their young center for quite some time, but it appears as though surgery is still not on the table.

Oct 21: Jack Hughes will be out indefinitely after suffering a dislocated shoulder, but that’s actually good news for the New Jersey Devils. The young forward will not require surgery and has begun to rehab the injury. Hughes will be re-evaluated next week, meaning he will still miss a good chunk of time, but there was fear that surgery could take away a huge chunk of the season. He has been moved to injured reserve for the time being, which comes with a minimum of seven days.

Hughes, 20, looked like a wholly different player in his first game of the season, scoring two goals and dominating play whenever he was on the ice. He suffered the shoulder injury in his second match, when Seattle Kraken defenseman Jeremy Lauzon sent him sprawling into the boards.

If he has avoided major injury it’s a huge win for the Devils, who are off to a 2-0 start as they try to show the rest of the Metropolitan Division that the playoffs are not out of the question. One of the youngest teams in the league, New Jersey has just three regulars–Tomas Tatar, P.K. Subban, and Jonathan Bernier–over the age of 30. The latter, Bernier, is also dealing with a lower-body injury and will not dress tonight. The team has recalled Nico Daws from the AHL to serve as backup tonight.

NHL Will Not Discipline Kevin Cheveldayoff

October 29, 2021 at 11:02 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 38 Comments

The NHL has announced that they will not be handing out any discipline to Winnipeg Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff for his role in the 2010 Brad Aldrich situation with the Chicago Blackhawks. Cheveldayoff was an assistant general manager with the Blackhawks at the time, and one of the men present in the now-infamous meeting that took place on May 23, 2010.

Commissioner Gary Bettman released the following statement:

While on some level, it would be easiest to paint everyone with any association to this terrible matter with the same broad brush, I believe that fundamental fairness requires a more in-depth analysis of the role of each person. Kevin Cheveldayoff was not a member of the Blackhawks senior leadership team in 2010, and I cannot, therefore, assign to him responsibility for the Club’s actions, or inactions. He provided a full account of his degree of involvement in the matter, which was limited exclusively to his attendance at a single meeting, and I found him to be extremely forthcoming and credible in our discussion.

The investigative report, released earlier this week, has so far been followed by the resignations of Stan Bowman, Al MacIsaac, and Joel Quenneville.

Cheveldayoff released the following statement through the Jets:

First and most importantly, I want to express my support of and empathy for Kyle Beach and all he has had to endure since 2010. He was incredibly brave coming forward to tell his story. We can all use his courage as an inspiration to do a better job of making hockey a safer space for anyone who wants to play the game.

Further, I want to express my gratitude to the National Hockey League for the opportunity to meet with Commissioner Gary Bettman, in person, and directly share my role in and recollection of events while I was Assistant GM of the Chicago Blackhawks in 2010.

Cheveldayoff is returning to Winnipeg and will speak with the media on Monday.

Morgan Rielly Signs Eight-Year Extension

October 29, 2021 at 10:57 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 26 Comments

The Toronto Maple Leafs have locked up one of their leaders for a long time, announcing an eight-year extension for Morgan Rielly. The defenseman was in the final year of his current deal and will now be under contract through 2029-30. The deal carries an average annual value of $7.5MM, a raise on the $5MM cap hit he currently carries. Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic clarifies the trade protection in the deal, explaining that there is a no-movement clause for the entire extension, which also is extended through the rest of this season. An NMC does not actually necessarily include a no-trade clause, however, and in this case, Rielly has received (in addition to the NMC which prevents the player from being placed on waivers) a full no-trade in the first six years and a 10-team no-trade in the final two.  CapFriendly reports the full breakdown:

  • 2022-23: $4.0MM salary + $4.0MM signing bonus
  • 2023-24: $5.0MM salary + $5.0MM signing bonus
  • 2024-25: $10.0MM salary
  • 2025-26: $8.0MM salary
  • 2026-27: $6.0MM salary
  • 2027-28: $6.0MM salary
  • 2028-29: $6.0MM salary
  • 2029-30: $6.0MM salary

Rielly, 27, appears to have taken a discount to stay with the Maple Leafs, at least in terms of annual salary compared to some of the contracts that have been handed out in recent months. Since entering the league in 2013-14, Rielly rank 19th among defensemen in scoring with 309 points in 580 games and finished fifth in Norris Trophy voting in 2018-19. That year he posted 20 goals and 72 points, numbers that do seem to be a bit of an outlier given he has not cracked ten goals in any other season.

In fact, while Rielly’s offensive numbers have been consistent and his durability has been a huge positive, his true upside doesn’t appear to be quite as high as some believed in the past. Last season, for instance, Rielly finished the year with just eight more points than teammate Jake Muzzin, despite seeing drastically easier deployment and spending most of the year on the first powerplay unit.

Even with those questions around his potential upside, there’s little doubt that Rielly could have secured a higher AAV on the open market, had he decided to test free agency next summer. That would have come with offers of only seven years in length though, making it easy to see why he would want to ink the eight-year pact that could very well be a higher total than he could have secured in free agency. He also is now able to stay with the team he’s played with his whole career, and the one that he wears an “A” for as alternate captain.

Still, even at a relative cap hit discount, this is an extremely risky move for the Maple Leafs. The team is already dealing with huge cap hits for three forwards and are now adding $2.5MM per season to a defenseman that hasn’t been able to get them over the first-round hump to this point. Rielly is a core member of the team, but he’ll also turn 28 before this extension even kicks in and now eats up even more of their precious cap space.

It’s hard to argue that this contract gets the Maple Leafs any closer to winning a Stanley Cup, even if it does look like a reasonable amount for a player of Rielly’s skill level.
