Bruins Notes: Krejci, Orlov, Foligno

May 2, 2023 at 8:15 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan 12 Comments

The Boston Bruins season ended abruptly earlier this week. Their record regular season saw them win 65 games and set an NHL record, and they jumped out to a 3-1 series lead over the Florida Panthers before losing three straight and being eliminated in overtime of Game 7. You can expect players to need some time to decompress after such a shocking series loss, and David Krejci is one who will need to take some time to think about his future, according to Amalie Benjamin of NHL.com.

The 37-year-old center returned to the NHL after spending one season in Czechia and scored 16 goals and 56 points in 70 games for the Bruins. Benjamin reports that the veteran is already close to making a decision on next season but wants to ensure he takes the proper time before making an announcement. It should not be long before we hear from the pending free agent, but there are only two options as he will either return to the Bruins or retire.

  • Matt Porter of the Boston Globe reports Dmitry Orlov also is considering his options for next season already. The 31-year-old defenseman played his entire NHL career with the Washington Capitals before being dealt to the Bruins at the trade deadline. He fit in extremely well in Boston, but Porter suggests Orlov is looking to return to Washington next season when he becomes a free agent in July.
  • One player who sounds more ready to stay in Boston is veteran forward Nick Foligno. He just wrapped up the final year of his two-year contract with the Bruins but Porter reports Foligno is interested in returning. The 35-year-old winger feels he still has a lot left to offer and is a big part of the team. He would have to take a significant pay cut after earning $3.8MM the past two seasons and scoring twn goals and 26 points in 60 games, but he can still contribute in a fourth line role.

NHL Announces Frank J. Selke Trophy Finalists

May 2, 2023 at 7:30 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan 10 Comments

The NHL is announcing finalists for the annual NHL Awards this week, though they will not be handed out until late June between the NHL Draft and the opening of free agency. The finalists for the Hart Trophy will not be named until Friday, May 12, but the Frank J. Selke Trophy finalists have been announced already. This award goes to the league’s best defensive forward.

To no one’s surprise, Boston Bruins center Patrice Bergeron was one of the finalists. This marks the 12th consecutive season that Bergeron is a finalist for the Selke Trophy, as he will go down as perhaps the best defensive forward in hockey history. He has already won the award a record five times and is looking to add to that total with a sixth win. At age 37, Bergeron still remains one of the best penalty killing forwards and faceoff guys in the entire league.

Nico Hischier is also a finalist for the award, and this is his first time as a nominee. The New Jersey Devils center really broke through offensively this season with 31 goals and 80 points, but his defensive game is just as good, if not better, than what he does in the offensive zone. He wins over 53% of his draws, blocks shots, is the Devils top penalty killing forward and limits scoring chances against.

Mitch Marner of the Toronto Maple Leafs is also up for the award. Known mostly for his offensive wizardry, the Leafs continue to lean on Marner in defensive situations as well and he has risen to the occasion. Though it is rare for a winger to win the award, the Maple Leafs always limit chances against when Marner is on the ice, and he is among the best forwards in the league at taking the puck away from opponents while he has also become one of the most used penalty killers among forwards in the league.

Lady Byng Finalists Announced

May 2, 2023 at 7:00 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan 4 Comments

The National Hockey League is announcing award finalists this week as they begin to set the stage for the annual NHL Awards at the end of the season. Per a league release, we now know the three players that are up for the Lady Byng Award this season. This award is given out annually to the player who exhibited the most sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct while playing at a high level this season.

Jack Hughes of the New Jersey Devils is one of the finalists. He finished this season with 43 goals and 99 points in 78 games while putting up just six minutes in penalties. He was the team’s leading scorer and a key reason the Devils made it to the postseason for the first time since 2018. The Devils didn’t just sneak into the postseason either as they finished the regular season with a 52-22-8 record which gives them 112 points in the standings.

Anze Kopitar is also up for the Lady Byng this season. The 35-year-old center had another stellar season for the Los Angeles Kings, scoring 28 goals and 74 points in 82 games while playing great defensive hockey as well. He also had just two minor penalties proving his sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct which goes with his strong play on the ice. Kopitar won this award in 2016 and this is the 16th consecutive season he has received votes for the Lady Byng.

Brayden Point is the third finalist for the award after another strong season for the Tampa Bay Lightning. The 27-year-old center scored 51 goals and 95 points in 82 games and had just seven penalty minutes on the season.

Seattle Kraken Sign Ales Stezka

May 2, 2023 at 6:15 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan Leave a Comment

The Seattle Kraken have signed Ales Stezka to a one-year entry-level contract, according to a team release. The 26-year-old goaltender has been playing pro in Czechia and is coming off a stellar playoff run with HC Vitkovice where he has played for the past two seasons. His cap hit for next season will be $950K before he becomes a restricted free agent next offseason.

Stezka was originally drafted in the fourth round of the 2015 NHL Draft by the Minnesota Wild, but has not played an NHL game in his career. He has not played in North America at all since playing two seasons in the USHL with the Sioux Falls Stampede and the Chicago Steel from 2015-17.

The 6-foot-4 and 201 pound goalie had a 2.14 GAA and a .924 SV% last season in Czech Extraliga, the top pro circuit in that country. He was sensational in the postseason where he had a 1.24 GAA and a .960 SV% in 12 games, where his team remarkably only had a record of 6-6.

The Kraken will begin their second round playoff series tonight against the Dallas Stars, but this signing is for future depth at the position. With backup Martin Jones a free agent, the organization has only Philipp Grubauer and Chris Driedger signed in goal for next season.

Seattle will hope for a similar landing like Karel Vejmelka had in Arizona where he came over from Czechia in 2021 and surprisingly took over as their starting goaltender while posting respectable numbers on one of the weakest teams in the league.

Seattle Kraken Sign Jagger Firkus

April 27, 2023 at 7:59 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan 1 Comment

The Seattle Kraken have agreed to terms on a contract with one of their top prospects. Per a team release, Jagger Firkus has signed an entry-level contract with the club. The three-year agreement will begin next season and run through the 2025-26 season and comes with an annual cap hit of $950k.

The 18-year-old winger was a second-round pick of the Kraken in the 2022 NHL Draft. He scored 36 goals and 80 points in 66 games in 2021-22 for the Moose Jaw Warriors before being selected by the Kraken. This season, he bumped those numbers up to 40 goals and 88 points in 66 games and helped the Warriors push the Winnipeg Ice to six games in their second round series by scoring ten goals and 21 points in just ten WHL Playoff games.

Having only begun play in the NHL in 2021, the Kraken do not have a deep crop of prospects at their disposal, but Firkus is certainly among their best. He is a skilled offensive winger who can stickhandle in tight spaces, create offence for teammates with a creative pass and can also beat a goalie clean with a laser wrist shot. He looks to be a potential top six winger for the Kraken in the future.

That could take some time though, as Firkus is still eligible to return to Junior next season as a 19 year old. That is probably the case, which could slide this entry-level contract ahead another year and have it begin in the 2024-25 season which would be his first full pro season.

The Kraken are leading the Colorado Avalanche 3-2 in their first round series right now, and while the Warriors season is over and Firkus is eligible to join the team, that seems unlikely at this point and the timing of this contract is more about his Junior season ending and having time to focus on negotiating and not the Kraken looking for extra bodies in their current playoff run.

Injury Notes: Jeannot, Eyssimont, Lizotte

April 27, 2023 at 6:45 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan Leave a Comment

The Tampa Bay Lightning will look to avoid elimination in Game 5 against the Toronto Maple Leafs and will have to do so without their big trade deadline pickup. Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet reports that Tanner Jeannot was not on the ice when the team stepped out for warmup, and is dealing with an injury. The Lightning surprisingly traded first, second, third, fourth and fifth round draft picks as well as prospect Cal Foote for Jeannot in February.

Jeannot had one goal and four points in 20 regular season games for the Lightning after the trade, and has been held pointless in three postseason games. He was injured late in the regular season in what looked like a serious injury. Scott Mayfield of the New York Islanders fell on him and his right leg bent in such a way that a broken fibula seemed likely. Jeannot was back in the lineup shortly after, but is apparently dealing with something nagging as he will miss a potential elimination contest.

  • While Jeannot is out of the lineup, the Lightning did get some good news as Michael Eyssimont will return to the ice according to Mark Masters of TSN. Eyssimont was also acquired at the trade deadline this season and scored one goal and two points in 15 regular season games with the Lightning. He was injured in Game 1 of the postseason when Jake McCabe hit him in open ice but made a little head contact.
  • Out west, the Los Angeles Kings may get some reinforcements to their lineup during the three days off between Game 5 and 6 in their series with the Edmonton Oilers. Zach Dooley of LA Kings Insider reports Blake Lizotte has not played since Game 2 due to a lower-body injury. Lizotte practiced Thursday in a regular white jersey, signalling he is healthy and ready to return to the lineup. He is a key penalty killer on the Kings which is much needed against the dangerous power play of the Oilers, though there is no official confirmation that he will play in Game 6 just yet.

East Notes: Flyers, Schmidt, Phillips

April 26, 2023 at 8:30 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan 3 Comments

The Philadelphia Flyers are searching for a president of hockey operations to join the organization and Charlie O’Connor of The Athletic laid out the criteria the team is looking for to fill the role. O’Connor mentions that the team will be looking for a president of hockey operations to lead their management team while Daniel Briere, a relative youngster in the front office, will be the team’s general manager. With that in mind, the criteria the organization are using to fill the vacant position are experience, strong communication skills and a smart hockey mind. That last one should go without saying, but the team always wants someone who can communicate better with season ticket holders and fans, as well as someone with experience to help Briere along as he learns his new role as well.

O’Connor continues to list a handful of potential candidates who include Ray Shero, Doug Wilson, Scott Mellanby and Dave Poulin. Shero surely has the experience required thanks to his resume as an assistant general manager, general manager and senior advisor roles dating back to 1993. He is also the son of Fred Shero who coached the Flyers to their two Stanley Cup wins. Wilson was the general manager of the San Jose Sharks for nearly two decades giving him plenty of experience in this type of role. Mellanby has been working in front offices since 2012 when he was a director of player personnel and later an assistant general manager for the Montreal Canadiens. He also played for the Flyers for the first five years of his playing career. Poulin’s experience involved both working as the Toronto Maple Leafs vice president of hockey operations for five seasons as well as extensive experience working games as an analyst, which checks off the communication and experience boxes.

  • The Tampa Bay Lightning have reassigned one of their prospects, per a team release. Roman Schmidt saw his OHL season end when the Kitchener Rangers were eliminated from the postseason by the London Knights, but his season is not over yet as Schmidt will join the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch. The Lightning’s third round pick in the 2021 NHL Draft scored 28 points in 64 games and provided a big, physical, defensive presence for the Rangers using his 6-foot-5 inch and 216 pound body to win battles and protect his crease. The Crunch currently lead their Best-of-5 Division Semifinal series with the Rochester Americans 2-0.
  • Detroit Red Wings prospect Ethan Phillips has found a new college hockey team for the upcoming season. According to Mark Divver of NHL.com, Phillips will leave Boston University and transfer to Western Michigan for the 2023-24 campaign. The Red Wings fourth-round pick in 2019, Phillips scored four goals and 11 points in 29 games last season.

Edmonton Oilers Recall Trio Of Players

April 26, 2023 at 7:15 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan Leave a Comment

Per a team release, the Edmonton Oilers have added some depth to their playoff roster. With their AHL affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors, eliminated from the Calder Cup Playoffs, the Oilers are free to call up as many extras as they wish. They have chosen to recall defenseman Markus Niemelainen, defenseman Cam Dineen and forward Brad Malone to join the NHL club as depth options for the Oilers as they continue their playoff quest.

Niemelainen is a big, physical, defensive defenseman at 6-foot-6 who played 23 NHL games this season. He was a third-round pick of the Oilers in 2016 and has 43 career NHL games of experience. He played 30 AHL games with Bakersfield this season, scoring seven points while filling a shutdown defensive role for the team.

Dineen was a third-round pick of the Arizona Coyotes in the 2016 NHL Draft and was acquired by the Oilers with Nick Bjugstad at the trade deadline. More of an offensive defenseman, the 24 year old scored six goals and 47 points in 69 AHL games this season, but did not appear in any NHL contests in 2022-23. He did suit up for 34 games with the Coyotes in 2021-22, chipping in seven points but showing some defensive deficiencies as well.

Malone is a 33-year-old veteran forward who has 217 games of NHL experience. He played ten games with the Oilers this season and had 21 points in 41 AHL games with the Condors. Malone is a big winger at 6-foot-2 and 217 pounds and plays a phsyical style that could come in handy on a fourth line if a few injuries occur down the line for the Oilers.

Chances are this trio of players make up the infamous “black aces” group for the Oilers as they skate and practice with the team during the postseason but are unlikely to play any games. You never know what can happen with injuries and illness in a long playoff run so teams keep a handful of extra players around just in case, and Niemelainen, Dineed and Malone are that insurance policy for the Oilers.

Injury Notes: Bergeron, Carrier, Lomberg

April 26, 2023 at 6:22 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan Leave a Comment

Boston Bruins captain Patrice Bergeron will make his 2023 Stanley Cup Playoff debut in Game 5, according to Amalie Benjamin of NHL.com. The 37-year-old veteran center missed the first four games of the series with an undisclosed injury that was suffered in the Bruins final game of the regular season. The Bruins have held their own without an important piece of their lineup, as they have a 3-1 lead in the series and will look to eliminate the Florida Panthers and be the first team to advance to the second round.

Bergeron scored 27 goals and 58 points in 78 regular season games and is among the best defensive forwards to ever play the game. The Bruins are without center David Krejci, so having Bergeron return fills a huge hole down the middle of the lineup. After winning 65 regular season games, the Bruins are hoping to go on a long playoff run. A healthy Bergeron would go a long way in helping them in their quest for a Stanley Cup this spring.

  • Jesse Granger of The Athletic reports William Carrier is fully healthy and once again a full participant at practice for the Vegas Golden Knights. Carrier has not played since March 3 due to a lower-body injury. The 28-year-old winger scored 16 goals and 25 points in 56 regular season games for the Golden Knights, giving them scoring from a depth position in their lineup. Carrier will be an option in Game 5 as Vegas looks to eliminate the Winnipeg Jets.
  • Ryan Lomberg will not play Game 5 for the Florida Panthers according to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet. Lomberg has played an effective forechecking style using his speed and toughness to win puck battles, though he has been held pointless in the series thus far. The 28 year old had 12 goals and 20 points for the Panthers while playing every regular season game so it is unusual to see him out of the lineup. No official update was given, but Lomberg was hit hard in the face with a cross check in Game 4.

Snapshots: Castonguay, Flames GM Search, Canucks Free Agent Needs

April 24, 2023 at 7:30 pm CDT | by Ken MacMillan 2 Comments

In the latest edition of 32 Thoughts: The Podcast, Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet gives an update on a vacant general manager search. He had previously speculated that the Philadelphia Flyers GM search included discussing the possibility of speaking with Emilie Castonguay, who is the assistant general manager of the Vancouver Canucks.

Now, it sounds like Castonguay will not be going anywhere. While her name did come up as the Flyers cast a wide net to begin their hunt for a new GM, Castonguay is happy where she is currently and is not looking to move on from the Canucks to replace Chuck Fletcher in Philadelphia. This past season was her first full season with the Canucks after being hired midway through the 2021-22 season.

  • Pat Steinberg of Sportsnet 960 discusses the possibilities for the next Calgary Flames general manager and points out one very likely candidate. Steinberg says the team isn’t looking for a veteran retread for the job as they have Don Maloney in place as an experienced executive after naming him the team’s President of Hockey Operations. Steinberg discusses Flames assistant general manager Craig Conroy, the most likely candidate. The 51-year-old has been in the Flames front office since 2010, acting as a special assistant to the GM or the assistant GM.
  • Iain MacIntyre of Sportsnet breaks down the Vancouver Canucks biggest needs this offseason, pointing to a big hole down the middle. While the team has Elias Pettersson and J.T. Miller at center, there is really not an ideal third-line center on the team. He suggests the team will need to address this in free agency, possibly by signing Ivan Barbashev, Pius Suter or Max Domi, none of whom will come cheap. He also discusses the team’s need to move out a pricey winger like Brock Boeser or Conor Garland in order to create the cap space to fill that need down the middle.
