Conor Geekie Day-To-Day With Upper-Body Injury

The Tampa Bay Lightning have announced that forward Conor Geekie is listed as day-to-day with an upper-body injury. The 20-year-old went hard into the boards in the second period of last night’s game against the Florida Panthers and left for a brief period. He was able to return to action later on and finished out the game but did not dress for tonight’s second half of a back-to-back against the Panthers. The Lightning don’t play again until Saturday against the New York Rangers, so it is possible that Geekie doesn’t miss any game action, although the details of his injury are unknown.

The 11th overall pick in the 2022 NHL Entry Draft was a central part of a trade this summer that saw him dealt to the Lightning from the Utah Hockey Club, along with two draft picks and J.J. Moser in exchange for defenseman Mikhail Sergachev.

The trade has afforded Geekie an opportunity in Tampa Bay to play a depth role, something he has responded well to. In 31 games this year, the Strathclair, Manitoba native has posted five goals and five assists as well as 51 hits while averaging 12:30 of ice time per game.

Geekie remains a bit of a project for the Lightning, but he is certainly one of their best young players. The 6’4” forward has made good use of his size this season but still has a long way to go to improve his skating and his balance if he hopes to become a stand-out power forward at the NHL level.

Predators Place Cole Smith On IR

The Nashville Predators have placed forward Cole Smith on injured reserve with a lower-body injury. The 29-year-old is expected to miss the next 4-6 weeks. Although no specifics about his injury were given, it is likely related to the hard shot he took off the ankle in Saturday night’s contest against the Los Angeles Kings.

Smith is in his third full NHL season with Nashville after a four-year NCAA career and a couple of seasons in the AHL. The native of Brainerd, Minnesota has never been a prolific scorer but has been difficult to play against in his brief NHL career, playing the role of a disruptive forechecker as well as displaying a keen ability to get to the front of the net. He has also been a good penalty killer, utilizing his 6’3” frame to force turnovers.

Smith had a career year last season, tallying nine goals and 14 assists in 80 games, but has seen his offensive output dry up this year with just two goals and three assists in 34 games. Although that is a dramatic drop-off in production, it is likely due to his deployment which has seen him start just 20.7% of his even-strength shifts in the offensive zone compared to 35.1% last season.

Deployment aside, Smith has also seen his PDO (shooting percentage + save percentage) drop a full five points and his CF% has also dipped from 48% down to 45.8%.

Philadelphia Flyers Assign Emil Andrae To The AHL

The Philadelphia Flyers have assigned defenseman Emil Andrae to the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League. The move comes as somewhat of a surprise as the 22-year-old Andrae has been solid in 20 NHL games.

The 2020 second-round pick has a goal and four assists in the NHL this year, as well as a +3 plus/minus rating, 22 hits and 28 blocks. His underlying numbers are even better, particularly on the possession front where Andrae has posted a CF% of 54.2 at even strength. The Flyers have leaned on Andrae quite a bit during his time in the NHL, as he has played 19:18 per game which makes his demotion all that more surprising.

Despite being undersized at just 5’9” Andrae did a good job winning puck battles and using his small frame to gain body positioning on opponents. His edge work remains solid, particularly in the offensive zone where he has been able to walk the blue line and get pucks to the net at a good rate.

Andrae had sat for several games as a healthy scratch, with the Flyers preferring to use Yegor Zamula over him. Now that he is back in the AHL, Andrae will have an opportunity to continue his development, and he should receive a recall at some point in the new year

Sharks Begin Extension Talks With Fabian Zetterlund

The San Jose Sharks have reportedly begun talking about a contract extension with pending free agent forward Fabian Zetterlund (as per Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now). Peng describes the trade talks as “Casual” which likely means the two sides are in the early stages of negotiating.

The 25-year-old is in the final year of a two-year contract that carries a cap hit of $1.45MM and has been one of the better values in the NHL this season. Zetterlund is in his second full season with the Sharks after coming over in the Timo Meier trade from the New Jersey Devils at the 2023 Trade Deadline. He was originally drafted by the Devils in the third round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft and spent parts of two seasons in New Jersey before being sent West.

In his first full season with San Jose, Zetterlund was very productive offensively, tallying 24 goals and 20 assists in 82 games. His plus/minus was ugly at -34, however, that number was certainly magnified because he was playing for a team with a goal differential of -146.

This season, Zetterlund has picked up where he left off, registering 12 goals and 11 assists in his first 35 games, however, his plus/minus is a solid +6, which is more in line with a player that has a defense first skillset.

On the surface, the Zetterlund contract doesn’t look like a difficult one to make happen. However, San Jose has to consider how they will allocate salary cap space as their young stars approach their second contracts as well as how they can mix in high priced veterans to their salary cap structure.

Either way, Zetterlund should do well on his next contract and it will be interesting to see what type of term San Jose offers the Karlstad, Sweden native.

Blackhawks Activate Petr Mrazek Off IR, Drew Commesso Re-Assigned To AHL

The Chicago Blackhawks have reportedly activated goaltender Petr Mrazek off the injured reserve and re-assigned netminder Drew Commesso to the Rockford IceHogs of the American Hockey League (as per Charlie Roumeliotis of WGN Radio 720). Mrazek was considered close to a return on Tuesday but was not activated until this morning. The 32-year-old has been dealing with a left groin strain that has kept him out of action since December 7th.

Mrazek has dressed in 20 of Chicago’s 32 games to start the year and has put up a 7-11-1 record with a respectable .906 save percentage and 2.83 goals-against average. He dressed in 56 games for Chicago last season, posting a goals saved above expected of 1.6 (as per Money Puck), and a save percentage of .907, with an 18-31-4 record.

22-year-old Commesso started his first NHL game on December 14th for Chicago and played okay as he carried a shutout into the third period but ultimately lost the decision 4-1. He spent nearly two weeks in Chicago during Mrazek’s absence but saw just two appearances during that time. The former second-round pick now heads back to Rockford where he has put up pedestrian numbers in ten games this season with a 4-6 record and a 3.34 goals-against average as well as an .879 save percentage.

Chicago is at home tonight to face the Seattle Kraken, and we should know later today whether Mrazek will start or will be the backup.

Senators Recall Cole Reinhardt

The Ottawa Senators have announced that they’ve recalled forward Cole Reinhardt from the Belleville Senators of the American Hockey League. This recall marks the sixth time that the 24-year-old has been brought up from Belleville as he continues to rack up miles along Highway 7 and 401. Reinhardt plays under a two-way contract that pays him $95K in the AHL and $775K in the NHL. If he remains on the NHL roster until tomorrow, he will receive a nice little bonus over the holidays and earn his NHL salary until at least December 27th due to the NHL roster freeze.

Reinhardt is having a terrific season in Belleville, his fifth with the team. In 13 games thus far, he has almost matched all of last season’s production posting six goals and 10 assists. Last year was a difficult one for Reinhardt as he tallied just eight goals and 15 assists in 56 games. He’s never been much of an offensive threat, posting his finest offensive season during his last year in the Western Hockey League when he tallied 31 goals and 24 assists in 56 games.

In the NHL this season, Reinhardt has struggled in five games, turning the puck over three times and being dominated on the possession front with a CF% of 37%. However, he has been a physical presence with 14 hits and has shown a bit of an offensive pulse with a goal and an assist.

The Senators are in Calgary tonight to take on the Flames and it seems likely that Reinhardt will serve as the Senators extra forward for that contest, but we should know more later today.

Evening Notes: Gustavsson, Dahlin, Duclair

Joe Smith of The Athletic tweeted that Minnesota Wild goaltender Filip Gustavsson did not practice today with the team. Dylan Loucks of The Hockey News also reported that Gustavsson will miss his second consecutive game tomorrow night against the Florida Panthers. Marc-Andre Fleury will get the start with Jesper Wallstedt backing him up. Although Gustavsson will miss tomorrow night’s game, Joe Smith tweeted that Wild head coach John Hynes believes it will be a short-term injury.

Gustavsson has returned to form in 2024-25, bouncing back from a difficult stretch last season. Thus far this year, Gustavsson has posted a 14-5-3 record, along with a 2.24 goals-against average and a .922 save percentage in 22 appearances.

In other evening notes:

  • Paul Hamilton of WGR Sports Radio 550 reported today that Buffalo Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff is optimistic that the team will get defenseman Rasmus Dahlin back into the lineup very soon. Dahlin could practice as early as Thursday and depending on how that goes, he could suit up Friday when the Sabres take on Toronto. The 24-year-old has been dealing with a back issue that initially flared up in training camp and has missed seven straight games.
  • New York Islanders forward Anthony Duclair didn’t play tonight against Carolina but has been medically cleared to return and will do so whenever he is comfortable to return (as per Ethan Sears of the New York Post). Duclair has missed 28 straight games with a lower-body injury and has played just five times this season, tallying two goals and an assist in those games. The 29-year-old signed a four-year deal in the summer as a free agent and will likely occupy a top-six role for the Islanders when he does return.

Canucks Make Several Roster Moves

Vancouver Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin announced a series of roster moves today. Vancouver is sending defenseman Mark Friedman and goaltender Artūrs Šilovs to the Abbotsford Canucks of the American Hockey League and recalling forwards Linus Karlsson and Phillip Di Giuseppe.

Vancouver appears to be setting their roster in place before the upcoming NHL roster freeze. The Canucks could have waited until later in the week to shuffle things around, but their situation was a bit complicated by the fact that they play on the road tomorrow and Thursday.

Friedman returns to Abbotsford, where he has spent the bulk of his season, appearing in eight AHL games. The 28-year-old has shuttled back and forth throughout most of his professional career and will likely return to Vancouver later in the season when there is a need. The Toronto, Ontario native has dressed in 91 career NHL games over seven seasons.

Silovs has already set a career-high this season in NHL games played with seven, but has struggled immensely at the NHL level, posting a 1-4-1 record with a 4.11 goals against average and a .847 save percentage. The 23-year-old should have an opportunity to play a lot in the AHL as he tries to get his confidence back.

Karlsson and Di Giuseppe have earned call-ups that likely would have happened earlier this year, but those plans were thwarted by injuries. Karlsson played in the playoffs last season for the Canucks, dressing in two games. He earned that opportunity after tearing it up in the AHL last season with 23 goals and 37 assists in 60 games. He has had a solid albeit brief start to the AHL season, tallying five goals and an assist in seven games.

Di Giuseppe returns to the NHL after spending much of last season in Vancouver. The 31-year-old had five goals and five assists in 51 NHL games last season and also appeared in 11 NHL playoff games, lighting the lamp once and adding a helper. An early-season injury has limited the Maple, Ontario native to just four AHL games this year, but it appears he will get a shot at some NHL minutes.

Blackhawks Notes: Sorenson, Mrazek, Jones

Scott Powers of The Athletic writes about Chicago Blackhawks interim head coach Anders Sorensen. Powers says that the major change for Chicago has been on the forecheck where the team has deployed a more aggressive forecheck, rather than the conventional 1-2-2 that former head coach Luke Richardson liked to utilize. Sorensen’s structure does make the Blackhawks more prone to odd-man rushes, but it should allow the team’s offense to have more opportunities to put the puck in the net.

The Blackhawks’ defensive structure has also changed since the move to a new coach. Sorensen’s style has Chicago’s defensemen less concerned about getting back to defend and more apt to move up in the play to try and suppress opposing plays earlier as well as being involved more in the offensive zone.

In other Blackhawks notes:

  • Injured Chicago Blackhawks goaltender Petr Mrazek skated this morning before the team’s morning skate (as per Charlie Roumeliotis of WGN Radio 720). He has been dealing with a left groin strain but was called “Real close” by Sorensen when asked about a return to the lineup. The 32-year-old dressed in 20 of the Blackhawks’ first 27 games but hasn’t played since December 7th. He is not playing tonight but could return on Thursday when Chicago takes on the Seattle Kraken.
  • Blackhawks injured defenseman Seth Jones also skated today and was upgraded to day-to-day (as per Charlie Roumeliotis of WGN Radio 720). Jones isn’t playing tonight and has not played since November 14th, missing 14 games thus far with an injury to his right foot. Jones appears close to a return and, much like Mrazek, could do so on Thursday against Seattle. The 30-year-old was playing a ton before his injury, averaging 25:43 of ice time per game. Jones has dressed in 17 games this year, posting two goals and eight assists.

Evening Notes: Pegula, Gourde, Bannister

Elliotte Friedman reported on his 32 Thoughts podcast that Buffalo Sabres owner Terry Pegula met with the team in Montreal to discuss their recent woes. The Sabres are 0-7-3 in their last ten games and have had trade rumors swirling around the team as they are on the way to extending their 13-year playoff drought.

Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff is reporting that Pegula’s message to the Sabres was largely a positive one as he believes the solution to the teams problems are within the room and he said he has faith in general manager Kevyn Adams and head coach Lindy Ruff. Many believed that Pegula could be headed to Montreal to make major changes, however, that doesn’t appear to be the case, for now.

In other evening notes:

  • Seattle Kraken forward Yanni Gourde was in a regular contact jersey and fully participated in team practice today (as per Kraken contributor Alison Lukan). The Kraken are going to monitor the 33-year-old to see how he responds to the practice before they decide on whether or not he will play tomorrow night. Gourde has been dealing with a lower-body injury that has kept him out of the last two games, and unfortunately broke up a bit of a hot streak as he had 11 points in his last 14 games, after posting just three assists in his first 15 games of the season.
  • Former St. Louis Blues head coach Drew Bannister made his first public comments today since being fired by the team (as per St. Louis Today). Bannister said that he holds no resentment towards the organization because they were so good to him during his time there and he forged a lot of good relationships with people inside the club. Bannister was the head coach for just 76 games after spending seven years with the Blues in various roles and was replaced by former Bruins bench boss, Jim Montgomery.
