Panthers Sign Defensemen Tommy Cross And Ethan Prow

The Florida Panthers are re-tooling their blue line and that goes beyond simply adding Anton Stralman. The team also needs more talent among their depth options and have accomplished that by adding a pair of capable AHL defenders. The Panthers announced that Tommy Cross and Ethan Prow have both agreed to two-year, two-way contracts. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Cross, 29, was a Boston College standout and long-time Boston Bruins prospect before signing a one-year deal with the Columbus Blue Jackets last summer. Cross plays a sound defensive game, which allowed him to be a capable emergency option for Boston on a few occasions, but has mostly made his name on being a very offensively productive minor league defenseman for many years.

Prow, 26, enjoyed a breakout season at the right time, as he entered a contract year having yet to establish himself as a pro. In 74 AHL games last season with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, he recorded 50 points and showed that he can be an effective puck-mover at the pro level. He’s turned that into a nice opportunity to fight for NHL appearances with Florida.

Vancouver Canucks Sign Tyler Graovac, Zane McIntyre

The Canucks have had a singular focus for much of the day and that has been defense, signing Tyler Myers, Jordie Benn, and Oscar Fantenberg. However, the team has made some depth additions in other areas as well. Center Tyler Graovac has been signed to a one-year, two-way contract, as has goaltender Zane McIntyre. Both players spent all of last season in the AHL, but do have NHL experience.

Graovac, 26, is actually coming off an excellent season in the minor leagues, scoring 50 points in 65 games with the Stockton Heat. The seventh-round pick has carved out a nice professional career even if his NHL experience is limited, and should be a key player for the Utica Comets this season. In 62 NHL games he has just nine points meaning the Canucks shouldn’t be relying on him for any offense at that level, but a 6’5″ center with a minor-league scoring touch is never a bad thing to add to the organization.

McIntyre meanwhile will give the organization some more goaltending depth, though it’s not clear exactly how things will shake out at this point. The Canucks now have six goaltenders in the organization, including top prospect Michael DiPietro who will need ample playing time to continue his development. The 26-year old McIntyre played eight games for the Boston Bruins in 2016-17, but has spent the last two seasons entirely in the AHL. This past one wasn’t particularly good, though he still is an experienced hand that can help fill out the organizational chart.

Flames Sign Brandon Davidson, Byron Froese

After adding goalie Cam Talbot earlier, the Calgary Flames have addressed their depth at the other two positions, signing defenseman Brandon Davidson and forward Byron Froese, per team releases. Both veteran players have signed one-year, two-way contracts with NHL AAV’s of $700K.

Both Davidson, 27, and Froese, 28, have bounced around the hockey world of late and are hoping to find more stability by landing in Calgary. Davidson, an Alberta native, has spent two stints with the Edmonton Oilers, as well as time with the Montreal Canadiens, New York Islanders, and Chicago Blackhawks in the last four years alone. Davidson has struggled to score at the NHL level, but has shown that he can be a dominant physical force at times. Froese, from nearby Manitoba, did not see any NHL action last year, but was traded nonetheless from the Montreal Canadiens to the Philadelphia Flyers. It was the second time in three years he had been traded and Philly became his fourth team in that span, joining Montreal, Tampa Bay, and Toronto. Like Davidson, Froese has really never been more than a part-time player at the highest level due to concerns about his offensive ability. However, he has established himself as a solid two-way forward.

Given the depth that the Flames have on both the blue line and up front, the odds are the Davidson and Froese will spend much of next season with the AHL’s Stockton Heat. However, their NHL experience and reliable defensive ability should make them top call-up options for Calgary when injuries strike.

Dallas Stars Add Tanner Kero, Re-Sign Reece Scarlett

The Dallas Stars continue an impressive day that already includes adding decorated veterans Joe Pavelski, Corey Perry, and Andrej Sekera by inking a pair of depth players. The team has announced a two-way contract with forward Tanner Kero, as well as defenseman Reece Scarlett. Both contracts carry a minimum NHL cap hit of $700K.

Kero, 26, has signed a two-year deal following a breakout season with the AHL’s Utica Comets. In 72 NHL games with the Chicago Blackhawks, Kero was primarily used in a bottom-six role and his offense was somewhat limited. After a move to the Vancouver Canucks, Kero spent the whole season in the minors, but rediscovered his offensive touch with 57 points in 67 games. A versatile player who can be a top AHL scorer, but able to slot in anywhere in the NHL lineup, Kero could be a valuable asset for Dallas.

Scarlett, 26, is entering his third season with the Stars organization, but it may not seem that way. Scarlett was acquired from the Florida Panthers in a 2017 trade and played in 44 games with the AHL’s Texas Stars that season. However, he failed to produce the same offensive numbers as he had in his previous AHL seasons. Then, after re-signing with the team last summer, an injury cost him all but one game last season. Despite seemingly having a lot to prove after two seasons with the Stars, Dallas clearly likes the potential that Scarlett can bring on the blue line.

L.A. Kings To Sign Joakim Ryan, Martin Frk

The Los Angeles Kings did not take part in the early rush of signings this afternoon, but they won’t leave day one of free agency without making a mark. Team insider Jon Rosen writes that the team has agreed to terms on one-year contracts with two young unrestricted free agents, defenseman Joakim Ryan and forward Martin Frk. He adds that it will be a one-way, $725K deal for Ryan and a two-way, $700K deal for Frk.

Ryan should be familiar to Kings fans as a former member of the rival San Jose Sharks. The Sharks declined to extend a qualifying offer to the 26-year-old, who had played in over 100 games with the team over the past two seasons, not including an impressive run as a starter in this year’s playoffs. While Ryan doesn’t excel at any one aspect, he plays a complete game and should compete for consistent ice time with L.A., even though the team has a number of possibilities on the blue line.

Frk, for all of his shortcomings, could be a nice value add on a two-way deal and minimum contract. The 25-year-old right wing is a talented shooter who has yet to find the right fit in the NHL. If he finds chemistry on the Kings, he could be a consistent goal-scoring threat. If not, he’s simply an experienced name to add to AHL depth chart.

Boston Bruins Announce Several Signings

While the Boston Bruins garnered some attention early on today with a long-term extension for defenseman Connor Clifton and the signings of young power forward Brett Ritchie and third-string goalie Maxime Lagace, the team was quietly working through a number of other deals that insiders failed to pick up on. The team has announced seven signings: extensions for Clifton and Ryan Fitzgerald, one-way contracts for Ritchie and Par Lindholm, two-way contracts for Lagace and Brendan Gaunce, and an AHL contract for defenseman Josiah Didier.

Outside of Clifton and Ritchie, the biggest news is the addition of Lindholm, who signed a two-year deal with an AAV of $850K. Although Lindholm, 27, just finished his first NHL season after a long career in Sweden, the Bruins got a good look at him as a member of the rival Toronto Maple Leafs. Lindholm recorded 12 points in 61 games for Toronto, but was held to just one point in four regular season games and two postseason games for the Winnipeg Jets following a late-season trade. However, defense is more Lindholm’s game anyway, as he proved to be a good physical presence and proved to be adept at blocking shots and creating turnovers. Lindholm is a good fourth-line depth option and penalty kill possibility for the Bruins, who lost Noel Acciari to the Florida Panthers, but replace much of the same ability at half the price.

Gaunce, 25, became a UFA after he was not tendered a qualifying offer by the Vancouver Canucks. A 2012 first-round pick, the Canucks expected more offense out of the forward, who instead recorded just 15 points in 117 NHL games through four seasons with the team. Last year, Gaunce played all but three games in the AHL. At his point, Gaunce is a player who uses his size and speed to play a physical, up-tempo style, but lacks the skill to play a scoring role in the NHL. At best, Gaunce will challenge Lindholm to be the next man up on the fourth line in Boston, and would be an affordable piece at $700K, but at worst he has a high floor of being a hard-working and experienced minor league presence that will make his Providence teammates better.

One such teammate is Fitzgerald, who returns to the team on a one-year, $700K deal, coming in below his qualifying offer. Fitzgerald has shown a well-rounded game and consistent production in two years with the Providence Bruins, as he did in four years at Boston College. The homegrown product comes from hockey bloodlines and plays a smart game. There’s still some question of whether the skill is enough to get to the NHL, though. Fitzgerald will still be searching for his Boston debut this coming season.

Another Providence addition is Didier, who strengthens a talented, but shallow AHL blue line for the Bruins. Didier is coming off a career-best offensive season for the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers, despite only being a part-time player for the Calder Cup champs. It’s unclear how much of a role he will play in Providence, but it’s a risk-free investment in a big, experienced defender by the Bruins.

Arizona Coyotes Sign Ness, Miele, Bennett

The Arizona Coyotes already made their big splash this off-season, acquiring Phil Kessel, so it comes as little surprise that the team made one unassuming announcement about three players signed to two-way contracts. Defenseman Aaron Ness has signed a two-year deal, as has forward Andy Miele, while forward Beau Bennett has signed a one-year deal. No financial terms have been disclosed.

Ness, 29, is the only one of the trio who spent last season in North America. A depth piece for the Washington Capitals, and before that the New York Islanders, Ness has played in 47 career NHL games and can be a useful minor league piece in case of emergency. The Coyotes have great depth on the blue line, but the team will be happy to let Ness, who scored a career-high 55 points last year with the AHL’s Hershey Bears, play a key role with the Tuscon Roadrunners while acting as deep option should injuries strike at the top level.

Miele, 31, begins his second stint with the Coyotes organization after spending the past two seasons abroad. A player with incredibly impressive numbers in the AHL, Miele branched out to the European ranks in search of a greater role. He enjoyed back-to-back strong seasons, first in the Swedish Hockey League and last year in the KHL, but appears ready to try his hand in the NHL again. Miele has only 15 NHL games to his credit, but he and the ’Yotes hope that his time overseas has further developed his game to the point that he can contribute in Arizona.

Bennett, 27, was limited to just five games with the KHL’s Dinamo Minsk last season, his first outside North America, but that didn’t stop the Coyotes from taking a chance on him. Now in his fourth NHL stop, Bennett is looking to get back to being a regular in the league, as he was in his first five pro seasons. The 2010 first-round pick has skated in 200 NHL games, recording 64 points, and enjoyed the best season of his career just a few years ago in 2016-17 with the New Jersey Devils. If GM John Chayka and company see the residual upside in Bennett, he could be an intriguing option for the Coyotes this seaosn.

Pittsburgh Penguins Sign Warsofsky, Agozzino

The Pittsburgh Penguins have inked a pair of depth players, signing David Warsofsky and Andrew Agozzino to two-year, two-way contracts. Both deals will carry an average annual value of $700K at the NHL level. The minor league players were teammates last season with the Colorado Eagles. Assistant GM Bill Guerin released a statement on the deals:

David and Andrew are two guys that are going to provide great depth for our organization. They are both leaders that can help mentor some of our younger players. If there are injuries or trades, you need guys like David and Andrew, who have both NHL and AHL experience, to be able to come in and contribute. We’re lucky to get two guys with great experience in this role, and expect both of them to push to make the NHL roster out of training camp.

Golden Knights Sign Patrick Brown

The Vegas Golden Knights are adding some depth up front, inking Patrick Brown to a two-year contract, per TSN’s Darren Dreger. The deal holds a minimum $700K NHL salary in both seasons, but is a two-way deal in year one and a one-way deal in year two. Brown is set to join recently acquired Nicolas Roy as members of the defending champion Charlotte Checkers of the AHL now pushing for play time in Las Vegas.

The 27-year-old Brown will be able to replace a lot of the lost talent that the Calder Cup finalist Chicago Wolves lost. Coincidentally, it was Brown’s team that helped Carolina to winning the Calder Cup title, defeating Chicago in the finals. However, the Wolves will be without several key players including AHL MVP Daniel Carr as well as Tomas Hyka and Brooks Macek, who are both expected to return to Europe.

Brown posted a career-high 19 goals for the Charlotte Checkers and while he didn’t get into a regular season game this year for the Hurricanes, he did find himself on the playoff roster, playing in all eight games, although he didn’t tally a point. However, he provided some physical needs to help some of the injured Carolina players.

Minnesota Signs Forwards Luke Johnson, Gabriel Dumont

The Wild have added four forwards already today, announcing the depth additions of Luke Johnson and Gabriel Dumont. The duo sign matching two-year, two-way deals worth the minimum $700K at the NHL, although Dumont is set to make a higher AHL salary than Johnson.

The 24-year-old Johnson has showed some promise as he has continually improved in his three years in the AHL with the Chicago Blackhawks’ affiliate, the Rockford IceHogs. He finally broke out with an 18-goal season there in just 53 games and got some ice time with Chicago, playing in 15 games, but failed to score a goal and only registered a point, averaging just 10:49 of ATOI. He will compete for a fourth-line spot, but is more likely going to end up with the Iowa Wild for another season.

The 28-year-old Dumont bounced around Montreal, Tampa Bay and Ottawa as he struggled to crack an NHL lineup. Tampa Bay eventually claimed him back from the Senators in 2018 and he was immediately sent to the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL where he played since then. Minnesota is likely expecting him to join Johnson with Iowa to provide some veteran depth for their younger players.
