Los Angeles Kings Looking For Left-Shot Defenseman

February 2, 2022 at 11:31 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 13 Comments

Before the season began, very few prognosticators expected the Los Angeles Kings to be within a few points of the Pacific Division crown at this point. More than halfway through the season, the Kings are just four points behind the Vegas Golden Knights and sitting in a divisional playoff spot with a 23-16-7 record. Their group has been led by a rejuvenated Drew Doughty a still-elite Anze Kopitar and a few new characters, like Viktor Arvidsson and Phillip Danault.

If there’s something the group could use, it’s a left-shot defenseman, writes Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet in his latest 32 Thoughts column. The scribe asked Kings GM Rob Blake directly about Jakob Chychrun, but couldn’t coax an answer out of him despite the obvious fit. Chychrun’s name has been bandied about by Kings fans ever since the Arizona Coyotes made it clear he was available, given how well he’d fit into a top-four role to support Doughty and the otherwise rather inexperienced defense group.

In Sunday’s game, for instance, the Kings had a back end that included Tobias Bjornfot (81 career games going in), Sean Durzi (27), Austin Strand (15), and Jacob Moverare (1). Olli Maatta was the only defenseman other than Doughty with even a full season under his belt, and his future with the Kings is murky at best. The 27-year-old is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the year and has been rather pedestrian since arriving in 2020. Chychrun, with a contract that lasts another few years, would make obvious sense but he’s a pricey target and not the only left-shot available.

Ben Chiarot’s name has been thrown around in trade talks for months, and he would represent the “size” element that the Kings are looking for. The Montreal Canadiens defender stands 6’3″ and is one of the most physical defensemen in the league in front of the net. He also obviously has familiarity with Danault, as the two were often on the ice at the same time against the opponent’s best players during Montreal’s playoff run last year.

The Seattle Kraken will have to soon make a decision on what to do with Mark Giordano, who is a pending free agent but also the team’s first captain. Kraken GM Ron Francis told Ryan S. Clark of The Athletic that they’ll have a face-to-face talk with Giordano at some point in the near future to determine what he wants to do. The 38-year-old represents a much different option than someone like Chiarot, but would add a ton of experience to a young defensive group in Los Angeles.

One other interesting thing that Blake noted to Friedman is that the team is comfortable going into next season with Jonathan Quick and Cal Petersen both on the roster, despite an expensive extension kicking in for the latter. Combined, they would carry a cap hit of $10.8MM, but Blake notes that because of some entry-level bargains on the roster, they’d be able to afford it for the one year remaining on Quick’s deal.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 02/02/22

February 2, 2022 at 10:01 am CDT | by Gavin Lee 2 Comments

What better time to dissolve the taxi squads once and for all than Groundhog Day. The daily cycle of moving players in and out of the taxi squad should come to an end after today, provided that history doesn’t repeat at some point in the future. After the five games on the schedule tonight, taxi squads will be no more. For many teams–those who don’t have a game today–that time has already arrived and several player transactions were needed. As always, we’ll keep track of all the shuffling right here.

Atlantic Division

  • The Ottawa Senators have sent Lassi Thomson, Mark Kastelic, Cole Reinhardt, and Egor Sokolov back to the AHL, though several will likely be back after the All-Star break. The Senators were put down by the New York Islanders last night and will still be focused on development in the second half as they try to find a way to compete next season.
  • The Boston Bruins have sent Steven Fogarty, Oskar Steen, and Jeremy Swayman back to Providence for the time being, though the latter two should be expected to rejoin the big club after the break. Of course, that is sort of dependent on the health of Tuukka Rask, whose comeback attempt has not gone smoothly to this point.
  • After the dissolving of the taxi squad, the Tampa Bay Lightning have sent Fredrik Claesson, Darren Raddysh, and Cole Koepke to the AHL. Koepke, 23, has yet to make his NHL debut but does have 20 points in 28 games with the Syracuse Crunch.
  • The Buffalo Sabres have not only sent Aaron Dell to the minors, but he’ll be joined by Brandon Biro, Oskari Laaksonen, Brett Murray, JJ Peterka, Arttu Ruotsalainen, Jimmy Schuldt, Peyton Krebs, and Mattias Samuelsson in Rochester. The Americans have been devastated by injuries and recalls all season, so this will be a nice little reprieve while the NHL is on break. Krebs especially out of this group likely won’t be there long.

Metropolitan Division

  • Morgan Barron, Jonny Brodzinski, Adam Huska, and Nils Lundkvist have all been sent to the AHL by the New York Rangers, no longer in need of a taxi squad. Several of these names could see play down the stretch for New York, but for now, will be limited to action with the Hartford Wolf Pack.
  • After Vitek Vanecek left last night’s game, the Washington Capitals have recalled Pheonix Copley to the taxi squad. With a game tonight against the Edmonton Oilers, the Capitals have the taxi squad active for one more day.
  • The Pittsburgh Penguins have returned Kasper Bjorkqvist, Michael Chaput, Pierre-Olivier Joseph, and Juuso Riikola to the minor leagues. With Chad Ruhwedel and Brian Dumoulin both ending up in the lineup last night, there wasn’t a need for Riikola after all.
  • Colton White has been reassigned to the AHL by the New Jersey Devils, with Dougie Hamilton likely back after the All-Star break. The Devils were picked apart by the Maple Leafs last night and appear as though they could be sellers at the deadline after a disappointing first half.

Central Division

  • The Winnipeg Jets have assigned Mikhail Berdin, Declan Chisholm, Leon Gawanke, Ville Heinola, Johnathan Kovacevic, Mikey Eyessimont, and Kristian Reichel to the Manitoba Moose, where they can continue to play over the All-Star break. Heinola especially seems likely to have a role at some point with Winnipeg later this season, but for now, he’s headed back to the AHL.
  • The Dallas Stars have returned Riley Damiani and Anton Khudobin to the minor leagues after they finished their pre-All-Star schedule last night. The Stars are still within striking distance in the Central but have to deal with four excellent teams sitting ahead of them.
  • As expected, the Minnesota Wild have recalled Matt Boldy and Connor Dewar from the taxi squad ahead of tonight’s game. Boldy in particular is expected to stay with the Wild the rest of the season, though his waiver-exempt status could be taken advantage of by bouncing him up and down between games.

Pacific Division

  • The Seattle Kraken have assigned Joey Daccord back to the Charlotte Checkers, where he’s having a strong season in the AHL. The 25-year-old netminder has a .925 save percentage in 14 minor league appearances. Later on, they sent Max McCormick back to the AHL as well.
  • Ahead of their game tonight, the Los Angeles Kings have recalled Austin Strand and Christian Wolanin from the taxi squad, while loaning Rasmus Kupari to the AHL. Kupari, 21, has just nine points in 37 games for the Kings this season.
  • The Vegas Golden Knights have reassigned Kaedan Korczak, Daniil Miromanov, Logan Thompson, and Brayden Pachal to the AHL, now that they are on break and no longer have a taxi squad.
  • The San Jose Sharks, who don’t play again until February 14, have sent Ryan Merkley, Adam Raska, Zachary Sawchenko, and Jasper Weatherby to the AHL. The San Jose Barracuda play tonight, tomorrow and next Friday, all games which this group could jump into while the Sharks are on break.
  • The Anaheim Ducks have reassigned Lukas Dostal, Jacob Larsson, Greg Pateryn, Vinni Lettieri, and Danny O’Regan to the AHL after dissolving their taxi squad. Dostal, the team’s prized goaltending prospect, has a .929 save percentage through his first three NHL appearances, allowing just six goals on 84 shots.

Tage Thompson, Rasmus Asplund Healthy For Buffalo

February 1, 2022 at 8:30 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 4 Comments

The Buffalo Sabres are getting two big pieces back for tonight’s tough tilt against the Vegas Golden Knights, as the team tweeted before game time that forwards Tage Thompson and Rasmus Asplund are ready to return to the lineup.

Thompson missed the team’s last game, a 4-1 loss to Colorado, with an undisclosed injury that he sustained the night before in Arizona. Asplund was placed in COVID protocol, rendering him unavailable for the games against Arizona and Colorado.

One of the best stories in Buffalo this season is Thompson, who’s made the leap to potentially a true top-nine piece as the Sabres build down the line after being shifted to center by head coach Don Granato. He’s second on the team with 14 goals and has 29 points in 40 games. He’ll center the top line tonight between two players looking to have revenge games in Peyton Krebs and Alex Tuch.

Asplund, a second-round selection in 2016, has also now made the leap to full-time NHLer. He’s been a good two-way presence in the team’s bottom six, and he’s registered a respectable 16 points in 42 games (a 31-point pace).

Washington’s Vitek Vanecek Leaves Game, Emergency Backup On Bench

February 1, 2022 at 7:12 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 4 Comments

Washington Capitals goaltender Vitek Vanecek will be out for the remainder of the team’s game tonight against the Pittsburgh Penguins with an upper-body injury, the team announced. Taxi squad goalie Hunter Shepard, who was in the building, is on the bench as the emergency backup.

Vanecek collided with Penguins forward Kasperi Kapanen in the crease during the first period, in what looked like a helmet-to-helmet collision. Both Kapanen and Vanecek initially stayed in the game, but Vanecek was pulled shortly after, presumably by a concussion spotter, in favor of Ilya Samsonov.

The 26-year-old Czech netminder has split time with Samsonov this season, posting a 10-6-5 record and .916 save percentage to go along with two shutouts. Tonight was his 23rd start of the season. He’s been the better of the two goalies, however, and it will be a huge blow to the Capitals if he misses time.

If Vanecek does miss time, the team will likely call up Zachary Fucale from Hershey. In his first four NHL games this season, he has a .924 save percentage.

Ruhwedel, Borgen Enter COVID Protocol

February 1, 2022 at 5:34 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 1 Comment

5:34 pm: It turns out that it was likely a false positive that put Ruhwedel on the COVID protocol list. The Penguins defenseman is off protocol the same day he entered, and is available for tonight’s game against Washington.

11:04 am: In the coming days, players entering the COVID protocol will become much less common. The league has amended its procedures to no longer require daily testing for fully vaccinated individuals, and has removed the testing requirement for close contacts. Those are set to come into effect following each club’s final game before the All-Star break, however, meaning that for today and tomorrow, things are business as normal.

It’s not surprising then to see two more players enter the protocol today. The Seattle Kraken have announced that Will Borgen is now in it, meaning he’ll be unavailable for the team’s final pre-All-Star games this week. Pittsburgh Penguins head coach Mike Sullivan also announced to reporters including Seth Rorabaugh of the Tribune-Review that Chad Ruhwedel is in the protocol and unavailable tonight.

In Borgen’s case, it’s unfortunate timing given he had started to find a home in the Kraken lineup. The 25-year-old defenseman played just a hair under 16 minutes on Sunday against the New York Rangers, his 15th game of the season. One of the interesting expansion draft selections given how little NHL experience he had with the Buffalo Sabres, Borgen signed a two-year, one-way contract with the Kraken in August and was expected to be a full-time option for the club. Now halfway through the season and he has just a handful of games under his belt after the team loaded up on other defensemen that have sat ahead of him on the depth chart.

For Ruhwedel, it couldn’t come at a worse time, given how he has finally been a regular in the Pittsburgh lineup. The 31-year-old veteran has never played more than 44 games in a single season but has already suited up 41 times this year, as the Penguins continue to deal with injuries to various players. Even tonight, the team has announced that Brian Dumoulin is a game-time decision due to “wear and tear” meaning there may have been even more ice time up for grabs. Instead, he’ll have to miss and likely give Juuso Riikola–recalled to the taxi squad this morning–a chance to get back into the NHL lineup.

New York Islanders Activate Ryan Pulock From LTIR

February 1, 2022 at 4:36 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

It’s a joyous day on the Island, as the New York Islanders activated defenseman Ryan Pulock off long-term injured reserve today, as reported by Newsday’s Andrew Gross. Defenseman Robin Salo, who does not require waivers, is no longer listed on the roster, likely meaning that’s he’s been assigned to the AHL’s Bridgeport Islanders or to the taxi squad.

Pulock, like many of the Islanders players, had a rocky start to the beginning of the season. Normally the team’s best offensive defenseman, he had just two points in 12 games before landing on long-term injured reserve with a lower-body injury.

What was originally supposed to be five weeks turned into two and a half months, forcing the Islanders’ depth on defense to be challenged. Players like Noah Dobson revelled in the opportunity, as he’s playing the best hockey of his career. Now, against the Ottawa Senators tonight, the Islanders will be able to ice a fully healthy defense for the first time since the first month of the season.

Pulock’s low production at the beginning of the year was likely just a spell of bad luck fuelled by low shooting percentages across the team. Albeit in a small sample size, many advanced analytics don’t suggest any downturn in play from Pulock.

Under contract until 2030 with an eight-year, $49.2MM contract that kicks in next season, Pulock will get a chance to aid in what needs to be a massive push from the Islanders at this point to make the playoffs. The team is 6-4-0 in their last 10 games but is still a game under a .500 pace, and even with five games in hand on Boston, the current second Wild Card holder, they’re 17 points out of a playoff spot.

It’s unclear as to where Pulock will fit back in the lineup, but if he’s reunited with former partner Adam Pelech, it will mark the return of one of the strongest two-way defense pairings in the league.

Nashville Predators, Tampa Bay Lightning Trade AHL Forwards

February 1, 2022 at 4:11 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 1 Comment

The Tampa Bay Lightning have completed their second minor trade within a matter of hours, sending center Jimmy Huntington to the Nashville Predators in exchange for center Anthony Richard.

Earlier in the day, the Bolts sent Alexey Lipanov to the Dallas Stars, acquiring Tye Felhaber in return.

Huntington is a 23-year-old undrafted forward with no NHL experience yet. However, he’s put up somewhat decent numbers with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch over the past few seasons. After a tough professional debut in 2019-20 with just three assists in 33 games with Syracuse, he’s scored 11 goals, 16 assists, and 26 points in 55 games in the following two seasons.

Richard actually has some NHL experience to his name. The 100th overall selection in 2015 by Nashville is now 25 years old, and with his AHL numbers starting to plateau, the organization was ready to move on. Richard has seven goals and five assists for 12 points in 31 games with the AHL’s Milwaukee Admirals this year. He’s still searching for his first NHL point, with his two games of experience coming in 2018-19 and 2019-20.

Snapshots: Arizona, Mittelstadt, Verbeek

February 1, 2022 at 3:07 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee 7 Comments

The Arizona Coyotes’ proposed plan to spend the next few years in an Arizona State University facility has drawn plenty of concern across the hockey world, but perhaps none more pointed than the quotes from other NHL executives in Sean Shapiro’s newest piece for The Athletic. Shapiro spoke to executives from nine organizations, who, under an agreement that their identities would remain anonymous, had some pretty harsh words for the ASU plan.

Several of them called it “embarrassing” according to Shapiro, who delves into the financial impact that playing at a small rink, including in-ice and board advertisement revenue that could be at risk. The idea to play at the ASU facility currently seems the most likely outcome of the Coyotes’ search for a temporary home, but they are going to have to face very public criticism in the meantime.

  • Casey Mittelstadt will consult with a surgeon over next steps after leaving Sunday’s game in pain, according to John Vogl of The Athletic. The young forward already went under the knife in December for an undisclosed upper-body injury and only returned to the lineup on January 25. He has played in seven games this season, recording a single goal and two points. If he is forced to have another surgery, it looks like this could be a lost season for the 23-year-old, who signed a three-year, $7.5MM deal in September. Since being selected eighth overall in 2017, Mittelstadt has recorded 63 points in 162 NHL games.
  • Pat Verbeek appears to be the frontrunner for the Anaheim Ducks vacant general manager position, as Frank Seravalli of Daily Faceoff names him “the man to beat.” Verbeek, who has served as an assistant general manager under Steve Yzerman in both Tampa Bay and Detroit, played over 1,400 regular season games in the NHL and won the Stanley Cup with the Dallas Stars in 1999. He sits 72nd on the all-time points list with 1,062 and has been linked to potential GM openings for several years.

Dallas Stars, Tampa Bay Lightning Complete Minor Trade

February 1, 2022 at 12:40 pm CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired Tye Felhaber from the Dallas Stars, sending Alexey Lipanov back the other way. Lipanov will report to the Texas Stars of the AHL, while Felhaber is heading to the Orlando Solar Bears of the ECHL.

While neither of these players is expected to make a big impact at the NHL level, it is notable that the Lightning have a history of taking undrafted, high-scoring CHL players and turning them into valuable assets. That describes Felhaber exactly, who had a 59-goal, 109-point season for the Ottawa 67’s in 2018-19 as an overage player.

Undrafted, he’s spent the last few seasons in the Stars minor league system and hasn’t been able to come anywhere near repeating those offensive numbers. He has just two goals in 14 games this season and eight in total over his Texas career.

Lipanov meanwhile was a third-round pick of the Lightning in 2017 but has spent most of his career to this point in the ECHL. The 22-year-old forward is in the final season of his entry-level contract and appears to be a likely candidate to go unqualified as an RFA this summer.

After some interesting performances internationally for Russia that led to his high draft position, Lipanov never really found his footing in the OHL, registering just 30 points in 61 games during his final season there. Last season he did record 15 points in 33 games in Russia’s VHL, but hasn’t even recorded a single goal this year in nine appearances in the Lightning minor league system.

Eric Staal Named Captain Of 2022 Canadian Olympic Squad

February 1, 2022 at 11:08 am CDT | by Gavin Lee Leave a Comment

Hockey Canada has announced the leadership group for the upcoming Olympic Games, with Eric Staal the obvious choice as captain of the club. He’ll be joined by David Desharnais and Maxim Noreau as alternates.

Staal, 37, has not only appeared in the Olympics previously–he went when the NHL was still participating. A member of the 2010 gold medal-winning squad in Vancouver, the veteran forward is already a member of the exclusive Triple Gold Club, with Olympic gold, World Championship gold, and a Stanley Cup championship. This is the second time he’s served as captain for Team Canada, having also worn the “C” in 2013 at the Worlds.

With the scattered talent that’s on the team, Staal was always going to be the captain as he brings more experience than anyone else. He very well could skate with someone nearly two decades his junior, if Mason McTavish can work his way up the lineup. He’ll have another veteran forward to lean on either way though, as Desharnais gets an “A” after three excellent years playing in Switzerland. The 35-year-old had a strong NHL career of his own, racking up 282 points in 524 career games.

Noreau, a player that might be much less familiar to NHL fans given he played just six games with the Minnesota Wild more than a decade ago, is the other alternate after a long successful career in Switzerland. He’s also a returning member of the 2018 Olympic group, where he also wore an “A” en route to a bronze medal. The 34-year-old defenseman should likely play a role on the powerplay given his offensive skillset, though young Owen Power has the ability to play in all situations including with the man-advantage.

Meanwhile, Canada’s pre-tournament tune-up game in Switzerland before they travel to Beijing has been canceled due to COVID concerns for EV Zug, the scheduled opponent. For Staal and his team, the tournament will begin on February 10.
