Panthers’ Sam Bennett Suspended Three Games

January 2, 2022 at 7:09 pm CDT | by Zach Leach 1 Comment

Following a hearing earlier today with the NHL Department of Player Safety, a decision has been handed down to Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett. Player Safety has announced that Bennett has been suspended for three games for an illegal check to the head of Montreal Canadiens forward Cedric Paquette on Saturday. Bennett will miss more than a week of game action, sitting out against Calgary on Tuesday – a revenge game for the former Flame – Dallas on Thursday and Carolina on Saturday, returning to action against Vancouver on Tuesday, January 11. The league’s reasoning was as follows (video):

Bennett delivered a high, hard hit on [Paquette], making his head the main point of contact on a hit where such head contact was avoidable… Bennett delivers a forceful shoulder check to Paquette that makes his head the main point of contact, knocking him to the ice. This is an illegal check to the head… While we acknowledge that Bennett does make subsequent contact with Paquette’s left shoulder after going through the head, it is clearly Paquette’s head that absorbs the brunt of the force of this blow. Bennett’s shoulder makes direct and forceful contact through Paquette’s head and jaw, snapping his neck back… Bennett has the time and space to deliver a legal check that hits through Paquette’s near shoulder and core. His chosen angle of approach however forces him to cut across and in front of the body and make the head the main point of contact.

Player Safety also took into account that Bennett is considered a repeat offender. The physical forward has only been suspended once, but it was just last year during the postseason and for a similar incident. Bennett was suspended one playoff game for boarding Blake Coleman, another dangerous hit to the head of an opposing player. It also did not help Bennett’s case that Paquette was injured on the play, eventually leaving the game with a reported neck injury. As for the length of the suspension, it was likely taken into account that no penalty was called on the play meaning Bennett did not miss any time on Saturday as a result of the incident.

Bennett’s absence will be felt on a number of levels for the Atlantic-leading Panthers. Bennett is playing a major role in his first full season in Florida, averaging a career-high 18:30 in ice time and on pace for a career-best – by a wide margin – 31 goals and 48 points. The second-line center is also relied upon at the face-off dot and for his defensive play. Bennett has a regular penalty kill role, his 59 hits rank second among Panthers forwards, and his +12 rating is also among the best marks on the team. In every facet of the game, Bennett will be missed for the next three games, especially against two fellow division leaders in the Flames and Hurricanes.

Minor Transactions: 01/02/22

January 2, 2022 at 6:30 pm CDT | by Zach Leach Leave a Comment

The new year has brought with it a flurry of activity between NHL and AHL rosters. However, the top North American leagues are not alone in a noticeable uptick in transactions. Elsewhere, several other familiar names are making moves. With European leagues closing in on their postseasons prior to the stretch run in the NHL, expect these transactions to appear with greater frequency in the coming weeks, too.

  • Former AHL MVP Daniel Carr has finally found some consistency in his career. The skilled forward played for four different NHL teams over the past four seasons and was never able to hold down a roster spot despite his impressive minor league numbers, especially after leaving the Montreal Canadiens. He opted to leave North America last season, inking a two-year deal with HC Lugano of the Swiss National League. Carr only played in eight games for the team in 2020-21, but was a point-per-game player all the same. This year, he has 13 points in 12 games, continuing to make a major impact albeit in limited action. Lugano has decided to reward Carr’s strong play in hopes that he can be a core piece of the team moving forward and Carr has jumped at some long-term stability in his career. The team has announced a new three-year extension for Carr, which will keep him in Switzerland through the 2024-25 season and into mid-thirties. This likely marks the end of Carr’s NHL career, but he could be a superstar in the National League through the duration of his new deal.
  • When goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis left North America in 2018, it initially seemed like the right move. Gudlevskis had an excellent first season in the KHL, recording a 2.37 GAA for his hometown team, Dinamo Riga. However, the following season got off to a horrific start and Gudlevskis ended up leaving midseason to play in Germany and then split last year between Austria and Slovakia. Well, Gudlevskis finally found his stride once again in Slovakia between late last season and early this year and now he is elevating back to another top European league. Brynas IF of the SHL has announced a contract with Gudlevskis for the remainder of this season. The former Tampa Bay Lightning net minder will now have a chance to show what he can do at the top level in Sweden in hopes that it leads to another contract with a top club. At 29 and with connections still in North America, a return to the AHL and perhaps even the NHL at some point can’t be ruled out if he continues to perform. His newest gig with Brynas will tell a lot about his ability to play at an elite level.
  • Yevgeni Oksentyuk is moving on from his stint in the ECHL, at least for now. The Dallas Stars prospect has played almost exclusively at the “AA” level in his first pro season in North America, but the AHL’s Texas Stars have recalled him from Idaho Steelheads. Oksentyuk, a 2020 sixth-round pick out of Belarus, has nine goals and 16 points in 17 ECHL games this season and appears ready for the next level. The undersized forward will always have to work hard to excel against bigger, stronger competition in North America, but has found success so far in the ECHL and the OHL before that and could continue to develop for the Stars.

Injury Notes: Kucherov, Balcers, Capitals

January 2, 2022 at 3:01 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 2 Comments

After today’s shutout loss at the hands of the New York Rangers, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Tampa Bay Lightning. Head coach Jon Cooper said after the game that injured forward Nikita Kucherov “is getting close” to returning, and the team hopes to have him back by the middle of the month. He was originally expected to miss two months after sustaining a lower-body injury after just three games this year, but that’s now turned into three months. He was averaging nearly 21 minutes a game and had four points in those three games, not missing a beat despite playing so little hockey over the past two years.

More injury notes from around the NHL:

  • San Jose Sharks forward Rudolfs Balcers was listed as day-to-day with a lower-body injury back on December 5, but he’s still not back in the lineup. Sharks reporter Curtis Pashelka reports, however, that Balcers is still 1-2 weeks away from returning to the lineup. The Latvian forward had played well to start the year, tallying 10 points through 24 games. He’s developing into a solid middle-six piece for the Sharks, one that they’d like to get back into game shape as soon as they can.
  • The Washington Capitals are missing two big names in Nicklas Backstrom and T.J. Oshie from today’s game against New Jersey, as they were held out of the lineup with non-COVID illnesses. Backstrom and Oshie have combined for just 19 games this season, so missed games are nothing new for them. They’ve both been productive when in the lineup, though, and at this point, it seems as though this may be the light at the end of the tunnel for them.

Ryan Getzlaf Placed In COVID Protocol, Maxime Comtois Activated

January 2, 2022 at 1:54 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

The Anaheim Ducks placed captain Ryan Getzlaf in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol today, per a team tweet. They also activated forward Maxime Comtois from the list and swapped taxi squad bodies, recalling Greg Pateryn and sending Jacob Larsson down.

Getzlaf’s having somewhat of a resurgence for Anaheim this year, already getting more points than he had last year in 48 games. His 20 assists through 29 games are most on the team. He’s had great chemistry with Troy Terry, as evidenced by the latter’s 18 goals on the year.

With Getzlaf’s absence, Comtois likely returns to the lineup in a top-six role. That’s a good sign, showing that the team trusts him to improve on his singular assist through 14 games.

The team already had Trevor Zegras on COVID protocol, so it’s a lot of offensive firepower taken out of the lineup for Anaheim at the moment.

Montreal Canadiens Reaching Out To General Manager Candidates

January 2, 2022 at 12:54 pm CDT | by Josh Erickson 4 Comments

As reported by TSN’s Pierre LeBrun, the Montreal Canadiens are beginning the process of reaching out to candidates for their vacant general manager position. LeBrun reports that Montreal has reached out to Roberto Luongo, Mathieu Darche, and Daniel Briere, asking their teams’ permission to interview them for the role.

While LeBrun notes there are other candidates possible, those are three interesting names to focus on. Luongo is somewhat recently retired, hanging up the skates after the 2018-19 season, but he’s been in a management role ever since. For the past three seasons, he’s been a special assistant to the general manager with the Florida Panthers, a team that’s experienced a quick rise to success in that time. He also now has general manager experience internationally, serving as the general manager for Team Canada at the 2021 World Championships. Even with his recently retired status, that experience makes him an appealing candidate nonetheless.

Briere has general manager experience, too, however. After retiring from the NHL during the 2015 offseason, he immediately joined the Philadelphia Flyers, also in a special assistant role. He stayed there for two years before joining the ECHL’s Maine Mariners, where he’s been ever since. He’s been in a variety of roles there, serving as the vice president of hockey operations from 2017-18 to last season and the general manager in 2019-20 and 2020-21. His role was upgraded to team president for 2021-22.

Darche actually retired as a Canadien in 2012, but has the least experience out of all three candidates. His experience was in no small role, however. He’s been the director of hockey operations in Tampa Bay since 2019-20, getting a Stanley Cup ring in his first two seasons. The championship pedigree is hard to ignore, and the Lightning organization have developed some serious front office talent in recent years.

Regardless, it’s an exciting development for Canadiens fans eager to see a new face in the role.

Artemi Panarin Enters COVID Protocol

January 2, 2022 at 11:27 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

Shortly ahead of their matinee game Sunday against Tampa Bay, New York Rangers forward Artemi Panarin entered the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol along with assistant coach Mike Kelly, according to the team. In a corresponding move, the team recalled forward Morgan Barron from the taxi squad to have an extra forward on the active roster.

The 30-year-old Panarin has 10 goals and 26 assists through 31 games this year to lead the team in points. It will be just his second missed game of the season.

Panarin played the Rangers’ two post-holiday break games after leaving the team’s December 15 game against Arizona with an undisclosed injury.

If Panarin is out for the five-day quarantine period, then he’ll miss three games. He could return January 8 against Anaheim, missing games against Tampa Bay, Edmonton, and Vegas.

Blackhawks Activate Marc-Andre Fleury From COVID Protocol

January 2, 2022 at 11:06 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

A smiling face is back on the Chicago Blackhawks’ active roster, as the team activated goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury from the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol this morning, per a team tweet.

Fleury’s return is a byproduct of the new, shortened COVID-19 quarantine requirements. Fleury was placed in the protocol on December 27, so he’s now eligible to return only five days after entering.

Arvid Soderblom will get the start for Chicago in goal today, but Fleury will return to the lineup and will be the backup for their game against Calgary.

Fleury’s rebounded nicely from what was a horrid start to the season by his standards, working his way back up to a .913 save percentage through 20 games. The Blackhawks hope his return to the room can help steady a team that was thrashed during a 6-1 loss to Nashville yesterday.

Jake Guentzel, Bryan Rust Activated From Injured Reserve

January 2, 2022 at 10:48 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

In a day that’s seen a flurry of roster moves from the Pittsburgh Penguins, some good news is coming in the form of the returns of forwards Jake Guentzel and Bryan Rust. Per the NHL, they were activated today in advance of the Penguins’ game against San Jose.

In corresponding moves, however, the Penguins removed four players from the active roster. Brian Boyle is on a short personal leave of absence after the birth of his daughter, but forwards Jeff Carter and Kasperi Kapanen and goalie Tristan Jarry were also removed, as they entered COVID protocol last week.

Guentzel has been out of the lineup since December 8 with an upper-body injury, but he still remains the team’s leader in points. The 27-year-old has 15 goals and 12 assists through 24 games, a testament to how banged up the Penguins have been this year.

Rust is having a really tough season with injuries, being limited to only 12 games. He missed the entire month of December with his second lower-body injury of the season.

In their returns to the lineup, they’ll likely resume their top-line roles flanking Sidney Crosby.

Taxi Squad Shuffle: 01/02/22

January 2, 2022 at 10:22 am CDT | by Josh Erickson Leave a Comment

There are seven NHL games to be played this Sunday, post-Winter Classic and solidly into the New Year. Teams are slowly returning to business as usual as players return from COVID protocol and the number of additions to protocol and postponements begins to dwindle. There’s likely to be all sorts of roster moves today as teams take advantage of the newly-reintroduced taxi squads, and we’ll keep track of those right here.

Atlantic Division

  • Per the AHL’s Rochester Americans, the Buffalo Sabres reassigned forward Ryan MacInnis to them this morning. MacInnis was the sole player on Buffalo’s taxi squad. In his first year with the Sabres organization, he has five goals and ten assists in 24 games with Rochester.
  • The Ottawa Senators recalled defenseman Max Guenette from the AHL’s Belleville Senators and promptly reassigned him to the taxi squad, according to a team tweet. The Senators had no extra defensemen with the team after Jacob Bernard-Docker and others entered COVID protocol yesterday. Guenette has two goals and five assists in 16 games with Belleville in his first professional season.

Metropolitan Division

  • According to a team tweet, the Pittsburgh Penguins made four recalls from their taxi squad today. Forwards Anthony Angello, Kasper Bjorkqvist, Radim Zohorna, and goalie Louis Domingue are now on the team’s active roster for their game against the San Jose Sharks today.
  • Aliaksei Protas is heading back to the AHL’s Hershey Bears, per a team tweet from the Washington Capitals. Protas had six points in his first 22 NHL games this season, but as the Capitals start to look like themselves again, he’s headed back to Hershey where he has five points in eight games this season. The team also swapped Michael Sgarbossa and Lucas Johansen, sending Johansen to the taxi squad and recalling Sgarbossa to the active roster.

Central Division

  • The St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Jim Thomas reports that after backing up Jordan Binnington in last night’s Winter Classic, the Blues assigned goalie Charlie Lindgren to the taxi squad today. It paves the way for Ville Husso to return from injury, who’s been out since December 7 with a lower-body injury.
    • Lindgren is now back with the Springfield Thunderbirds of the AHL, along with forward Alexei Toropchenko and defenseman Calle Rosen.
  • The Chicago Blackhawks recalled forwards Josiah Slavin from the taxi squad today while sending Mackenzie Entwistle and Collin Delia there, per The Athletic’s Scott Powers. Slavin will get another shot in the Blackhawks lineup after nine games earlier this year.
  • Per a team tweet, the Dallas Stars are bringing up defenseman Thomas Harley and goalie Adam Scheel from the AHL’s Texas Stars to their taxi squad. Harley, the 18th overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft, played his first seven NHL games with the Stars earlier this season but doesn’t have a point yet. Scheel has just a .886 save percentage with Texas this season, but due to salary restrictions, the team can’t recall Anton Khudobin to the taxi squad.
  • The Nashville Predators re-assigned forward Michael McCarron to the taxi squad from the active roster, per a team tweet. McCarron has just a goal in ten games.

Sam Bennett Will Have Hearing With Department Of Player Safety

January 2, 2022 at 9:22 am CDT | by Josh Erickson 2 Comments

The NHL Department of Player Safety tweeted Sunday morning that Florida Panthers forward Sam Bennett will have a hearing today for an illegal check to the head on forward Cedric Paquette of the Montreal Canadiens.

During Saturday’s game between the two teams, Bennett laid a hit on Paquette in the low slot in the Panthers’ offensive zone. When looking at the video replay, it seems as though Bennett’s shoulder made contact with Paquette’s head during the hit.

In advance of the hearing, it’s important to note two things that aren’t working in Bennett’s favor. For one, he has a history — he was suspended one game during the 2021 Stanley Cup Playoffs for boarding Tampa Bay’s Blake Coleman. Secondly, Paquette did suffer an injury on the play, leaving yesterday’s game with a neck injury.

The 25-year-old Bennett is on his way to a career year in his first full season with Florida. He’s averaging 18:30 per game, by far the highest mark of his career, and he has 11 goals and six assists through 26 games.
