Maple Leafs’ Eddie Shack Dies At Age 83

July 26, 2020 at 11:09 am CDT | by Holger Stolzenberg 5 Comments

He played 16 seasons with six different NHL teams, but Eddie Shack was considered to be a Toronto Maple Leaf. The team announced that the forward, who helped lead the Toronto franchise to four Stanley Cup Championships in the 1960s, passed away Saturday after a long fight with throat cancer. He was 83 years old.

Shack was a popular player in his time in the NHL, who held several nicknames throughout his career, including “The Entertainer,” “The Nose,” and even had a novelty song written about him called “Clear the Track, Here Comes Shack.” However, his on the ice play, especially in his years with the Maple Leafs was what stood out. Shack played nine seasons with Toronto, including a seven-year run from 1960 to 1967 where he played on four Stanley Cup title teams in 1962, 1963, 1964 and 1967. He also scored the game-winning goal in 1963 to capture the cup and was well known for his celebrations on the ice after scoring a goal.

He did get traded five different times throughout his career and spent time with a number of other teams, including the New York Rangers, Los Angeles Kings, Buffalo Sabres and Pittsburgh Penguins, before finally wrapping up his career with two more years in Toronto before retiring after the 1974-75 season. He was even almost traded to the Detroit Red Wings in a package in 1960 for Red Kelly, but the trade was cancelled after Kelly opted to retire rather than be traded. Shack played in 1,047 games, scoring 239 goals and accumulating 1,439 penalty minutes over the course of his career. He was just a handful of players to score 20 or more goals for five different teams.

Everyone at PHR wishes the best for the family and friends of Shack at this time.

Snapshots: Veleno, Kase, Dahlen, Blues

July 25, 2020 at 5:10 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Earlier this week, it was reported that Red Wings winger Filip Zadina was in talks to start next season with HC Ocelari Trinec of the Czech Extraliga.  It turns out he might not be the only Detroit youngster doing so as MLive’s Ansar Khan reports that center Joe Veleno is also a part of the discussions with Trinec.  The 20-year-old played his first professional season exclusively in the AHL but it’s worth noting that he was one of the youngest players in the league as he still had junior eligibility.  While Veleno got off to a slow start, he was able to rebound to put up a respectable 23 points (11-12-23) in 54 games before the pandemic hit while collecting six points (1-5-6) in as many games at the World Juniors.  A first-round pick (30th overall) in 2018, loaning Veleno over would allow him to get a couple of extra months of development before returning to North America when the 2020-21 season gets underway.

Elsewhere around the league:

  • Bruins winger Ondrej Kase was expected to add some depth to their attack when they acquired him from Anaheim. However, the pandemic limited him to just six games with his new team.  Now, he hasn’t been able to participate in practice due to being ‘unfit to participate’ and head coach Bruce Cassidy told reporters, including NBC Sports Boston’s Joe Haggerty, that he’s unsure if Kase will even be able to travel to the East’s hub in Toronto.  A decision on that front is expected on Sunday.  If he can’t participate, one of Anders Bjork or Karson Kuhlman could slot into a regular spot in the lineup.
  • When Jonathan Dahlen decided to stay in Sweden for another year, it wasn’t viewed as a big surprise considering the year he had. However, as Sheng Peng of San Jose Hockey Now notes, the Sharks were planning on bringing the 22-year-old over to contend for a spot with them for 2020-21.  Dahlen had 77 points in 51 games for Timra of the Swedish Allsvenskan, a second-tier league and while he had interest throughout the SHL which may have been better from a development perspective, he opted to re-sign at the lower level to try to help them earn a promotion to the SHL.  Their season ends early enough that it’s possible that Dahlen could wind up joining San Jose as a midseason addition.
  • There were no surprise cuts from the Blues’ roster. Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports (Twitter link) that defenseman Tyler Tucker and goalie Joel Hofer are the two that won’t be participating.  Tucker split the season between Barrie and Flint of the OHL but wasn’t eligible since his entry-level deal doesn’t start until 2020-21.  Hofer technically was eligible but he also is coming off a season strictly spent in junior with WHL Portland.  Louis is opting to carry three goalies on their roster which took Hofer out of the mix quickly.

Flames Make Final Roster Cuts

July 25, 2020 at 4:00 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The Flames have set their roster for the upcoming Qualifying Round.  GM Brad Treliving told reporters, including Sportsnet 960’s Pat Steinberg (Twitter link) that defenseman Connor Mackey and forwards Glenn Gawdin, Matthew Phillips, and Adam Ruzicka won’t be with the team for their series against Winnipeg.

Mackey was the obvious choice of the group since he wasn’t eligible to play as his contract doesn’t start until next season.  However, bringing him to the camp gave Calgary’s staff a look at their prized college free agent acquisition.

As for the forwards, Gawdin had a nice sophomore season with AHL Stockton, coming in just shy of a point per game with 47 in 53 games.  He’s only a couple of years removed from finishing second in the WHL in scoring but he hasn’t made his NHL debut yet.  Phillips also saw his point per game total jump in his second AHL season, collecting 33 points in 38 games in a season that was shortened due to injury while he missed time during camp (as did Gawdin).  As for Ruzicka, he had 27 points in 54 games with Stockton in his first pro campaign.  While the three have some upside down the road, Calgary has cleared opted to go with some more experienced options to round out their playoff roster.

Stars Make Final Roster Cuts

July 25, 2020 at 2:59 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

Although the official rosters aren’t expected to be released until tomorrow, Stars GM Jim Nill told reporters, including Matthew DeFranks of the Dallas Morning News (Twitter link) which four players will not be on their roster.  Those that won’t be making the trip to Edmonton are goalie Colton Point, defenseman Dillon Heatherington, plus forwards Joel L’Esperance and Rhett Gardner.

Point spent most of his sophomore professional season with Idaho of the ECHL where he posted a 2.86 GAA with a .898 SV% in 20 games.  However, even with him being cut, Dallas will be taking four goaltenders with them into the bubble.  As for Heatherington, this was the first time in three seasons that he didn’t see any NHL action.  Instead, he played exclusively with AHL Texas where he had 14 points in 59 games.

L’Esperance has been one of the top scorers in Texas in each of the last two seasons so his exclusion is a little more surprising.  He finished second on the team in scoring this year with 25 goals and 15 assists in 58 games while chipping in with a goal in three contests with the big club.  Gardner just wrapped up his first professional year and while he only had 24 points in 55 games with Texas, he did manage to get into eight games with Dallas.

The cuts mean that a pair of their top junior prospects, defenseman Thomas Harley and center Ty Dellandrea, will go into the bubble.  They are the most recent first-round picks of the Stars and while they may not play, they will benefit from being around the team, especially with the start of the 2020-21 season at the lower levels still in question.

Poll: Who Should Win The 2020 Jack Adams Award?

July 25, 2020 at 2:27 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 4 Comments

The finalists have been announced for all the major awards, but like every year there is much debate over who should take home each piece of hardware. In fact, with a shortened season and unorthodox playoff scenario, the views and reasoning behind each vote will perhaps vary even more wildly.

So as we get closer to the return of NHL hockey in Edmonton and Toronto, where 24 teams will try to chase the Stanley Cup, we’re going to ask you, the PHR faithful, to explain who you would vote for if given the chance.

After looking at the Calder Trophy finalists, let’s shift our focus to the Jack Adams Award, given to “the NHL coach adjudged to have contributed the most to his team’s success.”  In recent years, teams with top records have been overlooked with ones overachieving relative to early-season expectations often getting the nod.

This year’s group of finalists features someone from both groups with Bruce Cassidy (Bruins), John Tortorella (Blue Jackets), and Alain Vigneault (Flyers) comprising the top three.

Cassidy helped lead Boston to the top record in this shortened season where the Bruins still managed to reach 100 points in just 70 games with a 44-14-12 record.  While they were expected to be a contender heading into the year featuring a strong attack and one of the stingiest goaltending tandems in the league, they were the class of the field for most of the season which certainly makes Cassidy deserving of the nomination.  He has never won this award in the past despite putting up a very quiet 161-66-34 record since going behind their bench.

After being gutted in free agency with the departures of Artemi Panarin, Matt Duchene, and Sergei Bobrovsky (among others), expectations were low for Columbus heading into the season.  Instead, it was believed that they’d be in for a transition year, especially since they opted to go with the relatively unproven tandem of Joonas Korpisalo and Elvis Merzlikins between the pipes.  Instead, while they struggled as expected offensively, they became one of the stingiest defensive teams in the league and were in the mix for a playoff spot when the pandemic hit despite a litany of injuries to core players.  Tortorella is a two-time winner of the award after winning in 2004 with Tampa Bay and 2017 with Columbus.

As for Vigneault, he helped lead Philadelphia to their best points percentage in nearly a decade at .645 with a top-ten offense and defense.  In doing so, the Flyers went from a team that missed the playoffs to one that still has a chance at the top seed in the Eastern Conference as a 9-1 record in their final ten games allowed them to leapfrog Pittsburgh for the second spot in the Metropolitan Division; in doing so, they qualified for the round robin seeding games instead of the play-in round.  If he wins, it would Vigneault’s second Jack Adams Award as he also won in 2007 with Vancouver.

There’s a strong case to be made for each coach but which one should take home the prize?  Cast your vote below.

Corey Crawford Confirms Positive COVID-19 Test

July 25, 2020 at 12:31 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose 2 Comments

Corey Crawford’s absence from the first twelve days of Chicago’s training camp came as a surprise and the team was only able to provide the ’unfit to play’ designation.  Crawford himself revealed the reason, telling reporters, including Scott Powers of The Athletic (Twitter link) that he tested positive for COVID-19.  As a result, he had to spend the last couple of weeks in self-quarantine.

The good news for the Blackhawks is that he was cleared to practice today for the first time.  Despite the short-term uncertainty surrounding when he’d be cleared to play, he was among the 31 players on Chicago’s eligible player list that was submitted on Friday, reports Sportsnet’s Mark Spector (Twitter link).  He’ll now have the next week to get prepared for their Qualifying Round series against Edmonton which begins next weekend.

The veteran will be leaned on heavily against the Oilers.  With Chicago trading Robin Lehner at the deadline, Malcolm Subban is now their backup so Crawford should get the chance to run with the starting job.  A pending unrestricted free agent, the 35-year-old will be hoping that his play through their return (however long the Blackhawks last) will help propel him to land another starting role, be it in Chicago or elsewhere in October.

Hurricanes Notes: Hamilton, Drury, Necas, Pesce

July 25, 2020 at 11:12 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 1 Comment

Hurricanes defenseman Dougie Hamilton was expected to be a key addition to Carolina’s lineup for the postseason.  However, he has missed the last several practices and it seems that he’ll be out for a little while longer.  Sara Civian of The Athletic reports (Twitter link) that the injury is not a recurrence of his broken leg that shelved his season prematurely and that the estimated recovery period is weeks instead of months.  That would shelve him for their upcoming series against the Rangers at a minimum plus likely the first round if they make it that far.  His absence should allow Sami Vatanen, a trade deadline acquisition that has yet to make his debut with the team, to potentially debut on their top pairing.

More from Carolina:

  • Prospect Jack Drury is expected to leave Harvard and play in Vaxjo of the SHL next season, reports Johan Svensson of SportExpressen. The 20-year-old had a stellar season with Harvard and still has two years of college eligibility left.  However, with the pandemic expected to cancel sports there until January at the earliest, their season is in some jeopardy so if Drury wants a guaranteed chance at playing, turning pro is the only way to go.  While he could sign with Carolina, the start of the 2020-21 AHL season is going to be delayed as well so going to Sweden will ensure that he’ll be suiting up in September.  Svensson adds that several SHL teams were vying for Drury’s services.
  • Center Martin Necas did not participate in practice today, notes Chip Alexander of the Raleigh News & Observer. As is the new standard, there is no further information available than that.  The 21-year-old had been skating with the team earlier in the week.
  • While defenseman Brett Pesce will not be available for their series against New York, he was included on Carolina’s playoff-eligible roster, Alexander relays (Twitter link).  Pesce suffered a shoulder injury just before the trade deadline which helped prompt the Hurricanes to acquire both Vatanen and Brady Skjei at the trade deadline.

Ilya Samsonov Out For The Postseason

July 25, 2020 at 9:59 am CDT | by Brian La Rose 4 Comments

One of the more notable absences during training camp has been Washington goaltender Ilya Samsonov.  It turns out that his injury that was suffered before camp will be enough to hold him out for the entire postseason as the team announced to reporters, including Samantha Pell of the Washington Post (Twitter link) that he will remain in Washington to undergo treatment and was not on the playoff-eligible roster that was submitted on Friday.

That means that veteran Braden Holtby will be the starter this postseason.  The veteran is coming off the worst statistical season of his career as he posted a 3.11 GAA with a .897 SV% in 48 appearances for the Caps.  Those numbers are below the league average for a backup let alone a starter.  That had presented the possibility that Samsonov, their goalie of the future, would get a chance to play in the playoffs but that’s clearly not an option now.

This will give Holtby one last chance to boost his value before hitting the open market in October as an unrestricted free agent.  Given the cap crunch and Samsonov’s presence, it seems quite unlikely that the Capitals will be able to retain him this summer.

Meanwhile, the Capitals will likely use these next two weeks to determine who will serve as Holtby’s backup.  Pheonix Copley, last year’s backup, is the presumptive favorite while Vitek Vanecek, who had the better numbers this season with AHL Hershey, is also in the mix.

Washington has also made their final cuts to get down to the 31-player roster.  Tarik El-Bashir of The Athletic reports (Twitter link) that forwards Shane Gersich and Garrett Pilon are the ones that will not participate in the postseason.  Both players played exclusively in the AHL this season.

Vegas Makes Two Cuts To Finalize Roster

July 24, 2020 at 7:10 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

While the NHL is planning to announce all of the rosters for their return over the weekend, the Golden Knights jumped the gun, revealing their 31-player group for the postseason.  Their roster will feature 18 forwards, 10 defensemen, and three goaltenders.

Their initial camp roster had 33 skaters and the two that didn’t make the cut are defensemen Jake Bischoff and Jimmy Schuldt.

Bischoff made his NHL debut this season, getting into four games with the Golden Knights in his third professional year.  However, he spent the majority of the season with AHL Chicago where he had three goals and six assists in 52 games.

As for Schuldt, he was a highly sought after college player in 2019 and made his NHL debut right after signing out of St. Cloud State.  However, he didn’t see any NHL action this season, instead playing in 52 games with the Wolves where he had 21 points.

Vegas will be taking part in a three-game round robin series in early August against Dallas, St. Louis, and Colorado.  The results of those matchups will determine the seeding order for the postseason.

Restart Notes: Rosters, Player Tracking, Edmonton Arena, Bubble

July 24, 2020 at 5:00 pm CDT | by Brian La Rose Leave a Comment

The NHL held a call with reporters today to go over some of the final elements of the NHL’s return which officially gets underway next weekend in Toronto and Edmonton.  Here are some of the important parts from that call (all links to Twitter).

  • Final rosters had to be submitted today by 4 PM CT, relays Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun. A maximum of 31 players are allowed while teams can only bring 52 people into the bubble.  While teams are still a couple of days away from travelling there, the league needs the time to properly vet each roster.  Teams will have an opportunity to evaluate a couple of extra players in next week’s exhibition game, however.  Sportsnet’s Chris Johnston reports that teams will be able to dress an extra forward and defenseman for that contest, noting that a couple of GMs made that request when the exhibition schedule was cut to just the single game.
  • Player and puck tracking have seemingly been on the horizon for a couple of years now but it has been delayed. While it seemed like this would provide the perfect opportunity to test it out, it will not be in place through the first two playoff rounds, mentions Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press.  However, Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly didn’t rule out the possibility of it happening once the Conference Finals begin and play is limited to just one facility in Edmonton.
  • Speaking of Edmonton’s facility, it sustained some damage from a recent storm. However, as NHL.com’s Dan Rosen notes, NHL content and events chief Steve Mayer indicated the damage has been repaired and the equipment replaced so there are no lingering issues or concerns about hosting part of the NHL’s return.
  • One of the lingering questions has been what the punishment would be if a player leaves the bubble without approval. As Postmedia’s Derek Van Diest points out, those players will be sent home and won’t be allowed back in.  This isn’t expected to affect those who will be leaving for family matters, such as Washington’s Lars Eller.
